COOLPIX in-camera technologies give you
the edge when it comes to taking beautiful
pictures more easily and with greater
enjoyment. Included are innovative functions
that increase shooting opportunities in a
broader range of situations, help to optimize
images, and add a new dimension of fun to
sharing those results.
6
VR image stabilization
VR in low light
VR with slow shutter speeds
Nikon COOLPIX cameras offer an array of VR technologies that produce
blur-free images when shooting in unsteady conditions or at slower shutter
speeds. Selected models are equipped with one of two types of Optical VR,
Lens Shift VR which delivers sharp and steady images effective for shooting
and faster framing with the LCD, or Image Sensor Shift VR, which moves
the image sensor to accurately compensate for camera shake. Other models
offer Electronic VR which applies movement data to image processing to
turn blurred images into beautifully clear results.

Shooting in low light
Shooting fast-moving subjects
Selected COOLPIX models offer ISO capability beyond
the r ange o f c o n v e n t i o n al d ig ita l co mp a cts. An
exciting advantage that greatly increases photographic
possibilities, high ISO capability delivers excellent
exposure in challenging conditions, broadens the scope
of possible subjects and allows scenes to be captured
beautifully without compromising natural light.
Higher light sensitivity makes for better shooting in low light,
providing pleasing pictures without the need for flash or extended
exposure.
High ISO capability enables the selection of faster shutter speeds,
making it easy to capture swift-moving subjects with significantly
better clarity.

Face-priority AF
D-Lighting
In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
Available only with Nikon COOLPIX cameras, the clever Face-priority AF
function helps ensure satisfyingly crisp portraits no matter where the subject
is in the shot. By automatically detecting people's faces in the frame, the
photographer is free to press
the shutter for sharp portraits
with focus exactly where it's
wanted.
Only Nikon delivers the advantage of D-Lighting, a unique technology with
the ability to rescue underexposed images or shots taken with excessive
backlight. Accessible in Playback mode, this innovative feature automatically
creates a copy of the image, adding light and detail added where necessary,
while leaving correctly-exposed areas untouched. As a result, images are
significantly improved in a manner that is much more natural looking.
COOLPIX cameras offer refined red-eye reduction capability that
surpasses other digital compacts. First, a series of pre-flashes
stimulate the subject’s pupils, causing them to constrict. The
camera then analyzes the captured image for the remaining
presence of red eyes, automatically correcting them in-camera
before saving the image to memory.
Note: Face recognition capability
may be limited in some shooting
conditions.

Nikon’s comprehensive EXPEED digital image processing concept incorporates know-how and
technologies accumulated throughout our long history of advances in photographic and digital
imaging development. The custom tuned processing systems for all COOLPIX cameras apply
optimized technologies based on the EXPEED concept to render natural-looking images of the
highest quality, provide quick response and all-round high performance.
Nikon equips each COOLPIX camera with a Zoom-NIKKOR lens. Each lens is built on a proud heritage
of precision camera optics production that delivers superb color and razor-sharp results. And each
demonstrates the same firm commitment to innovative design, craftsmanship, strict quality control,
and reassuring reliability that makes the NIKKOR name synonymous with fine photography.

Smile mode and Blink warning
10.0 megapixels of pure imaging power
Packing stylish elegance, high performance
and advanced functions into the smallest body
among competing compact digital cameras*, the
COOLPIX S550 fits comfortably in the hand and
offers simplified operation.
Exceptional image quality with greater creative
freedom distinguishes the 5x Zoom-NIKKOR
lens (35mm format equivalent) for the COOLPIX S550.
Employing four aspherical elements and
delivering telescopic reach of up to 180mm, its
quality NIKKOR optics also allow macro shooting
from as close as 10 cm from your subject.
Smile mode and blink warning both help in
faithfully recording precious smiles in the brief
instants they appear. Smile mode automatically
releases the shutter when the selected subject
smiles, helping to ensure smiles on the faces of
loved ones. The Smile indicator, activated via
Portrait mode, displays a gauge that changes
when a smile is detected. Blink warning alerts
you when it suspects
that a subject has
blinked, and allows
you to immediately
retake the shot.
That’s plenty of sharp resolution to capture the
finest details, crop creatively and produce beautiful
enlargements. Optimizing performance and color
reproduction is an advanced new image-processing
engine.

Explanation of functions
Effective Megapixels
Active Zoom
Anti-reflection coating (LCD)
The number of pixels that actually make up the image captured by a
digital camera. Images recorded with more effective megapixels will
therefore contain a larger amount of image information, resulting in
higher-level sharpness. See Total Megapixels.
Unlike digital zooms which enlarge image data, active zoom crops the
image from the maximum image size, thus minimizing image deterioration
and delivering high-resolution data.
Anti-reflection coating on the LCD monitor improves visibility and makes
menus a greater pleasure to work with, even outdoors in the sun.
Wide-viewing angle (LCD)
Optimize image
Total Megapixels
Not all pixels record a part of the image. Some are purposely masked off
to receive no light, producing a reference value from which to calibrate
light received by the effective pixels. The number of masked-off pixels
plus the number of effective pixels equals the total number of pixels. See
Effective Megapixels.
In-camera image optimization settings offer a choice of four color filters
for shooting with monochrome filter effects.
LCD monitors with wider viewing angles enhance shooting versatility,
while also making it easy for all to gather round and view images or
slideshows.
1:1 size format
Histogram display
1:1 size format allows photos to be shot using 1:1 (square) perspective.
Histogram display makes it quick and easy to confirm proper exposure as
you shoot.
NIKKOR Lenses
Black border/White border
Highly respected by leading professional photographers, NIKKOR lenses
are renowned for their outstanding autofocus performance, true-to-life
color, high contrast and exceptional sharpness.
Adds a black or white border around the edge of photos at replay, and
saves the results as new image files.
Rotary multi selector
The Rotary multi selector simplifies operation, speeds the selection of
functions, and allows fast circular image scrolling at up to 10 shots per
second.
Mode dial
Vibration Reduction (VR) (Refer to page 7.)
Optical Zoom
COOLPIX cameras offer ample zooming capability. They make it easy to
zoom in for tight portraits, for example, or zoom right out to capture
expansive landscapes.
The custom designed Mode dial provides quick and easy access to greater
personal control over camera operation.
Internal Memory
High ISO
Internal memory gives you the freedom to shoot images at any time,
even when you're not carrying any memory media. It also makes it easy to
transfer images between memory media as you please.
High ISO allows more scenes to be captured
beautifully without compromising natural
li g h t , a n d e n a b l e s fa s te r s h u t te r s p e e d s
for capturing s wif t- moving subjec t s with
maximum clarity.
Direct Printing (PictBridge)
PictBridge direct print capability lets you conveniently connect your
camera direct to a compatible printer — doing away with the need for a
computer.
Automatic ISO sensitivity
Movie with Sound
The camera automatically adjusts light sensitivity to ensure optimal
exposure for sharp results and carefree shooting, even in lower light.
The ability to record movies with sound helps capture so much more of the
moment, letting you record voices along with faces, or background noise
to accompany scenery.
Fixed ISO sensitivity
Manual control over light sensitivity settings can be effective when you
want to shoot in lower lighting conditions or capture fast-moving subjects
with maximum clarity.
35mm (35mm format
equivalent)
Time-lapse Movie mode creates silent movies from still images that you’ve
shot at the interval of your choosing using the Time-lapse feature. Ideal
for capturing action taking place over longer durations, it can be used, for
example, to produce movies of flowers blooming, or clouds rushing across

quick succession, making it easy to capture action as it happens.
The handy Voice Recording function can be used to record hours of sound
when used with sufficient memory media.
Color Options
Color Options let you produce more creative results in a manner similar to
using a filter, letting you change the mood of your images with a choice of
Standard color, Vivid color, Black-and-white, Sepia and Cyanotype.
Pastel mode
Enabled before shooting, Pastel mode creates a soft, impressionistic
image similar to a watercolor painting.
Easy auto mode
Easy auto mode makes photography even easier by taking control of
settings, so you simply turn on the camera and shoot.
Favorite scenes
Register your three favorite scene modes to appear in the main Mode
menu for easier access, and easily change your selections as you please.
Blink warning
Blink warning notifies you when a subject blinks during exposure, and
allows you to immediately retake the shot.
Favorite pictures
Lets you organize images and save them to albums that you create within
the camera.
