Installation requirements for washers
Electrical connection
^ A power cord is only supplied with the W 1986.
^ All other connections are made at the terminal block inside the machine.
^ To protect the DOS electronic, the power cord should not be positioned close to the deter-
gent dispenser pump.
^ Care must be taken to ensure proper connection, 3 live and 1 ground, no neutral (exclud-
ing single phase models W 1986, WS 5101, WS 5141.) If a neutral connection is made
there will be a loud hum.
IMPORTANT: Never remove the side housing panels!
Water connection
^ Hoses are supplied with the washer.
^ Connect the hoses as follows:
- Cold = softened or cold water
- Hard = cold water
- Warm = hot water
* A Y-adapter may be used if only one cold water source is available.
Drainage
^ Use a 3" rubber coupling for connection to the drain system.
- If more than one washer is connected to the drain system, verify that the system
can handle the expected discharge.
^ If the unit will not be drained via a floor drain, a base and a “p-trap” must be installed.
Call Miele’s Professional Dept. for more information. (WS 5240 and WS 5320 come standard with a base.)
IMPORTANT: Drain must be vented!
Shipping struts must be removed for proper operation!

Electrical connection
^ A power cord is only supplied with the T1576.
^ All other connections are made at the terminal block inside the machine.
^ Verify that the unit is in phase:
- If the dryer is in phase, the under pressure within the dryer will suck the door close.
- If the dryer is in phase, the ventilation motor will turn clockwise.

Calculation of air outlet, air inlet and ventilation cross sections
Calculating the total pipe length and diameter of the air outlet pipe, and air inlet pipe
where applicable.
The length of pipe required as well as the number and shape of the bends are always determined by the structural features of the building.
^ The pipe should be as short as possible with as few bends as possible. Too many bends
impair the efficiency of the ventilation.
^ It is also necessary to decide whether the air outlet pipe should be made of flexible pipe
or of metal with round or square cross section.
^ If the dryer is connected to a central air intake system, that pipe length must also be
added in to the total. The maximum length of the air intake pipe must not exceed fifty
percent of the total effective length.
^ The venting system for exhaust air should be made of approved nonflammable materials
only.
Note
With upward sloping air venting pipes a condensate drain must be installed at the lowest
point. The condensate should be collected in a suitable container or if possible drained
away through a suitable drain.
Where more than one machine is (as an exception) ducted into a common flue, it is essential that each machine have a non-return flap.

If the dryer is connected to a piped central air intake, then additional ventilation openings in
the room are not usually required.

Connection to a central air intake
,When the protective cap is removed, live components may be electrically exposed.
To maintain safety a plastic or metal pipe must be fitted to the fresh air intake for a minimum
length of 35 7/16".
Each connection point must be secured with 2 screws.
The air intake pipe must not protrude into the machine.
