Service Advisor Feature Pack
Carriers are deploying next-generation networks that
provide converged IP services over a common Ethernet
Transport network in an effort to maximize revenue.
With this convergence, network operators face complex
operational challenges. With as many as hundreds of
thousands of subscribers with varying requirements all
supported over a common platform, the complexity in
managing the network increases significantly.
The Ridgeline™ Service Advisor Feature Pack integrates key
features and solutions that enable carriers to monetize their
networks by shifting from reactive circuit monitoring to proactive
service management.
The Command Line Interface (CLI) method of configuration, most commonly used today, involves time-consuming manual tasks to provision services. This increases
the probability of human error which adversely impacts
service fulfillment and can subsequently delay service
revenue. Providing service assurance is also a challenging task since effective monitoring and troubleshooting
of services requires having detailed, real-time visibility
into the network.

Operational Simplicity
Network operators need a way to view not only the devices in their network, but also the inter-device connections.
Ridgeline provides a flexible and intuitive user interface that makes navigation and performing network operations
easier.
Network operators need a way to view not only the devices in
their network, but also the inter-device connections. Ridgeline
provides a flexible and intuitive user interface that makes navigation and performing network operations easier. Its dockable
window interface lets the user view critical status as well as
configuration of different devices simultaneously. The topology
view in Ridgeline displays every element of the network and
the connections between them in Layer 2 and Layer 3 with an
alarm context.
Ridgeline provides a Java-based client/server model that allows
multi-user access. The client is automatically updated when
there is a new version available on the server. For deployments
with multiple Ridgeline servers, the user can designate one of
the servers to be the primary, which will collect status from
other servers and present them in a consolidated view.
Configuration management archives and reloads device configuration and performs configuration differentials or baselining for auditing purposes. Firmware management
obtains BootROM, software versions and availability information, and performs multi-step upgrades—at once or
scheduled—for single or multiple devices.
The Ridgeline Alarm Manager provides fault detection and
alarm handling for the network devices monitored. The Alarm
Manager provides a set of predefined, enabled alarms that
report conditions such as authentication or login failures,
device problems, reachability problems, or device reboots.
The Alarm Manager also lets network operators define their
own alarms and conditions, such as repeated occurrences or
exceeding threshold values. Operators can enable and disable
individual alarms as well as specify the actions to be taken
when an alarm occurs.

Service providers must be able to quickly and easily change network configurations. Whether these changes are new
network devices, transport provisioning or the addition of new services, configuration can be slow and cumbersome
using CLI. Misconfigurations and slow deployment of new services or devices can be a common side effect.

The powerful visualization capabilities of Ridgeline provide
detailed graphical representations of the network, coupled with
point-and-click provisioning, to reduce the likelihood of human
error. A user-friendly interface allows the operator to select
and auto-provision specific network elements by choosing the
appropriate application to execute from a drop-down menu.
The point-and-click provisioning capabilities enable the network operator to provision the following services and protocols:
• VLAN
• PB (Provider Bridges)
• PBB (Provider Backbone Bridges)
• Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS)
• E-Line and E-LAN services
• The E-Line and E-LAN service structure includes a
bandwidth management capability to ensure that service
profiles are accurately applied.
Ridgeline also contains a powerful scripting capability that
allows network operators to automate provisioning of devices
and protocols. It provides a comprehensive set of programming
control structures that allow an operator to create complex
provisioning workflows. These workflows (scripts) can be
run once or scheduled using a convenient job scheduler. In
addition, Ridgeline manages and allows the customization of
ExtremeXOS® CLI scripts—an efficient way to roll out a network
using configuration templates.

Service Assurance
To reduce customer churn, service providers must deliver a consistently positive customer experience. Their primary concerns are a reduction of service quality or an outage. Service providers cannot risk losing customers who are dissatisfied.
In today’s increasingly competitive marketplace where subscribers are on the constant lookout for new services that
provide them the best value, enhancing subscriber experience
is crucial. Service assurance requires real-time detailed visibility
into the network and proactive detection of network problems
to help provide uninterrupted, high-quality services that subscribers count on.
The CLI method makes service assurance a significant challenge. Once the operator is notified of an alarm, the process
involved in finding out its impact on services requires a series
of tasks. For example, suppose an alarm indicates that a particular link is down. The operator must first determine which
VLANs are on the link. Next, the operator must figure out
which network elements are associated with these VLANs. The
operator must then determine which ports are active or inactive on those network elements, and then make references to
the database to determine which services are mapped to these
active ports. These steps require the operator to have detailed
knowledge about the network when executing the CLI commands. Clearly, having to perform these tasks for every alarm
can be tedious and time-consuming.
Ridgeline addresses this problem by abstracting the complexity
of the converged network, with detailed and easy-to-understand representations of transport and service protocols. It provides a detailed consolidated view of the entire network
with up/down status, and a dynamic alarm context visual
topology that provides a quick view of physical links, transport
protocols, or services which have been impacted. This detailed
information provides network operators the ability to easily
determine how many subscribers have been affected at which
location. Based on the magnitude of impact, network operators
can effectively prioritize their troubleshooting tasks for resolution. The upfront information can also significantly reduce the
mean-time-to-repair of service issues, enabling carriers to
enhance subscriber experience.
For example, if an operator selects a particular E-Line service,
the corresponding active path (including network devices and
links) are highlighted on the topology map and the service
status is shown. If a link failed in the active path, the network
reconverges and the new active path (and service status)
updates based on this new information.
In addition to the alarm context visualization and service status,
Ridgeline provides a customizable alarm manager, reports and real-time statistics to enable network operators to gauge
the overall network health with respect to alarms, utilization
and events.

Service Engineering
While converged networks allow a greater use of physical resources, they also introduce a layer of complexity which
can be difficult to manage. Ridgeline abstracts the complexity of multiple protocols running on the same physical
resources and empowers the operator to engineer the network for greater link efficiency.
A service provider’s profitability largely depends on how many
service instances can be supported on a given infrastructure
without compromising Quality of Service. More services can be added onto the network by increasing efficiency through intelligent and proper use of network
resources. However, gaining detailed visibility into the network
using CLI methods in an effort to manage and achieve optimum network utilization can be a very complicated and timeconsuming process.
To ease this challenge, Ridgeline provides simplified service
engineering capabilities. Powerful network discovery and visualization provide operators
easier access to detailed network usage information such as
bandwidth, link, or service utilization statistics as well as traffic
patterns. Based on this information, network operators can
quickly find optimum traffic routes and make the most of bandwidth and link capacities to avoid traffic congestion that may
otherwise impact time-critical services. Once optimum paths
are discovered, re-routes are more easily established using
simple point and click.
Ridgeline provides network operators the ability to easily
create, visualize, and manage transport technologies such as
Provider Bridging (PB) and Provider Backbone Bridging (PBB).
Network operators can also more easily create VLANs and
EAPS resiliency domains. These capabilities along with utilization statistics allow network operators to more quickly determine if additional subscribers and/or services can be added
onto the network without impacting existing services.
Ridgeline provides complete end-to-end workflows to import
and reconcile existing E-Line and E-LAN-based customer
services in the network. The workflows help network operators to take control of existing services in the network and gain
visibility into customer services and the underlying transport.
Once imported and reconciled, the services can be modified
and visualized.
