T hank you for

your interest in writing to me about using wood pellets and corn to heat your home. I became aware of wood pellet heaters about ten years ago

Jim Dulley and I have used one (actually different models) ever since. The picture below shows one of the models which I have tested in my own home. It is shown with a 40 lb.bag of pellets and a 50-lb. bag of shelled corn in front of it.

Burning pellets is one of the most convenient and a very clean method to heat with wood, a renewable energy resource. Wood pellets are available at many home centers and farm/feed supply stores in 40-pound plastic bags. I pay about $5.40 per bag for the

Update Bulletin No. 880 pellets in Cincinnati and corn costs about

$5 per 50-lb. bag.

I have listed the highest-quality pellet heaters on the following pages and any of these would be a good choice. The two basic design options are a topfeed and bottom-feed auger system. The topfeed mechanism is a simpler design where the pellets just drop into the firepot from above and burn. It is a safe system, but it requires more frequent cleaning unless it utilizes some type of automatic firepot cleaning system. Bottom-feed designs can typically use a greater range of higherash content pellets and other fuels such as olive or cherry pits, etc.

Burning corn is one of the least expensive heat sources. Unless a pellet stove is designed for corn, burning it create a hard clinker in the firepot. Corn also has more ash content than wood pellets. Stoves designed to burn corn have some addition components or special combustion process to keep the firepot clean.

Some typical retail prices:

Breckwell — $1,500 to $2,500

Paromax — DC2000 - $3,000, Europa -

$3,200 (prices are with all the options)

England’s Stove Works — $1,500 and up

Lennox (Whitfield) — freestanding -

$1,500 to $2,500 (custom paint, self-igniter)

Sherwood Ind. (Enviro-Fire) — $1,900 to $2,500

Snow Flame — freestanding - $1,800 • fireplace insert - $2,400 • gold options - $75 to

$150 • brass options - $50 to $65

Thelin — $2,500 to $3,000

Types of Pellet Appliances

1) Top Feed — The auger moves pellets up an inclined tube or chute where they drop into the burn pot above the fire. These stoves may have some advantage in

1 overall heating efficiency since pellets remain in the burn pot until they are completely burned, and exhaust gases tend to move slower, allowing improved heat transfer.

2

2) Bottom Feed — The auger pushes the pellets directly into the burn pot. These tend to perform better with the wider range of ash content in standard grade fuel because the feeding action moves ash and clinkers away from the burn area.

This action helps keep air inlets open and thereby reduces the frequency of cleaning the burn pot.

3) Combustion Air/Exhaust System — The amount of air needed for optimum combustion efficiency is delivered automatically or with minor manual adjustments.

In most designs, a fan delivers air to the fire and blows exhaust by-products out of a vent pipe that is smaller and typically less expensive than a chimney.

3

Freestanding pellet stoves offer greater flexibility in installation choices. Supported by a pedestal or legs, they are designed to be installed in most living areas of the home (restrictions may apply to sleeping areas). Freestanding stoves are placed on a non-combustible floor protector. They are installed a specified distance from combustible surfaces that is usually smaller than that required for comparable cordwood appliances.

Fireplace inserts are installed in existing, working fireplaces. A decorative panel covers the space between the insert and the fireplace opening. Some pellet inserts are approved only for use in masonry fireplaces, while others can also be installed in approved factory-built metal fireplaces.

Surefire 502 H Battery Back-up from Harman Stove Company

The Surefire 502 H is designed to backup or replace utility power.

When it is used with a common 90

A-hr marine battery, its highly efficient circuitry provides approximately

8 hours of operation from a pellet stove in the absence of electricity.

Here is how it works — The

Surefire 502 H interfaces between the pellet stove and the AC electrical supply.

When electricity is present the

Surefire 502 H automatically charges the battery and continuously surveys the power line. At the instant that a power failure occurs, the Surefire

502 H instantly and automatically converts the energy

Model 25-PI Pellet Insert Stove from England’s Stove Works, Inc.

stored in the battery to AC power. This assures safe uninterrupted operation of the stove during the absence of normal AC electricity.

When normal AC power is restored, the Surefire 502 H reinstates

AC utility power as the prime energy source to operate the pellet stove. Simultaneously and automatically the

Surefire 502 H commences the recharging of the battery, to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure.

Automatic circuitry prevents overcharging of the battery.
