Introduction
Company Introduction
Volktek is built around the belief that technology is
for people, and with the ideal of making technology
easy to use and affordable a principle reflected in
the choice of name for the company. The name
Volktek is derived from the German words for
“people” and “technology”,
and is formed by bringing these two together: thus
People’s Technology.
Adopting fiber optic technology has allowed
Volktek to offer its customers leading-edge
technology, integrating traditional copper-based
Ethernet interfaces and technologies.
This competitive advantage gives Volktek ’s
customers a cost-effective means of migrating from
a copper-based Ethernet environment to a fiber
optic environment, without incurring excessive recabling costs.
Starting out in 1994, Volktek has grown to a
company largely focused on the R&D, sales and
marketing of a variety of networking products.
Volktek enjoys recognition across the globe,
a t t r a c t i n g 9 5 p e rc e n t o f i t s i n c o m e f r o m
international markets. Volktek’s international clients
are served through a network of offices in the US,
Japan, Korea and Sweden, plus local distributors in

on designing and manufacturing optical Ethernet

of different customers and network conditions. The examples in this catalog are
commonly deployed configurations, but with Volktek’s full range of Ethernet Switches
and Residential Routers many more configurations are possible.

Option 2
Serve more customers
By replacing the NSH-5509 (8 downlink
ports) with the MEN-5214 (12 downlink
ports) this solution allows more customers
to connect to the network with a minimum
of additional capital expenditure.
As the MEN-5214 casing is the same size
as the NSH-5509, an upgrade does not
require new cabinets, and the switches can
simply be directly swapped to immediately
increase the number of users the network
can support.
For a further boost in port density, deploy
the MEN-5228 to offer 24 downlink ports.
This is ideal for deployment in areas with
high occupant density, like high-rise
apartment complexes.
Volktek's compact switches (including the MEN-5314, MEN-5214, MEN-5512, MEN5210, NSH-5509 and NSH-5508) have all the features you would expect from a standard
24-port Layer 2 switch, while having the advantages of a small form-factor, lower
expense and greater ease of managability.

Wireless, IPTV and VoIP enabled by Volktek's routers and Routers

Wireless Router
By replacing RJ-45 to the home with the
NHL-2240 Wireless Router, operators can
increase their ARPU with premium rates for
the extra services offered.
Customers get 802.11n high-speed wireless
data and four RJ-45 ports to plug in their
PCs, TVs and other networked devices.
Modular control over data speeds – enables
the network administrator to offer different

Volktek has introduced features tailor-made for ISPs and Cable ISPs, including measures
to cope with unstable power grid supply and integration with existing network
infrastructure, enabling customers to upgrade at minimal expense.

IP source guard
A security measure to ensure network integrity,
ARP Inspection validates certain network packets
to confirm their validity. Without ARP Inspection
networks are vulnerable to ARP cache poisoning,
which if successful can allow a malicious third party
to intercept and control network traffic.
A security measure designed to counteract an
IP spoofing attack which aims to either inject
malicious data into the network or gain control of
network administration functions. By using DHCP
Snooping, legitimate traffic is identified based on
several markers (MAC, VLAN, IP) to guarantee the
integrity of a particular host attempting to connect
to the network.
QinQ
Also known as Stackable VLANs, QinQ allows
a number of VLANs to be contained within a
package VLAN. This allows for much more efficient
management of multiple services from multiple
users, by, for example, wrapping all VoIP traffic (on
separate VLANs) from a network in one external
VLAN.
Link Aggregation
LACP, or Link Aggregation Control Protocol,
allows the network administrator to bind two or
more ports together into a virtual trunk, allowing
increased data speeds. This is primarily employed
on uplink ports to increase the total bandwidth
coming into the switch from a single uplink source.

TR-069
Multicast VLAN Registration is a protocol which
prevents data from being multicast on multiple
VLANs. Without this protocol in place, network
performance can be impeded by unnecessary
duplication of multicast packets, reducing network
efficiency and slowing data transfer. MVR allows
a single VLAN to be selected as the carrier for
multicast traffic, which then feeds the appropriate
receivers in other VLANs.
Remote management of a CPE (Customer Premise
Equipment) device is possible using TR-069,
which allows both remote control and upgrade
of end-user equipment. Firmware upgrades, for
example, can be automated from a central location,
eliminating the need for costly site visits or manual
upgrades.
RMON
Deployed in order to limit the number or identity
of devices which can connect to a particular port,
MAC Limitation allows the network administrator
to specify a whitelist of allowed MAC addresses,
allowing only devices with those par ticular
addresses to connect to the network. It is also used
to limit the number of devices connected to a
single downlink port.

Per Port MAC Limitation
The L2/L3/L4 Access Control List (ACL) function
allows you to create filter rules for determining
whether or not the Switch will forward specific
packets (based on information contained in the
headers) for security or control reasons.
Crucial for use in ISP/Telco deployments, per port
MAC limitation enables the network admin-istrator
to limit the number of MAC addresses which can
connect from any given node or port.
These criteria cover multiple protocol layers
(including MAC and IP) and port numbers. It
enables network operators to flexibly control the
traffic (like blocking traffic from P2P software, or
throwing away packets destined for unused port
numbers, which might be hacker attacks).

This is essential to control the number of users
connected to the switch at any one time. Without this funtion the end user could theoretically
extend the network hugely, for example in the
case of two adjoining apartments sharing one
internet connection.

IGMP Snooping
IGMP Snooping is a feature which allows the switch
to “listen in” on IGMP (Internet Group Management
Protocol) packets.
IGMP snooping can ver y effectively reduce
multicast traffic from streaming and other bandwidth intensive IP applications.
While a switch that does not understand mul-ticast
will broadcast multicast traffic to all the ports in
a broadcast domain (a LAN), a switch using IGMP
snooping will only forward multicast traffic to the
hosts interested in that traffic.

The MEN-9632 is a high per formance managed
SNMP Layer 3 switch that provides users with 24 x
100/1000Mbps Ethernet in SFP slots and4 Gigabit Combo

Managed 24-slot 100FX SFP + 4 Gigabit SFP L3 Switch
The MEN-6328 is a high performance managed SNMP
Layer 3 switch that provides users with 24 x 100Mbps
Ethernet in SFP slots and 4 Gigabit SFP ports. The SFP
slots support Multi-rate Gigabit and Fast Ethernet. The
Web/SNMP management provides remote control
capability that gives flexible network management and monitoring options. Whether managed through “in-band” SNMP
management station, internet web browser, or through “out-of-band” RS-232 console port, the MEN-6328 facilitates
network operational control and diagnosis.
For increased bandwidth application, MEN-6328 can accommodate up to 16 trunk groups with LACP link aggregation.
Moreover, these trunk ports are with fail-over function to provide redundant back up if one or more of ports are
malfunctioning. It also supports both 802.1Q VLAN and GVRP VLAN Registration thereby simplifying network traffic
segmentation, broadcast domain extension and other associated benefits of constructing VLANs. The abundance of
features translates into increased efficiency and performance in network administration.

The MEN-5314 Managed Switch is an industry-first
small form-factor L2+ all fiber switch, equipped with 12

Gigabit and Fast Ethernet.
The MEN-5314 is a Metro Ethernet Switch with several features suited for deployment in metro networks,

management tools such as fine-tuned VLAN control and RSTP.
Volktek is pleased to be able to deploy the latest model Broadcom chipset in the MEN-5314 to bring Layer 2+
features in a small, cost-effective package. Software features include trunking support, Loop Detection, and
