Monitoring on the move
With the right mounting kit it’s easy to place sensors where they need
to be, where they can monitor your permanent installations, equipment,
and facilities. Other sensors can simply be set on a shelf, such as inside
an incubator. In some cases data from these sensors can be downloaded
manually. In others, the data is transmitted wirelessly back to a server at
preprogrammed intervals.
But how can you keep track of temperature when your products or
samples are being transported? It’s a slightly different situation, also one
that OCEASOFT solutions are designed to handle. For shipments of blood
or food, not only is a timely alert essential in case of temperature change,
but delivery services need to be able to document the fact that proper
shipping conditions were respected on the trip

ARCHITECTURE OVERVIEW
The Cobalt wireless monitoring system is a fully integrated wireless sensor network solution that is comprised
of:
Sensors
Digital and analog sensors capable of measuring a
variety of critical parameters, such as temperature,
relative humidity, C02, voltage output, etc..These
sensors are connected to, or integrated in, the
Cobalt modules.

Modules
These battery-powered modules read their sensors
and then log the data in internal memory. Stored
data is then transmitted wirelessly to a central
server.
Wireless
repeaters
Repeaters may be used to provide extra wireless
range between modules and receivers if necessary.

Connected directly to the server computer or
elsewhere on a TCP/IP network, receivers forward
data from modules to the server database and
transmit read requests from software.

communications, 24/24 data collection, reports,

Cobalt 2 is a highly reliable wireless datalogger that reads connected sensors at programmable intervals, stores
the data locally, and then transfers it wirelessly to the ThermoServer database, as described in the previous

DIGITAL TEMPERATURE SENSORS (INTERNAL/EXTERNAL)
Cobalt 2 modules can be equipped with a variety of digital temperature
sensor types. Internal and external sensor options are available, depending
on the target application, such as monitoring ambient temperatures, food
products, incubators, or freezers.

PRECISION TEMPERATURE SENSORS (PT100)
Cobalt 2 modules are available with three types of precision Pt100 sensors
to cover a wide range of applications, from liquid nitrogen tanks to hightemperature ovens.
Each external analog sensor is connected to the Cobalt 2 module via a
robust cable designed for the target temperature range. Data is logged
locally on the Cobalt 2 module and transmitted wirelessly to a host
computer at programmable intervals. Alerts can be sent automatically
in case these readings indicate alarm conditions as configured in the
software.

The wireless humidity/temperature Cobalt 2 module includes a
dual-function device that logs both relative humidity levels and
temperature. This module is generally used in various types of medical
and agri-food storage applications.
The Cobalt 2 module collects and stores humidity (RH) and

DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SENSOR
The Cobalt differential pressure module enables you to compare the relative pressure between two zones,
such as physically separated rooms. This module is typically placed in the room in which the ambient pressure is
considered as “normal”.
A tube is placed on one of the module’s inputs to measure the pressure in another room. The Cobalt

DRY CONTACT INPUT SENSOR
The Cobalt dry contact wireless module can be connected to any industrystandard device with a dry contact output. As dry contact devices do not
generate any power, the Cobalt module emits a low current to detect
whether the switch on the other device is open or closed.
Typical devices that provide a dry contact output include alarm units,
door open/close sensors, and switches. The Cobalt module can be
configured to detect either a “normally closed” or “normally open” state
to correspond with the device to monitor. The Cobalt module indicates
open or closed status in large characters on its LCD display.

Designed for use inside refrigerated trucks and containers, Cobalt M monitors
and records air temperature to protect temperature-sensitive products and

DIGITAL TEMPERATURE SENSORS (INTERNAL/EXTERNAL)
Cobalt 1 modules may be equipped with a variety of digital temperature
sensor types. Internal and external sensor options are available, depending
on the target application, such as monitoring ambient temperatures, food
products, incubators or freezers.
These digital sensors are read directly by the Cobalt 1 signal processor to
ensure consistent accuracy over time. Data is logged locally on the Cobalt
1 module and transmitted wirelessly to a host computer at programmable

This kit enables you to calibrate up to ten external digital or analog

OCEAMAP: THERMAL MAPPING
Compatible with the FD X 15-140 (or NF X 15-140) standard, this unique
thermal mapping system(1) enables you to characterize and qualify
temperature behavior within climate-controlled chambers such as
pharmaceutical freezers, refrigerators, and cold rooms. Simply place the
provided sensors inside the chamber and let the software create a 3-D
map for you.
Thermal mapping enables you to determine the regularity and stability
of temperature-controlled enclosures, and determine compliance or
non-compliance, so that you can manage storage zones in accordance
with your requirements concerning maximum permissible error. Among
other things, this enables you to identify temperature zones that are
compatible with your products, and to adjust equipment settings
accordingly.
Most clients prefer to set up OCEAMap independently from their
regular Cobalt wireless monitoring solution, though the software may
be used with your existing equipment. A turnkey solution is available,
complete with laptop computer, wireless receiver, all required software,
and configured wireless modules/sensors. Please contact OCEASOFT for

LOGTAG
LogTag is a datalogging solution for measuring temperature and/or
humidity levels in a variety of environments, from laboratories and
food storage facilities to the transport containers for biological samples,
blood, organs, etc. Slightly larger than a credit card, LogTag stores several

The OCEASOFT team has unmatched expertise in assisting customers with their monitoring, system and

In order to benefit from an OCEASOFT Technical Support Contract, you must allow restricted remote access to

In-house calibration services
OCEASOFT has an in-house ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory to calibrate a
variety of sensors for different target ranges and applications. The following
calibration options are available, depending on the product type and your
requirements:

Our sensors are typically calibrated by the OCEASOFT laboratory before being
shipped to customers. They are accompanied either by an official COFRAC
accredited certificate or an OCEASOFT certificate (which is downloadable via the
ThermoClient software directly). These certificates contain individual correction
parameters for use in OCEASOFT’s ThermoClient software.
The OCEASOFT laboratory also offers both COFRAC-accredited and certified
calibration services for non-OCEASOFT products. For this, customers must provide
the complete measurement chain. Please contact us for more information.
External digital temperature and dual temperature/humidity sensors on Cobalt
range may be recalibrated by standard exchange. In this case, OCEASOFT sends
you a new sensor and you return your old sensor after swapping them at your
site, which enables you to avoid down-time or traceability interruptions(3). Pt100
sensors are generally recalibrated at your site by a qualified technician. Sensor drift
may also be calculated to establish consistency over time for external temperature
sensors.

USB receivers
All OCEASOFT USB solutions and drivers are tested thoroughly. However, it is not possible to test and qualify all
computers and configurations. Our experience has shown there are some variations in USB implementations by
computer manufacturers.
It is therefore important for users to avoid unnecessary risk by testing the products and validating processes
internally to ensure stability and reliability of USB communications in their environment.

GLOSSARY
Alarm
Anomaly condition reported by an end-point when a sensor exceeds allowed
bounds (i.e. temperature too low, CO2 level too high, etc.) or in case of failure.
Alert
Notification that is sent to a user or group of users when an alarm is reported by
an end-point module.
Client
The software application for solution configuration and everyday monitoring and
reporting tasks.
Datalogging
The process of using an electronic device to record data from a built-in or external
sensor over time.
End-point
Wireless module that logs sensor data on a regular basis and transmits it to the
server.
ISM bands
License-free wireless frequencies for Industrial Medical Scientific applications
around the world.
Network
Computer workstations connected with servers, typically via TCP/IP. Networks
can be “local” (LAN) within a specific area or building, or “wide area” (WAN),
covering geographically separated locations.
Receiver
Device that collects readings from end-point modules. Connected to the server
computer either directly via a USB port or networked via TCP/IP.
Repeater
Device that transparently relays the wireless signal from more distant devices.
SDP
Service Discovery Protocol, wireless technique used to automatically add new
devices to the wireless sensor network.
SEA
Spontaneous Emission of Alarms, a Cobalt feature that notifies selected individuals
or groups when an alarm condition is detected on an end-point module or
receiver.
Sensor
Electronic device that measures physical ambient parameters such as temperature,
humidity, or CO2 level.
Server
Computer configured with one or more receivers to collect sensor data from endpoint modules. The database and alarm management system both reside on the
server.
PTFE
Polytetrafluorethylene: Polymer with remarkable insulation properties
(temperatures up to +380°C) and protection from humidity.
