the trimmer head.

approached.
Always keep the engine on the fight-hand

I. TUBE

end of the tube if so equipped.
Make sure the drive shaft does not fall out
of the tube. Dirt on the shaft will significantly reduce the life of the tool. If the drive sha_ falls out

c., it might be necessary to loosen the throttle grip screws.
c. Insert the tube through the throttle grip as
shown in Figure 1.
d. Align the groove on the tube with the ridge on
the inner, lower wall of the nose cone opening.

e. Firmly push the tube into the nose cone opening until the bold Rue on the decal is not visible. Make sure the drive shaft is eng_ed by
pulling the starter rope; if the arbor shaft does
not turn, reinstall the tube in the nose cone.
fi Tighten the nose cone screws until secure.
g. Slide the throttle grip toward the engine until
it contacts the nose cone. Then, tighten the
throttle grip screws until secure.

Although a screwdriver
slot is provided in screws "B. ", it is easier to install the
screws with a wrench or socket.
NOTE: It is possible that a small space will be
left between the bracket and the shield when
the screws are fi_y tightened.
5. OPERATING
POSITION
a. Before starting the engine, stand as shown in
Figure 5 and check for the following:
1. Left arm fully extended_ hand holding assist
handle.
2. Right arm slightly bent, hand holding throttle
grip,fingerson throttle
trigger.
3. Engine below waistlevel
4. Weight of tool evenly distributedbetween

5. Without operatorbending over,the trimmer
head isnearand parallel
totheground andeasilycontacts the material to be cur.
When adjustingthe
assist handle for
comfort, be sure that the assist handle remains
between
the trigger housing and the safety label. Figure 2.
b. Adjust assist handle up or down the tube (but
above the safety labels) to a comfortable position.
e. Rotate assist handle from left to right to tilt the
s_ngle of the trimmer head when cutting a large,
oped area such as a ditch bank.

CRAFTSMAN
40:1 2 cycleoilisstronglyrecommended.
This oilis specially
blended with fuelstabilizers
for
increased fuel stability (extends fuel life up to 5 times
longer) and reduced smoke.
If CRAFTSMAN 2 cycle oil is not available, use a good
quality 2 cycle AIR-COOLED
engine oil that has a
recommended fuel mix 40:1.

The two-cycle engine on this product requires a fuel mixture of regular unleaded gasoline and a high quality engine oil for lubrication
of the bearings and othermoving
parts.The correctfuel!oil
mixture is40:1 (seeFuel Mixture Chart). Too 1ittte oil or the incorrect
oil type will
cause poor performance and maycausethe
engine to overheat and seize.
GASOLINE
Gasolineand oilmust be premixedin a cleanapprovedfuel
container.
Always use freshregularunleadedgasoline.
Mix gasoline and oil as follows:
IMPORTANT:.
Experience
indicates
that alcohol
blended fuels called gasohol (or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture, which leads to oil/gas separation and formationof acidsduring storage.Acidic
gascan damage the fuelsystem ofan enginewhile in
storage.To avoid engine problems, the fuelsystem
shouldbe emptiedbeforestoragefor30 daysor longer.
Drainthegastank,then run thefuelout ofthecarburetorand fuellinesby startingthe engine and letting
it
run untilitstops. Use fresh fuelnext season. See
STORAGE
instructions
for additionalinformation.
Never useengineor carburetorcleanerproductsinthe
fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

These oils do not have proper additives for 2-cycle,

engines and can cause engine damage.

Pour 3.2 ounces of ldgh quality, 2-cycie engine oll
into an empty, approved one gallon gasoline container,

Shake the containermomentarily.

The mixture isnow ready foruse. Fuel stabilizer
can be added at thistime ifdesired;
followmixing
instructions
on the label.
STABILIZER
Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative
in minimizing
the formationof fuelgum depositsduring storage.Add
stabilizer
to gasolinein fueltank or storagecontainer.
Always followthe fuelmix ratiofound on the stabRizer
container.
Run engine at leastI0 minutes afteradding
stabilizer
to allowthe stabilizer
to reach thecarburetor.
Youdo nothave todrainthefueltank forstorageifyouare
using fuelstabilizer.
CRAFTSMAN 40:1 2 cycle engine oil is specially blended
with fuel stabilizers. If you do not use this Sears oil, you
can add a fuel stabilizer (such as CraRsman No. 33500) to
your fuel tank.

more than 5 pulls.
• Allow the engine to run 15 seconds, then move the
choke lever to "Off Choke.

If engine has not started, pull starter rope 5
more pulls. Ii_engine still does not run, it is probably
flooded. Proceed to "Starting a Hooded Engine. _

STARTING A COLD ENGINE OR WARM ENGINE

Move the choke lever to the "Full Choke" position.
•
Slowly press the primer
•
Squeeze and hold the throttle trij_ger. Keep the
throttle trigger fully squeezed _ntil the engine lwns
smoothly.
•
Pull starter rope sharply

switch in the "Off' position; do not release until the
engine has completely stoppe&
STARTING
A FLOODED ENGINE:
Flooded engines can be started by placing the choke
lever in the "Off Choke" position; then, pull the rope
to clear the engine of excess fuel This could requh'e
pulling the starter rope many times depending on
how badly the unit is floode_
If the unit still doesn't start, call the Customer Assistance Hotline at 1-800-235-5878.

The tip of the line does the cutting. You will
achieve the best performance and minimum line

The llne will easily remove grass and weeds
from around wails, fences, trees and flower
beds, but it also can cut the tender bark of
trees or shrubs
and scar fences. To help avoid
damage especially to delicate vegetation or trees
with tender bark, shorten line to 4-5 inches and
use at less than full throttle.
1. Operate the engine at full throttle.
2. Held the trimmer head parallel to and above
the grassy area.
3. Tap the bottom of the trimmer head tightly on
the ground one time. See Figure 7. Approximately 2 inches of line will be advanced with
each tap.
Always tap the trimmer head on a grassy
area. Tapping on surfaces such as concrete or
asphalt can cause excessive wear to the trimmer head.

In most cases, your engine can be made to
run properly with minor carburetor adjustments.
Refer to "Trouble Shooting Suggestions,

Basic carburetor settings are provided below.
• Turn the mixture screw (Figure 21 ) to the
midpoint.
Do not attempt to adjust the screw
beyond the stops as damage can occur.

24. Reassemble tube to the engine, Tighten screws securely.
25. Install the berrel end ofthrottle cable in the trigger. Figure 22 (inset). Re_.ssemble throttle trigger housing onto
the tube. Tighten screws securely.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative

minimizing the formation
of fuel gum deposits during
storage. Add stabilizer to the gasoline in the fuel tank or
fuel storage container. Always follow the mix instructions found on stabilizer container. Run engine at least 5
minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to
reach the carburetor.

2. Que el brazo derecho est_ ligeramente doblado, con la
mano sujetando el mango superior y los dedos sobre el
gatillo del acelerador.
3. Que el mango superior est_ pot debajo del nive! de la
cintura.
4. Que el peso de la herramienta
est_ uniformemente
distribuido entre los brazos.
5. Que, sin que el operador se incline, el cabezaI de corte
est6 cerca de y paralel0 a| suelo y toque f:icilmente el
material a cortar.

La punta de la Ifnea es la que corta. Usted obtendnl el mejor
rendimiento y el desgaste mfnimo de ta lfnea si no la presiona
dentro del firea de cone. Las formas correctas e incorrectas

La Ifnea quitarfi con facilidad

Ajustes may pequefios pueden afectar el rendimiento del
motor. Ks importante girar el tomillo muy poco pot ajuste y
probar el rendimiento antes de efectuar rods ajustes. Cada
ajuste no deben'a ser mayor qae el ancho de la ranura en ei
tomil!o de ajuste:

NOTA: En ta mayorfa de los caso's, su motor puede

y siga los instrucciones.

bfisicas del carburador se iadican abajo.
• Gire el tomillo de mezcta (Figma 21) al punto medio. No
trate de ajustar el tornillo mils alhi de los topes ya que
puede causar dafio.
3. PROCEDIMIENTO
DE AJUSTE
a.
PREPARACION
1. Use una mezcla fresca de combustible_ Vea "Cargando
combustible a su motor"
2. Asegtlrese que la linea de corte se extiende hasta la
Iongitud permitida por el limitador de Ifnea para proveer
una carga correcta al motor.
3. Ponga en marcha el motor. Corm e[ ._sped por 3 minutos
para catentar et motor. Antes que se pueda efectuar
correctamente el ajuste del carburador
el motor debe
estar a la temperatura de operacidn.
b. AJUSTE DE LA VELOCIDAD
DE VACIO
I. Permita que el motor funcione en vacfo. Asegdrese que la
Iinea de eorte se extienda basta la toogitud mfixima
permitida por el limitador de tfnea.
2. Ajuste el tornillo de velocidad en vacfo (Figura 21 ) basra
que el motor confimte funeioaando sin atascarse.
Si el motor se atora o apaga gire el tornHlo en el
sentido de los agujas del reloj para aumentar
ta
velocidad det motor.
Para disminuir la velocidad de! motor gire el tornillo
en sentido contratqo alas agujas det reloj.
3. Siga las instrucciones en "Verificaci6n de aceleraci6n" y
"Verificaci6n de desaceleraci6n"

DE LA DESACELERACION
1. Permita que el motor funeione en vacio. Aseg_irese que la
Ifnea de corte se extienda hasta la Iongitud m_ixima
perrnitida porel limitador de lfnea.
2. Apriete hasta et final el gatillo del aeelerador.
3. Perrnita que el motor funeione a la veloeidad m_ixima pot 1
segundo aproximadamente.
4. Libere et gatillo del aeelerador a la posici6n de vacfo y
escuehe la desaeeleraei6n del motor. El motor debe volver a
ta posici6n de vacfo con suavidad yen de I o 2 segundos+
a. No se requieren m_s ajustes si el rendimiento

durante perlodos prolongados mientras efectde ajustes de

Ifnea de corte est_ alejada del sueto y no entre en contacto

2. Permita que el motor funeione a la vetocidad de vacfo,
despu6s apriete et gafilto del acelerador hasta el final,
NOTA: Efectfie los pasos de 3 a 5 con el aeelerador a fondo.
3. Gire muy lentamente el tomillo de mezcla de atta velocidad
en el senfido de las agujas del reloj (Figura 21), hasta que
disminuy_'ila vetocidad del motor.
4. Gire muy tentamente el tomillo de mezcla de alta velocidad
en sentido contrario alas agujas del reloj. Pare cuando el
motor comience a funeionar con rudeza+
5. Gire el tomillo lentamente la distaneia mfnima hasta que El
motor funcione suavemente. No trate de ajustar el tornil!o
m6s alld de los topes ya que puede causar dago.

17. CUERDA
PARA ARRANCAR
o Reemplace ia cuerda para arrancar que se rompa
ADVERTENCIA:
No saque la aleta de ret_n y el tornillo de la polea. El resorte que
est_ debajo de ia polea est_ bajo tensi6n y puede sallr despedldo
causando lesiones serias. No use la unidad si cualquier pieza de]
con junto de la caja de la polea est_ dafiada, con excepci6n de la
cuerda. Ll_vela a su Centro/Departamento
de Serviclo SEAP_

I. Desconecte el cable de la bujfa. Figura 22.
2. Saque los tomilIos de la armadura del gatil!o deI acelerador;
saque la armadura del gadllo del aeelerador del tabu.
3. Saque el extremo del tambor del cable del aeelerador del gatillo,
Figura 22 (reeuadro).
4, Empuje el extremo del tambor del cable del acelerador dentro
del conducto del cable hasta que el adaptador en Z se deslice
fuera de la placa del acelerador. Figura 23 (recuadro).
5. Saque los tomillos de la armadura de la polea (euatro adelante,
uno cerca de la buj[a) con la pequeha llave hexagonal provista.
6. Separe la cnbierta de la polea del motor.
7. Desconeete los cables del interruptor del mismo. Figura 24.
8. Saque el tomillo retenedor de la cuerda dei poste del tomillo.

9. Gire a mano la polea tanto como pueda.
10. Gire la polea en sentido contrario alas agnjas del retoj basra que
ta muesea de la polea est6 atineada con la muesca de la
armadura al lado de ta aleta de eierre y el tomillo. Figaro 27.
1 I. A continuaei6n gire la polea una vuelta compteta en sentido
contrario alas agujas del reloj basra que los muescas est6n
nuevamente alineadas.
12. tnserte la ilave hexagonal dentto del orificio formado por las
mueseas para mantener en posiei6n a ta polea. Fignra 27
(r_-'uadro -superior izqulerdo).
13. Use un trarno 4T' de caerda de repuesto.
14. Al_jese con la cuerda de repuestb a 10 pies (3 metros) de
distaneia del fanque de combustible. Use un f6sforo y denim
ambos exrremos de ta cuerda para evitar que se deshile.
15. Paso tos extremos derretidos a trav6s de un trapo grueso Iimpio
mientras la cuerda es_ todavla caliente para obtener extremos
suaves yen punta.
16. inserte un extremo de la cuerda a trav6s de la perilla y asegure
con un nudo. Deje una cola de 3!16" detr_ del nudo. Figura 27
(recuadro - superior dereeho).
I% lnserte el otro extremo de la cuerda a travgs de! orificio de
salida de la cuerda, hacia el interior de la armadura, y haeia
arriba a tray, s del orificio de la polea. Figura 27.
18. Enrolle la cuerda en sentido contrario alas agnjas del reloj
alrededor de la cremallera de la Ix)lea y acomode el extremo suelto
debajo de ha cuerda ea el oriflcio de la polea. Deje una cola de 1"
extendida plana encima de ha polea entre la costilla de ret6n y el
poste retenedor como se muestra en las Figuras 26 y 27. La cola de
la cuerda no debe extenderse m_ all_idel clrcnlo elevado de la
polea para evitar intefferencia con haaleta retenedora. Figaro 27.
19. Enrosque el tornillo retenedor de [a cuerda en el poste del
tomillo. Figura 26. No apriete dema.siado el tomillo.
20. Sujete tirante la cuerda en el orificio de salida de modo que la
polea no se mueva. Saque ta Ilave hexagonal y permita que la
cuerda _ envuelva lentamente_
2 t. Conecte los cables del interruptor al mismo.
22. Rearme la armadura de la polea al motor (puede set necesario
tirar de ta euerda para permitir quetas piezas calcen juntas
apropiadamente). Ajuste bien los tomillos.
23. lntroduzca una plaza atraves de la "ventana" en la cnbierta dot
filtro de aire y sujete el adaptador en Z. Fignra 23. Instale el
adaptador en Z en el orificio en la placa dot acelerador. Vea la
Figaro 23 (recuadro). Para a.segurar que el cable y la placa del
acelerador funcionan correctamente tire del extremo del tambor
del cable del aeelerador.
24. Vuelva a armar el tubo al motor, Ajuste bien los tomillos.
25. lnstale el extremo del tambor del cable del acelerador en el
gatillo. Figaro 22 (recuadro). Rearme la armadnra del gatillo del
acelerador en el tabu. Ajtt_te segummente los tomillos.
26. Vuelva a conectarel cable de la bujfa.
