General Information
Introduction
This user guide contains information on the unpacking, preparation,
installation, operation and maintenance of the Thermo Scientific Orion
AutoTration-500 autosampler. The autosampler is compatible with the
960 titrator Titrator PLUS system, enhanced Star Plus benchtop meters
and Orion 162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 862A benchtop meters.
The AutoTration-500 autosampler is an XYZ robotic system that is
designed to automate laboratory calibration and analysis procedures.
The autosampler offers the flexibility of either a 48-position rack for 50
mL beakers or a 28-position rack for 150 mL beakers. The racks are
interchangeable and can be easily replaced, so samples can be collected and
prepared anywhere and safely brought to the autosampler for analysis. The
danger of confusing sample beakers and the need for the time-consuming
marking of samples are eliminated.
The 960 titrator or benchtop meter controls all autosampler operations and
monitors the autosampler performance. Any issue with the autosampler
performance results in an error message being displayed on the 960 titrator
or benchtop meter display. Sample analysis methods can be programmed
and saved in the 960 titrator and all techniques, except HELP, are available.
The 960 titrator can be programmed for zero to five rinse beakers and up
to 45 sample beakers, depending on the beaker rack configuration. The
enhanced Star Plus meters can be programmed for one to five rinse beakers
and up to 47 sample beakers, depending on the beaker rack configuration.
The Orion 162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 862A benchtop meters can
be programmed for three rinse beakers and up to 42 sample beakers,
depending on the beaker rack configuration. The 960 titrator and Orion
162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 862A benchtop meters can only use the first
45 beaker positions on the autosampler. The enhanced Star Plus meters
can use all 48 beaker positions on the autosampler.
During rinse sequences, the electrodes and stirrer probe are completely
immersed in the rinse solution, which ensures optimal rinsing and improves
data quality.

Packing List
The AutoTration-500 autosampler is shipped with an accessory kit that
includes the items needed to properly prepare and install the unit. The
AT5050 and AT5150 contain accessories specific to the beaker and rack
configuration. The AT5050 includes the 48-position rack, 50 mL beakers
and the small electrode holder for 50 mL beakers. The AT5150 includes
the 28-position rack, 150 mL beakers and the standard electrode holder for
150 mL beakers. The AT5050 and AT5150 include a spare PEEK tubing
assembly for the Z-drive.

Chapter 2
This chapter includes instructions for the installation of the autosampler.
The autosampler is a delicate, precision aligned instrument that requires
gentle handling. Failure to follow these directions may void the warranty
and result in damage to the instrument.
Unpacking the
Autosampler
Upon receipt of the autosampler, carefully examine the contents of the
shipping carton for any evidence of mishandling. If the inspection reveals
damage, breakage or distortion of any component, promptly notify the
carrier. In case of shipping damage, notify the carrier immediately or
within ten days of delivery. The carrier claim periods may vary. Be sure to
retain all shipping materials for claim verification.
Removing Items from the
Shipping Carton
The following instructions describe how to remove the autosampler from
the shipping carton. Be sure to save all shipping materials in case the unit
needs to be shipped for service at a later date.
1. Open the shipping carton by carefully cutting the sealing tape on the
top of the carton. Cut along the two edges and down the center line of
the box. Open the flaps of the carton.
2. The autosampler is protected by two foam pads, one on the either side
of the autosampler.
3. Remove the small box that is packaged on top of the autosampler.
Remove the accessory bag from the side of the autosampler.
4. Lift the autosampler from the carton by holding the sides of the case.
Do not lift the autosampler by the arm assembly, as this will damage
the unit. Place the autosampler on a flat, level surface.
5. Remove the autosampler from the plastic bag. Remove all the tape
securing the plastic bag. Loosen the large bag that covers the entire
unit, carefully remove the autosampler from the bag and place it on a
flat, level surface.
6. Carefully open the accessory bag and remove the accessory kit used to
install the autosampler.

7. The drip tray is capable of holding either the 28-position or 48-position
beaker rack. In the base of the tray are alignment pins that fit with the
mounting holes on the bottom of the racks.

8. The drip tray fits onto the autosampler through the use of two locating
pins on the base of the autosampler. These pins fit in the two holes in
the bottom of the drip tray. When the drip tray is properly installed,
the tray should be flush with the right edge of the autosampler case and
flush with the arm assembly support section of the case.

Z-Drive Assembly
Installation
The Z-drive assembly must be attached to the autosampler arm to allow
movement and function of the sample electrodes. Install the Z-drive
assembly before powering on the unit.
Note: Before inserting any power or communication cords, position the
autosampler to allow access to the rear of the unit.
1. Remove the Z-axis assembly from its shipping box, ensuring that you
do not pinch the long tubing that is attached to the top of the Z-axis.
Remove the protective cover over the black homing tab and the tie wrap
that prevents the Z-slider from moving during shipment.
2. Find the small bag containing two white thumb screws from the
accessories bag shipped with the autosampler and remove the white
thumb screws from the bag.
3. Slide the new Z-stage assembly onto the arm with the black homing
tab facing the back housing of the autosampler. Lift the PEEK spacers,
as pictured on the left, to get the new Z-stage assembly onto the black
mounting block.
4. Use the thumbscrew to locate the hole closest to the tab and tighten the
screw. Insert and tighten the second screw.
5. Loosen, but do not remove the thumbscrew as pictured on the left.
6. Install the mounting block on the right side of the rotor as pictured on
the left. Note the positioning of the PEEK tubing on the left side of
the thumb screws. The tubing should go straight into the mounting
block.

7. Gently thread the PEEK tubing between the rotor and plastic staider
guide and then push it through the other side as pictured on the left.
Ensure the PEEK tubing is routed in the groove of the rotor as pictured
on the right.
8. Apply tension to the PEEK tubing until the Z-slider is 1/2” below the
top of travel as pictured on the left.
9. Clamp the PEEK tubing in place by tightening the thumb screw on the
rotor. This thumb screw is pictured in step 6.
10.Install the cable management system on the autosampler.
11.Install the electrode holder, electrodes and thread cables.
12.Apply power to the unit and let it return to home position.
13.Adjust the electrodes to the proper sample level so they do not hit the
bottom of the beaker.
14.If necessary, trim the Z-stage home flag with side cutters until the
sample probes are centered over the sample cup as pictured on the left.
Trim the flag in 1/16” increments or smaller.
15.Reattach the communication cabling.
Note: The Z-axis PEEK drive tubing may stretch over time. Adjust it as
necessary.
For instructions on how to replace the PEEK tubing, refer to the
Recommended Maintenance section.

Beaker Rack and
Electrode Holder
Installation
1. Place the appropriate beaker rack on the drip tray with the beveled edge
facing towards the back, left-hand side of the autosampler.
2. Secure the electrode holder onto the autosampler arm by adjusting the
thumbscrews finger tight.
3. The position of the electrode holders can be adjusted so the electrodes
move lower into the sample beakers, which allows for smaller sample
sizes to be measured.

Electrode Holder for the High
Performance Ammonia ISE
Use the high performance ammonia electrode holder, Cat. No. AS0050,
whenever the Thermo Scientific Orion high performance ammonia
electrode, Cat. No. 9512HPBNWP or 9512HP01, is used on the
autosampler. This electrode holder allows the stirrer probe, Cat. No.
096019, to be positioned directly below the electrode, which results in
faster electrode response time and more reproducible readings. The stirrer
must be placed in the one angled position of the electrode holder. .
Interchanging Beaker Racks
and Beakers
The autosampler is supplied with either a 48-position beaker rack for
50 mL beakers and 10 to 45 mL sample volumes or a 28-position beaker
rack for 150 mL beakers and 80 to 120 mL sample volumes.
• To convert a 28-position beaker rack to a 48-position rack, the
following items are required: 48-position rack, Cat. No. ATR050;
50 mL beakers, Cat. No. ASB050; and small electrode holder,
Cat. No. AT0050.
• To convert a 48-position beaker rack to a 28-position rack, the
following items are required: 28-position rack, Cat. No. ATR150;
150 mL beakers, Cat. No. ASB150; and standard electrode holder,
Cat. No. AT0STD.
Extra racks may be used so samples for the autosampler run can be
prepared while the current sample batch is being analyzed. To exchange
racks between batches, lift the rack off of the autosampler and replace with
a new rack. If a different size rack is used, the 960 titrator or benchtop
meter setup parameters for the autosampler must be changed.
The sample beakers provided with the autosampler are designed to fit the
autosampler properly should be used at all times. The 45 mL beakers,
Cat. No. 096S22, and 50 mL beakers, Cat. No. ASB050, are designed for
the 48-position beaker rack. The 150 mL beakers, Cat. No. ASB150, are
designed for the 28-position beaker rack.

Management
Installation
Secure the cable management system to the rear of the autosampler case
with the two thumb screws. Feed the electrode cables and dispenser tubes
through the arm of the cable management system. Leave enough slack in
the tubing and cables to reach all corners of the autosampler. Stick the
cable clamps to the rear panel for additional cable management.

Panel Setup
This section describes the location and operation of the items on the front
and back panels of the autosampler. This includes the power switch, power
cord receptacle and serial communications ports.

Drip Tray
Power Indication LED– The green power indicator light, located directly
above the power switch, will be illuminated when the power is turned on
and indicates that power is being supplied to the unit.
Power Switch– The main power switch for the autosampler is located on
the rear panel of the autosampler. Press the button to turn the autosampler
on or off.
Before removing obstructions from the sample tray area, press the power
switch to shut off the autosampler. Obstruction in the movement of the
arm will damage the unit and the attached electrodes. When the power
switch is turned on, the autosampler will automatically align itself to the
home position. This operation will raise the electrode holder up, move
the arm to the left side of the autosampler and move the electrode holder
towards the rear of the autosampler. When the unit is in this position, it
has initialized correctly.

Back Panel Setup
Power– AC power input to autosampler.
COM1– RS232 port (9 pin male) that is used to connect the autosampler
with a 960 titrator or benchtop meter. The 960 titrator or benchtop meter
must be configured for a 1200 baud rate data input.
COM2– RS232 port (9 pin male) that is used to connect the autosampler
to a printer (when using a benchtop meter only). The printer must be
configured for a 9600 baud rate data input.
• Use the printer cable, Cat. No. 223664-001, to connect the Star
printer, Cat. No. 1010006, to the autosampler.
• Use the printer cable, Cat. No. 223664-001, to connect the PRT300
printer, Cat. No. PRT300 or PRT301, to the autosampler. The
PRT300 dip switch settings need to be manually configured for a 9600
baud rate input. PRT300 dip switch numbers 1, 3 and 8 should be set
to OFF (down) and 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 should be set to ON (up).
Stirrer Jack– Stirrer probe input (for use with a benchtop meter only, the
960 titrator uses the dispensing tower to power the stirrer probe).
Autosampler Dip Switch Settings– Dip switch numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 are
OFF (up) and 4 is ON (down) on the autosampler.

Interface Cables
The COM1 male DB-9 RS232 serial port (bottom RS232 port on the back
of the autosampler) is the main communications port of the autosampler to
the 960 titrator or benchtop meter.
• COM1 Port to 960 Titrator or Auxiliary Dispenser–
To communicate with a 960 titrator, connect the 960 titrator interface
cable, Cat. No. ATCBL1, from the COM1 port on the autosampler to
the RS232 computer port on the 960 titrator or last auxiliary dispenser.
• COM1 Port to Enhanced Star Plus Meters–
To communicate with an enhanced Star Plus meter, connect the
enhanced Star Plus meter interface cable, Cat. No. 254210-001,
from the COM1 port on the autosampler to the RS232 port on the
enhanced Star Plus meter.
• COM1 Port to 162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 862A Meters–
To communicate with a benchtop meter, connect the 9 pin female
to 9 pin female tan-colored interface cable that is included with the
autosampler from the COM1 port on the autosampler to the RS232
port on the benchtop meter.
The COM2 male DB-9 RS232 serial port (top RS232 port on the back of
the autosampler) is the accessory communications port of the autosampler
to a printer when an enhanced Star Plus benchtop meter or Orion 162A,
535A, 550A, 555A and 862A benchtop meter is being used.
Note: Do not connect a printer to the autosampler when using a 960
titrator. The 960 titrator uses an accessory RS232 port on the 960 titrator
to connect to a printer.
• COM2 Port to Printer– For enhanced Star Plus benchtop meters and
Orion 162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 862A benchtop meters only. To
connect the autosampler to a printer that has a 9600 baud rate, connect
the printer interface cable, Cat. No. 223664-001, from the COM2 port
on the autosampler to the Star printer or PRT300 printer.

Note: The 960 titrator must have a software revision level of 6.0 or greater.
If the 960 titrator does not have this level of software, contact Technical
Support. Within the United States call 1.800.225.1480 and outside the
United States call 978.232.6000 or fax 978.232.6031. In Europe, the
Middle East and Africa, contact your local authorized dealer.
1. Connect the 960 titrator interface cable, Cat. No. ATCBL1, supplied
with the autosampler to the 960 titrator and the autosampler. Firmly
secure the cable to both connections.
Note: If auxiliary dispensers are used, connect the autosampler to the
RS232 port on the last auxiliary dispenser.
2. Connect the stirrer extension cable from the stirrer probe to the stirrer
jack on the rear of the 960 titrator tower.
3. Insert the stirrer probe, electrodes and dispenser probe into the
electrode holder.
4. Feed the cables and dispenser tubing through the cable management
system. Leave enough slack in the cables and tubing so they reach all
corners of the autosampler.

Operating the 960 Titrator
with the Autosampler
Writing a Method on the
960 Titrator
When the autosampler is connected to the 960 titrator and defined in the
accessories menu of the 960 titrator, the autosampler is totally controlled by
the 960 titrator.
Methods are written on the 960 titrator and saved in the memory as
usual. Any method, using any technique (except HELP) may be used with
the autosampler. Simply request the saved method number and the 960
titrator and autosampler will automatically perform that method.
After the appropriate analytical methods have been written and saved, the
procedure for using the autosampler must be written. Select the method
number to be used, the electrodes rinsing parameters and the number of
samples to be analyzed and enter sample weights and sample ID numbers.
The procedure for rinsing the electrodes and stirrer probe between samples
is flexible. Depending on the relative cleanliness of the sample and the
beaker rack configuration, zero to five rinse beakers maybe used. Each
rinse involves the electrodes and stirrer probe being immersed in a beaker
of distilled water, or other appropriate solution, for a specified period of
time. The rinse time may be set from 1 to 180 seconds. The number
and duration of required rinses depends on the sample type and analytical
technique. As a general rule, one rinse is recommended for endpoint
analysis and GAP analysis and two rinses are recommended for KAP
analysis because of the high ion concentration. If analyzing very small
samples, add one extra rinse beaker. A rinse time of 10 seconds is usually
adequate. As a check for carry over, the mV reading in the rinse beaker is
recorded after each rinse. When setting up the sample tray, the first beaker
positions are used for rinse beakers. For example; if two rinse beakers are
requested with a 28-position sample rack, beaker positions 1 and 2 will be
used as rinse beakers.
The autosampler is supplied with either a 28-position or 48-position
sample rack. The beaker sizes that correspond with these racks are 150 mL
and 50 mL. Racks are also sold separately to accommodate flexibility for
different analysis methods. To change to a different rack, lift off the rack
from drip tray and replace with another rack ready to be analyzed. Any
number of samples, less the requested number of rinses, may be analyzed in
one run. The autosampler can be instructed to start at any available beaker
position.
Note: To pause the autosampler during an analysis, hold the pause key
on the 960 titrator. Select the standby mode to stop the analysis. The
autosampler will not pause when the 960 titrator is taking a mV reading.
Pause the autosampler during the pre-stir or when the titrant is added to
the sample.

Use of Accessories
with the 960 Titrator and
Autosampler
The 960 titrator and autosampler are not affected by the use of other
accessories, with the exception of auxiliary dispensers and computers.
Auxiliary dispensers can be used with the 960 titrator to dispense additional
reagents with any given method. For each method, it is very important that
the initial setup be performed in the instrument setup menu of the 960
titrator. In this case, the autosampler is not directly connected to the 960
titrator. Connect the RS232 cable supplied with the autosampler to the
RS232 input on the last auxiliary dispenser interfaced to the 960 titrator.
All other operations remain the same.
Remember which dispenser is being used with the autosampler and write
the methods carefully. The auxiliary dispenser requires the designation of
a location number to identify each dispenser to the 960 titrator program.
The 960 titrator base unit is always designated as the primary dispenser or
location #1, the first auxiliary dispenser as location # 2 and so on up to the
maximum of nine locations. Set the location number on the bottom of the
dispenser by pointing the arrow on the screw to the desired number.
Computer control of the 960 titrator and autosampler system is not
possible. However, using a computer to collect data from the 960
titrator printer RS232 port is possible and will not affect the autosampler
operation.

Interfacing the Enhanced
Star Plus Meters with
the Autosampler
1. Interface the autosampler with the benchtop meter. Use the
autosampler to enhanced Star Plus meter interface cable, Cat. No.
254210-001, to connect the 2.5 mm phono jack RS232 port on the
meter to the COM1 RS232 port on the autosampler.
2. If the Star printer will be used, use the autosampler to printer interface
cable, Cat. No. 223664-001, to connect the COM2 RS232 port on the
autosampler to the 25 pin female RS232 port on the printer.
Note: The printer must have a 9600 baud rate to be connected to the
autosampler. The Star printer, Cat. No. 1010006, is recommended for use
with the enhanced Star Plus meter and autosampler system.
3. Prepare and install the electrodes. Prepare the electrodes according
to the electrode user guides. Connect the electrodes to the back of
the meter using the extension cables and cable management system
provided with the autosampler. Insert the electrodes into the electrode
holder on the autosampler. If a stirrer probe will be used, connect the
stirrer probe to the stirrer jack on the back of the autosampler and then
insert the stirrer probe into the electrode holder on the autosampler.
Note: The minimum required cable length to operate with the autosampler
is 6.25 feet (1.9 meters). Extension cables or electrodes with an appropriate
cable length are needed.
4. Turn on the power to the meter, autosampler and printer.

Meter Preparation
In the measurement mode, change each display line to the desired
parameter and blank any unneeded lines.
•Press the line select key to choose the top, middle or bottom display
line. The arrow icon will point to the selected line.
•Press the up arrow key to change the measured parameter on the
selected display line. If no measurements are required for the
parameters shown on the display line, press the up arrow key until the
line is blank.
Enhanced Star Plus Meter

To Navigate the Enhanced Star
Plus Meter Setup Menu
In the setup menu, review and change the setup parameters for basic meter
functions and autosampler functions. The first time the meter is prepared
for use with the autosampler, confirm all of the following applicable setup
menus. As long as the meter remains connected to a power supply, the
setup parameters do not need to be reprogrammed. To prevent the meter
from losing the programmed setup parameters in the event of a power
failure, install four AA Alkaline batteries in the back of the meter.
1. Press the setup key to enter the setup menu.
2. Press the up arrow key until the desired setup option is displayed on
the top line.
3. Press the line select key to move the arrow icon to the middle line.
4. Press the up arrow key until the desired setup option is displayed on
the middle line.
5. Press the line select key to move the arrow icon to the bottom line.
6. For fixed setup parameters, press the up arrow key until the desired
value is displayed on the bottom line. For setup parameters with
multiple values, enter the desired value on the bottom line by pressing
the up/down arrow keys to adjust each digit and the digits key to
move to the next digit.
7. Press the line select key to move the arrow icon to the top line.
8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 to program a new setup parameter or press
the measure key to exit the setup menu and return to the measurement
mode.

Enhanced Star Plus Meter
Basic Setup Parameters
If a pH electrode will be calibrated on the autosampler,
select the buffer set that will be used for automatic
calibration. The USA buffer set includes pH buffers
1.68, 4.01, 7.00, 10.01, and 12.46. The EUrO buffer set
includes pH buffers 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, and 9.18.
If an ISE electrode will be calibrated on the autosampler,
select the ISE units that will be used for calibration and
analysis. The available ISE units are PPb (parts per billion),
nOnE (no units displayed), m (molar), mgL (milligrams per
liter) and PEr (percent). The mgL units are equivalent to
parts per million (ppm).
If a conductivity cell will be calibrated on the autosampler,
enter the nominal cell constant of the conductivity cell for
automatic calibration.
Set the read type on the meter to AUTO-READ.
Turn the automatic datalogging feature On or OFF.
Turn the datalog delete feature to nO or YES. If nO is
selected, the data will remain in the meter’s memory after
the datalog is sent to a computer or printer. Once the
maximum number of data points is reached, the meter will
erase the oldest data point and replace it with the new point.
If YES is selected, the data will be deleted after the datalog is
sent to a computer or printer. Once the maximum number
of data points is reached, the meter will display the Err 038
error message, which indicates that the datalog must be sent
to a computer or printer before additional data points can
be stored.
If a stirrer probe will be used, set the stirrer speed. The
stirrer speed can be set from one to seven or OFF.
Turn the meter auto-shutoff feature OFF.
Set the date and time on the meter. Enter the current hour
in 24 hour format.

Select the displayed date format as mdY (month, day,
year) or dmY (day, month, year).

Select the beaker tray that will be used. Either the 28
beaker or 48 beaker tray can be selected.
Enter the number of rinse beakers. One to five rinse
beakers can be used.
Enter the electrode rinse time in each rinse beaker. The
rinse time can be set from five to sixty seconds.
If a pH electrode will be calibrated on the autosampler,
enter the number of pH calibration points. Zero to
three points can be selected. The meter must perform
an automatic calibration when calibrating on the
autosampler, so only pH buffers included in the buffer set
selected in the setup menu can be used.
If an ORP electrode will be calibrated on the autosampler,
turn the ORP calibration feature on by selecting YES.
The meter must perform an automatic calibration when
calibrating on the autosampler, so only the Thermo
Scientific Orion ORP standard can be used.
If an ISE electrode will be calibrated on the autosampler,
enter the number of ISE calibration points. Zero, two
or three points can be selected. Once the number of
ISE calibration points is selected, enter the calibration
standard values in the setup menu. Press the line select
key twice to move the arrow icon to the middle line and
then press the up arrow key to display the first standard
value. Press the line select key to move the arrow icon
to the top line and enter the value of the first standard
by pressing the up/down arrow keys to adjust each digit
and the digits key to move to the next digit. Repeat this
procedure for the second and third standard values. Press
the line select key twice to move the arrow icon to the
middle line and then press the up arrow key to display the
next setup parameter.

If a conductivity cell will be calibrated on the autosampler,
enter the number of conductivity calibration points.
Zero to three points can be selected. The meter must
perform an automatic calibration when calibrating on the
autosampler, so only the Thermo Scientific Orion 100 µS/
cm, 1413 µS/cm, and 12.9 mS/cm standards can be used.
Enter the total number of sample beakers to be measured.
Do not include rinse beakers, calibration beakers or empty
beakers.
Note: The Err 005 error message indicates that a bad value was entered.
Press the measure key to return to the setup menu and check the allowed
value range.

Operating the
Enhanced Star Plus
Meter and Autosampler
1. Prepare the samples, beakers and trays.
The first one to five beakers are used as rinse beakers,
depending on the number of rinse beakers selected
in the setup menu. The next zero to three beakers
are used as pH, ORP or ISE calibration beakers,
depending on the type of calibration and number of
beakers selected in the setup menu. The next zero
to three beakers are used as conductivity calibration
beakers, depending on the number of beakers selected
in the setup menu.
2. Press the measure key to initialize the autosampler.
3. The autosampler will move the electrodes to the rinse
beaker(s) for the time specified in the setup menu.
4. The autosampler will move the electrodes to the
sample beaker and the meter will take a measurement.
5. The actual measurements will be shown on the
display. If a stirrer probe is in use, the stirrer
probe will automatically begin stirring when the
measurement starts and end stirring when all
measurement parameters are stable. When a stable
reading for all parameters is achieved, the reading
will be saved in the datalog and/or sent to a printer
or computer, depending on what was selected in the
setup menu.
6. The autosampler will move the electrodes to the rinse
beaker(s) for the time specified in the setup menu,
move the electrodes to the next sample beaker and
then the meter will take a new measurement.
Note: To stop the autosampler in the middle of analysis, press the setup key
to enter the setup menu. Press the up arrow key until AUtO is displayed
on top line. Press the line select key until the arrow icon points to the
middle line and press the up arrow key until SAPL is displayed. Press the
line select key until the arrow icon points to the bottom line and press
the up arrow key until OFF is displayed. Press the line select key until
the arrow icon points to the top line. Press the measure key to return to
measurement mode.

Enhanced Star Plus Meter
Method Setup
The enhanced Star Plus meters can save up to 10 methods when the GLP
function is enabled. Use a different method number for each electrode
that shares a common connection. For example, use method 1 for a pH
electrode and method 2 for an ORP electrode. Connect the electrode,
select a method number and then calibrate the electrode. When the
method is selected, the meter will use the last calibration performed in
that method, so electrodes can be interchanged without recalibrating
every time the electrodes are switched. The meter setup parameters
for the autosampler are not method specific. Meter setup parameters
for the autosampler must be updated if the method is changed and the
autosampler needs to be run differently.
1. To enable the GLP function: In the measurement mode, press the
setup key. Press the up arrow key until gLP is displayed on top line.
Press the line select key until the arrow icon points to the middle line
and press the up arrow key until SEt is displayed. Press the line select
key until the arrow icon points to the bottom line and press the up
arrow key until On is displayed. Press the line select key until the
arrow icon points to the top line. Press the measure key to save the
parameter and return to measurement mode.
2. To display the current method number, press the setup key.
3. To change the method number: Display the current method number
and then press the up/down arrow keys to select a new method
number. Press the setup key to save the method number and then press
the measure key to return to the measurement mode.

Enhanced Star Plus Meter
Datalog and Calibration Log
All 3-Star Plus and the 4-Star Plus ISE meters have a 1000 point datalog.
The 4-Star Plus pH/conductivity and pH/DO meters have a 750 point
datalog. The 5-Star Plus meters have a 500 point datalog.
To view the datalog or calibration log:
1. In the measurement mode, press the log view key.
2. Press the up arrow key to select vIEw to display the datalog or CALv to
display the calibration log.
3. Press the log view key. The meter will display the date/time screen.
The log number will be on the top of the screen and the time, date and
year the log was recorded will be on the top, middle and bottom display
lines respectively. Press the up/down arrow keys to scroll through the
log.
4. Press the log view key. The meter will display the data or calibration
point associated with the selected date/time screen. Press the measure
key to print the individual data point, press the up/down arrow keys to
scroll through the log or press the log view key to return to the date/
time screen.
5. To exit the log view mode, press the log view key until the meter
displays the date/time screen and then press the measure key.
To send the datalog or calibration log to a printer or computer:
1. In the measurement mode, press the log view key.
2. Press the up arrow key to select SEnd to print the datalog or CALS to
print the calibration log.
3. Press the log view key to send the selected data to a printer or
computer.

2. If the Star printer or PRT300 printer will be used, use the autosampler
to printer interface cable, Cat. No. 223664-001, to connect the COM2
RS232 port on the autosampler to the 25 pin female RS232 port on
the printer. The printer must have a 9600 baud rate to be connected to
the autosampler. The PRT300 dip switch settings need to be manually
configured for a 9600 baud rate input. PRT300 dip switch numbers
1, 3 and 8 should be set to OFF (down) and 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 should be
set to ON (up).
3. Prepare and install the electrodes. Prepare the electrodes according
to the electrode user guides. Connect the electrodes to the back of
the meter using the extension cables and cable management system
provided with the autosampler. If a stirrer probe will be used, connect
the stirrer probe to the stirrer jack on the back of the autosampler
and then insert the stirrer probe into the electrode holder on the
autosampler.
Note: The minimum required cable length to operate with the
autosampler is 6.25 feet (1.9 meters). Extension cables or electrodes
with an appropriate cable length are needed.

Preparation
Orion Benchtop Meter Setup
The Orion 162A, 535A, 550A, 555A and 162A benchtop meters feature
autosampler capability to automate sample analysis when used with the
AutoTration-500 autosampler.
Press the setup key to enter the setup mode and then press the yes key until
AUtO SAPL is displayed. The benchtop meter setup menu allows for the
following selections:
1. The autosampler can be set to ON or OFF. The default setting is OFF.
To print while using the autosampler, the print setting must be set to
ON in the setup menu.
2. The autosampler beaker rack capacity can be set to a 28-position or 45position beaker capacity. The default setting is 28.
3. The number of samples you wish to analyze can be set up to 42,
depending on the beaker rack configuration. The default setting is 25.

4. The electrode rinse time in rinse beakers can be set from 5 to 60
seconds. The default setting is 10 seconds. The rinse beaker positions
are 1, 2 and 3 on the beaker rack.
5. The stirrer probe speed can be set from 0 to 5. The 0 setting is off and
the 5 setting is the fastest stirrer speed. The default setting is 0. If the
stirrer probe speed is set as 1 to 5, the stirrer probe will be turned on
when the electrodes are in the sample and rinse beakers. A stirrer probe
speed of 3 is best for general analysis procedures because it minimizes
the air bubbles that can interfere with measurements.

Operating the
Orion Benchtop Meters
with the Autosampler
When the meter is powered on, the meter will display AUTO INIT to
indicate that the autosampler is initializing. If the autosampler setup
parameters in the meter are correct, the autosampler initialization will
complete automatically. If an error is displayed, check the autosampler
setup parameters in the meter before proceeding.
The auto key is used to initiate the autosampler sequence when the meter
is connected to the autosampler. If an autosampler sequence is running,
the auto key is used to pause the sequence.
The autosampler sequence may be aborted at any time by pressing the
mode key.
The operator must press the auto key to initialize the autosampler sequence
or resume the autosampler sequence after a pausing. The autosampler
will move the electrodes and stirrer probe into the rinse beakers. Once
the electrodes and stirrer probe have been rinsed, they are sent to the first
sample beaker in the sequence. When the autosampler has achieved a
stable reading for all parameters being measured (pH, ORP, conductivity,
temperature, DO, etc.) the data is logged into the memory of the meter
(Lxxx). After the meter has logged the readings, the autosampler will move
the electrodes and stirrer probe into the rinse beaker for the time specified
in the setup menu. Once the electrodes have been rinsed, the autosampler
will move the electrodes to the next sample in the sequence and will repeat
this procedure for each subsequent sample.
Note: If the data log is full (200 points) before completing an autosampler
sequence, the autosampler will continue with E-26 displayed on the meter.
The operator may begin another sequence by clearing the meter log by
pressing the log clr key.
Note: If an electrode jam occurs and the red light blinks on the
autosampler, turn the autosampler off and wait 45 seconds before turning
it back on again. The autosampler should return to the home position.

Wipe off any spills of solvents, strong acids or strong bases to avoid
discoloration of autosampler case. Since the autosampler is frequently used
in corrosive environments, care should be taken to rinse spills from the
surface of the autosampler by using mild detergents and neutralizing agents
as appropriate. Contact Technical Support for additional information
regarding good lubrication practices, including using silicon oil.
Caution: Be careful not to crimp the tubing. Never push hard enough on
the tubing during installation to bend tubing
1. Loosen the black screw on the rotor (wheel) located on the back of the
autosampler.
2. Remove the two screws on the plastic mounting block to right of rotor
and then remove the plastic block from the autosampler.
3. Loosen the hex nut on the side of the electrode holder block with the
1/16” Allen wrench.
4. Gently pull the end of the tubing that is attached to the rotor out of the
Z-axis assembly.
5. Thread the tubing through the mounting block and outer tube,
keeping the outer tube straight.
6. Push slightly on the outer tube to wiggle the inner PEEK tubing
through the fitting at the top of the Z-axis and out the top block.
7. Pull the tubing through the top block and push it into the hole in the
top of the electrode holder block until the tubing is flush with the
bottom of the block.
8. Tighten the hex nut with the 1/16” Allen wrench.
9. Gently re-thread the tubing into the rotor per the autosampler Z-axis
setup instructions.
10.Reattach the plastic block to the autosampler and tighten two screws on
plastic mounting block.

Troubleshooting
If any issues occur with the autosampler, turn the autosampler off, wait
one minute and then turn the autosampler on. The autosampler should
automatically align itself to the home position. This will raise the electrode
holder up, move the arm to the left side of the autosampler and move the
electrode holder towards the rear of the autosampler.
Before removing obstructions from the sample tray area, press turn the
autosampler off. Any obstructions in the movement of the arm will
damage the unit and the attached electrodes. Remove any obstructions,
objects or spills from the autosampler, beaker rack and drip tray.
