Thank you for purchasing the ClearSounds A1600
amplified cordless freedom deluxe telephone. If
you also purchased one or more additional A1600E
expandable handsets as a part of the system, this
guide also applies to the expandable handsets.
This guide is meant to get you started. For complete
information about using all of the features, please
refer to the ClearSounds A1600 DECT 6.0 Operating
Manual that also came in your box. If you purchased
expandable handsets to compliment your A1600
system, you will find complete information in the
A1600 E DECT 6.0 Expandable Handset Operating
Manual.

Register handsets
Install handset batteries
The telephone handset that you purchased with
your ClearSounds A1600 telephone system is
registered to the base that came with the system
(Base-1).
Use only rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries.
Other types of batteries can damage the phone and
cause personal injury.
If you have additional ClearSounds A1600E
handsets, you must register each additional handset
to the base. The system can accommodate a total
of five handsets.
Each handset’s registration number appears on the
handset’s home screen.
To register an additional handset to the base
To install handset batteries
1. Push
on the battery cover, and slide
back and remove the cover.
2. Insert the batteries according to the marked
polarity symbols.
3. Slide the battery cover until it snaps into place.
This task requires your PIN number. The factory
default PIN number is 0000.
1. Remove from the base the handset that came
with the base (HS 1).
2. Press and hold
on the base until you hear
one continuous, loud tone.
If you hear the repetitive paging tones, you must
try again and hold longer.
3. On the handset that you are registering, press
beneath Menu on the screen.

If you subscribe to Caller ID services, and you have
missed one or more calls:
A1600 base
•
(Optional) A1600E base
appears on the handset screen.
If the icon is flashing, your Caller ID list is full (20
items), so the oldest call in the list has been deleted.
•
TOTAL X NEW X appears on the base screen,
indicating the total number of missed calls in
storage and how many of them have been reviewed.

If you subscribe to DSL telephone service
If you hear noise during conversations or if the
Caller ID function does not work properly, please
obtain and attach a DSL noise filter.
Attach the filter between the telephone cord and the
telephone communication jack in the wall.

Messages
Charge the batteries
Answering machine messages
Before you use the phone for the first time, fully
charge the batteries for approximately 15 hours.
It is ideal to play answering machine messages
through the base, but you can also play the messages
through a handset.
Recharge the battery regularly.
Note: If

battery charge is low or depleted. If you attempt
to fully recharge the batteries and the battery icon
does not return to
, insert fresh batteries.

Voicemail
If you subscribe to Voicemail services with your
telephone service provider, when one or more
messages are waiting for you, New Voice Mail
appears on the

To store phonebook entries in the base
1. Press alphanumeric keys to enter the number,

beneath Save.

Handset and base are separate
Think of the handset and the base as separate. The
settings and keys are unique for each component,
and they do not apply to the other component.
For example, you enter phonebook numbers
separately for the handset and the base. Volume
controls on one do not apply to the other.
4. Press alphanumeric keys to enter the name,
and then press
beneath Save.
5. Press
and scroll to the ringtone of
your choice for this caller, and then press
beneath Save.

Answering machine or voicemail
Store phonebook entries
Before you get started with setting up your new
phone, it is important for you to decide how you
will store messages. The answering machine and
voicemail service each have unique features and
benefits. Voicemail is purchased through your telephone service provider.
To store phonebook entries in a handset
You must choose one method as a primary message
retrieval method. By default, the answering machine
is turned off. To turn on the answering machine and
set it up, see page 77 in the Clearsounds A1600
DECT 6.0 Operating Manual.
3. Take one of these steps:
• For the very first entry, press
beneath
to select New.
Select, and then press
• If entries exist, press
beneath Select twice.
Name? appears on the screen.
Answering machines do not pick up incoming calls
when the line is engaged. You can primarily use the
message machine and purchase voicemail service
to pick up incoming calls when you are on the line
with another caller. To do this, you must set the
number of “rings before pickup” for the message
machine to be less than the number of rings before
voicemail pickup. The number of rings before
voicemail pickup is determined when you set up
voicemail with your service provider.

Store one-touch base numbers
The eight photo keys on the base can be used to
store your frequently called numbers. You can insert
your personal photos under the keys! You can also
store one emergency speed dial number.

Tips for using the keypads
When you lift a handset from the base or when you
press handset keys, the display and keys remain lit.
After 15 seconds, the backlighting turns off. To turn
it back on again, press
.
Home screen
The home screen is the phone display that you see
when you pick up the phone from the base or when
you press
.

When you press an alphanumeric key on a keypad,
the number is selected (for tasks where numbers
are appropriate) or a letter is selected (for tasks
where letters are appropriate).
Each key has more than one letter available, and
you find a letter by continuing to press the key until
you see it.
•
Letter: Without pausing, press a key repeatedly
until you see the letter of your choice.
•
Pause: Pause between characters, until the
new character position is highlighted.
•
Spaces: On a handset, press 0 to enter a space.
On the base, press #.
•
Corrections: On a handset, press
beneath
Erase to erase the last character that you

Adjust the ringer
Ringer volume
You can adjust the ringer volume from five levels, or
you can turn off the ringtone. If you turn off the ring
tone, new call information appears on the screen,
but the phone does not ring.

or if something is not correct, you can always set
the date and time manually.
Begin by taking these steps to practice basic
navigation through the menus.
All instructions in this manual begin from
the home screen.

Tip: To be sure that AM and PM are displayed
correctly, do the following:
•
Handset: If you specify 12-hour format for
display, you must set the time in the 24-hour
format. This ensures that the display shows
AM and PM correctly. For example, if you want
to set the time to 4:30 PM, set it to 16:30. The
display will show 4:30 PM.
•
Base: After you enter the time, press
specify AM or PM.

telephone service provider, and a new call comes
in during a phone conversation, you can toggle
between callers.

Caller ID service in your area, the caller’s name or
