BUYER’S GUIDE
When it comes to selection of a MIG
welding machine, the choices are endless.
It comes down to how much you want to
spend, frequency of use and the thickness
of the material being welded.
As with everything else, you will get what you pay for when it comes
to welding equipment. Investing in a quality welding machine, from
one of the major manufacturers, ensures a dependable welder will be in
your shed for decades.
Purchasing a MIG welding machine should be viewed as a longterm investment. The right choice will last for many years, while the
wrong choice will require replacement after a short period of time.
Reliability and performance should always be a major consideration
when purchasing welding equipment. The last thing you need is for the
machine to break down in the middle of a job that needs to get done, or
deliver a weld that isn’t acceptable.
Drive System and
Transformer Quality
Drive system and transformer quality is essential to keep the machine
running smoothly. A drive system designed for durability will feature
brass or high quality glass reinforced plastic inlet guides, and fully
enclosed motor. The transformer should be varnish dipped and baked to
prevent the entrance of moisture and dust. This is important to keep the
transformer from shorting.
Welding Current Range
Welding range is another consideration. Selecting a MIG machine with
a wide welding range, capable of delivering low to high amperage, will
provide the versatility of handling a range of applications and range of
material thickness. Ensure the machine you are purchasing performs at
its true rating. If a machine promises 255 Amps, then it should have the
required voltage to be capable of delivering exactly that – not less.

Will it Stand up to
Australian Conditions?
So what should you look for when buying a MIG welder? Before
handing over your hard earned cash, check that the brand of welding
machine you are considering has a good history in the Australian
market. Unless designed for the diverse range of Australian conditions;
either high operating temperature, high humidity or dry and dusty, the
welding machine may not be able to withstand these tough conditions,
therefore limiting the durability and lifespan of the machine.
Welding Gun
The quality of the welding gun is an important consideration when selecting
a MIG package. A high quality gun will deliver a consistent welding output,
meaning the job will get done right the first time and without any hassle.

The ‘smooth’ arc characteristic makes it easy to weld thin materials
without burn-through. Use with silicon bronze wire for low distortion joints

THE BATTLE OF SELECTION
Selection of the right Auto-Darkening welding helmet
has become rather confusing. With so many models
available on the market to choose from, the range of
price brackets and the different terminology used by
various manufacturers, it is difficult to know which
one to go with.
