ABOUT i³DVR INTERNATIONAL
i³DVR International Inc. is a leading designer, manufacturer,
and supplier of digital video technologies for today’s security
industry. Founded in 1990, we were originally established to
assist customers with security installation. With subsequent
advancements in technology, however, we soon began
evaluating alternative technology solutions, finding a niche in
the production and distribution of digital video management
systems. The company quickly excelled in developing
cutting-edge technology solutions designed to take
conventional security to the next level.
By early 2000, we had earned a reputation as one of the
most flexible and technologically innovative companies
in the industry. Within a four-year period, the demand for
our product had sky-rocketed. The explosive growth of
the company required the opening of new distribution and
warehousing facilities and the expansion of our highly-skilled
engineering and development team.
Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, i³DVR systematically
established a vast network of partners and dealers, through
which we distribute competitively priced, state-of-the-art
technologies. i³DVR operates globally, with numerous sales
and service centers
throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

platforms include data management software, license plate
recognition software, human/object recognition and tracking
software, and retail point of sale applications aimed at
providing retailers with critical sales transaction data.
OUR TEAM FOCUS AND COMMITMENT
Our company takes great pride in maintaining a team-based,
family-centered work environment in the face of rapid
expansion. In fact, the family atmosphere that characterized
our business at its inception still very much defines the
company today. Clients continue to be drawn to us, not only
because of our commitment to quality products and services,
but also because of our unique, collaborative working

TAKE SHRINK REDUCTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL
A supermarket chain achieves a four-month payback on its asset
protection exception reporting solution.
Reducing shrink in one retail franchise is difficult, but as you grow,
it becomes increasingly complicated. Penn Traffic understands
these challenges. The company operates 112 supermarkets in
the northeast United States under the BI-LO, P&C, and Quality
trade names. It also provides wholesale food distribution to 78
franchises, 51 independent operators, and Penny Curtiss. Penn
Traffic used a homegrown exception reporting tool to investigate
dishonest shrink-related activities, but its Asset Protection
department sought to gather supplementary data to assist with
its AP (asset prevention) efforts and link that data to the video
gathered at stores. Penn Traffic wanted a solution that analyzed the
activities that caused the exception, not one that simply identified
patterns and required assumptions to be made (as with the
homegrown solution). Additionally, it wanted to maintain historical
data and retrieve current data rapidly following a questionable
incident. Therefore, Catherine Penizotto, director of asset
protection, attended the NRF (National Retail Federation) show a
few years ago in search of a new exception reporting solution.
“i³DVR enables remote viewing from the
corporate locations to all stores, motion
recording [i.e. only recording if motion
is detected], and specific in-store site
recordings, such as monitoring only
activities near the razor blades.”

SOLUTIONS FOR
RETAILERS
BY: LAURIE PASQUERELL
A team from many Penn Traffic departments compared solutions
and selected Retail Expert’s NaviStor and Store Manager’s Report
for Exception Reporting and Cashier Counseling, along with i³DVR
from Navco, as its integrated digital video solution. “NaviStor has
the flexibility to meet our needs, and it contains add-on components
[e.g. Pharmacy and Direct Store Delivery] that we can grow into,”
says Penizotto. “i³DVR enables remote viewing from the corporate
locations to all stores, motion recording [i.e. only recording if
motion is detected], and specific in-store site recordings, such as
monitoring only activities near the razor blades.” It also allows AP
field technicians to review video and exception reporting data via
laptops with wireless connections. “The i³DVR functionality was
compared with other DVR products and was found to better fit our
needs,” says Tim Sullivan, asset protection systems administrator.
Penn Traffic encountered a few challenges, however. It currently
uses two different POS systems and different DVRs at its stores, so
the data from different formats had to be merged through NaviStor.
Additionally, the project budget didn’t include replacement DVRs
at all stores. Therefore, new stores are outfitted with i³DVR
equipment, and select stores were upgraded.
Access Historical Data, Spread KPIs Throughout Operations
Penizotto and Sullivan branded the solution’s historical data OPTIC
(optimizing profitability through information collaboration) and
customized the NaviStor solution to fit their business needs.

DVR CUTS SHRINK, CRIME FOR RESTAURANT
CHAIN
A digital video recording system linked to the POS helps a pizza
chain monitor employee behavior and deter crime.
Headquartered in Toronto, Pizza Pizza operates 354 pizzerias
throughout the Canadian province of Ontario. About three years
ago, management recognized a need to reduce shrink while increasing overall security in its stores. Derek Diaram, IT manager, and his
staff were asked to find a solution that would allow the company to
achieve these goals without straining its technology budget.
Diaram evaluated several options, but rejected them because of
their prices. The company then opted to implement a digital video
recorder (DVR) system from i³DVR International, which had features
comparable to the other solutions considered (for example, the
ability to overlay captured images onto POS data maintained in an
Oracle database), at less than half the price.
“With the DVR technology, we really have
a third eye, so to speak, and can investigate situations it wasn’t possible to investigate before.”

INTEGRATED
SOLUTIONS FOR
RETAILERS
BY: JULIE RITZER ROSS
Each store has a camera component in the front and a digital recording
device in the back room. The system operates 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Store managers review images on the spot whenever
they deem it necessary. WAN connections (1.5 to 4 MB, depending on
the store) allow district managers and individuals at corporate headquarters to monitor activity at individual units in real time, as well as to
download images captured on and stored in the system.
“With the DVR technology, we really have a third eye, so to speak,
and can investigate situations it wasn’t possible to investigate
before,” Diaram observes. “For example, if someone notices too
many voids from one register in the POS database, we can tap into
the system and grab the video images as an overlay. If there’s an
incident in one of our stores, the district manager can ask to see all
the images that were captured between specific times on a particular day. We can even put those images on a CD to review again or
show the police.”
Combine DVR With Internet To Improve Customer Service
Diaram says the solution has sparked a significant reduction in shrink.
One reason this is so, he notes, is that the DVR serves as a deterrent
against excessive voids and other fraudulent acts by employees at
the point of sale. Just as significantly, the system’s presence sends a
message to would-be perpetrators that they will likely be apprehended
should they try to commit any crime in the stores.
Pizza Pizza is also benefiting from using the technology in areas
other than loss prevention. Specifically, district managers regularly
log in to the system to view food preparation in the restaurants’
kitchens. Problems are then addressed immediately, contributing to
product quality assurance and minimizing customer complaints.

“We also found that the systems are very helpful in our
interactions with police services since we’re able to
produce a CD for the police when required, which in turn
helps speed their investigation.”
Jean-Francois Bourgoin, Loss Prevention & Corporate Security Manager, Tommy Hilfiger Canada Inc.
“The i³DVR systems have proven very useful in both
increasing security at our locations and also analysis of
incidents”.
Bruce Gardner, Senior Co-Ordinator Facility,Maintenance & Equipment Installation, Mr.Lube
“I think one of the major reasons we went with i³DVR
was the customization. We actually worked with them to
change their product. They were willing to work with our
company and bring to the table a product that was costeffective, and works very well.”
Derek Diaram, Store Manager, Pizza Pizza

SRX-PRO Digital Video Management Systems (DVMS)
[ A p p lic a t io n & B e n e f it s ]
i³DVR’s SRX-Pro 24024RS is an authentic, 24-channel DVMS hybrid that
results from collaboration between IP technology and traditional analog
CCTV signal. With a combination of 8 IP and 16 analog channels, SRX-Pro
provides the stability and flexibility necessary for all system integrators.
With this latest product offering, clients can effectively store video at a
local facility while importing video signals from a remote location.
Tailored to suit the needs of both the end-user and the system
integrator, SRX-Pro offers a clear, premium resolution DVD quality
picture. Complimenting its exceptional resolution quality is the ability
to capture video at high frames per second. Additionally, while in live
mode, SRX-Pro offers the capacity to view an astonishing 24 channels in
real time at DVD quality.
Finally, SRX-Pro also provides an extraordinary, state-of-the-art
capacity to search in live mode. This user-friendly feature permits
clients to view previously recorded video while still in live mode. Not
only can they select any of the 24 available display channels and
simultaneously view the recorded video, but they can also download,
store, and copy the recorded video onto a CD/DVD.
