1. Introduction

The D-Note Series of digital note recorder has built-in memory that allows you to instantly capture notes or diagrams written in ink on normal paper without connecting into your computer, and then transfer a digital data into a computer for viewing, editing, or sharing by email on Windows platform. When the D-Note connects into a computer, it is able to use like a tablet.

1.1 Possible applications

D-Note can be deployed in any situations where both a paper hardcopy and a digitized soft copy are required, such as minutes taking, lecture notes taking or business presentation. The artist and writer are able to do their jobs any time when good idea coming out.

2. Knowledge about D-Note

DNA401

Hand writing area

One can write and record notes or drawings in the writing area of the

DNA401 digital recorder. The maximum area is 8.3" x 10.3" (210 x

263mm).

Thickness of the paper pad

The DLA401 supports standard A4 paper pads with a maximum thickness of 0.2”~0.3” (5~7mm).

DNA500

Handwriting area

One can write and record notes or drawings in the writing area of

DNA500 digital recorder. The maximum area is 5.9" x 8.3" (150 x

210mm).

Thickness of the paper pad

The DNA500 supports standard A5 paper pads with a maximum thickness of 0.6” (15mm).

2.1 Installation of the batteries

DNA500 DLA401

Turn off the power before changing the batteries or the memory data could come out with errors.

WARNING! When the battery installed in a wrong way, will leak out the liquid from the battery.

Do not mix together with different brands or used batteries.

Please take out the batteries if not using for more than 30 days.

Four AAA alkaline batteries can be used approximate 100 hours continuously. Battery life varies based on different brand.

2.2 Installation of the ink pen battery

Open the bottom of digital pen’s lid and take out the mercury battery from packing bag, then install a new one with the negative (-) pole facing the pen tip. Screw both barrel parts up until tight.

Incorrect battery installation will result in the malfunction of the digital ink pen.

Important:Remove cover label before inserting the pen battery.

In case to lose the digital pen, please put them into the D-Note’s trough.

2.3 Setup the Notepad and recorder

Attach the paper notepad on D-Note pad standard and the maximum size is:

DLA401 210mm x 263mm (A4/Letter)

DNA500 150mm x 210mm (A5)

Please do not exceed the size of Digital recorder and exert great efforts to tear the papers.

2.4 Store Device

The built-in 32MB FLASH memory is able to save the handwritten notepads as digital one (*.DNT).

Please do not save the files from computer into digital D-Note’s memory, or the data in D-Note will be damaged or lost.

3. D-Note Operation Guide

3.1 Front panel button

The LCD display

For recognizing the text on the LCD screen easily, the two decimal digits of the page counter are enlarged in the center of the screen, whereas the hundreds (0-1) are displayed behind the hyphen in the top row of the display.

Although the D-Note theoretically has the ability to manage up to

99 workbooks of 199 digital pages each, such ability is limited to the maximum storage capacity of the built-in flash memory in practically. Therefore the DNA500 has a storage capacity of

32MB, which is about 150 digital pages, and DLA401 is about 75 pages.

3.2 Power Button

1. Enable the Digital note recorder

In order to start the Digital note recorder, press the button of

POWER about 3 seconds, the LCD shows on (as right picture).

2. MENU Functions

Press the button of , and select the menu functions.(Please refer the section 3.6 -- Menu functions)

3. Disable the Digital note Recorder

In order to shut down the Digital note recorder, press the button of POWER about 3 seconds, the LCD shows off (as right picture).

3.3 Build up and store a new page

It is strongly recommended to number down the sheets on your notepad and copy the workbook and page number on the LCD display each time when you turn over a sheet. This will help to synchronize the paper sheets with the workbooks and digital pages in the D-Note’s memory.

STEP-1 Press to create a new page.

To avoid the creation of superimposed digital pages, make sure that the page status indicator on the LCD screen displays an empty page before you start writing on a new page.

Before creating new page or selecting the old one, waiting for or comes out for recording data.

The size of the files is depending on how much the handwritten data you have.

3.4 Modify notes

Whenever, you can turn the page you wish to go that you have written and saved before.

Press the Page Up button or   and make corrections or additional notes on empty space.

You may browse several sheets at a time to check earlier notes.

However, if you want to make additions on a particular sheet, you must turn the page by repeatedly pressing the Page Up or Down buttons until the page counter indicates the same number as the one you have marked on the sheet itself.

3.5 Delete pages

Method -- Pressing the Delete button that equals tearing off or crossing out a paper sheet of the notepad.

Press / YES Confirm

Method -- Use the software function to delete pages on Windows:

After connecting your D-Note into a computer, then open the pages folder by using Digital Organizer (Install method, see the CH 4.1).

Checking the D-Note data and selecting the pages you wish to delete.

In addition, you can remember and delete pages faster by put a mark

“-“in the head of file name.

3.6 MENU functions

STEP-1 Turn on the power by pressing and get in the functions of menu.

Main menu shows up and wait for the information function

Accessing the menu functions, such as rotate, book, suspend or information.

Rotate This menu allows you to adjust the paper orientation from portrait to landscape or upside down.

Book Workbook: Start a new workbook. (A new meeting, or lecture)

Format disk: Use this option to format the flash memory and erase all of its content.

Version: Display the current firmware version.

Tablet Function Selection: User can switch on or off

Tablet function by this option.

Suspend Set up the timing for automatically power off

3.6.1 Change the paper orientation

D-Note is designed for different level and way of using, there are four directions are able to select by user.

The function only supports a new page, not a written one.

STEP-1 Press Uand select for different direction.

STEP-2 Press function. to confirm and start the rotating

STEP-3 Press△to select the direction. LCD changes the angles as following:

3.6.2 Book Settings

3.6.2.1 Set the number of notepad

The function is designed for user who own several notepads and would like to have original notebook with multi-numbers to record and trace up all digital notes.

( When changing the notepad, please transfer the data into your computer to avoid data lost.

STEP-1 Select the workbook sub-menu.

STEP-2 Press to confirm the action, then start the setting of notepad.

STEP-3 Select and press to confirm the action,then start to set the workbook number.

STEP-4 Press △(decrease number) or ▽(increase number), to select the workbook number you want.

STEP-5 Press to confirm and return to the main menu.

3.6.2.2 FORMAT

The function will delete all the data in the memory. If not sure the data are available or not, please back it up and save it into your computer, or you can select single page deleted.

The Format order built in the D-Note and it works more efficient to manage your files.

STEP-1 Press△to select the workbook sub-menu.

STEP-2 Press to confirm.

STEP-3 Press▽to select the Format Disk command and press to confirm the action.

STEP-4 Press to confirm the operation. After finish this function, D-Note would auto-turn off.

Press to cancel and return to main menu.

3.6.2.3 VERSION Information

STEP-1 Press▽ to select the workbook sub-menu.

STEP-2 Press [ENTER] to confirm.

STEP-3 Press ▽ to select the Version Information command and press to confirm.

STEP-4 User can see the version information on LCD monitor. After 5 seconds, it will return to note taking mode.

3.6.2.4 Tablet Function

STEP-1 Press ▽ to select the workbook sub-menu.

STEP-2 Press [ENTER] to confirm.

STEP-3 Press ▽ to select the Tablet command, and then press to confirm.

STEP-4 When the D-Note connect into a PC, Press to open the tablet function (default) or select to close it, and then press to confirm the operation

3.6.3 Auto Suspend-Timer ( 3 minutes--- 60 minutes)

STEP-1 Press ▽ to select the suspending sub-menu.

STEP-2 Press [ENTER] to confirm. The default idle time is 15 minutes.

STEP-3 Press △ or ▽ to increase or decrease the idle time (from 3

~ 60 minutes) after which the D-Note will automatically switch off.

STEP-4 Press to confirm and return to the main menu.

3.6.4 Space/Power Display

STEP-1 Press ▽ to select the status menu.

STEP-2 Press [ENTER] to confirm.

Remaining disk space in %.

Remaining battery capacity in %.

3.7 Testing for Digital Ink Pen

Firstly, pick up the digital pen (make sure the mercury battery install properly) and try to write anything on the D-Note’s working area (LCD will display ),that means the pen is working fine. (if detect the pen around the working area but no writing action, then LCD will display ).

If the LCD displays the icon or , the digital pen is working fine.

If no icon displays, that means the pen has no action. (Even though you still write by using a normal pen, no record or action will be saved as computer files.)

Be careful if no icon appeared when you are in writing action.

If not, please check the battery run out or not install properly.

4. Introduction to Software Functions

The Digital Organizer lets you view, edit, annotate, or e-you’re your digital pages in Windows. You can download the digital pages from the

D-Note’s built in memory to your computer, and organize, rename, delete, or save them in most frequently used file formats like JPG,

BMP, or PDF.

4.1 Installing the Digital Organizer software

1. Turn on your computer and start Windows

2. Insert the Digital Organizer CD into the CD-ROM drive. If your system has the “Autorun” function enabled, your screen will display the setup screen menu. If the setup screen did not appear after a while, double click My computer on the Windows desktop, and then the Compact Disc icon and the Setup icon in succession.

3. Confirm the location of the destination folder (recommended) and click [OK].

4. To proceed with the installation, click [OK], wait until the installation is completed, and click [OK] again.

4.2 Transfer your data from D-Note to your computer

1. Using USB cable to connect your D-Note and computer. Make sure your computer is power on and plug the mini connector into your

D-Note and plug the big connector into an available USB port on your computer.

2. The LCD display will show a USB connector diagram to confirm that you have successfully established a USB connection between the D-Note and your PC, and that the D-Note is in pen tablet mode (see section 4.4).

Do not use the 32MB flash memory of the D-Note as a storage disk, or memory errors may occur!

When using Digital Organizer, please close the other software to avoid the software conflict.

When the D-Note connecting with computer, it won’t use battery power but will receive its power from the computer.

4.3 Importing digital pages

1. After you plug in the USB connector to your PC, “Note Notifier” screen will comes automatically. Press [OK] to confirm.

2. Use the dialog window to select [Copy File(s)] or [Moving File(s)].

3. After confirming the action, it displays the transferring status.

4. When the files transfer finished, you can find a new folder named

“Note Files” in My Document folder.

4.4 Using the D-Note as Tablet

As soon as you have established a USB connection between your PC and D-Note, you can have the function of tablet. You can use the digital ink pen as an input device that working as the same way as the pen tablet, mouse or a tablet PC.

You must turn the D-Note as the same direction connector showing on LCD display. as USB

According to different usage and personal habit, DNA500 /DLA401 could be turn into 4 directions.

Avoid direct contact between the pen tip and the writing area surface. Cover the writing area with a sheet of paper, or just use an empty page of your notepad when using the D-Note in pen tablet mode. This will avoid scratches or ink traces on the D-Note’s surface.

4.5 Introduction to Digital Organizer

To start the program in Windows 2000 (or XP), double click on the

D-Note icon on the Windows desktop. Alternatively, click [Start] ►

[Programs] ► [D-Note ] ► [D-Note icon ]. The Digital Organizer’s main window will appear on your screen:

4.6 The standard Toolbars

New

Create a new D-Note digital page.

Open

Open an existing D-Note file. Use the dialog to locate the file in the D-Note flash memory, or on your hard disk.

Save

Save the currently selected digital page. The page will be saved as PDF, JPG, BMP, Notes or DNT.

Save as

Save the currently selected digital page in another file name or file format. (e.g. .dnt, .jpg, .bmp, .pdf, .notes, etc.)

Two file models supplied with JPG or BMP.

New folder

In D-Note Explorer, click on a new folder and key in an appropriate folder name and press [Enter].

Rename

Click on the Rename icon and key in the new name in the thumbnail’s caption.

Delete -- Click on the Delete icon to delete the selected digital page(s). Click [OK] to confirm, or [Cancel] to abort this action.

E-MAIL :

You can attach one, many or all pages and send email with JPG or PDF file model.

Please follow the steps as show below:

1. After clicking on the

E-Mail icon your selection will appear in the Attach

file(s) dialog box .

2. Hold down the Shift-key and move the cursor to the right to select consecutive pages.

3. Hold down the

Ctrl-key and click on individual file names to select non-consecutive pages.

4. Click the [Add File…] button to add in the files.

Click on the [Move up] or [Move down] buttons to change the order of the pages. In the drop down menu, select whether you want to attach the pages as JPG files or a PDF file.

5. Click on the [Attach] button in the dialog box to finalize the operation.

Your e-mail program will open and your pages will be attached as a series of JPG or BMP files.

Save as PDF

You can select one, many or all pages to transfer and save as

PDF file format.

Please follow the steps as showing below:

1. New

Create a new D-Note digital page.

2. Select Files

(1) Select All--Hold down the Shift-key and move the cursor to the right to select consecutive pages.

(2) Single select--Hold down the Ctrl-key and click on individual file names to select non-consecutive pages.

(3) Select stored names--Select the digital pages(s) you wish to save as a multi-page PDF file.

(4) Save Location--Save location is able to open under the file folder.

(5) Select Directory--Under directories and open the file name.

(6) Select saved model--You can select JPG, BMP or PDF to transfer files.

Print

Print the currently selected digital page.

Cut

Cut the selected strokes or objects in the Notepad pane and attach to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook or other pages.

Copy

Copy the selected strokes or objects in the Notepad pane and attach to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook or other pages.

Paste

Paste the selected strokes or objects in the Notepad pane and attach to Microsoft Word, Excel Outlook or other pages.

Undo

Undo the last action.

Redo

Redo the last action.

Narrow

Narrow down the page.

Enlarge

Enlarge the zoom page.

Click on the down arrow in the Zoom drop down menu and select the zoom factor.

free support MyScript Notes For U software 30days trial version with 17 Languages available. For full version or more languages requested, please contact with your retailers or distributors.

For Windows 2000 and XP users, after the software installation, please run the MyScript Notes For U, and then run Digital Organizer program before using the function.

(You only need to follow these steps for the first time usage.

You can run the Digital Organizer directly afterward.)

For Windows Vista users, after the software installation, please point the software short cut and press right button of mouse, choose

“Run as administrator”, run the MyScript Notes

Click on the About icon to check for the latest software updates of the Digital Organizer program and able to link to the web site.

4.7 The Digital Page Toolbar

Untangle Superimposed Pages

A commonly mistake made by users is to forget pressing the

Newpage front panel button each and every time they turn a paper sheet on the notepad to start a new digital page in memory.

Click on the Untangle icon to open a dialog box consisting of two pages: The top page will present the earlier recorded page. The bottom page will show the notes and diagrams of the superimposed page.

Store pages

Save the pages after Untangling.

Combine files

If user would like to combine two pages together, please select files and add in another one. ☆ Delete source file: After combined two files, the source file will be deleted or you can remove the function.

After files combination, move and locate the position and attach it.

Rotating Pages

Rotate the currently selected page clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Clockwise 90°.

Clockwise 180°.

Counterclockwise 90°.

Page Up Move to last page

Page Down Move to next page

Digital Pen

D-Note has three colors of digital pens. By default: black is number one, blue is number two and red is number three. To change the pen shape and color, please follow the steps as showing below:

When you modify the digital pen’s property, the original record will be change the new setting.

STEP-1 Select pen number

(Pen number 1 is Black)

(Pen number 2 is Blue)

(Pen number 3 is Red)

STEP-2 Select the shape of pen tip.

4.8 Drawing Toolbars – Support Tablet Function

Scroll Tool

Moving the whole page by scrolling it.

Pen

Select the Pen icon to annotate the Notepad pane with the pen tool. There are 4 different shapes (curve、line、ellipse、rectangle) to select.

Highlighter

Select the Highlighter icon to highlight parts of the Notepad pane with transparent highlighter ink. There are 4 different shapes

(curve line、ellipse、rectangle) to select.

Eraser Stroke

Select the Erase stroke icon to clear pen strokes or objects one by one by moving the eraser cursor over the stroke(s) you want to delete. There are 4 different areas to select

You can directly copy and paste your selection in Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook for further processing or sending by e-mail.

Select Font

Able to change the Font, Font size, style, color, or effects.

Mode Select

Actual paper size and monitor size select. You can adjust the electrical data on the computer screen. (D-Note paper and monitor size are 1:1)

After connecting the D-Note into computer, select the modify page, and then start the paper mode. After that, locate the notepad’s direction to confirm the open direction.

Reset: Reset the notepad’s direction.

Turn the notepad page same as the page on Digital Organizer’s one, then you can start to write or draw on it.

Actual D-Note paper size and Digital Organizer size will be the same.

You can adjust the electrical data on the computer screen. (Paper and monitor size are 1:1)

Exit Mode Select: Press Ctrl + T key to cancel the Mode Select.

Styles of handwriting can be displayed in round shape, square shape and various marker pen shapes, and in 6 sizes, which can be combined to produce different creative drawing me

4.8.1 Modify the color and shape

STEP-1

Selecting the objects you want to modify with the Select tool .

The selection will appear in a selection box. You can now change pen tip colors and shapes, and click the [OK] button to confirm.

4.9 Insert Background Colors

You can insert the pictures, colors, and line template into your files of handwriting.

4.9.1 Normal model

4.9.1.1 Insert Background Picture

STEP-1 Start with selecting the

[Background Picture] under

[Insert] on the view menu.

(Support JPG and BMP)

STEP-2 Select picture source, and then the picture appears on the notepad page. Lighten: Adjust the picture of transparency.

STEP-3 When the dialog windows come out, select the background picture and location (Center, Tile, Stretch), click “ok” to confirm.

☆ After inserting the background picture, it is stacked on the background colors and could not see it.

Able to select the line Vertical, Horizontal, Separation,

Spacing or Colors.

6. Take Care of your D-Note

To assure proper functioning of the D-Note, please observe the following precautions: z Remove the batteries from the D-Note if it is not expected to be used form long periods. This will eliminate the possibility of battery liquid leaking from the batteries and corroding internal components. z Remove expected to be used for long periods. z Avoid placing magnetic media or hot or heavy items on the surface of the D-Note. z Clean the pen and the housing of with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water or a neutral detergent. z Never drop the digital pen or the note recorder. The D-Note may malfunction if subjected to strong shocks or vibration. z Avoid cutting or scratching the surface of the D-Note. z Never immerse the pen or digital not recorder in liquid. z Avoid operating or storing the pen and the recorder in extremely hot or cold temperatures, or where the relative humidity is high. z Never take the D-Note or pen apart as this will void warranty.

Leave service of the device to qualified technicians z Do not use or store the D-Note in the vicinity of equipment that generates strong electromagnetic radiation or magnetic fields. z When not in use, please put back on the pen point cap to save energy mode. Otherwise, avoid to frequency influenced.

Q & A, Troubleshooting

A superimposed digital page is created.

Make sure to press the New button on the front panel every time when you turn a paper sheet on the notepad to start a new digital page, and make sure that the Page icon on the LCD monitor shows an empty page .

Note: You can repair superimposed pages with the Untangle function

(see section 4.7).

The problems of D-Note or Digital Ink Pen.

1. The batteries in the D-Note may have run out of power during a note taking session. Please replace the batteries (see section 2.1 for instructions).

2. The battery in the digital pen may have run out of power during a note taking session. Please check if the pen icon on the LCD display is either white or black (see also section 3.2) in note taking mode to ensure the digital pen is working.

3. Please check if the battery cover is properly closed in note taking mode.

4. You may have put the notepads thicker than the maximum thickness. This will be caused the digital pen tip to move outside of the reading height range of the D-Note. Please check if the pen icon on the LCD display is either white or black (see also section

3.7) in note taking mode to ensure a proper reading height distance.

5. After you have switched on the device, it may take a few seconds for the page icon or to appear on the LCD display. Please wait for the D-Note to properly start up.

6. You may set the auto-suspend timer too short. (See section 3.6.3.).

Please increase the auto-suspend time.

7. Do not use two pens at the same time, or place one pen on the notepad while writing with another one.

8. D-Note has not connected to PC yet.

D-Note cannot power on

1. The batteries in the D-Note may have run out of power during a note taking session. Please replace the batteries (see section 2.1 for instructions).

2. D-Note is connecting into computer, which means the D-Note changed to the Tablet function

The Page counter has not yet reached 199, but the memory is full.

Although the D-Note theoretically has the ability to manage up to 99 workbooks of 199 digital pages each, such ability is limited to the maximum storage capacity of the built-in flash memory. In practically, the D-Note has a storage capacity of 32MB, but DNA500 only store about 150 digital pages, and DLA401 can save about 75 pages.

Therefore, you can store pages into computer, and then format

D-Note and clear memory or writing more new pages.

Appendix

Replacing the ink cartridge of the digital pen

Open the compartment of the D-Note underneath by lifting its cover.

1. Hold the digital pen upright and insert the pen tip into the center of the notch.

2. Gently push the pen inside the notch.

3. Gently pull out the ink cartridge from the pen.

4. Insert a new cartridge and press the tip firmly against a hard surface until it connects into the pen.
