Documentation Terms

The following terms are used throughout this guide:

• “Operator” and “User” refer to the person who uses DVEXtreme.

• “System” refers to the DVEXtreme unit itself.

• “Video system” refers to the mix of interconnected equipment

(including a switcher, edit controller and VTRs) in which the

DVEXtreme system is included.

• “SDI” refers to Serial Digital Video, a digital video signal that is distributed via a single coaxial cable with BNC connectors.

• “Library” and “Database” are used synonymously to describe

DVEXtreme’s database of stills and effects.

• “Image,” “Picture,” and “Still” are used synonymously to describe still pictures.

• A “Keyframe” represents a point in time (in an effect) where an image is located somewhere in 3-D space, and an action occurs — typically, a freeze or some type of image manipulation. Any combination of manipulations, no matter how simple or complex, can be assigned to a keyframe. A series of two or more keyframes defines an effect.

• An “Effect” is a single keyframe or a series of keyframes — either single-channel or multi-channel. DVEXtreme allows you to create and modify effects, save effects to disk, and recall effects from disk. Effects are saved on disk as files with the .eff extension.

• A “Sequence” is a playlist of up to 30 effects (both single and multichannel), that can be run manually or from an edit controller. Because all sequence effects reside in on-line memory simultaneously, there is no need to load them from disk. Similar to effects, sequences can be saved to disk and recalled from disk. Sequences are saved on disk as files with the .seq extension.

• A “Source” refers to an input video signal (to a particular channel or layer). Sources include external video inputs, key signals, and stills.

• A “Channel” represents two layers of video (Layer A and Layer B) that can be uniquely manipulated by DVEXtreme. The system can control up to three channels simultaneously.

~ In a two or three-channel system, DVEXtreme provides four or six video layers respectively.

~ Each layer’s source can be assigned as a still, key, or live video.

~ In any individual channel, each layer can be routed through the

DVE or left as a full-screen image, but if both layers are routed through the DVE, both are manipulated simultaneously.

• “Key” describes the effect of electronically cutting one image into another. DVEXtreme offers many different key “types” such as linear, full, chroma, luma and genie — each of which provides a different method of cutting the foreground image into the background image.

DVEXtreme Installation Guide • Version 2.0 Introduction

•••• 1-3

Welcome to DVEXtreme

Pinnacle’s DVEXtreme is an open-platform digital video effects system capable of manipulating up to three video channels in real-time. DVEXtreme can perform rotation, true perspective, and curvilinear effects on both still and live video images simultaneously. All video and 3-D effects are processed at 10-bit resolution, and all effects can be saved to disk and recalled from disk with precision.

Note

For a complete discussion of all DVEXtreme features and functions, refer to Chapter 1 in the DVEXtreme User’s Guide.

The following sections briefly review DVEXtreme’s features and functions.

Panel

The system consists of the DVEXtreme electronics chassis and a dedicated Control

Panel. Two customer supplied components are also required for operation:

• an SVGA menu monitor for viewing the user interface (or “display”)

• an SDI (serial digital) video monitor for previewing effects

Note that if one or more optional Analog I/O Boards are configured as part of your

DVEXtreme system, an analog composite or component video monitor may be desirable for previewing effects in the analog domain.

The system is available in both 525 and 625 standards. Refer to Chapter 2,

Hardware Installation” for complete details on DVEXtreme’s system hardware and optional I/O boards.

DVEXtreme Installation Guide • Version 2.0

DVEXtreme Software

All DVEXtreme software is provided on CD ROM for easy installation and upgradeability. Each system also includes a standard 3.5" floppy disk drive

(1.44MB) for storing and transporting effects. Upon power-up, the system boots, logs on to Windows NT, and automatically launches the DVEXtreme application for use with the dedicated Control Panel. See Chapter 3, “Software Installation” for complete details on updating or re-installing DVEXtreme’s system software.

User Interface

All effect creation is performed with DVEXtreme’s Control Panel in combination with the display. Control Panel buttons are arranged in concise groups according to functionality. Primary function and channel buttons have built-in LEDs for additional user-feedback. The menu display is divided into sections or “windows,” each of which serves a different DVEXtreme function. Windows are reserved for the timeline, for viewing the effects and image database, for image manipulation parameters, and for creating sequences of effects.

In the DVEXtreme User’s Guide, refer to Chapter 2 “Display” and Chapter 3

Control Panel” for complete information about DVEXtreme’s user interface.

Networking

Each DVEXtreme system includes a network card as standard. This card allows you to connect DVEXtreme to your facility’s network with the ability to share stills and effects across multiple platforms.

Refer to your Windows NT User’s Guide for details on configuring your

DVEXtreme as a network node.

Integral Still Store

DVEXtreme includes a powerful still store for saving and recalling stills and keys on disk as required — in 10-bit digital format. Over 1000 stills can be stored in the

DVEXtreme database, and any still can be downloaded into any layer — on any DVE channel.

Remote Control

The DVEXtreme system is designed to be run from an edit controller or switcher using RS-422 serial communications protocol or GPI (General Purpose Interface) contact closure pulses. Under RS-422 control, port “A” is menu-selectable for either system emulation of a Sony BVW-75 VTR, or recognition of GVG Peripheral

Protocol II for serial GPI control from an editor or switcher.

GPI I/O Capability

Both GPI input and output trigger capability is provided. For GPI inputs, four ports are provided for purposes of triggering specific DVEXtreme functions (such as Play,

Stop, Reverse, or Freeze). For GPI outputs, two ports per channel are provided for purposes of triggering external devices. In Chapter 2, refer to the “GPI Connection” section for details.

2 (2 per channel)

4 (2 per channel)

6 (2 per channel)

In a multi-channel system, inputs are not dedicated to the input module to which they are connected. Using an internal switching matrix, any video input is available to any channel. Refer to the following two sections for important information on input/output module configurations.

Digital 601 Input/Output Module

The DVEXtreme system can be configured with a maximum of three Digital 601

Input/Output modules, each providing a single video channel for manipulation. Each

CCIR-601 module provides two CCIR-601 inputs and two CCIR-601 outputs.

Note the following important points regarding each fully-digital channel:

• Both inputs are 4:2:2 connections.

• The two inputs can be assigned as video or key — as determined simply by your input connections to the chassis. Depending upon your requirements, you could have video-plus-video inputs on one channel and video-plus-key inputs on another.

• The two outputs are dedicated to video and key. However, you can select whether the outputs are channel-specific or combined (using all available channels in the system).

DVEXtreme Installation Guide • Version 2.0

Analog Input/Output Module

Each Digital 601 Input/Output module can be equipped with an Analog I/O module that attaches to the digital module itself. Note the following points regarding each combined analog/digital channel:

• Two inputs are available per module, each of which can be assigned independently as either digital video, digital key, analog video, or analog key.

• Three input combinations are possible on a single channel: two digital inputs, two analog inputs, or one analog input and one digital input.

• The format of each analog input is independently selectable between

10-bit composite, 10-bit component (YUV), RGB or Y/C (S-Video).

• Two digital outputs are provided per module, and dedicated to video and key. Two analog outputs are provided per module, and dedicated to video and key. Analog and digital outputs are always present, simultaneously.

• The format of the analog video output is selectable between 8-bit composite, 8-bit component (YUV), RGB or Y/C (S-Video).

For information on the optional Analog I/O Module and its connectors, refer to

Appendix B, “Analog I/O Option.”

A Word About Windows NT

The DVEXtreme system runs in the Windows

NT environment:

• When an alphanumeric keyboard is used under “local” control (near the chassis), the system obeys all standard Windows NT conventions.

• When the DVEXtreme Control Panel is used in a typical edit suite configuration (away from the chassis), control panel commands are used exclusively — and a mouse is not required. Windows NT is still running, but Control Panel commands take precedence.

For “local” control situations, this guide assumes that you are comfortable with standard Windows-based procedures, such as using Dialog Boxes. These procedures will not be discussed here. If you are not familiar with Windows NT, refer to your

Windows NT User’s Guide or to one of the many third-party books on the subject.

GPI Connection

GPI (General Purpose Interface) is a method by which electronic “pulses” from one device are used to trigger functions on another device. DVEXtreme allows a variety of system functions to be controlled via GPI (using specific assignments on

DVEXtreme’s Remote Control Menu).

• For GPI inputs, four ports are provided for purposes of triggering specific DVEXtreme functions (such as Play, Stop, Reverse, or

Freeze).

• For GPI outputs, two ports (per channel) are provided for purposes of triggering external devices.

The following table lists GPI input and output pinouts on the GPI-A connector. Use the table for reference in the following two sections.

To connect GPI input lines:

1. Using the pinout data from the table in the “GPI Connection” section, construct a custom cable that connects the desired GPI output ports (on your edit controller or switcher) to the desired GPI input lines on

DVEXtreme. Refer to your edit controller or switcher’s technical manual for information regarding its GPI output port pin assignments.

2. With the cable construction complete, connect one end of the cable to the GPI output connector (on your edit controller or switcher) and the other cable end to DVEXtreme’s GPI-A connector.

Refer to the “Remote Control” section in Chapter 5 of the DVEXtreme User’s

Guide for instructions on programming GPI inputs.

The GPI-B connector is not implemented.

Note

GPI Output Connection

The GPI-A connector on the rear chassis includes pins for two GPI output lines

(from “Channel 1” only). If a second or third channel is installed, the two output ports on each channel’s DVE card are not routed to the rear connector panel.

Note

If you wish to connect the GPI output ports from channel 2 and channel

3, a special GPI cable is required. Contact Pinnacle Systems Customer

Service for full details.

DVEXtreme version 2.0 provides two modes for GPI outputs. Using the Setup

Menu, the GPI Out Tally Mode feature can be enabled or disabled as follows:

• When

ON

, GPI outputs trigger when an input is selected. For example, when input 1 is selected on any layer (on any channel), GPI output port

1 triggers. This feature can be used as an “active” source ID.

• When

OFF

, GPI output ports can be programmed into the timeline to trigger at a certain point.

To connect GPI output lines:

1. Using the pinout data from the table in the “GPI Connection” section, construct a cable that connects the desired GPI input ports (on the target device) to the desired GPI output lines on DVEXtreme.

DVEXtreme Installation Guide • Version 2.0

If you have already wired your GPI inputs, simply add wiring for your

GPI outputs to the same connector. Refer to the peripheral device’s technical manual for information regarding its GPI input port pinouts.

2. With the cable construction complete, connect one end of the cable to the GPI input connector (on your peripheral device) and the other cable end to DVEXtreme’s GPI-A connector.

Refer to the “Remote Control” section in Chapter 5 of the DVEXtreme Pro User’s

Guide for instructions on programming GPI outputs.

Connecting GVG Peripheral Mode

DVEXtreme version 2.0 provides a powerful peripheral interface to Grass Valley 200 series switchers through E-MEM recalls. This interface also works for other switchers that are capable of supporting the GVG Peripheral Protocol II. Peripheral control allows the GVG 200/250 system to recall DVEXtreme effects at the same time that it recalls its own E-MEMs.

The following hardware is required for the GVG Peripheral Mode to operate:

1.

Null Modem 9-pin “D” Type to 9-pin “D” Type (refer to the “E-MEM

Cable Pinout” section below for details).

2.

GVG Dual Serial Adapter to activate switcher peripheral port #1 (refer to the specific GVG Switcher Installation Guide for details).

3.

STREAMLINE Effects Controller option for the GVG switcher.

Please note the following important points:

• The initial configuration requires that you set the proper peripheral GPI communications within the GVG switcher.

• The user has to define the GPI assignments utilizing GVG mainframe pod keypad. There are two types of GPIs in the GVG 200:

~ Numbers

1

through

6

are contact closure GPIs.

~ The letters

A

through

F

are serial peripheral control GPIs.

DVEXtreme supports five functions that should be assigned to GPI

A

through GPI

E

using the pod keypad connected to the switcher mainframe. Refer to GVG switcher pod keypad or installation manuals under Setup #6 “PERIPH GPI” for more details.

Assign all peripheral GPI letters to device #1. If you are already using device #1, then select another device number.

Set the trigger codes to perform the following functions:

• Trigger #1 to GPI A = Run Forward

• Trigger #2 to GPI B = Run Reverse

• Trigger #3 to GPI C = Stop

• Trigger #6 to GPI D = Goto Start

• Trigger #7 to GPI E = Goto End

• Analog and digital outputs are always present, simultaneously — each provides the identical video content, only in different formats.

• The format of the analog video output is selectable, between 10-bit composite, 10-bit component (YUV), RGB, or Y/C (S-Video). This function is performed with the SETVIDS.EXE application.

• The SETVIDS.EXE application is also used to set input levels, output levels, adjust input timing, and adjust output timing.

Thus, with a fully configured three-channel system, you can mix and match all six inputs as required, using the desired combination of analog and digital formats.

Connecting Signals

This section provides instructions for connecting analog video signals using the combined Analog I/O Module plus Digital I/O Module.

• In this chapter, refer to the “Analog I/O Module Connector Panel” section for an illustration of all rear chassis connectors.

• In this chapter, refer to the “Chassis Backplane Components” section for an illustration of all backplane connectors.

• In chapter 2, “Hardware Installation,” refer to the “Connecting

Signals” section for instructions on connecting digital video inputs and outputs, reference video, control, power, and communication signals.

Connect all required signals as outlined in the following sections.

Input connection

To connect analog video inputs:

1. Connect one of the following sources for analog input 1:

• Connect a composite source to the CMPST/Y1 connector on the first Analog I/O Module in your system.

• Connect a YC source to the CMPST/Y1 and B1 connectors on the first Analog I/O Module.

• Connect an RGB source to the CMPST/Y1, B1, and R1 connectors on first Analog I/O Module.

• Connect a YUV source to the CMPST/Y1, B1, and R1 connectors on the first Analog I/O Module in your system.

2. Connect one of the following sources for analog input 2:

Output Connection

To connect analog video outputs:

1. For the Analog I/O Module on channel 1, if you are monitoring in the analog domain, connect the analog outputs to the input of your analog effects preview monitor. This connection is required because channel 1 is the only output that provides channel ID cursors. For Analog

Modules on Channels 2 and 3, there are no ID cursors.

Connect to one of the following destinations:

• For composite monitoring, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B, and

CMPST/R connectors. Each provides an identical composite output.

• For YC monitoring, use the CMPST/R and CMPST/B connectors.

• For RGB monitoring, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B and

CMPST/R connectors.

• For YUV monitoring, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B and

CMPST/R connectors.

2. For the Analog I/O Modules on channels 2 and 3, connect the analog outputs to the input of a destination analog video device (such as an analog video switcher or routing switcher).

Connect to one of the following destinations:

• For composite destinations, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B, and

CMPST/R connectors. Each provides an identical composite output.

• For YC destinations, use the CMPST/R and CMPST/B connectors.

• For RGB destinations, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B and

CMPST/R connectors.

• For YUV destinations, use the CMPST/Y, CMPST/B and

Saving and Loading Setups

Using the SETVIDS.EXE application, you have the ability to save multiple settings for the analog alignment of your DVEXtreme system. This feature allows you to have different timing settings for different locations within your facility, as required.

On the I/O Status Tab, the Save Adjustments and Load Adjustments sections provide the required functionality. Each section is discussed in detail below.

Saving SETVIDS Adjustments

The Save Adjustments section provides controls for storing analog settings to disk.

The two mutually exclusive radio buttons work in conjunction with the

Save

button.

• Click

User Settings

to save a file of custom analog settings to disk.

You can store multiple “user” files as required.

• Click

Default Settings

to save a single file of commonly used analog settings as the default file. Only one default file can be stored — it is overwritten each time.

Note that the single Factory Settings file can not be overwritten.

Once the desired ratio button is selected, click

SAVE

. The Select SetVids Analog

Setup File Dialog appears. The list is filtered based on the selected radio button.

Type the desired filename (for a “User” file) and click

Save

to save it to disk. To save the default file, simply click

Save

.
