Once again, I would like to thank you for your custom and your continued support. If you have not yet experienced the service that we offer, I look forward to welcoming you as a new customer in the near future…”

Data transmission between items of CCTV control equipment is often carried over twisted-pair cable. This includes data from control keyboards to a central processor or video switching matrix as well as the data from a controller to a telemetry receiver at a functional camera. RS485 is a common data transmission standard employed.

RS485 uses signals of about 5 volts in amplitude and are differential which means that only the difference in voltage between the two cables of the twisted-pair is taken into account. If both of the two wires are interfered with by the same amount then this is automatically ignored. This makes RS485 very good at getting data a long way with very few errors in noisy environments

The maximum cable distance along which signals will pass reliably is 1200m. This is dependent upon using the correct grade of cable. Belden 9841 is one such cable, of which there are many.

Technical Tips

Home Office recommendations, incorporated into European Standards for CCTV Systems specify that in order to be able to recognise a person he or she should occupy at least 50% of monitor height. Also if it is necessary to be able to positively identify an unknown person then his or her image should occupy 120% or more of the screen's height.

When designing a system it is assumed that the person to be recognised or identified is the European Standard height of 1.6m tall and is standing upright!

Hence for recognition, if a 1.6m person must occupy 50% of screen height, then the monitor must cover no more than 2 x 1.6m = 3.2m

at the distance from the camera where the person is standing.

With the VLP4026, VLP4526 and the VLP5026 the standard of recognition can be achieved at the following distances:

Technical Tips

When installing IR cameras, attention should be taken in the positioning of the camera in order to maximise the effectiveness and coverage of the IR. Low powered IR LEDs can be affected by environmental conditions resulting in poor performance. Where possible, the following should be avoided: n Large areas of tarmac.

n Areas which are mainly laid to grass.

n Areas with many concrete surfaces.

IR is absorbed by the above types of surface, which can significantly reduce the IR coverage. If the scene does contain areas mentioned above, it is advisable to use a high powered IR unit in order to increase the IR performance and compensate against the environmental conditions.

In normal conditions, IR rays bounce off a surface and are reflected back into the camera. If there is nothing for the IR to bounce off, the camera will not see the light and it may appear as if the IR is not working. In this situation, when a person or vehicle appears in the scene the object should then become visible.

Note that the power consumption of IR cameras can increase under cold conditions. This is due to LEDs burning brighter in cold weather and should be taken into consideration when calculating power supply requirements.

DATA PROTECTION

The use of CCTV systems by private or public bodies may be subject to the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA). The DPA covers information that relates to an individual. Until recently, the DPA was thought to cover most CCTV use as it related to individuals who were captured on camera. However, a recent Court of Appeal case has shown that the scope of the DPA is far narrower than was previously thought. It is now clear that only certain CCTV activities are covered. The court decided that for information to relate to an individual, it had to affect their privacy. To help judge this, the court decided that two matters were important: (1) a person had to be the focus of the information and (2) the information must tell you something significant about them. Whether or not the DPA covers a CCTV system thus depends on how it is used. If a particular person is intended to be the focus of CCTV and the information from the CCTV tells something significant about that person, the data from the CCTV are likely to be covered by the DPA and the operator's use of CCTV must comply with the provisions of the DPA.

Basic CCTV systems, such as those in a shop for security purposes, are now unlikely to be covered provided that the operator is not using the images for checking on staff.

If, however, the CCTV is used remotely to zoom in on people, or for monitoring particular individuals, or the data recorded is used for anything other than for providing information to the law enforcement bodies, then the CCTV is likely to be covered by the DPA.

Technical Tips

COVERT CAMERAS

Covert cameras tend to be built into an array of common products such as PIRs, junction boxes and smoke detectors.

Small board cameras are also available that can be fitted into suitable items already on site.

They have very small front 'objective' lenses, which mean that they can be put behind very small holes, and are virtually undetectable. Straight and right-angled models are available to facilitate the mounting of the camera and to reduce the depth required behind the concealing surface. Due to the small objective lens, pin-hole lenses cannot gather as much light as conventional lenses and so their use dictates that the scene illumination is better than would otherwise be required.

Typically the maximum apertures available on pin hole lenses is

F2.5 to F3.5 which is approximately 2 to 3 stops less than standard lenses. Hence between 4 and 8 times the normally quoted minimum scene illumination is required for the camera to produce a usable picture.

FIXED DOME UTP VERSIONS

Selecting a Concept Pro product with built in UTP effectively allows you to dramatically reduce cable costs and engineers time by using just a single CAT5 cable to make all the connections.

For example, when installing a VCP551UTP, 24V AC, RS-485 and video can all be carried over a single CAT5 cable at distances up to 300 metres. Such distances are achievable because the twists in UTP cable cancel any external interference that would otherwise affect traditional coax cabling, and produce poor image quality.

n Power and video can both be carried on a single CAT5 cable run n Reduced cabling cost n Less susceptible to interference n 12V DC / 24V AC n 200mA/2.4W

VANDAL RESISTANT DOME UTP VERSIONS

Selecting a Concept Pro product with built in UTP effectively allows you to dramatically reduce cable costs and engineers time by using just a single CAT5 cable to make all the connections.

For example, when installing a VVP9314UTP, 24V AC, RS-485 and video can all be carried over a single CAT5 cable at distances up to

300 metres. Such distances are achievable because the twists in UTP cable cancel any external interference that would otherwise affect traditional coax cabling, and produce poor image quality.

TECHNICAL TIPS

WHAT IS A GROUND LOOP?

A ground loop occurs when there is a potential difference between inter-connecting equipment such as the camera and

DVR and is due to an imbalance in the power loading of the two systems. The potential difference causes a loop current to flow between the two inter-connecting items, and as a result any interfering source such as 50 Hz mains power is picked up by the ground current flowing through the braiding of the coaxial cable instead of it acting as a shield to protect the interfering source from entering the coaxial cable. See Figure below.

The 50 Hz mains power or hum is then passed on along with the wanted video signal from the camera and displayed on the monitor as a rolling hum bar

The Video Ground Loop Isolator should be installed at the CCTV Camera end by connecting the BNC Male connector of the

Isolator to the camera and the BNC Male connector of the coaxial cable to the BNC Female connector on the Isolator. In a multi-camera installation it is recommended that a Video Ground Loop Isolator be installed for each camera.

Introduction to IP

Conventional Analogue CCTV System

Brief system outline n All cameras are run centrally to one DVR or matrix n System relies heavily on the use of Coax cable which is bulky, costly to install and expensive to relocate n Analogue systems are susceptible to electical noise and other external influences

Why do we continue to use this system?

n IP cameras were traditionally slow and had bad image quality n IP devices were seen as difficult to install n There was no complete IP solution that could replace an analogue system completely

Wireless Transmission of Video Signals

There are a number of choices to transmit video signals through free space thus avoiding the need to run cables from camera to monitor. The most popular options are outlined below:-

Short Path Radio Links.

Uses 1.394 and 2.4 GHz License Exempt Radio Bands.

2.4GHz band has 4 channels available, 1.394GHz has single band.

Typical Range 50-100m in free space, much reduced through obstacles.

Range can be extended with suitable antennas but at increased cost.

Note that because the antennas are omni-directional then it is relatively simple to eavesdrop other peoples video pictures. Also it is fairly straight forward to jam the signals.

Interference may be a problem, either from other equipment that also uses the 2.4GHz band such as some cordless telephones and wireless networking equipment.

However this equipment is ideal for rapid deployment systems and for temporary covert surveillance.

Short-medium Range Microwave Links

Clear Line-of-Sight required between transmitter and receiver.

Reasonable immunity to fog and snow.

Range up to 750m with standard antenna.

Can be extended to up to 3Km with high-gain antennae.

Video-Only links for static cameras.

Video + Reverse Data links available for telemetry control of functional cameras.

Nominal license fee payable

Note that clear line of sight is required between the transmitting and receiving antenna. It is advisable to mount the antennae as high as possible to minimise signal attenuation from obstacles on the ground. Pay attention to trees that may grow to become obstacles in the future.

Before committing to the use of a wireless video link, it is strongly recommended that an on-site test is carried out with the proposed transmission equipment to ensure satisfactory results.

VISBOX 2.4 (IP65)

Visualiser RX / TX Kit

Visualiser is ideal for applications where the laying of cable between the camera and the viewing point could cause a problem, short-term camera installations, discreet or covert surveillance and home security. Using the 1.394 GHz UK licence exempt frequency of 2.4 GHz, the Visualiser Link offers an efficient, low cost solution to users.

Visualiser is a totally wireless system allowing any composite video input to be transmitted to a receiver, which can then be connected to any standard monitor, VCR, multiplexer or quad processor.

Visualiser is available with a number of options including a weatherproof transmitter for connection to any suitable video source and series of covert and overt packages. These are available as low voltage or battery powered versions with options for audio and alarm trigger.

A balun converts an unbalanced video signal into a balanced signal which can then be fed over standard CAT 5 cable. CAT 5 is much more cost effective to work with than RG59 and also provides greater flexibility as up to 4 video signals can be fed on a single CAT 5 cable run. Baluns can be either passive (no power required) or active (they need a separate PSU but generally offer extended transmission distance). In general, if a balun is used on a camera, a corresponding balun is also required at the monitor side to convert the balanced signal back to unbalanced to allow connection to a standard BNC input (DVR, monitor etc.).

Videcon

VA311

Passive Balun

Videcon

VA313

Passive Balun

The VA311 is an incredibly compact single channel passive video balun which can easily be fitted inside speed dome junction boxes, camera housings and to the rear panel of DVRs without obstructing other cable connections.

To reduce cable cost and installation time, one length of CAT-5 cable can be used for up to 4 pairs of VA311, allowing 4 camera signals to be transmitted at distances of up to 300m in colour and

600m in black & white.

Converts 4 BNC inputs to one CAT 5 RJ45 connection. Maximum distance is 300m for colour cameras and 600m for B/W cameras. A second VA313 at the monitor end converts the single

CAT5 back in to 4 BNC outputs for connection to a DVR or monitor etc.

Videcon

VA314

Passive Balun

Provides power to and receives video from up to 4 cameras (one CAT 5 cable per camera). Each camera requires a VA316. The output of the VA314 is a single

RJ45 connector which can be fed over another CAT 5 run to a VA313 to ultimately provide 4 standard BNC video outputs. The VA314 includes a PSU which provides 12V DC and a maximum of 250mA for each camera. Maximum distance from cameras to monitor is 250M.

Videcon

VA316

Passive Balun

Located at the camera and accepts power from and feeds video back to a VA318 or VA314 over a single CAT5 cable.

VA320

Active Balun

Located at the monitor end, the VA318 provides 12V DC power over a single CAT 5 cable to a camera at distances of up to 300m. The video output from the camera is fed down the same CAT5 cable back to the monitor. Requires a single VA316 at the camera end. The VA318 includes a

PSU which provides 12V DC and a maximum of 250ma for the camera.

An active balun located at the monitor end which is used in conjunction with a VA311 at the camera end to provide

CAT 5 video transmission over distances of between

300m and 1200m. The VA320 requires a separate 12V DC

PSU.

4 channel passive balun

The VA319 is a 1U 19" rack mount 16 way passive balun solution and provides a neat, power free solution for running up to 16 camera feeds over CAT5 cables to a rack mounted DVR.

The VA319 is fully compatible with other baluns in the range and connections can be made either using RJ45 connectors or screw terminals for maximum flexibility. Maximum transmission distance is 400m for colour signals and 600m for black & white signals.
