1.1
Brief Description VPB 40.1
The VPB 40.1 is a control cabinet PC that forms a PC-based operator terminal
when combined with a VDP 16, VDP 40 or VDP 60 display. Depending on the
application or configuration, the operator terminal can also fulfill the control
functionalities.

The VPB 40.1 is connected to the G4 or G5 serial display interface of VDP 16,
VDP 40 or VDP 60 via a connecting cable with a length of up to 30 m. Thus,
the VPB 40.1 can be installed in the control cabinet and the display in its door
or at the machine.
The VPB 40.1 consists of two tightly connected parts:

The PC box contains the actual PC, including the hard disk and the power
supply unit with uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Depending on the
variant the PC box provides three or four slots. The standard interface and
some special interfaces are available on a plugboard.

The display interface and a RS422 interface (X39), which is to be used as
alternative for the 24 V interface XCOM1, are integrated in the second
housing part mounted on the PC box. Furthermore, five LEDs to display
device states and errors are arranged on this housing. Also, the optionally
available DVD ROM drive or the CD RW recorder system are mounted
here.

Characteristic Features
The VPB 40.1 is available in two different housing variants. The possible var‐
iants are described in the designation codes, see chapter 11.1 "Type Desig‐
nation Code" on page 73. Principally, they differ in the used PC box equipped
with 3 or 4 slots.

Operating System
For license reasons the VPB 40.1 is only delivered with already installed oper‐
ating system.

Commissioning
Mount the device properly, see also chapter 5 "Dimensions, Installation" on
page 25. Then connect the device to the power supply and, if required, to the
network.

2.1
Appropriate Use
2.1.1
Introduction
Rexroth products represent state-of-the-art developments and manufacturing.
They are tested prior to delivery to ensure operational safety and reliability.
WARNING
Physical injury and material damage might re‐
sult from an inappropriate use of the products!
The products are designed for the use in an industrial environment and may
therefore only be used for the intended purpose. If they are not used as inten‐
ded, situations causing personal injury as well as material damage can occur.
Rexroth disclaims as manufacturer any warranty, liability or dam‐
ages occurring due to inappropriate use of the products. Further‐
more, Rexroth is not paying any compensation. The user is
responsible for any risks resulting from inappropriate use of the
products.
Before using Rexroth products, the following requirements must be met to en‐
sure appropriate use of the products:

Anyone handling one of the Rexroth products in any way has to read and
understand the respective safety-related guidelines as well as the instruc‐
tions on appropriate use.

Hardware products have to remain in their original state, in other words,
no modification regarding the design are allowed. Software products must
not be decompiled and their source codes must not be modified.
●
Damaged or faulty products must not be implemented or put into opera‐
tion.
●
It must be ensured that the products are installed as specified in the doc‐
umentation.
Areas of Use and Application
The VPB 40.1 by Rexroth is a control cabinet PC and becomes a PC-based
operator terminal when used with a VDP display. Depending on the application
and configuration, control functionality can also be carried out.
NOTICE
Danger of destruction of the device if not ex‐
pressly stated accessories, add-on compo‐
nents and other components, cables, conduits,
software and firmware is used.
The VPB 40.1 may only be used with the accessories and add-on components
specified in this documentation. Components not named expressly mentioned
must neither be mounted nor connected. The same applies to cables and con‐
duits.
The products may only be operated with the expressly stated configurations
and component combinations as well as with the software and firmware which
is given and specified in the respective functional description.

The VPB 40.1 may only be operated under the assembly conditions and in‐
stallation conditions, in the specified position of application and under the
specified ambient conditions (temperature, degree of protection, humidity, EMC
etc.) given in this documentation.
2.2
Inappropriate Use
The application of VPB 40.1 that are not whithin the specicified areas of appli‐
cation or under operating conditions deviating from the operating conditions
and technical data specified in the documentation are considered as "inappro‐
priate".
VPB 40.1 must not be used if ...
●
it is exposed to operating conditions that do not fulfill the ambient condi‐
tions specified. For instance, operation under water, in case of extreme
variations of temperature or in extreme maximum temperatures is not al‐
lowed.
●
the intended applications have not expressly been allowed by Rexroth.

3.1
Definitions of Terms
Application Documentation
Application documentation comprises the entire documentation used to inform
the user of the product about the use and safety-relevant features for config‐
uring, integrating, installing, mounting, commissioning, operating, maintaining,
repairing and decommissioning the product. The following terms are also used
for this kind of documentation: User Guide, Operation Manual, Commissioning
Manual, Instruction Manual, Project Planning Manual, Application Manual, etc.
Component
A component is a combination of elements with a specified function, which are
part of a piece of equipment, device or system. Components of the electric drive
and control system are, for example, supply units, drive controllers, mains
choke, mains filter, motors, cables, etc.
Control System
A control system comprises several interconnected control components placed
on the market as a single functional unit.
Device
A device is a finished product with a defined function, intended for users and
placed on the market as an individual piece of merchandise.
Electrical Equipment
Electrical equipment encompasses all devices used to generate, convert, trans‐
mit, distribute or apply electrical energy, such as electric motors, transformers,
switching devices, cables, lines, power-consuming devices, circuit board as‐
semblies, plug-in units, control cabinets, etc.
Electric Drive System
An electric drive system comprises all components from mains supply to motor
shaft; this includes, for example, electric motor(s), motor encoder(s), supply
units and drive controllers, as well as auxiliary and additional components, such
as mains filter, mains choke and the corresponding lines and cables.
Installation
An installation consists of several devices or systems interconnected for a de‐
fined purpose and on a defined site which, however, are not intended to be
placed on the market as a single functional unit.
Machine
A machine is the entirety of interconnected parts or units at least one of which
is movable. Thus, a machine consists of the appropriate machine drive ele‐
ments, as well as control and power circuits, which have been assembled for
a specific application. A machine is, for example, intended for processing,
treatment, movement or packaging of a material. The term "machine" also cov‐
ers a combination of machines which are arranged and controlled in such a way
that they function as a unified whole.
Manufacturer
The manufacturer is an individual or legal entity bearing responsibility for the
design and manufacture of a product which is placed on the market in the in‐
dividual's or legal entity's name. The manufacturer can use finished products,
finished parts or finished elements, or contract out work to subcontractors.
However, the manufacturer must always have overall control and possess the
required authority to take responsibility for the product.
Product
Examples of a product: Device, component, part, system, software, firmware,
among other things.
Project Planning Manual
A project planning manual is part of the application documentation used to
support the sizing and planning of systems, machines or installations.
Qualified Persons
In terms of this application documentation, qualified persons are those persons
who are familiar with the installation, mounting, commissioning and operation
of the components of the electric drive and control system, as well as with the
hazards this implies, and who possess the qualifications their work requires. To
comply with these qualifications, it is necessary, among other things,

1) to be trained, instructed or authorized to switch electric circuits and devices
safely on and off, to ground them and to mark them
2) to be trained or instructed to maintain and use adequate safety equipment
3) to attend a course of instruction in first aid
User
A user is a person installing, commissioning or using a product which has been
placed on the market.
3.2
General Information
3.2.1
Using the Safety Instructions and Passing Them on to Others
Do not attempt to install and operate the components of the electric drive and
control system without first reading all documentation provided with the product.
Read and understand these safety instructions and all user documentation prior
to working with these components. If you do not have the user documentation
for the components, contact your responsible Bosch Rexroth sales partner. Ask
for these documents to be sent immediately to the person or persons respon‐
sible for the safe operation of the components.
If the component is resold, rented and/or passed on to others in any other form,
these safety instructions must be delivered with the component in the official
language of the user's country.
Improper use of these components, failure to follow the safety instructions in
this document or tampering with the product, including disabling of safety de‐
vices, could result in property damage, injury, electric shock or even death.
3.2.2
Requirements for Safe Use
Read the following instructions before initial commissioning of the components
of the electric drive and control system in order to eliminate the risk of injury
and/or property damage. You must follow these safety instructions.

Bosch Rexroth is not liable for damages resulting from failure to observe
the safety instructions.
●
Read the operating, maintenance and safety instructions in your language
before commissioning. If you find that you cannot completely understand
the application documentation in the available language, please ask your
supplier to clarify.
●
Proper and correct transport, storage, mounting and installation, as well
as care in operation and maintenance, are prerequisites for optimal and
safe operation of the component.
●
Only qualified persons may work with components of the electric drive and
control system or within its proximity.
●
Only use accessories and spare parts approved by Bosch Rexroth.
●
Follow the safety regulations and requirements of the country in which the
components of the electric drive and control system are operated.
●
Only use the components of the electric drive and control system in the
manner that is defined as appropriate. See chapter "Appropriate Use".
●
The ambient and operating conditions given in the available application
documentation must be observed.
●
Applications for functional safety are only allowed if clearly and explicitly
specified in the application documentation "Integrated Safety Technolo‐
gy". If this is not the case, they are excluded. Functional safety is a safety

on electrical, electronic or programmable control systems.

The information given in the application documentation with regard to the
use of the delivered components contains only examples of applications
and suggestions.
The machine and installation manufacturers must

make sure that the delivered components are suited for their individ‐
ual application and check the information given in this application
documentation with regard to the use of the components,
–
make sure that their individual application complies with the appli‐
cable safety regulations and standards and carry out the required
measures, modifications and complements.

Commissioning of the delivered components is only allowed once it is sure
that the machine or installation in which the components are installed
complies with the national regulations, safety specifications and standards
of the application.

Operation is only allowed if the national EMC regulations for the applica‐
tion are met.

The instructions for installation in accordance with EMC requirements can
be found in the section on EMC in the respective application documenta‐
tion.
The machine or installation manufacturer is responsible for compliance

3.3
Instructions with Regard to Specific Dangers
3.3.1
Protection Against Contact with Electrical Parts and Housings
This section concerns components of the electric drive and control
system with voltages of more than 50 volts.
Contact with parts conducting voltages above 50 volts can cause personal
danger and electric shock. When operating components of the electric drive
and control system, it is unavoidable that some parts of these components
conduct dangerous voltage.
High electrical voltage! Danger to life, risk of injury by electric shock or serious
injury!
●
Only qualified persons are allowed to operate, maintain and/or repair the
components of the electric drive and control system.
●
Follow the general installation and safety regulations when working on
power installations.
●
Before switching on, the equipment grounding conductor must have been
permanently connected to all electric components in accordance with the
connection diagram.
●
Even for brief measurements or tests, operation is only allowed if the
equipment grounding conductor has been permanently connected to the
points of the components provided for this purpose.
●
Before accessing electrical parts with voltage potentials higher than 50 V,
you must disconnect electric components from the mains or from the pow‐
er supply unit. Secure the electric component from reconnection.
●
With electric components, observe the following aspects:
Always wait 30 minutes after switching off power to allow live capacitors
to discharge before accessing an electric component. Measure the elec‐
trical voltage of live parts before beginning to work to make sure that the
equipment is safe to touch.
●
Install the covers and guards provided for this purpose before switching
on.
●
Never touch electrical connection points of the components while power
is turned on.
●
Do not remove or plug in connectors when the component has been pow‐
ered.
●
Under specific conditions, electric drive systems can be operated at mains
protected by residual-current-operated circuit-breakers sensitive to uni‐
versal current (RCDs/RCMs).
●
Secure built-in devices from penetrating foreign objects and water, as well
as from direct contact, by providing an external housing, for example a
control cabinet.

High housing voltage and high leakage current! Danger to life, risk of injury by
electric shock!

Before switching on and before commissioning, ground or connect the
components of the electric drive and control system to the equipment
grounding conductor at the grounding points.
●
Connect the equipment grounding conductor of the components of the
electric drive and control system permanently to the main power supply at
all times. The leakage current is greater than 3.5 mA.
●
Establish an equipment grounding connection with a copper wire of a
cross section of at least 10 mm2 (8 AWG) or additionally run a second
equipment grounding conductor of the same cross section as the original
equipment grounding conductor.
Protective Extra-Low Voltage as Protection Against Electric Shock
Protective extra-low voltage is used to allow connecting devices with basic in‐
sulation to extra-low voltage circuits.
On components of an electric drive and control system provided by Bosch
Rexroth, all connections and terminals with voltages between 5 and 50 volts
are PELV ("Protective Extra-Low Voltage") systems. It is allowed to connect
devices equipped with basic insulation (such as programming devices, PCs,
notebooks, display units) to these connections.
Danger to life, risk of injury by electric shock! High electrical voltage by incorrect
connection!
If extra-low voltage circuits of devices containing voltages and circuits of more
than 50 volts (e.g., the mains connection) are connected to Bosch Rexroth

Protection Against Dangerous Movements
Dangerous movements can be caused by faulty control of connected motors.
Some common examples are:

Improper or wrong wiring or cable connection
●
Operator errors
●
Wrong input of parameters before commissioning
●
Malfunction of sensors and encoders
●
Defective components
●
Software or firmware errors
These errors can occur immediately after equipment is switched on or even
after an unspecified time of trouble-free operation.
The monitoring functions in the components of the electric drive and control
system will normally be sufficient to avoid malfunction in the connected drives.
Regarding personal safety, especially the danger of injury and/or property dam‐
age, this alone cannot be relied upon to ensure complete safety. Until the
integrated monitoring functions become effective, it must be assumed in any
case that faulty drive movements will occur. The extent of faulty drive move‐
ments depends upon the type of control and the state of operation.

Dangerous movements! Danger to life, risk of injury, serious injury or property
damage!
A risk assessment must be prepared for the installation or machine, with its
specific conditions, in which the components of the electric drive and control
system are installed.
As a result of the risk assessment, the user must provide for monitoring func‐
tions and higher-level measures on the installation side for personal safety. The
safety regulations applicable to the installation or machine must be taken into
consideration. Unintended machine movements or other malfunctions are pos‐
sible if safety devices are disabled, bypassed or not activated.
To avoid accidents, injury and/or property damage:
●
Keep free and clear of the machine’s range of motion and moving machine
parts. Prevent personnel from accidentally entering the machine’s range
of motion by using, for example:
–
Safety fences
–
Safety guards
–
Protective coverings
–
Light barriers
●
Make sure the safety fences and protective coverings are strong enough
to resist maximum possible kinetic energy.
●
Mount emergency stopping switches in the immediate reach of the oper‐
ator. Before commissioning, verify that the emergency stopping equip‐
ment works. Do not operate the machine if the emergency stopping switch
is not working.
●
Prevent unintended start-up. Isolate the drive power connection by means
of OFF switches/OFF buttons or use a safe starting lockout.
●
Make sure that the drives are brought to safe standstill before accessing
or entering the danger zone.
●
Additionally secure vertical axes against falling or dropping after switching
off the motor power by, for example,
–
mechanically securing the vertical axes,
–
adding an external braking/arrester/clamping mechanism or
–
ensuring sufficient counterbalancing of the vertical axes.
●
The standard equipment motor holding brake or an external holding brake
controlled by the drive controller is not sufficient to guarantee personal
safety!
●
Disconnect electrical power to the components of the electric drive and
control system using the master switch and secure them from reconnec‐
tion ("lock out") for:

Maintenance and repair work
–
Cleaning of equipment
–
Long periods of discontinued equipment use
Prevent the operation of high-frequency, remote control and radio equip‐
ment near components of the electric drive and control system and their
supply leads. If the use of these devices cannot be avoided, check the
machine or installation, at initial commissioning of the electric drive and
control system, for possible malfunctions when operating such high-fre‐
quency, remote control and radio equipment in its possible positions of
normal use. It might possibly be necessary to perform a special electro‐
magnetic compatibility (EMC) test.

Protection Against Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields During Oper‐
ation and Mounting
Magnetic and electromagnetic fields generated by current-carrying conductors
or permanent magnets of electric motors represent a serious danger to persons
with heart pacemakers, metal implants and hearing aids.
Health hazard for persons with heart pacemakers, metal implants and hearing
aids in proximity to electric components!

Persons with heart pacemakers and metal implants are not allowed to
enter the following areas:
–
Areas in which components of the electric drive and control systems
are mounted, commissioned and operated.
–
Areas in which parts of motors with permanent magnets are stored,
repaired or mounted.
●
If it is necessary for somebody with a heart pacemaker to enter such an
area, a doctor must be consulted prior to doing so. The noise immunity of
implanted heart pacemakers differs so greatly that no general rules can
be given.
●
Those with metal implants or metal pieces, as well as with hearing aids,
must consult a doctor before they enter the areas described above.
Protection Against Contact With Hot Parts
Hot surfaces of components of the electric drive and control system. Risk of
burns!
3.3.6
●
Do not touch hot surfaces of, for example, braking resistors, heat sinks,
supply units and drive controllers, motors, windings and laminated cores!
●
According to the operating conditions, temperatures of the surfaces can
be higher than 60 °C (140 °F) during or after operation.
●
Before touching motors after having switched them off, let them cool down
for a sufficient period of time. Cooling down can require up to 140 mi‐
nutes! The time required for cooling down is approximately five times the
thermal time constant specified in the technical data.
●
After switching chokes, supply units and drive controllers off, wait 15 mi‐
nutes to allow them to cool down before touching them.
●
Wear safety gloves or do not work at hot surfaces.
●
For certain applications, and in accordance with the respective safety reg‐
ulations, the manufacturer of the machine or installation must take meas‐
ures to avoid injuries caused by burns in the final application. These
measures can be, for example: Warnings at the machine or installation,
guards (shieldings or barriers) or safety instructions in the application
documentation.
Protection During Handling and Mounting
Risk of injury by improper handling! Injury by crushing, shearing, cutting, hitting!

installed in the devices.

Only use the battery types specified for the product.
Environmental protection and disposal! The batteries contained in
the product are considered dangerous goods during land, air, and
sea transport (risk of explosion) in the sense of the legal regulations.
Dispose of used batteries separately from other waste. Observe the
national regulations of your country.

Protection Against Pressurized Systems
According to the information given in the Project Planning Manuals, motors and
components cooled with liquids and compressed air can be partially supplied
with externally fed, pressurized media, such as compressed air, hydraulics oil,
cooling liquids and cooling lubricants. Improper handling of the connected sup‐
ply systems, supply lines or connections can cause injuries or property damage.

machine. In this guideline, a machine is defined as a combination of the com‐
ponents or mechanisms combined with each other. The described products

As it is impossible to follow the continuing development of all materials (e. g.
lubricants in machine tools) which may interact with our controls and drives, it

Bosch Rexroth might occur.

Connection monitor
A standard monitor (female connector XVGA), a PS2 keyboard (female con‐
nector XKeyb.) and a PS2 mouse (female connector XMouse) can be also
connected with the VPB 40.1. Please observe that most of the standard mice
and keyboards are not suitable for the industrial environment and are very sus‐
ceptible to electromagnetic disturbances.
NOTICE
The VPB 40.1 control cabinet PC cannot be
operated if keyboard and mouse are connec‐
ted to the VPB 40.1 if a VDP display is used.
If a VDP is used, keyboard and mouse may only be connected to this display.
Don't use the keyboard and mouse interfaces at the VPB 40.1.

In the lower right part of the connector panel there are five LEDs to display the

VPB 40.1
A new motherboard is used for the the IndraControl devices VPB and VPP type
1 devices. Due to the new motherboard, serial RS232 components may not
function correctly. The reason for this is a change of Interrupt 10 and 11 of the
serial COM interfaces in the serial COM ports 3 and 4. For troubleshooting

The parallel interface normally runs in the standard mode SPP. The parallel
interface can be operated also in the EPP-Mode (Enhanced Parallel Port) or in
the ECP-Mode (Extended Capabilities Port) if adequate peripheral components
are available. The mode can be changed in the BIOS settings.

XUSB – serial interfaces for printer,

The devices feature two USB interfaces on the connector panel (XUSB1 and
XUSB2) and one in the device (on the carrier board).
NOTICE
A connected USB device does not function if
the current consumption exceeds 500 mA.
The maximum power consumption of the connected device must not exceed
500 mA per USB connector. If the load exceeds 500 mA, the internal current
monitoring is activated.

If a PS/2 mouse is not recognized by the system, the mouse must be activated
in the BIOS by switching from "Disabled" to "Autodetect". The operating system
will not recognize the plugging-in of an external mouse after completed startup,
because the mouse is initialized during the booting process.

The connected mouse must comply with the PS/2 standard. Normally, the BIOS

Maintenance and Installation
8.1
General Information
The VPB 40.1 are maintenance-free. However, some components are subject
to wear and must be replaced.
Maintenance
Include the following measures in the maintenance schedule:
●
At least once a year, check all plug and terminal connections of the com‐
ponents regarding proper tightness and possible damage. Check that
cables are not broken or crushed. Replace damaged parts immediately.
●
Check the fan at least once a year.
DANGER
Risk of injury by rotating fan impeller!
The fan impeller must not to be touched with the hands and must not come into
contact with other objects.
●
Ensure that the batteries of the VPB 40.1 are fully functional. Activate the
battery test of the UPS program, so that the battery pack is checked during
each restart.
Function compatibility for spare parts is ensured for at least five
years.
8.2
Hard Disk
The hard disk frame can be accessed by a flap. The hard disk can be replaced,
also including the installation frame.
WARNING
Data loss due to irregular or missing data back‐
up!
Backup all required application data as well as operating system settings on an
external data carrier!
WARNING
Damages on the VPB 40.1 due to electrostatic
discharges!
Comply with all ESD protective measures while working with modules and
components! Avoid electrostatic discharges!
NOTICE
Loss of data and resinstallation of the operat‐
ing system and application programs after a
hard disk exchange due to a missing or irreg‐
ular backup.
Backup the hard disk regularly.
The hard disk to be inserted must already have an installed oper‐
ating system, if no floppy disk drive is connected to the VPB 40.1.
In any case, it is recommended to have a completely installed op‐
erating system on the hard disk, to shorten the installation time!

1. All required user data as well as the operating system settings of your
system are to be stored either on an external storage medium or via the
network connection!
2. Switch off the supply voltage.
3. Wait until the power supply unit switches off automatically after the UPS
operation (the UPS LED on the connector panel of the VPB 40.1 flashes
red until the UPS switches off the power supply unit).
4. Now, unplug the battery cable (connector X19).
5. If required, unplug all connectors from the VPB 40.1.
6. Loosen the fastening screw of the installation frame on the top side of the
VPB 40.1, see fig. 8-1 "Position of installation frame and fastening
screw" on page 48. Lift the hard disk frame and after releasing the re‐
taining spring unplug the ribbon cable, with which the hard disk is con‐
nected to the main board. Now you can remove the installation frame with
the hard disk.

1. The new hard disk is shipped including the installation frame. As described
above, the new hard disk is always mounted with the installation frame in
reverse order.
NOTICE
Damage of hard disk due to improperly
connected or wrong hard disk cable.
Check the cable connections leading to the hard disk and the interface
connectors for tightness and verify, if the voltage supply is ready for use.

2. The new hard disk parameters are automatically identified by the system.
If the operating system does not boot automatically, the power supply is
to be interrupted for at least 10 seconds. A restart needs to be carried out
again.
3. After properly booting the PC the user data and the operating system set‐
tings for the normal mode have to be restored.
8.3
CMOS Battery
The battery used for buffering the RAM and the clock has a limited service life,
see also chapter 4.8 "Wear Parts" on page 23.
This lithium battery must not be changed by the user. The battery may only be
exchanged by the Bosch Rexroth Service (see chapter 12 "Service and Sup‐
port" on page 77) or by personnel trained and authorized by the Service.
WARNING
Warning: Battery safety. Risk of fire, explosion,
and burns.
Do not recharge, disassemble, crush, heat above 100°C (212°F) or incinerate.
Dispose of used battery promptly. Keep away from children!
8.4
Battery Pack
For the uninterruptible power supply of VPB 40.1 an external battery pack for
control cabinet mounting is available.
Connection battery pack
The battery pack is connected with the 2-pin male connector strip X19 situated
at the connector panel on the upper side of the PC box. For this, use an un‐
shielded cable with line cross-sections of at least 1.5 mm2. The cable length is
maximum 3.0 m.
Bosch Rexroth provides ready-made cables with a length of 1.0 m and 3.0 m,
see chapter 11.2.2 "Battery Pack and cables" on page 74.

To connect the external batteries proceed as follows:
1. Select a suitable position for mounting the battery in the control cabinet.
The battery pack should be mounted in a cool place in the control cabinet
because the surrounding air temperature directly influences the service
life of the battery. A required mounting position can be selected (see the
following figures).

DANGER
Ensure that the polarity of the battery is correct. In the case of a polarity reversal
of the battery a F10A (5x20) fuse is released on the power supply unit. Notes
on the replacement of the fuse are given in chapter 8.6 "Exchanging the
Fuses" on page 56.
1. Switch on the supply voltage for the VPB 40.1 again.
2. Observe the illuminated symbol "UPS" on the front panel of the connected
VDP:
●
UPS illuminated symbol off: Batteries already charged
●
UPS illuminated symbol flashes red: Batteries discharged
Wait approximately 5 hours until the batteries are charged and the
UPS symbol extinguishes.
NOTICE
Insufficient UPS protection for controlled shut‐
down of the PC during the charging time if the
new battery pack is not yet charged.
Therefore use charged batteries, if possible. The charging time of a 2.5 Ah
battery is approximately 5 hours.
Replacing the battery pack
The battery pack must be replaced in the following cases:
●
The battery test failed during system boot.
●
The number of charging cycles exceeds the value depending on the sur‐
rounding air temperature and specified in "Charging cycles" on page
53.
●
The red illuminated symbol "UPS" on the VDP front panel flashes longer
than eight hours.

WARNING
Data loss in the RAM during battery exchange
due to missing data backup!
Before replacing the battery backup important data because during battery ex‐
change a voltage loss is possible, which might cause data loss in the RAM.
Charging cycles
A charging cycle is determined by switching the PC power supply unit on and
off. As long as the operator terminal is connected to the supply system, a total
discharge of the battery pack is avoided.
The number of charging cycles of the battery pack and thus, its service life is
dependent on the surrounding air temperature, in which the battery pack is
used. Surrounding air temperature defines the temperature, in which the oper‐
ator terminal and the battery pack are situated, e. g. the internal temperature
of the control cabinet or in an operator panel housing.

The used batteries are recyclable and can be returned to Bosch
Rexroth after replacement. They must not be disposed in the stand‐
ard household refuse!
8.5
Extension Cards
8.5.1
General Information
For plugging extension cards slots for PCI and ISA bus are available. According
to the PC box type a maximum of four PCI cards and of one ISA board is pos‐
sible, see also chapter 4.1 "PC Box" on page 19. The maximum length allowed
for the cards is 180 mm.

part of the housing cover can now be removed.

WARNING
Destruction of an extension card or of the main
board caused by parallel equipment with PCI
and ISA card!
The combined PCI/ISA bus slot must not be equipped with a PCI card and an
ISA card at the same time!
If the card is equipped with a Plug and Play (PnP) function, it is automatically
recognized by the operating system and integrated in the system, provided that
there are no hardware conflicts (IRQ etc.) with other extension cards or con‐
nected devices.
There can be different causes if functions - based on the new card - are not
available after the system reboot:
●
The card is not properly seated in the PCI or ISA slot.
●
The driver software of the card is not installed or its installation is faulty.
●
IRQ (Interrupt) conflict with other PC hardware components.
●
The software of the card was not installed.
WARNING
Risk of destruction of the main board or the ISA
card caused by address conflicts (IRQ, mem‐
ory access, I/O address)!
Consider the specifications of the card manufacturer. It might be required to set
new configurations in the BIOS and in the operating system (e.g. Windows
Control Panel).

BIOS Settings
IRQ0 to IRQ6, IRQ8 to IRQ13 and IRQ15 are already assigned and
are not available for PCI and ISA extension cards anymore!
PCI slot
In the BIOS submenu "PnP/PCI Configurations", each PCI slot can be assigned
to an IRQ address. By specifying the IRQ address the priority is specified at the
same time.
If only PnP1) cards are used, the "AUTO" setting is to be kept.
8.6
Exchanging the Fuses
Several fuses are integrated in the VPB 40.1 devices. The two following figures
show their position. If a fuse has to be replaced, the new fuse must have the
values specified in fig. 8-13 "Fuses" on page 58. Furthermore, it must be ULcertified.

Lethal electric shock by live parts with more
than 50 V! Risk to damage the device due to

Before you open the control cabinet PC VPB 40.1 to replace a fuse, dis‐
connect it from the power supply (230 V or 24 V)!

9.1
Application Software of the Monitoring Functions
9.1.1
Temperature Monitoring
The surrounding air temperature of the VPB 40.1 must not exceed +45 °C. To
ensure operational reliability, the control cabinet PC features a temperature
monitoring that measures the internal housing temperature.
1. For temperatures > 50 °C in the housing a temperature warning is indica‐
ted:
●
via the red flashing LED on the front panel of the VDP or
●
via a message window displayed by the operating system. This mes‐
sage is also to be evaluated by all application programs, especially
by I/O processes.
The temperature warning can be disabled by the program UPS NT for
Windows (see chapter "UPS NT Program " on page 60).
2. For temperatures greater than 65 °C the system is always shut down and
switched off via the UPS logic (see chapter 9.1.2 "Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS)" on page 59). This applies for all VPB 40.1 housing var‐
iants.
DANGER
Uncontrolled machine movements!
Always ensure that temperatures remain within the non-critical range. In the
case of application-sensitive procedures, ensure that machine movements are
terminated in a controlled manner before the temperature monitoring function
switches off the VPB 40.1.
9.1.2
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
General Information
NOTICE
Malfunction of the UPS due to software not in‐
stalled or wrongly installed.
The uninterruptible power supply is only ready for operation, if the correspond‐
ing software is installed. If necessary, the UPS NT software can be installed
with the BRCVInstall installation software on the VPB 40.1. The software can
be accessed via a desktop icon.
Operating Principle of the UPS
In the event of a voltage breakdown or if the temperature exceeds 65 °C the
UPS logic of the VPB 40.1 power supply unit allows a safe operating system
shutdown by means of an battery pack.
In the event of a voltage breakdown > 20 ms, battery operation is activated
(provided that the battery pack is ready for use).

NOTICE
Possible damage of connected machines if the
VPB 40.1 is switched off after at least three
minutes by the UPS hardware in the event of
power failure and UPS operation.
The UPS logic of the VPB 40.1 power supply unit is designed for a safe shut‐
down of all application programs and the operating system. The UPS logic is
not designed to maintain the operation during a longer voltage loss!
DANGER
Uncontrolled machine movements or data loss
due to defective batteries.
If there are no batteries in the unit or if the batteries are defective or discharged,
the VPB 40.1 is RESET after a voltage breakdown > 20 ms!
Uncontrolled machine movements or a data loss can be caused.
Voltage Breakdown < 800 ms
If the duration of the voltage breakdown is below 800 ms, the power supply unit
switches automatically from battery mode to normal mode.
Voltage Breakdown between
800 ms and 60 s
If the voltage breakdown is > 800 ms, the operation system initiates a system
shutdown after a selectable time (delay time). This delay time shall be used to
close all active applications by the user or by special routines.
If the supply voltage is available again within 60 seconds, the UPS interrupts
the operating voltage for further 8 seconds. After that, the operating system is
rebooted.
Voltage breakdown > 60 s
If the voltage breakdown lasts longer than 60 seconds, the UPS switches off
the power supply unit.
Setting the Delay Time in the UPS NT additional software, see
chapter "UPS NT Program " on page 60.
UPS NT Program
The UPS NT program controls and monitors the integrated uninterruptible pow‐
er supply (UPS). Additionally, the program features the following functions:
●
Monitoring the system temperature in the device
●
Monitoring the function of the fans
●
Monitoring the internal operating voltages
●
Checking the charging status of the batteries, if required
●
Setting the COM interface for the keyboard controller
●
Setting the SIS interface mode
The communication between program and UPS occurs via the serial interface
COM4.
The program consists of two parts:
1. Control Panel Applet
2. Actual Windows NT service
In the event of votlage breakdown within a settable time (Delay Time: 60 sec‐
onds max.) the UPS program has the following tasks:
●
Sending a message to all active applications so that the user or special
application routines can close them.
●
Shutdown the operating system after the expiration of the Delay Time.

Once the voltage monitoring has been activated, the system shutdown cannot
be stopped anymore.
Closing all active applications prevents data loss in the event of an unexpected
voltage breakdown. After a maximum of 60 seconds the UPS switches off the
PC power supply unit, if the supply voltage has not been restored, see chapter
"Operating Principle of the UPS" on page 59.
During normal operation the user cannot access the UPS NT program. The
program can be operated and set only with special rights and after a restart of
the operating system.
NOTICE
Possible damages to connected machines if a
shutdown of the VPB 40.1 is caused by wrong
UPS NT parameters.
Parameters set in UPS NT may be only changed after consulting Bosch
Rexroth.
UPS NT - Operation and Configuration
NOTICE
No operation possible due to missing adminis‐
trator rights.
Administrator rights are necessary for operation!
Start/Stop
The UPS NT program starts automatically while Windows XP is booted.
If the service shall be stopped, terminated or restarted (e.g. because of a rein‐
stallation or update), select the service manager in the Windows Control Panel.

parameter modifications.
To activate parameter modifications the UPS program is automatically stopped
and restarted During this time (approx. 5 to 10 seconds) there is no monitoring.
COM Port:
In this group the serial communication interface is selected to which the UPS
is connected. If one or more serial interfaces are deactivated in the BIOS, Win‐
dows NT "numbers" the remaining interfaces. Therefore, a new interface has
to be selected in the configuration dialog under COM port. If no interface is
found during the start of the service, a corresponding dialog box opens and the
service is terminated.
The following settings can be made in the Advanced Controls group:
Shutdown Delay Time:
In this field a delay time for the shutdown from 0 to 45 seconds is defined. This
is the time the user has to backup his data. After the expiration of the delay time
all application programs are terminated without a prompt!
When defining the Shutdown Delay Time, observe that between the end of the
Shutdown Delay Time and the expiration of the 60 seconds after the power
down signal remains enough time to shut down the operating system (for clos‐
ing the Windows system files and generating backups). If the time is too short,
the shutdown process is interrupted, because the UPS interrupts the voltage of
the power supply unit. This can cause data loss.
NOTICE
Data loss of of not saved data of opened ap‐

Once the Shutdown Delay Time has been expired, the operating system is
shutdown without a prompt.
Enable Startup Battery Test:
If the Enable Startup Battery Test checkbox is activated, the battery pack is
checked during each restart. In error case an error dialog is generated and a
message is sent to the whole system. The UPS program is still running.
After 12 hours the battery test is automatically repeated:
●
If no further error occurs, the battery test is automatically repeated every
12 hours.
●
If an error occurs, an error dialog is generated, a message is sent to the
whole system and the UPS program is terminated.
Enable Temp Control:
If this checkbox is activated, the surrounding air temperature is monitored con‐
tinuously. If +50 °C are exceeded, a warning window is displayed and on the
device front the LED "Temp" flashes. The temperature warning can be switched
off.
For temperatures greater than +65 °C the system is always shut down and
switched off via the UPS logic.
The voltage monitoring is still active after a temperature warning.

If this check box is activated, the existing housing fans and CPU fans are moni‐
tored. In error case a corresponding message is indicated and is sent to the
whole system.
Enable Voltage Control:
If this checkbox is activated, the internal supply voltages are monitored. In error
case a corresponding message is indicated and is sent to the whole system.
No Powerdown on Shortbreak:
If this checkbox is activated, interruptions of the supply voltage up to 5 seconds
are permissible without influencing the operation. Only for voltage breakdowns
> 5 seconds the UPS logic is started and the shutdown of the system is initiated.
UPS Off, Disable UPS:
The function UPS Off, Disable UPS deactivates the UPS monitoring and the
delay, when the power supply unit is switched off:
●
If a voltage breakdown occurs, the PC switches immediately off.
●
After a conventional shutdown of the system, there is no waiting time of
approximately 60 seconds until the power supply unit switches off.
This function shortens the waiting time during commissioning and software in‐
stallation. However, this checkbox must not be activated in the normal mode!
CAUTION
Data loss if voltage loss occurs during activa‐
ted "UPS Off, Disable UPS" checkbox! Dam‐
ages to connected machines and to VPB
40.1 are possible if the VPB 40.1 switches off
immediately while the "UPS OFF" checkbox is
activated.
If this checkbox is activated, a proper system shutdown is no longer possible
during a voltage breakdown. The device switches off immediately! Therefore,
this checkbox must not be activated during normal operation!
Command
In the Command group an executable program (*.exe; *.bat) can be entered
and activated, which should be started and executed after the initialization of
the shutdown. This is always reasonable, if applications which do not respond
to the system messages, have to be backuped or stopped. For this, corre‐
sponding clearing and terminating programs can be entered and activated. If
several programs are to be executed or if the programs feature transfer pa‐
rameters, they have to be combined and entered in a batch file.
NOTICE
Possible malfunctions if request parameters
are transmitted.
The entry must not contain any request parameters and the specified program
must not start any shutdown!
Default
If the Default button is activated, all settings are reset to their Default values.
These default values are:

The value of the battery voltage (Battery Voltage) is only updated after a battery
test. The battery test occurs automatically after a system start and then every
12 hours or after having pressed the Test Battery button.

The LED flashes red, if the value of the battery voltage, which was meas‐
ured under load, is too low.
●
The LED flashes green, if the battery pack is ready for operation.
NOTICE
Possible damages to the VPB 40.1 and the
connected machines if the UPS functionality is
not guaranteed anymore caused by excessive
battery tests.
Excessive battery tests discharge the battery pack. Do not perform more than
five battery tests within a 24 hour period.

The UPS service is stopped. All changes will only be effective, when
the PC is restarted (switch off and switch on the supply voltage
again).
About
The Shutdown Count value indicated in the About tab indicates, how often the
UPS has already shut down the system. A battery change is recommended
after more than 3000 forced shutdowns by the UPS, but not later than the rec‐
ommended maintenance interval, see "Battery" on page 23.

Touch Screen Software
For certain VDP-type displays a touch screen is integrated, that allows the op‐
eration via the touch-sensitive surface of the display.
To ensure the communication of the touch screen controller with the PC, the
serial interface XCOM2 inside the device is used. Therefore, the XCOM2 in‐
terface must not be used on these devices.
The required driver software is to be installed by means of the installation soft‐
ware "BRCVInstall", which is archived on the desktop.
After the installation settings and changes in the application Pointer Devices in
the Windows control panel are possible. The setup program can also be
reached via Start ▶ Programs ▶ UPDD ▶ Settings

For further information, click on the Help button on the corresponding tab.
Using Start ▶ Programs ▶ UPDD (see chapter 9.2 "Touch Screen Software"
on page 68) further programs, e.g. Test or Calibrate can be called, if necessary.
The program Calibrate might be of special interest. If required, the touch mouse
can be calibrated with the help of this program. For this, touch, one after the
other, the middle of the four crosses displayed on the screen.
The online help provides further information on these programs. The online help
can be started with the "GENER-EN.CHM" file, which is also filed in the D:
\Programs\UPDD\ folder.

Packaging
The packaging materials consist of cardboard, wood and polystyrene. These
materials can be recycled anywhere without any problem.
For ecological reasons, please refrain from returning the empty packages to
us.
Batteries and Accumulators
Batteries and accumulators can be labeled with this symbol.
The symbol indicating "separate collection" for all batteries and accu‐
mulators is the crossed-out wheeled bin.
The end user within the EU is legally obligated to return used batteries. Outside
the validity of the EU Directive 2006/66/EC keep the stipulated directives.
Used batteries can contain hazardous substances, which can harm the envi‐
ronment or the people´s health when they are improper stored or disposed of.
After use, the batteries or accumulators contained in Rexroth products have to
be properly disposed of according to the country-specific collection.
Recycling
Most of the products can be recycled due to their high content of metal. In order
to recycle the metal in the best possible way, the products must be disassem‐
bled into individual modules.

Environmental Protection and Disposal
Metals contained in electric and electronic modules can also be recycled by
means of special separation processes.
Products made of plastics can contain flame retardants. These plastic parts are
labeled according to EN ISO 1043. They have to be recycled separately or
disposed of according to the valid legal requirements.
