Key messages
HP SmartStream software for HP PageWide XL and HP DesignJet printers is a
professional software solution that helps improve your productivity and operator
efficiency, while helping you expand with color production.
Your large-format production workflow—now two times more efficient for
both monochrome and color without changing your current workflow1
Thanks to HP SmartStream software you can gain:
1.
SPEED—Do jobs in half the time1
HP SmartStream software helps you respond to the tightest deadlines with ultra-fast HP SmartStream Preflight
Manager processing. With the embedded Adobe PDF Print Engine 3, 2 HP SmartStream software natively manages
PDFs to provide reliable reproduction of the files. So it’s not longer necessary to convert PDF into TIFF or JPEG in
order to obtain a correct print. You can also identify potential PDF issues before they occur with automatic error
detection that helps you avoid incorrect prints. With HP SmartStream software, you can simplify the production
of large jobs by creating presets to bundle settings. Managing a multi-page job is easy and fast with features like
presets, filtering, sorting, and extracting.
2.
EFFICIENCY—Your current workflow just better
Empower your current production workflow with the intuitive HP SmartStream Preflight Manager while managing
all connected HP PageWide XL and HP DesignJet printers in your fleet. Even production accessories like the online
folder, high-capacity, and integrated top stackers can be run from the software.
Also, HP SmartStream software helps you improve your current production workflow efficiency whether you are
a single operator managing the end-to-end flow of a job—from job reception to preparation/preflight to
printing—or you work in a multiple operator environment. HP SmartStream software is an ideal fit for Enterprise
CRD (central reprographic department) environments, as it allows internal users to send files to the HP
SmartStream Inbox managed by the CRD operator.
3.
GROWTH—Expand with color production
With a large-format workflow that is two times more efficient,1 you can focus on growing your business by
expanding into new areas such as color production: efficiently produce all your GIS maps and point-of-sale (POS)
posters at high speed on HP PageWide XL printers. With the HP Crystal Preview Technology embedded in HP
SmartStream software, you can preview color just as it will print, to help avoid incorrect prints. Get the most out
of your media with the nesting feature designed to minimize paper waste. In addition, you can easily adjust
settings with the interactive preview: crop, rotate, and move the files as you wish. The job report summary feature
enables greater invoice accuracy—it even includes pixel coverage data.
Bring key efficiencies to your business by adding a powerful solution to enhance your current production workflow. Now
you can turn operator efficiency into operating profit with HP SmartStream for HP PageWide XL and HP DesignJet printers.

Product Q&A
1. General
Q: Who is the ideal customer for the new HP SmartStream software?
A: HP SmartStream software is ideal for repro houses and enterprise customers with their own central CRDs who know that
printing is just the last part of a complex workflow. They are constantly receiving very different types of jobs and spend a
lot of time in preflighting before printing. For this reason, they might be losing productivity and profitability.
HP SmartStream software is designed to avoid this by helping professional print service providers (PSPs) achieve a more
efficient workflow in environments with a single or multiple operators.
Q: Which components must I purchase to use HP SmartStream software?
A: HP Smartstream professional software consists of:
1.
HP SmartStream Preflight Manager for HP PageWide XL and HP DesignJet printers: The “brain” of the
software; you only need to install one license per location or sub-network; download the correct installer for
your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) from http://hp.com/go/smartstreampagewidexl/software or
http://hp.com/go/smartstreamdesignjet/software
2.
3.
HP SmartStream Print Controller: you need a Print Controller for each printer you would like to manage through
HP SmartStream software
4.
One PostScript license per printer: in case your printer is not PostScript; the license is stored in the printer
The HP SmartStream software licenses are purchased and stored on a license server on your local network. When you run
the software, it contacts the license server to check that you have the appropriate licenses. Thus, the software can be run
on different computers at the same time, depending on the licenses purchased.
Q: What are the minimum computer hardware and software requirements?
A: The minimum computer hardware and software requirements are:
● Intel Core i3 2.4 GHz with 4 virtual cores/threads, or equivalent or better processor
● 4 GB of RAM, or more
● 3.5 GB of free space on hard disk, or more, plus 100 MB for each additional printer added
● Screen resolution of 1280 × 1024 pixels, or more, tuned or calibrated to sRGB for optimal HP Crystal Preview
Technology performance
● Ethernet network, IPv4 or IPv6, 100 Mb/s or faster
● Microsoft Windows 7 or later (32-bit or 64-bit)
Ensure that your computer is connected to the same subnet as your printers. Otherwise, ensure that computer and printers
are able to communicate through the 8080, 8085, 8086, 9100 TCP, and 161UDP ports.
Q: What file types are supported?
A: HP SmartStream software supports PDF, TIFF, JPEG, HP-GL/2, and SMJ files. An SMJ file is an HP SmartStream job file
that can be shared with other users or saved while keeping the settings already applied to the job (i.e.: color, size…).
It also supports DWG, DWF, MS Office, or any other file format from any application through the driver.

Product Q&A
2. SPEED—Do jobs in 50% of the time1
Q: What is Adobe PDF Print Engine 32 and what are its benefits?
A: Adobe PDF Print Engine 32 is the next-generation rendering platform, optimized for end-to-end PDF workflows. It
combines performance optimizations with a new scalability framework to power high-speed digital presses, large-format
printers, and CTP platesetters. Adobe PDF Print Engine 32 is the fastest rendering platform for reliable reproduction of
complex, graphically rich content.
This platform is built on a modern, modular architecture which maximizes system resources and rendering efficiency. It
provides full support for the PDF imaging model, including live transparency, complex vector work, mixed color spaces, and
16-bit color conversions.
Adobe PDF Print Engine 32 also leverages the strengths of industry standards such as ICCs (color profiles), JDF (job tickets),
and PDF/X to enable superior production management and color fidelity.
In addition, it reduces the trade-offs between reliability and flexibility, which means fewer jobs sent back for changes.
Finally, it uses the same core imaging technologies as industry-leading Adobe applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator,
and Acrobat. This results in a high degree of predictability when using these applications.

Q: What options does the preview offer and how is it useful?
A: HP SmartStream software preview is interactive. This means that it permits image manipulation directly from the
preview using the following tools provided in the preview pane:

The Rotate tool allows you to rotate the image

The Move tool allows you to select the image or the page, and move it to a new position on the paper; you can
also use the Move tool to resize an image, by dragging a corner of the image

The Crop tool allows you to crop the image
Q: What are the typical PDF issues that the software can report?
A: When PDF files are added to HP SmartStream software, the program checks them for possible problems. If a job has
issues, it is flagged with the error(s) and problems can be resolved automatically or manually depending on the need. If
there are no messages about a job, then the job will be sent to print.
The typical PDF issues reported by HP SmartStream software are the following:

Fonts are missing—the application can automatically substitute other fonts for the missing fonts; alternatively,
you may be able to recreate the PDF file with the correct fonts embedded in it

The file contains one or more embedded PostScript objects that will not be printed

A password is needed to open the protected file

There are references to external items, which will not be printed; if you want to print these items, they must be
embedded in the file

Some layers are not printable—you can check what will be printed in the preview

Some layers are not visible, but can be printed—you can check what will be printed in the preview

Product Q&A
3. EFFICIENCY—Your production workflow
just better
Q: Does HP SmartStream software allow you to manage the printing queue from all
operators and printers?
A: Yes, this functionality is available in order to help you improve your current technical production workflow efficiency
whether you work in an environment with a single operator or multiple operators, with one printer or multiple printers.
Q: How can different operators share/send jobs to each other through HP SmartStream
software?
A: First of all, operators can work without having a printer assigned. This will allow them to prepare the job regardless of
the printing settings defined in the “Preflight” desk within the printers’ pane in the job preparation tab.
Then, jobs can be shared from one operator to another through hot folders (for both incoming and outgoing files). HP
SmartStream software even offers the possibility to create presets that may be applied automatically when files are
dragged from this folder. A preset is a group of settings saved together under a single name.
You can even send a job or some pages from one printer to another by easily dragging them to the other printer in the
printers’ pane.
Q: Can I use HP SmartStream software to operate my CRD?
A: Yes, in an enterprise environment, the HP SmartStream software solution allows users (such as architects or engineers)
to send jobs to the CRD, so that the central print operator can print them.
In order to streamline the job submission and subsequent processing by the print operator, the installation of HP
SmartStream software in the CRD should have one or more hot folders configured to a folder that any user in the enterprise
can access.
Likewise, each user’s installation of the HP SmartStream Submission Driver should point to a hot folder that is connected
to the CRD’s HP SmartStream software. The HP SmartStream Submission Driver allows definition of the desired print
settings as well as the Account ID.
8
Product Q&A
Once sent, the job is received in the HP SmartStream Inbox together with a ticket that explains the settings that the user
wants to apply to the job, as well as the Account ID and any comment that the user would like to add such as email address,
urgency of the job… With this information the CRD operator can start preparing or sending the job directly to print.
Q: How can I configure the application in order to suit my specific needs?
A: HP SmartStream software can be configured to adapt to your current workflow and to suit your specific needs. It can be
used both in work environments, where multiple users are involved in the preparation and printing process, as well as in
environments with a single operator/user. Thanks to the hot folders system for incoming and outgoing files, more than one
user can use the software simulatenously and send files to each other.
HP SmartStream software has a customizable panel that allows you to configure the application to suit your specific needs.
The one single-screen view provides all the information at a glance and helps you manage your entire printing workflow.
Together with a user-friendly interface, HP SmartStream software enables you to easily process large jobs while getting
fast and accurate previews from complex PDFs.

Preflight desk instead of a printer, if you want to prepare jobs without assigning them to a specific printer
2.
The job preparation pane, showing the pages of the job
3.
The preview pane, showing a preview of the selected page
4.
The settings pane, which lists the print settings for the selected page
You can also change the order of the settings that appear in the job preparation pane and have full settings including
General options, Cropping, Page options, Paper source options, and Advanced options.
In addition, you can use the Filter, Extract, Sort, and Remove pages options for single or multiple pages in the job
preparation area.
Another way that this professional software helps meet your current needs is by allowing you to see the printing queue
from multiple users and printers, so that you can decide easily where to send the next job to print and you can see what
others are working on.
Q: What is the maximum capacity of the Job history?
A: The capacity of the HP SmartStream software Job history is unlimited. It stores all the printed files until the deletion date
defined in preferences. Jobs older than this date are deleted from the history.
The history contains a tab for each printer, which has its own separate history, and it includes various items of information
about the original job.

4. GROWTH—Expand with color production
Q: What functionality does HP SmartStream software offer for graphics applications?
A: HP SmartStream software offers several features to help you efficiently produce all your HP PageWide XL GIS/point-ofsale (POS) posters and HP DesignJet Z-series graphics jobs:

HP Crystal Preview Technology: To help avoid reprints and rework, you see an on-screen preview of the color in
pages just as it will print—and you can adjust settings. The HP Crystal Preview Technology shows what and how
content will be printed with true accuracy because the preview is soft color-proofed to the media assigned.

Nesting: To optimize paper use and time, HP SmartStream software allows you to decide on the media roll where
to print the nested pages, the type of nesting you would like to apply, and the margins left between pages. It also
shows you a preview of how nesting will be generated and, thanks to the interactive preview, you can re-order
and re-position pages along the roll.
Q: What data and job information will I receive to be able to accurately invoice clients?
A: HP SmartStream software generates a job summary report with accurate data for invoicing that includes:

Total number of pages and area of paper printed, not including wasted paper outside the page area

Number of pages per paper-type category

Number of pages per page size

Area of paper used per image category

Accounting information for the job as a whole such as:

o
Client name
o
Job order ID
o
Account ID
o
Comments
Work log with a summary of the settings that were applied to the printed pages, and a summary of any unsolved
problems

Product Q&A
Q: What happens if I close or exit the HP SmartStream software application and open it
again?
A: When you open the software again, the same file you were working with before appears. Even if your computer is turned
off, the file you were working with will still be there.
Keep in mind that if you are printing to an HP DesignJet printer, its printing queue is stored in the PC. This means that if you
close the application, you may lose all the pending jobs to be printed
This does not occur if you are printing to an HP PageWide XL printer, because in that case the queue is stored in the printer.
