Safe Handling of Gasoline:

Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecare in handlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammableand the vaporsare explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan occurwhengasolineis spilled on yourselfor yourclotheswhichcan ignite.Washyour skin and changeclothesimmediately.

• Use onlyan approvedgasolinecontainer.

• Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleor on a truckor trailerbed with a plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson the groundaway fromyour vehiclebeforefilling.

• Whenpractical,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthe truck or trailerand refueliton the ground.If this is notpossible,then refuelsuchequipmenton a trailerwith a portablecontainer,rather thanfrom a gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthe nozzlein contactwith the rimof the fuel tank or containeropeningat all times untilfuelingis complete.Do not use a nozzlelock-opendevice.

• Extinguishall cigarettes,cigars,pipesand other sourcesof

ignition.

• Neverfuel machineindoors.

• Neverremovegas capor add fuel whilethe engineishot or running.Allowengineto cool at leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

• Neveroverfill fueltank. Fill tankto no morethan1/2inchbelow bottomof filler neck to allowspacefor fuel expansion.

• Replacegasolinecapand tighten securely.

• If gasolineisspilled,wipe itoff theengineand equipment.Move

unitto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingthe engine.

• To reducefire hazards,keepmachinefreeof grass, leaves,or otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanup oil or fuel spillageand removeany fuel soakeddebris.

• Neverstorethe machineor fuel containerinsidewherethereis an openflame,spark or pilotlightas on a water heater,space heater, furnace,clothesdryer or othergas appliances.

OPERATION

Do not puthandsor feet near rotatingparts.Contactwith the rotatingpartscan amputatehandsand feet.

• Neveroperatethis machinewithoutgood visibilityor light.Always

be sureof yourfootingand keepa firm hold on the handles.

• Be carefulwhentilling in hard ground.Thetines maycatchin the groundand propelthe tillerforward.If this occurs,let go of the handlebarsand do not restrainthe machine.

• Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingon or crossinggravel surfaces.Stayalert for hiddenhazardsor traffic. Do notcarry passengers.

• Neveroperatethe machineat hightransportspeedson hard or slipperysurfaces.

Removethe staples,breakthe glue on the top flaps,or cut the tapeat the end of the cartonand peel it alongthe top flapto open.

Removeall looseparts.

3.

Cut the cornersand laythe cartondown fiat.

4.

Removeloosepackingmaterial.

UNIT FROM CARTON

1.

Use the handlebarto lift and pullthe tiller backwardsto a flat area.Checkthecarton thoroughlyfor looseparts.

2.

Extendthe controlcableand lay it on thefloor. Be carefulnot to bendor kink the controlcable.

Raisethefine shieldhinge flapassemblyand insertthe depth stakeassemblyin the slot, underthe fineshieldand up through the tine shieldassembly.

4.

Insertthe clevispin throughthe fineshieldand depthstake assemblies.Secureit with the cotterpin.

5.

Insertthe hex bolt intothe top holeof the depthstakeassembly.

Placethe flat washeron the hex boltand threadthe T-knobonto the hex bolt.Tightensecurely.See Figure1.

6.

Tip the tiller backdownso that it restson the tines.

Removethe toptwo boltsand flangelock nutsfrom the handle mountingbrackets,but do not removethe bottombolt and nut.

Lineup the holesin the handlewith the holesin the bracketand securewith the hardwarepreviouslyremoved.

ATTACHING THE CONTROL ROD

1.

Makesurethe handleassemblyis in the highestposition.Referto

the OperationSection.

2.

Removethehairpinclips from the control rod,putthe rubber washersin place.

3.

Insertthe shorter,angledend of the controlrod throughthe indicatorbracketon the shiftcover and secureit with the previously removedhairpinclip. See Figure4.

Removethethreadedeyeboltand nut fromthe cableend.

Routethe clutchcableto the rightside of the handlemounting bracketsand underneaththe handle.

Fastenthe threadedeyeboltontothe bail by securingit from the top with the machinescrew,flat washersand flangelock nut.

Threadtheeyeboltand nut removedearlierinto the internally threadedtube atthe end of thecable. Thethreadengagement shouldbe about3/4".Tightenthe nutagainstthe tubeat the end of the cable. See Figure7.

NOTE:Donot overtightentheclutchcable. Toomuchtensionmay cause it to break. Be certainto checkthe clutchcableadjustment beforeoperatingthe tiller. See page 10for cableadjustmentinstructions.

SET-UP

Tire Pressure

Checkthe air pressurein bothtires.The air pressureshouldbe between15-20PSI.Keep bothtires equallyinflatedto help prevent machinefrom pullingto one side.

Theengine is shippedwithoutoil in theengine.Youmustfill the enginewith oil beforeoperating.Runningthe enginewith insufficient

Initial Use

1.

Removethe oil fill dipstick.

2.

Placethetiller on levelground,usea funnelto emptyentire contentsof the oil bottle providedwith the unit intothe engine.

3.

Replacethe oil fill dipstickand tighten.

Checkingand adding oil

1.

Placethetiller on a flat, levelsurface.

2.

Removethe oil fillercap/dipstickand wipethe dipstickclean. See

Figure8.

Fuel Recommendations

Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor lowleadedto minimizecombustion chamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith

up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButyl Ether)can be used. Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting

dirt, dust,or waterinthe fuel tank.DO NOTuse E85 gasoline.

Refuelin a well-ventilatedarea with the enginestopped.Do not smokeor allowflamesor sparksin the areawherethe engineis refueledor wheregasolineisstored.

Donot overfillthe fueltank.After refueling,makesurethe tank cap is closed properlyand securely.

Be carefulnotto spillfuel whenrefueling.Spilledfuel or fuel vapor may ignite.If any fuelis spilled,makesurethe area isdry before startingthe engine.

Adding Fuel

ADJUSTMENTS

Priorto operatingyour tiller,carefullyread and followall instructions below.Performall adjustmentsto verifyyourtiller is operatingsafely and propery.

Clutch Cable

NOTE:Servicethe enginewith oil and gasolinebeforecheckingthis adjustment.Referto the separateEngineOperator'sManualpacked with yourtillerfor properfuel and engineoil recommendations.

1.

Positionthe tiller so thefront counterweightis againsta solid object,suchas a wall.

2.

With thegear selectionleverin NEUTRAL,start theengine.Refer

to the separateEngineOperator'sManual.

3.

Standingon the right sideof the tiller,examinethe belt (insidethe beltcover).It shouldnot be turning.

Handle

The handleshouldbe adjustedso thatwhenthe tiller is digging3-4" intothe soil,the handlefalls to aboutwaste-high.Rotatethe handle adjustmentlock rearward,movethe handleto thedesiredpositionand then lock intoplace by rotatingthe handleadjustmentlock forwardto securethe handle.See Figure11.

If the beltturns withoutthe bail engaged,adjustit by un-threading the internallythreadedtubeat the end of the cablea few turns clockwise-- when standingin theoperator'sposition-- and then retightenthe nut againstthetube. See Figure10.

Now movethe shiftleverto the FORWARDposition.

6.

Carefullyengagethe clutchby lifting theclutchcontrol bail against the handle.Thewheels shouldspin.

7.

If thewheelsdo not spinwith the tiller in forward,adjust by unthreadingthe tube at the end of the cablea fewturns counterclockwise-- when standingin operator'sposition-- and then retightenthe nut againstthetube.

8.

Recheckbothadjustments,and readjustas necessary.

9.

After tilling,if the tines stop moving,re-adjustthe cables.

NOTE:A secondarycableadjustmentis availableif you reachthe pointthat additionaladjustmentis needed.See the Serviceand

Maintenancesectionfor secondaryadjustmentinstructions.

RECOIL STARTER HANDLE

This handleisusedto startthe engine.

AiR FILTER

Theair filter isa device on the engineair intakethat preventsdust and dirt enteringthe engine.See Figure12.

MUFFLER

Engineexhaustexitsthe enginevia the muffler.See Figure12.

CLUTCH CONTROL

Theclutchcontrol islocatedbeneaththe handle.Squeezingthe clutch handleagainstthe handleengagesthewheeland thedrive mechanisms.See Figure12.

The throttlecontrolregulatesthe speedof the engine andwill shutoff the enginewhenit ismovedintothe stop_ position.Thethrottle

control movesbetweenthe FAST,_ (rabbit),SLOW_ (turtle) and

STOP_ positions.

CHOKE CONTROL

TO ENGAGE DRIVE & TINES

Toadjust thedepth stake,removethe clevispin and cotterpin. Move the depthstaketo the desiredsettingand securewith the clevispin and cotter pin.See Figure14.

Do not pushdownon the handlebarsto try to makethe tillertill more deeply.This preventsthe wheelsfrom holdingthetiller backand can allowthe tinesto rapidlypropelthetiller, whichcould resultin lossof control,propertydamage,or personalinjury.

To moveforward:

1.

Forforward motionof thewheels usethe gear selectionhandle and for powertothe tines pull the clutchcontrolup against the handlebar.

2.

Whentilling, letthe wheelspull the machinewhile thetines dig.

Walk slowlybehindthe tillerallowingit to moveat its ownpace whilekeepinga securegrip on the handlebarwith yourelbows flexed.

3.

Releasethe bailto stopthe wheelsand tines.

To movein reverse:(Do not till in reverse)

1.

Releasethe ClutchControl.Then lift the handlebaruntilthe tines are off the ground.

2.

Pull back on the gear selectionhandle,and walk backwardswith the machine.

NOTE: In reversemode,the tines will reverserotation.

TURNING THE TILLER

1.

Practiceturningthetiller in a level,open area.Be very carefulto keepyourfeet and legs awayfromthe tines.

2.

To begina turn, lift the handlebarsuntilthe tines are out of the groundand the engineand tines are balancedoverthe wheels.

3.

With the tillerbalanced,pushsidewayson the handlebarto steer in the directionof the turn. After turning,slowlylowerthe tines into the soil to resumetilling.

SETTING THE DEPTH

Tillingdepthis controlledbythe depthstakewhichcan be adjustedto five differentsettings.Adjust the sideshieldsas you adjustthe depth stake.

• Whenusingthe tillerfor the firsttime, usethe secondadjustment hole from thetop (1"of tillingdepth).

• Whenbreakingup sodand for shallowcultivation,usethe setting which gives 1"of tillingdepth (secondholefrom the top). Place the sideshields in their lowestposition.

• Forfurther depth, raisethe depthstakeand side shieldsand also makeone or two morepassesoverthearea.

• Whentillingloosesoil, the depthstakemay be raisedto its highestposition(use bottomadjustmenthole)to givethe deepest tillingdepth. Raisethe sideshieldsto their highestposition.

• Totransporttiller, lowerthedepth stake(use topadjustment hole).

CLEARING

THE TINES

Beforeclearingthetines by hand,stop theengine,allowall moving parts to stop and disconnectthe sparkplug wire. Failureto followthis warningcouldresult in personalinjury.

•

Thetines havea self-clearingaction whicheliminatesmostof the tanglingof debris. However,occasionallydry grass,stringystalks or tough vinesmay becometangled.Followthese proceduresto help avoidtanglingand to clearthe tines, ifnecessary.

•

To reducetangling,set thedepth regulatordeep enoughto get maximum"chopping"actionas the tines chopthe materialagainst the ground.Also, try to till undercrop residuesor covercrops whilethey are green,moistand tender.

•

Whiletilling,try swayingthe handlebarsfrom sideto side(about

6" to 12").This "fishtailing"action oftenclears the tinesof debris.

TILLING TiPS & TECHNIQUES

Whencultivating(breakingup thesurfacesoilaroundthe plants todestroyweeds,SeeFigure16),adjustthe tinesto dig only1"to

2"deep.Usingthe shallowtillingdepthhelpspreventinjuryto the plantswhoserootsoftengrowclosetothe surface.If needed,lift up on the handlebarsslightlyto preventthetinesfromdiggingtoo deeply.(Cultivatingon a regularbasisnotonlyeliminatesweeds,it alsoloosensand aeratesthesoil forbettermoistureabsorptionand fasterplantgrowth.)Wateringthegardenarea a few dayspriorto tillingwillmaketillingeasier,as willlettingthenewlyworkedsoilset fora dayor two beforemakinga final,deep tillingpass.

Tilling Depth

•

This isa DDT(dual-directiontine)tiller.Asthewheelspullforward, thetines rotatebackward.As thewheelspull rearward,the tines rotateforward.Thiscreatesan "uppercut"fineactionwhichdigs deeply,uprootingsoilandweeds.Don'toverloadtheengine,butdig as deeplyas possibleon eachpass On laterpasses,thewheels maytendto spinin the softdirt. Helpthem alongbyliftingup slightlyon thehandlebar(onehand,palmup,worksmosteasily).

•

Avoidthetemptationto pushdown on the handlebarsin an attemptto force thetiller to dig deeper.Doingso takesthe weight off the poweredwheels,causingthem to losetraction.Without

the wheelsto hold the tillerback,the tines will attemptto propel towardsthe operatoror awayfrom the operator.

• The rampsmustbe strongenoughto supportthe combined weightof the tiller and anyhandlers.The rampsshouldprovide good tractionto preventslipping;they shouldalsohaveside rails to guide the tilleralong the ramps;and they shouldhavea locking deviceto securethemto the vehicle.

• The handlersshouldwearsturdyfootwearthat will help to prevent slipping.

• Positionthe loadingvehicle so that the rampangle is as flat as possible(the less inclineto the ramp,the better).Turnthe

vehicle'sengineoff and applythe parkingbrake.

• Whengoing up the ramps,standin the normaloperatingposition and pushthetiller aheadof you. Havea personat each sideto turn the wheels.

• Whengoing downthe ramps,walk backwardwith the tiller followingyou. Keepalertfor anyobstaclesbehindyou. Positiona personat eachwheelto controlthe speedof the tiller. Nevergo downthe rampstiller-first,as the tillercouldtip forward.

• Placewoodenblockson thedownhillsideof the wheelsif you needto stop the tillerfrom rollingdownthe ramp.Also, usethe blocksto temporarilykeepthe tiller in placeon the ramps(if necessary),and to chockthe wheelsin placeafterthe tiller is in the vehicle.

Transmission Lubrication

The transmissionis pre-lubricatedand sealedat thefactory.It requires no checkingunlessthe transmissionisdisassembled.Tofill with grease,lay the righthalfof thetransmissionon itsside, add 22 ounces of Benalene920 grease,and assemblethe left half to it. Used motoroil maycause skincancer ifrepeatedlyleft in contactwith the skin for prolongedperiods.Althoughthis isunlikelyunlessyou handleusedoil on a daily basis,itis still advisableto thoroughlywash yourhandswith soapand wateras soonas possibleafter handling usedoil.

Removing/Installing

a Tine Assembly

Secondary Clutch Cable Adjustment

Removethebelt coveras describedunderBelt Replacement earlierin this section.

PREPARING

THE ENGINE

Enginesstored between30 and 90 days needto be treatedwith a gasolinestabilizerand enginesstoredover90 days needto be drained of fuel to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel systemor on essentialcarburetorparts.If the gasolinein yourenginedeterioratesduringstorage,you mayneed to havethecarburetor,and other fuel systemcomponents,servicedor replaced.

Removeall fuel from tank by runningengine untilit stopsfrom lack of fuel.

Neverleaveengineunattendedwhileit is running.

PREPARING THE TILLER

Whenthe tillerwon't be usedfor an extendedperiod,prepareit for storageas follows:

1.

Cleanthe tillerand engine.

2.

Followthe lubricationrecommendations and hardware.

3.

Storethe tiller in a clean,dry area.

4.

Neverstore the tillerwith fuel in the fuel tank in an enclosedarea wheregas fumescould reachan open flameor spark,or where ignitionsourcesare present(spaceheaters,hot waterheaters, furnaces,etc.).

Changethe oil. See ChangeEngineOil in SERVICEAND

3.

Removespark plugand pourabouta 1/2ounceof engineoil into the cylinder.Replacespark plug and crankit slowlyto distribute oil.

4.

Cleandebrisfrom aroundtheengine and the muffler.Touchup

any damagedpaint,and coat otherareasthat may rustwith a light film of oil.

5.

Storein a clean,dry and wellventilatedarea awayfromany appliancethat operateswith a flame or pilot light, suchas a furnace, water heater,or clothesdryer.Alsoavoidany areawith a spark producingelectricmotor,or wherepowertoolsare operated.

6.

If possible,also avoidstorageareaswith high humidity,because that promotesrust and corrosion.

7.

Keeptheengine levelin storage.Tiltingcan causefuel or oil leakage.

4. Claimsand CoverageExclusions

Warrantyclaimsshall be filed in accordancewith the provisionsof the

Sears EngineWarrantyPolicy.Warrantycoverageshall be excludedfor failuresof WarrantedPartswhichare not original Sears partsor because of abuse, neglector impropermaintenanceas setforth in the Sears

EngineWarrantyPolicy.Sears is not liableto coverfailuresof Warranted

Partscausedby the use of add-on, non-original,or modifiedparts.

5. Maintenance

Any WarrantedPart whichis not scheduledfor replacementas required maintenanceor whichis scheduledonly for regularinspectionto the effect of "repairor replace as necessary"shallbe warrantedas to defectsfor the warrantyperiod.Any WarrantedPartwhich is scheduledfor replacement as requiredmaintenanceshallbe warrantedas to defectsonly forthe periodof time up to the first scheduledreplacementfor that part. Any replacementpart that is equivalentin performanceand durabilitymay be usedin the performanceof any maintenanceor repairs.The owneris responsibleforthe performanceof all requiredmaintenance,as defined in the SearsOperatingand MaintenanceInstructions.

6. ConsequentialCoverage

Coveragehereundershallextend to the failure of any engine components caused bythe failureof any WarrantedPartstill underwarranty.

Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and

Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label

Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears Brands Management

Corporation makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels.

The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Maintenance Instructions. The following categories are used:

Moderate:

Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time.

Intermediate:

Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time.

Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time.

For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions

Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years.

The Air index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label.

States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards.

For Phase 2 certified engines, the

Emissions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements.

For engines less than 225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250 hours and A = 500 hours.

For engines of 225 cc or more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and A = 1000 hours.

This is a generic representation of the emission label typically found on a certified engine.

Moderado:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 125 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.

Inmediato:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 250 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.

Extendido:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 500 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor.

Por ejemplo, una cortadora de c6sped tJpica que se empuja desde arras se usa entre 20 y 25 horas por aSo. Por Io tanto, el Periodo de Duraci6n de Emisiones de un motor con una clasificaci6n intermedia sena equivaiente a entre 10 y 12 aSos.

Laciasificaci6n de aire es un nQmero calculado para describir el nivel relativo de emisiones para un grupo de motores en particular.

Cuanto menor sea la clasificaci6n de aire, mayor es la limpieza del motor. La informaci6n se presenta de forma grAfica en la etiqueta de emisiones.
