UFS 922 si/sw
Twin HDTV satellite receiver
with hard disk
Preface
Dear customer,
this Operating Manual is intended to help you make the fullest use of the extensive range of functions offered by your new
receiver.
We have tried to make the operating instructions as easy as possible to understand, and to keep them as concise as
possible. To help you understand particular specialist terms that cannot be translated, we have added a short glossary at
the end of the manual.
In the contents on the next page you will see the main headings of the respective chapters of this operating manual. At the
beginning of each chapter we have also provided a short list summarising the points that are covered in that chapter.
If you need to find a particular sub-section within a chapter, you can look it up in the comprehensive index at the end of this
operating manual.
The power switch is an environmentally friendly feature. If you will not be using your receiver for an extended period, you
should use the power switch to disconnect it from the power supply and save energy. For shorter breaks, you can use the
remote control to switch the receiver to standby, which uses only a minimal amount of energy.
We want you a good reception and hope you will enjoy using your new HDTV receiver.

KATHREIN team
Difference between PAL and HDTV
The difference between PAL and HDTV
“High definition television” is characterised by a significantly
higher number of picture lines on the TV set. The usual
European standard PAL achieves a resolution of 576
lines vertically and 720 lines horizontally. High-resolution
PAL 720 x 576
TV sets have resolutions up to five times higher and thus
provide more detail sharpness and plasticity than TV to the
usual PAL standard.
720p 1280 x 720
A HDTV picture can contain up to five times as many picture
points, i.e. approximately 2 million pixels, compared to a
conventional PAL picture with only approximately 400,000
1080i 1920 x 1080
pixels.
Worldwide, there are currently two HDTV standards based on the two formats 1080i and 720p. The two standards differ in
the number of picture lines and in the transmission procedure. For the human eye, the difference between the two HDTV
standards is hardly perceptible, however; in comparison to the PAL system, moving pictures look much more dynamic.
Transmission technology and reception equipment will be able to handle both standards in the future.
Disposal Instructions
Electronic equipment is not domestic waste - in accordance with directive 2002/96/EC OF THE
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE COUNCIL dated 27th January 2003 concerning used electrical
and electronic appliances, it must be disposed of properly.
At the end of its service life, take this unit for disposal to an appropriate official collection point.
Spent batteries are special waste!
Do not throw spent batteries into your domestic waste; take them to a collection point for used
batteries!

Safety Instructions – Important Information
This page contains important information about the operation, installation location and connection of the unit.
Read these instructions carefully before starting to use the unit.
Mains cable
DANGER!
Make sure that the mains cable (power supply cable) is not damaged. Units with a damaged mains cable must be
disconnected from the mains (disconnect mains connector) and repaired by a qualified engineer before setup. Only
use the power pack supplied (if available)!
Risk of death due to electric shock!
Cleaning
Disconnect the mains connector before cleaning the unit. Only use a dry cloth for cleaning and only clean the outer
surface. Never open the unit.
Touching the parts inside the unit carries a risk of death due to electric shock!
Playing children
Make sure that children do not push any objects into the ventilation slots.
Risk of death due to electric shock!
Earth connection
The antenna system must be earthed as specified or equipotentially bonded. EN 60728/11 and any national
regulations must be complied with.
WARNING!
Danger due to surge voltages, lightning strikes!
Mains voltage
Only operate the unit with the specified mains voltage (marked on the rear of the-unit or on the external power pack)!
The unit may only be connected to the mains and turned on once it has been connected to the antenna and to the
TV set or the cable network and PC.
If the mains voltage is too high, there is a risk of fire!
Repairs
Ensure that any repairs to your unit are carried out by qualified personnel. Opening the unit and attempting to repair
it yourself voids all warranty claims!
Improper work on the unit can jeopardise the electrical safety of the unit.
The manufacturer accepts no liability for accidents caused by the user opening the unit!
Connections
Incorrect wiring of the connections can lead to malfunctions or defects on the unit!
CAUTION!
Long periods of absence/storms/accessibility of the mains connector
Always turn off the unit at the mains switch if you will be absent for a long time or there is a storm. Disconnect it
from the mains by unplugging the mains connector. This also applies to the other equipment connected to the unit.
Isolation from the cable network is also recommended. Note any timer programs (receiver) and turn the unit on
again promptly before the recording time. Ensure the mains connector is accessible at all times.
Installation location
All electronic equipment generates heat. However, the heating of this unit lies within the permissible range. Sensitive
furniture surfaces and veneers may become discoloured by the effects of constant heat over time. The feet of the
unit can also cause colour changes to treated furniture surfaces. If necessary, place the unit on a suitable stable
and flat base!
Ventilation
The heat generated in this unit is adequately dissipated. However, the unit should never be installed in a cupboard
or on shelves with inadequate ventilation. Never cover the cooling slots on the unit (e.g. with other equipment,
magazines, tablecloths or curtains)!
Do not place any objects on top of the unit and maintain a clearance of at least 10 cm above the unit, so that the
heat generated can be dissipated with no obstructions.
Moisture, sunlight, heat, naked flames
Protect the unit against moisture, dripping and splashed water (do not place any filled objects such as vases on
top of the unit). Do not place the unit close to a heater or expose it to direct sunlight and do not operate it in damp
locations. Only use the unit in a moderate climate, not in tropical conditions! Do not expose the unit to any naked
flame, such as from a candle! This constitutes a fire hazard!
Important Information
Channel assignment
The channels available on the satellites and transponders are subject to continual change. If changes do occur, the new
channels have to be set on the receiver because the factory preset programming corresponds to the status on the date of
manufacture. The information for these settings can be found on the Internet or in relevant magazines.
Updating the receiver software
Your receiver was equipped in the factory with the latest software version at that time. We are however constantly working
on and adapting the software to the wishes of our customers and to developments in technology. Further information on this
can be found in the chapters “Main Menu - Service Menu”, “Service Menu”, “Software Update”.
Network function
To connect the PC/laptop and receiver to the network, you must have unrestricted rights (administrator rights) for your
PC/laptop and on your network. For this refer to the chapter “Mainmenu”, “Interfaces”, “Network Settings”.
Product return/original packaging
Please keep the original packaging in case you need to return the product at any time. Because of their design hard disks
are fragile, and are only adequately protected if the receiver is in its original packaging. If the receiver is not shipped
correctly the guarantee/warranty on the hard disk will be voided.
Software changes/use of applications
Any modifications to the receiver software, or the use of applications not provided by Kathrein, will invalidate the warranty!
You will have to bear the costs yourself for shipping and repairing any receiver that requires attention due to modifications
to the software and use of applications other than those provided by Kathrein!
Therefore exclusively use software and applications provided by Kathrein for your receiver. This is available by downloading
from the satellite or from the Internet (www.kathrein.de).
Fan/ventilation slots on the unit
Make sure that the fan at the rear of the unit and the ventilation slots on the unit are not blocked
or covered in any way. Otherwise the unit may overheat. Adjust the fan speed to the temperature
conditions in the receiver.
There is a risk of fire!
Instructions on how to set the fan can be found in the chapter “Mainmenu”, “Settings”, “Basic Settings”, “Fan Settings”.
Important Information
Switching the receiver off

Before you switch off the receiver using the power switch, you must switch the remote control into standby mode by
pressing the standby button (
). In standby mode, any changed or new data that is broadcast will be saved by the
receiver. Once the receiver is in standby mode it can be fully switched off at any time at the power switch on the rear of
the unit.
Do not switch the receiver off at the power switch directly from operating mode! This can lead to a
loss of data and corruption of the software.

Connecting the unit (Sat-IF connections)
Connect the Sat-IF inputs on the receiver to the satellite reception system. Use coaxial cable with an
F standard connector.
If the F standard connectors are not yet fitted on the cables, strip the insulation from the cables as
shown in the following illustration and carefully screw the F standard connectors on to the ends of
the cables until they are securely attached.
When fitting the connector, make sure that no wires from the braid are touching the inner conductor,
otherwise a short circuit will occur.
The quality of the reception signal depends on a good connection at this point!

Connection and setup
Information about antenna connection and loop-through mode
To enable you to utilise all the reception and recording features of your UFS 922 twin-PVR HDTV Sat receiver, such as
1.Recording one programme and simultaneously viewing any other programme or zapping through the channels, and
2.Recording two different programmes at the same time,
the two tuner inputs on the satellite receiver must each be supplied with a dedicated satellite signal from the antenna
system/Sat outlet.
The receiver tuner inputs are factory preset in the installation menu to work with two separate Sat antenna connections.
If you only have one antenna connection available, we recommend you interconnect the output of tuner 1 and the input of
tuner 2 using the loop-through cable supplied.
Loop-through cable
For this, in “First Installation” for tuner input 2 select
“Loopthrough” (see “First Installation” chapter).
c
Press the
button to access the “Tuner Configuration”
menu option, then select “Settings” and “First Installation”.
Go through step-by-step until you get to the tuner
configuration. You can make the settings here, However,
one restriction on this is that with tuner 2 you can only receive the additional channels from the level currently set by
tuner 1 (e.g. Horizontal High).
~
This will only work when receiving one satellite, not with multi-feed reception!
If you want to operate your UFS 922 on a one cable system, please refer to the connection example
for one cable systems (see “Technical appendix”, “Examples of one cable systems”).

TV and VCR connection
Connect the satellite receiver (HDMI or alternatively TV Scart socket) and the TV set using an HDMI or Scart cable
(see “Connection example”). If your TV is stereo, you can receive the sound in stereo via the HDMI or Scart connection.
For system reasons, the same video signals are to be found at the TV Scart socket as at the video cinch output.
Connect the satellite receiver (VCR/AUX Scart socket) to the video recorder/DVR using a Scart cable. To play back a
DVD, i.e. output the signal from the DVR through the receiver on the TV set, the TV set must also be connected to the
receiver with a Scart cable. This is necessary as there is no upscaling of the video signal from the VCR Scart socket to the
HDMI output.
If you are recording using an external video recorder, remember not to operate the receiver during
recording, otherwise all the on-screen displays will appear on your recording.
Audio connection
If you want to play the sound on your hi-fi system, connect the audio cinch sockets to the input sockets on the
hi-fi system, using an appropriate cable (see “Connection example”).
Optical digital output
The fibre-optic output is intended for the connection of a Dolby Digital system (see “Connection example”).
Inserting batteries into the remote control
Remove the cover on the rear of the remote control. Insert the two batteries supplied into the remote control.
Ensure correct polarity of the batteries; the + and – markings as indicated inside the battery compartment.
Slide the cover back on to the remote control until it locks in place.

Automatic timeshift
The UFS 922 provides a special function here. As soon as you switch to a channel, the receiver automatically starts
recording the programme you are viewing to the hard disk in the background. When you change channel again, this stored
data is deleted and background recording begins again.
This continuous background recording by the receiver offers you the following options:
- Rewind back to the time when you switched to this channel, and also fast forward up to the live signal (

- Going forward and back in 30-second steps ( buttons)
- Pause function (
If, after viewing a programme for a time, you decide you want to record it, you can do so as from the point you switched to
that channel (see “OTR”).
Precondition:
In the “Settings”, “User-Defined Settings”, “PVR Settings” menu the “Automatic timeshift” option
must be set to “On” and the “Timeshift Buffer Size” entry must allow sufficient hard disk capacity for
the timeshift recording.
Refer to the “Mainmenu”, “Settings”, “User-Defined Settings”, “PVR Settings” chapters for more information.

Recording is performed from the time since when the current channel has been watched without
interruption (option available only if automatic timeshift is activated)
Recording is performed from the present time
Recording begins at the start time entered in the “Start” line
Start:
You only need to enter the start time for a recording if you have selected the recording type “Later”.
End:
The end of the recording is determined automatically by the receiver, based on the available EPG data. If you want you
can however change this manually.
Duration:
The duration of a recording is determined automatically by the receiver, based on the start and finish times. You can
however correct the duration manually. In this case the receiver automatically adjusts the end time to correspond to the new
recording duration. The start time of the recording remains unchanged.
Decrypt:
Here you can select whether the programme should be recorded unencrypted (select “Yes”) or encrypted (select “No”)
on the hard disk.
Selecting “On” means that, depending on the setting in the “System parameters” “Common Interface” “Multiple
decoding” menu, you may not be able to view any other encrypted channels that use the same CA module for decoding
(see Chapters “System parameters” “Common Interface” “Multiple decoding”).

General information about Premium
What Premium
EPG
EPG?
Premium
EPG (referred to below just as EPG) represents the latest generation editorially prepared
programme guide. It provides all the EPG information for around 100 TV channels free of charge, without you having to
change channel, and also offers schedule information up to two weeks ahead.
Which channels are supported by EPG?
You can see in the channel list which channels are supported by the EPG (see “Basic operation in TV or Radio mode
(live operation) chapter”, “Channel selection from the channel list”. On the one hand the channels supported are
indicated by the broadcaster logos, on the other hand you have the facility of displaying a
channel list
(this is only operational only once an EPG update has been performed).
What restrictions are there with EPG?
Because of the large amount of data being transmitted, the receiver cannot store all the data for the channels supported
by EPG. Therefore the receiver configuration is factory-set to accept
data for only a limited number of
channels. Refer to “Editing channel lists”, “Editing channels (channel lists)”, “
(on/off)” for details of how to edit
this pre-configured list. The more channels are added to this list, the less
data is available for them, due to
system restrictions.
Where does the EPG data come from?
The EPG is broadcast over the ASTRA satellite at the frequency of 12,603.75 MHz, with a symbol rate of 22 MSymb/s
and horizontal polarization (18 V). If you have accidentally deleted the transponder for this frequency, you will need to
start a new satellite and transponder search for the ASTRA satellite (see “Channel Search”).
Is there any reason external to the receiver that might mean EPG does not work?
With non-Kathrein reception systems it may happen that the EPG data cannot be transmitted, because the necessary
transponder (12,603.75 MHz, symbol rate 22 MSymb/s, horizontal) is not transmitted by that system.
What about EPG data for broadcasters that are not broadcast using ASTRA?
For broadcasters that broadcast using the “HOTBIRD 13° East” satellite you must perform an additional channel search
using that satellite.
You will only see information on the current or subsequent programmes in the EPG if this data is
supplied/transmitted by
or by the channel provider. If no EPG data is available, the receiver
shows the message “No data available” instead of showing information on the current program.
56
Premium
EPG
The
data is not available immediately after first installation. The
data is only
updated/loaded after the first EPG update at night or the first time you switch the receiver to
standby mode.

The EPG is opened by pressing the

Important Information
Always follow the operating instructions from your Pay-TV provider and the instructions supplied
with the Smartcard and the CA module!
Smartcards and CA modules are not included with this product!
The cards and modules are issued by the respective pay TV providers, and contain the subscriber
data and details of the channels for which the subscriber has paid. These channels are always
scrambled.
Contact the Pay TV provider if you are interested in subscribing to a particular Pay TV channel.
You are responsible for the use of the Smartcard in the CA!
The Smartcard sold by the pay TV provider, specific to a particular encryption technology, is inserted
into the CA module.
Store your card and PIN code securely when not in use!

Multiple decryption

If your CA module is capable of decrypting multiple channels, you can press the
buttons to select whether
the module should always decrypt only one channel (Off) or multiple channels simultaneously (On). This function is
optimised for “AlphaCrypt” modules and may lead to malfunctions with other modules.
If you select “Off”, when making an unencrypted recording of an encrypted channel you cannot at the same time view
any other encrypted channel through the same CA module and the currently selected transponder.
If you select “On”, when recording an encrypted channel you can at the same time view any other encrypted channel
through the same CA module and the currently selected transponder. The number of other encrypted channels
that you can view depends on the CA module you are using.
Furthermore if you select “On” you can at the same time make two encrypted recordings on the same transponder.
Two-fold CA decryption
Your UFS 922 receiver offers you the facility of viewing channels from the two different CA modules simultaneously.
Note:
This function cannot be guaranteed for all CA module combinations.
Information for Conax, SECA, Viaccess and CryptoWorks users:
Note that with monthly activation intervals, the channel providers have different procedures
for activating pay TV cards. Activation may therefore be a few days before or after the
beginning of a new month. During this activation period, the CA module and card must
be in the slot, and the receiver must be turned on a set to the booked Pay TV channel.
Follow the instructions from the pay TV provider.
If your pay TV card is then still not enabled, we recommend you briefly withdraw the CA module
with the card out of the slot, with the receiver switched on, and then re-insert it.
This information has nothing to do with the properties of the receiver; it is merely intended to assist you.

Software update via the front USB port 165
If you have misplaced your remote control, or if the batteries are flat, you can still operate your receiver from the front
panel.
Backup operation
The front panel houses four buttons and the multifunction control (from now on referred to as “the control”).
Record button:
Press the Record button to start a manual recording. The receiver also allows you start a second recording.
Stop button:
The Stop button allows you to stop the current recordings. The stop always applies to the first recording to be started.
AUX button:
If an external device is connected to the VCR Scart socket, the TV signal present at the VCR Scart socket can be looped
through to the TV Scart socket. Pressing the AUX button more than once toggles between the TV Scart mode and
the VCR Scart loop-through mode.
TV/R button:
You can change between the TV and the radio mode using the TV/R button.
Multifunction control:
By pressing the centre button of the control you can toggle between the two displays “List” and “Volume” on the receiver
display. The function that is active lights up.
If the “List” display is lit up, the multifunction control can only switch between channels.
If the “Volume” display is lit up, the multifunction control can only adjust the volume.
After the receiver is switched off and on again, the last function to be selected is active.
Because there are no numbered buttons, no password/PIN-protected functions can be displayed.
164
Operation from the front panel (without remote control)
Software update via the front USB port
A pre-requirement for the update via a USB device is an empty USB device (such as a USB
stick), formatted as FAT32, containing only the operating software or channel list to be loaded.
It is essential that the operating software to be loaded is stored on the USB device under
the following directory structure: Main folder:
kathrein
Subfolder:
∟
ufs922
You can also download the updates from the Internet. The address is: http://www.kathrein.de
You will find the software at “Service” → “Software and Download” → “Receiver” → “UFS 922”
Performing the software update
1.Use the remote control to switch the receiver into standby mode
2.Switch on the receiver at the main switch at the rear of the unit
3.Now connect your USB device (with the new operating software, in the required directory structure) to the receiver,
using the USB port on the front panel of the receiver
4.Keep the AUX button pressed, and switch the receiver on again, using the main switch at the rear of the unit
The following display appears: USB Emergency UP
Once the receiver has displayed this text you can let go the AUX button. The receiver will then automatically perform
the steps described below:
- Load Script File
- Wait: USB Load
- Done: xxxxxx RD
- Check Update File
- (1/x) Er yyy (x=number of updates found on the USB device/yyy= progress display from 1-100)
- (1/x) Wr yyy (x=number of updates found on the USB device/yyy= progress display from 1-100)
The receiver now performs the update and starts in the last selected operating mode.
You can now disconnect the USB device from the receiver.
165
Troubleshooting
In the event of a malfunction, first check all the cable connections and operating states:
1. Receiver and TV set power plugs are connected to wall socket
2. Antenna cables are connected to the receiver input
3. Receiver and TV set are correctly connected to each other by a HDMI or Scart or cinch cable
4. Audio connections are made to the Hi-Fi or Dolby Digital system as appropriate
5. Receiver and TV set (Hi-Fi/Dolby Digital system) are switched on (check power indicators)
6. Receiver is responding to remote control

ASTRA
SES (Société Européene des Satellites) satellite system.
Analogue and digital transponders in the frequency range
10.7-12.75 GHz.
AV programme pos.
Preferred programme slot on TV set for external
connections such as Scart and HDMI
CAM – Conditional Access Module
Decryption decoder, which uses a smart card to decrypt
the encrypted radio and TV signals.
Channel package
The channel package for a digital transponder
normally includes several TV and radio channels.
Each channel package has a fixed assignment for the
transponder transmission frequency, for polarization
(horizontal or vertical), for the symbol rate and for the
Viterbi rate or error rate.
CI - Common Interface
Internationally standardised interface for CA modules
Conditional Access (CA) system
Controls user access to services and programmes which
are encrypted for reasons of copyright or for commercial
reasons.
Data rate
Data bits transmitted per second. Is expressed in kbit/s or
Mbit/s. The higher the data rate the better the quality of the
transmitted signal.
Data reduction
Compression of video and audio signals. Redundant
information is discarded.
DiSEqC™
DiSEqC™ (Digital Satellite Equipment Control) is a
communication system between a satellite receiver
(master) and the peripheral satellite components (slaves),
such as LNBs, multi-switches, rotating antenna systems.
It is a single master/multi-slave system, i.e. there is only
ever one master in the satellite system. All activities start
from the master.
DiSEqC™ components
If DiSEqC™ switching matrices are cascaded, the master
receiver must transmit the DiSEqC™ signal several times,
so that all DiSEqC™ multi-switches in the cascade receive
their commands.
These days, DiSEqC™ components (slaves) must be
downward compatible, i.e. respond to the analogue
switching criteria from receivers that are only equipped
with H/V and 22 kHz control signals.
A DiSEqC™ switching matrix will work with analogue
switching criteria until the DiSEqC™ command from the
master is received. All analogue switching criteria are then
ignored.
Dolby Digital 5.1
Dolby Digital is a sound transmission that allows digital
surround sound to be output on a home cinema system.
DVB - Digital Video Broadcasting
DVB-S refers to the transmission method (S = satellite,
C = cable, T = terrestrial).
DVB-S2
An enhanced DVB-S signal for HDTV with better quality.
Eb/No ratio
The Eb/No ratio is a measure of the signal to noise ratio of
a digital signal. The value is not identical to the C/N value
familiar from analogue reception technology. At Eb/No
values below 5 dB no reception is normally possible.
EUTELSAT
European Satellite operator, based in Paris. Many orbit
positions and European customers. Transponders in the
frequency range 10.7-12.75 GHz.
FEC
FEC is the abbreviation for Forward Error Correction.
A technique for reducing the error rate of data
transmission. Additional bits are inserted into the data
stream, so that error-correction algorithms can be used on
reception. The FEC error rate corresponds to the Viterbi
rate.
HD – Ready
This is a label created by the EICTA (European Information,
Communications and Consumer Electronics Industry
Technology Association) for equipment that is capable of
reproducing HDTV.
HDCP – High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection
Encryption system which protects the HDMI and DVI
interfaces for secure transmission of video and audio
data. HDCP should be used in Europe for HDTV standard
transmissions.
179
Brief Technical Glossary
HDMI – High Definition Multimedia Interface
Digital interface for digital video and audio data
transmission (preferred for HDTV).
HDTV – High Definition Television
High resolution television with a resolution up to 5 times
higher or finer than PAL or NTSC. However, there is
no compatibility, as the transmission process DVB-S2
and the compression technique MPEG4 are used for
broadcasting.
The principal features of HDTV are the larger picture format
(16:9), the doubled number of scanning lines (increased
from the currently 625 to 1,250) and digital sound quality.
High band
Satellite frequency range between 11.7 GHz and
12.75 GHz.
H.264
Another designation for MPEG-4.
LNB - Low Noise Block Converter
Converts the satellite downlink frequencies into the Sat-IF
for the first satellite.
Low band
Satellite frequency range between 10.7 GHz and
11.7 GHz.
MPEG-2
MPEG is the abbreviation for Moving Picture Experts
Group, a working group that formulates internationally
applicable standards for the digital compression of video
and audio. MPEG-2 has become established as the
standard for compression of digital TV signals. MPEG-2
works up to a data rate of 100 Mbit/s.
MPEG-4
A further development of MPEG-2 with even higher data
compression, intended for HDTV transmissions.
NID
The channel identification number is also referred to as
the Network ID or NID.
OSD – On-Screen Display
Displays by the receiver on the TV screen (e.g. main
menu)
PAL
Analogue TV standard
Pay TV
Television channels available on subscription (e.g.
PREMIERE). Encrypted transmitters which can only be
decrypted by using the appropriate smart card. As a rule
these services are subscription-only.
180
PCMCIA
Standard for internal decoder interface for pay-TV
PID
The PID (Packet IDentification) number is an identification
number for video signals and audio signals in the digital
data stream of DVB-MPEG -2 signals. The receiver
uses the PID number to create a unique assignment for
the video and audio data transmission. The PCR PID is
the identification number for the synchronization signal.
The PID-PCR is normally identical to the video PID. For
programmes broadcast in multiple languages, the audio
PD can be entered manually to assign a different language
to the TV programme. After the PID is entered, the digital
receiver automatically selects the audio data identified by
the PID number from the data stream and assigns it to the
video signal.
PIN
Personal Identification Number. For this unit the PIN is a
4-digit numeric code which must be entered to unlock the
unit to allow access to certain functions and channels.
QAM - Quadrature-Amplitude-Modulation
Digital modulation process with phase shift keying, which
is used for transmissions in cable networks.
QPSK - Quadrature Phase Shift Keying
Digital modulation process that is used for satellite
transmission (8PSK is also used in connection with
HDTV).
Receivers
Satellite receiver
RGB
Video signal made up of three individual colour signals
(red, green, blue)
SAT IF signal
Receiver input signal
Scart cable
21-pin connecting cable (e.g. receiver/TV)
Smart card

Transponder
A transponder is a frequency converter which receives TV
and radio signals broadcast from the earth, converts them
and the rebroadcasts them back to the earth at a different
frequency. A satellite has several transponders.
Analogue transponders transmit only one TV channel and
possibly multiple radio channels on a single transmission
frequency.
Digital transponders simultaneously transmit several
TV and several radio programmes on a transmission
frequency. If a programme provider is broadcasting
several TV channels via a digital transponder, we
refer to the provider's channel package. The terms
“digital transponder” and “channel package” have
the same meaning.
