Introduction
Congratulations on choosing the Eye-Pal Ace Plus device.
ABiSee’s Eye-Pal Ace Ace Plus (hereafter referred to as Ace Plus in this manual) is a
portable electronic text-to-speech device. At the same time, the Ace Plus can be used
to send and receive emails, download and read Bookshare books, and also be used as
a multi-tasking daily assistant for people with visual impairment. Compatible with
refreshable Braille displays, it is also fantastic for people who are totally blind who want
the option to instantly convert text to Braille. It has internal speakers, a rechargeable
battery, and a 10-inch built-in screen. You can enjoy reading any printed material such
as letters, newspapers and books. The text will be displayed in a magnified font and
will be read out loud to you using a naturally sounding voice. You can use the Ace Plus
as an electronic photo album, magnifying glass, alarm clock, and an appointment
reminder as well.
It is a truly portable device, weighing only 3.5 pounds, characterized by a contemporary
design with time-tested simple controls. Thus, it is easy to operate for senior citizens
and people with disabilities-- whether it is being used to read, to record and schedule
voice reminders, or to listen to the alerts. The additional talking clock feature comes in
handy many times a day.
This manual will familiarize you with the functions and features of the Ace Plus. In
order to get the maximum benefit from using your new Ace Plus, please browse the
description of all of the device's functions.
If you have any questions or suggestions concerning the use of the Ace Plus, please
contact us at ABiSee, Inc. using the contact information on the last page of this manual
- your feedback is greatly appreciated.
We hope you enjoy using your Ace Plus.

2 inches by 1 inch with a cord attached)
 the Ace Plus power cord (a cord with a big prong on one end and smaller

The Basics
Reading/Zoom Cameras
Ace Plus has two 5 mega pixel cameras. Both cameras work simultaneously to take a
snapshot of your material. Place the document in the landscape position, directly
alongside the front of the Ace Plus. The optimal camera-viewable area is a letter/A4
paper sized (8.5" by 11").
Object Lighting
Both cameras automatically provide sufficient lighting when taking a snapshot. No
additional light is needed even in a dark room.
Speakers
Any material with printed text placed in front of the Ace Plus will be read out loud using
built-in speakers. Alternatively, headphones can be plugged in or the Voice Mode can
be turned off for those who prefer to read silently.
Position
The top of the device has panel with a set Daisy arrow buttons on the left side, a large
round button in the center, a volume knob on the right toward the back, and a halfmoon shaped Scan Button. The front of the device has a Screen with Thumb Wheels
at the top of each side. When taking the device out of the box and setting it up to scan
a document, place the device on a flat surface with the front of the device facing you
and the top panel facing the ceiling. It must be in this upright, flat position when
scanning a document, but once you have scanned a document, you can hold the
device comfortably on your lap, tilted however you’d like while listening or reading.
Buttons, Controls, Connections
The diagram below has a picture of the device with all of the buttons and controls
labeled. Below the diagram, each of the buttons and controls are described. If you are
reading this manual using this device, please be aware that the labels on the diagram
will not be converted verbatim. When you hear “Top Panel Buttons,” you will be past
the diagram and ready to hear the full description.

9
Charging the Battery
Important: Before the first use, the Ace Plus’s battery needs to be charged for
two hours. To charge the battery on the Ace Plus, use the power supply and power
cord provided as follows: First connect the power cord end with the small prong into
the port at the end of the rectangular part of the power supply. Next, plug the power
supply cord into the power port on the Ace Plus, which is located at the bottom of the
left side panel. Finally, plug the power supply into a power outlet.
Do not use the Ace Plus while it is being charged for the first time. Later on, the device
can be used while it is being charged.
In general, charging a depleted Ace Plus battery to full capacity takes approximately
two hours. A fully charged Ace Plus battery lasts for about five hours of continued use.
Please note that, for safety reasons, only the adapter supplied by ABiSee, Inc. should
be used to charge the Ace Plus device.
Extending Battery Life
In order to ensure that the battery operates efficiently for a long time, disconnect the
Ace Plus from the power source at least once a month and operate it on battery power
until the battery charge goes down to below 15%.

Help
Scan and Read
This application enables you to read printed text like letters, documents, books,
portions of food packages and pill bottle labels, including the fine print. The Ace Plus
reads printed text aloud and displays magnified text on the screen.
Positioning a document
The Ace Plus can scan and read a document that fits in the 8 ½ by 11 inch field directly
in front of the device on a flat surface. Use the base of the device as a guide and place
the long side of the paper so that it is aligned with the length of the base. The
orientation of the document will not influence the recognition of the text.
If you are scanning a document that is smaller than 8 ½ by 11 inch field, the Ace Plus
will provide the best results if you place a blank sheet of 8 ½ by 11 inch paper in the
scanning area and lay your smaller document on top of that. For smaller documents, it
works better to place it toward the right side of the scan field rather than in the center
of the blank page.
13
Scanning and Reading Printed Material
This section provides directions for Scanning and Reading documents via the text and
voice mode. If you prefer to read using a refreshable Braille display, please refer to
Appendix C in this manual for information and instructions.
Scanning and Reading without a Braille Display:
Turn on the Ace Plus device by pressing the power button. You will hear a series of
beeps followed by the announcement: “Main Menu: Scan and Read.” Press the Action
button to choose the Scan and Read option.
Position your document as described above.
Press the Scan Button once – you will hear a shutter sound. The Ace Plus will start
reading the text almost immediately after that.
Do not press any other buttons when doing the Scan and Read operation, as it will
interrupt the scanning/reading process.
Reading modes
The scanned material may be read in:
 Voice Mode: convenient for having the text read aloud - the default choice
 Text Mode: convenient for reading text on the screen quietly without hearing the
voice output.
The Scan and Read modes can be changed under the Settings menu item of the Main
Menu. In order to change the Scan and Read mode, press the Home Button to go the
Main Menu. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to the Settings menu option and
choose this option by pressing the Action Button. Next, use the Right Roller to scroll
down to the General Settings, and press the Action Button to select this option.
Then, use the Right Roller to scroll down to the Reading Mode, and press the Action
Button to select this option. Then, use the Right Roller to scroll down to the desired
option (Voice Mode or Text Mode), and press the Action Button one final time to set
the selection.
Voice Mode
The Voice Mode is the default mode.
Use this mode when you want the Ace Plus to read the text aloud. The Ace Plus will
automatically start reading a few seconds after the Scan Button is pressed. To
pause/resume the reading, press the Action Button. Captured text will be formatted and
14
displayed on the screen in high contrast.
Voice Mode Settings
Reading Speed:
This setting allows adjustment of the speed in which the document is read aloud by the
Ace Plus. If you would like to be able to adjust the reading speed with the Left Roller
while reading a document, you can choose to set the Left Roller Mode to “Reading
Speed.” You can also set a Reading Speed from the General Settings Menu which will
keep the reading speed at a set pace you choose once. By default, the Left Roller
Mode will be set to Font Magnification, which will allow you to control the font size as
you read. If you would rather use the Left Roller to control reading speed as you read
instead of using it to control Font Magnification as you read, you can switch the Left
Roller Mode to “Reading Speed” by doing the following:
Press the Home Button to go to the Main Menu. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to
Settings and choose it by pressing the Action Button. You will hear “General Settings.”
Select this by pressing the Action Button. Use the Right Roller to Scroll to Left Roller
Mode and select it with the Action Button. You will hear “Reading Speed.” Press the
action button to set your Left Roller Mode to Reading Speed. To change the Left Roller
Mode back to Font Magnification, use this same process, but when you are in the
General Settings menu, and you then choose “Left Roller Mode,” you will need to scroll
past “Reading Speed” until you come to “Font Magnification,” and then press the Action
Button to set the mode to Font Magnification.
In order to change and set the Reading speed from the Settings, press the Home
Button to go to the Main Menu. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to the Settings
menu item, and press the Action Button to select it. Use the Right Roller to scroll
down to General Settings, and select it with the Action Button. Then, use the Right
Roller to scroll down to Reading Speed, and select it with the Action Button. Next,
use the Right Roller to scroll between the speed values from 1 (the slowest) to 10 (the
fastest). Stop at the speed value you would like to select and set it by pressing the
Action Button one final time.
Voice/Language:
To adjust the setting for your preferred reading voice or language, press the Home
Button go the Main Menu. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to the Settings option,
and press the Action Button to choose it. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to the
General Settings, and press the Action Button to select it. Next, use the Right
Roller to scroll down to the Voice option, and choose it by pressing the Action
Button. Then, use the Right Roller to scroll through available language/voice
combinations and stop at your preference. Press the Action Button one final time to
set the selection.
15
The reading language and language of the document need to match. If the language of
the document does not match the selected reading language, the text recognition will
not be accurate.
To Navigate Through Text:
The five standard Daisy Buttons are used for text navigation. Pressing the left or right
arrow button allows you to, respectively, move to the previous or next word. The Ace
Plus reads aloud. Pressing the up or down arrow buttons allows you to, respectively,
move to the top or bottom of the page. Scrolling up or down with the Right Roller
allows you to move, respectively, to the previous or next line. Press and hold the Daisy
center button while repeatedly pressing the right arrow button to spell out the next
word. Press and hold the Daisy center button while pressing the left arrow button to
spell out the previous word. Press the Action Button to pause or resume reading.
By default, the Ace Plus will recognize text columns as separate pages. If you wish to
disable the column recognition in order to accurately read tabulated text, press and
hold the left and right arrow buttons simultaneously until you hear the announcement,
"switched to table mode." Press the same two buttons again when you want to switch
back.
Press the up and down arrow buttons simultaneously to hear the orientation of the
document.
Text Mode
In Text Mode, the scanned document is presented on the screen as an electronic book
(e-book). The number of lines on the page depends on magnification. Because the
width of the Ace Plus screen is the same as the width of a letter-size page, you can
read your document as if it were a large font e-book, where you control the size of the
font with the Left Roller. (Please note: the Left Roller Mode must be at its default “Font
Magnification” mode in order to be able to control the size of the font. See the previous
section for instructions on how to switch Left Roller Mode options). Use the Right
Roller to move one line up/down.
Generic Scan and Read Settings
Generic Scan and Read settings apply to both reading modes.
Font, Font Size, Contrast:
In order to adjust the setting for your preferred font, font size or contrast, press the
Home Button to go the Main Menu. Use the Right Roller to scroll down to the
Settings menu item. Press the Action Button to confirm the menu item selection.
Use the Right Roller to scroll down to General Settings. Press the Action Button to
select this menu choice. Then, use the Right Roller to scroll down to one of the
16
options: Font, Font Size or Contrast. Press the Action Button to confirm the menu
item selection. Then, use the Right Roller to scroll through available options. Press
the Action Button one final time to set the selection.
Reading Volume:
Turn the Volume Knob clockwise to increase the volume of the voice. Turn the knob
counterclockwise to decrease it.
Tables and Spreadsheets:
By default, the Ace Plus will recognize text columns as separate pages. If you wish to
disable the column recognition in order to accurately read tabulated text, press and
hold the left and right arrow Buttons simultaneously until you hear the announcement
"Switched to table mode." Press the same two Buttons again when you want to switch
back.
Reading tall food packaging:
Tall food packages, such as a cracker box, can be read as long as the top of the
package does not come closer than four inches from the camera lens. For packages
where the entire dimension of the box is four inches or less, place the package under
the right camera only. When placing a package, press and hold the Scan Button for
three seconds - that way the camera will bring the item into sharp focus before taking
the snap shot.
Managing Documents
Saving Documents and Books
The Ace Plus allows you to save single-page documents, multi-page documents and
books. Documents and books can be saved internally or on a USB external memory
