MOTOROLA DEFY™ is water-resistant and dustproof to withstand daily adventures – and accidents. With enhanced web browsing and a high-resolution touchscreen display that provides edge-to-edge views of your favorite websites, photos and videos—it’s also boredom proof.

Your phone

Most of what you need is in the touchscreen and four simple keys on the front:

• Menu: Open menu options.

• Home: Go to the home screen.

• Back: Go back one screen.

• Search: Search your apps and the web.

Register

Create or log into a MOTOBLUR account to get your contacts, email, messages, and status all in one place. Registration is secure, and should only take a few minutes. You can touch

Menu to skip setup, then touch > Accounts later.

Note: This phone supports apps and services that use a lot of data, so make sure your data plan meets your needs. For details, contact your service provider.

Touchscreen

It’s all in the touch:

• Touch: Choose an icon or option.

• Touch & Hold: Open options.

• Drag: Scroll or move slowly.

• Flick: Scroll or move quickly.

Note: Your touchscreen might stay dark during calls if the sensor just above it is covered. Don't use covers or screen protectors (even clear ones) that cover this sensor.

Home screen

Quick start: Home screen The home screen gives you all your latest information in one place. It’s what you see when you turn on the phone or touch Home from a menu.

Tip: From the home screen, touch Menu > Profiles to design different home screens for Work, Home, or

Weekend. Your changes are stored in each profile.

Personalize

Go ahead, add your personal touch. Change your widgets, wallpaper, ringtone, and more—make it yours.

• Home screen: To add something or change your

• wallpaper, touch and hold an empty spot until you open the Add to Home screen menu.

Apps

You can find all of your apps in one place. From the home screen, just touch to open the app menu.

To download more apps, touch > Market.

Your phone can tell you when there’s an updated app or other phone software. To install the update, just follow the instructions on your screen.

Calls

Quick start: Calls Your dial pad and call lists are just a touch or two away—no menus needed. Just touch Dialer from the home screen.

Tip: During a call, touch Home or Back to hide the active call display and use other apps. To reopen it, touch Dialer.

Contacts

Now you have contacts like you’ve never had before, downloaded from your accounts and backed up on

MOTOBLUR. Touch Contacts in the home screen.

Tip: When you flick or drag this list, a scroll bar appears on the right. Drag the scroll bar to move the list faster. To search the list, just open your phone and type a name.

To edit a contact, open it and touch Menu > Edit.

Messages

All of your messages stay in one place—text, IM, email,

Facebook, and more. Touch > Messaging >

Universal Inbox.

Tip: To type in a message, touch a text field to open the touchscreen keypad.

To add email accounts, touch > Accounts > Add

account. Choose Corporate Sync for Microsoft™

Exchange work email (for settings, ask your IT administrator) or Email for most other accounts (for settings, ask the account provider).

Updates

Add accounts Find out what everyone is doing. Touch your Messages or

Happenings widgets to see the newest update, then:

• Touch a person’s name to open their info.

• Touch the widget title to open a list view.

• Touch to open the full update, then touch the social network’s icon to open its web site.

To add a Social Networking widget, touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen, then touch Motorola

widgets.

Photos, videos & music

Photos See it, capture it, share it! You’ll even have time to relax to some music.

• Photos: Touch > Camera.

• Videos: Touch > Camcorder.

To see what you’ve taken, touch

Music: Touch

> Gallery.

> Music, then choose a song.

Wireless

Quick start: Wireless To connect a Bluetooth™ headset or car kit, touch

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks >

Bluetooth settings.

To use a Wi-Fi™ network for fast Internet access and to download data, touch Menu > Settings > Wireless &

networks > Wi-Fi settings.

If your Wi-Fi network has other DLNA™ Certified devices, you can use them to play or transfer the videos, pictures, and music stored on your phone: Touch > DLNA.

Web & maps

Browse, download, and search (of course). And if you need to know where you are or where you’re going, we’ve got that covered too.

• Browser: Touch > Browser and surf to your heart’s content using the super fast network or Wi-Fi connections.

• Maps: Touch > Maps to use the Google Maps™ you know and love. With built-in GPS, you’ll have pinpoint navigation all the way.

Security

Quick start: Security You have lots of ways to keep your phone safe.

Find it: Menu > Settings > Location & security

If you lose your phone, you can log into your MOTOBLUR account from a computer to locate your phone or clear the data on it: www.motorola.com/mymotoblur.

Tips

Shortcuts Here are some good things to know:

• Save Battery: Touch Menu > Settings > Battery

Manager. You can choose Battery mode > Maximum

battery saver.

• See Recent Apps: Touch and hold Home .

• Change the keypad: Touch and hold a blank spot in a text box. A menu opens, where you can choose Input

Method > Swype or Multi-touch keyboard.

Swype™ text entry lets you drag your finger over the letters of a word in one continuous motion.
