1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
The Type 6 Starter Kit is intended for testing and verification of COM Express systems based
on Type 6 modules and includes everything customers need to begin their own design and
development.
The Type 6 Starter Kit includes the Express-BASE6 standard ATX size COM Express
reference carrier board, a COM Express Type 6 basic form factor module and additional
items such as cabling, power supply and thermal solution. The complete kit allows customers
to quickly emulate the functionality of their end product for software development and
hardware verification. Drivers, BSPs, design files (including schematics, mechanical drawings
and BOM), certificates and test reports are included to assist customers in designing their
own custom carrier board. The Type 6 Starter Kit also includes additional development tools
including a DDI video adapter card for HDMI and DisplayPort verification (T6-DDI), a
PCIe x16-to-two x8 adapter card (P16TO28) and an LPC POST Debug Board.

2.2 Board Installation
Procedure

Insert the DDR3 memory into the COM Express Type 6
module DDR3 SODIMM socket.

Removed the protective membranes from the
thermal pads.

Assemble the heatsink onto the COM Express
Type 6 module.

Use the four M2.5, L=6mm screws provided to
fasten the heatsink to the module.

Place the COM Express Type 6 module and
heatsink assembly onto the connectors on the
carrier board as shown.
Then press down on the module until it is firmly
seated on the carrier board.
Step 6
Use the five M2.5, L=16mm screws provided to
secure the COM Express Type 6 module to the
carrier board from the solder side.

2.3 Power and I/O Connections
Connect the Power Supply
Required items
Plug the ATX connector of the power supply into CN1 and
plug the ATX 12V 4-pin connector of the power supply into
CN5.
DO NOT plug the ATX 12V 4-pin connector of
the power supply into the ATX 24-pin power
connector on the Express-BASE6
Plug the AC power cord into the power supply

Connect the VGA Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse
Plug VGA cable and PS/2 keyboard and mouse
connectors into the Express-BASE6.

2.4 Powering Up the Express-BASE6 System
To power up the Express-BASE6 system, follow the steps below.
Powering Up the Express-BASE6 System
The POST LEDs on the Express-BASE6 will display the
bootup status – "A6" indicates a successful boot.
First Boot into BIOS
If no operating system is installed on the system, then the
monitor will display the BIOS settings menu after the first
boot up.

How to quick load BIOS default settings
Press the <F3> key to bring up the "Load Optimized Defaults" window as shown.
Then press the <Enter> key to load optimized BIOS defaults.
Then press the <F4> key to bring up the "Save & Exit" window as shown.
Then press the <Enter> key to save the configuration.

3 T6-DDI Video Adapter Card
The T6-DDI Video Adapter Card provides connector access to the COM Express Type 6
module's Digital Display Interface (DDI) ports which can be individually set to HDMI (DVI) or
DisplayPort (or DVI) output mode.

There are specific BIOS and jumper settings that set each of the adapter card's DDI ports
to either HDMI or DisplayPort (or DVI) output mode. Please follow the procedures
outlined below to set the output of the T6-DDI Video Adapter Card.

3.1 HDMI Output

Short pins 1-2 of the jumpers for each DDI port you wish to set to HDMI output mode.

Plug the T6-DDI card into the DDI1 slot of the Express-BASE6 carrier board.
Plug HDMI cable into the desired T6-DDI HDMI connector (DDI1 shown)

3.2 DisplayPort (or DVI) Output

If you have hot-plugged a DisplayPort monitor and the display output is not visible,
use the hotkey sequence "CTRL + ALT + Delete" to activate the display.
DVI Display Output
A DisplayPort-to-DVI cable is included with the T6-DDI as shown.
To connect the T6-DDI adapter card DisplayPort output to a DVI display, please use this
adapter cable.

4 PCIe x16-to-two-x8 Adapter Card
The PCIe x16-to-two-x8 Adapter Card allows the use of two PCIe x8 add-on cards from a
single PCIe x16 slot.
Plug the adapter card into the PEG1 slot of the Express-BASE6 carrier board.
Plug PCIe x8 cards as required into the PCIe x8 slot of adapter card.

5 LPC POST Debug Board
The LPC POST Debug Board with secondary LPC BIOS and POST status LED. Can be
easily connected to the LPC debug port on the COM Express Module to monitor BIOS POST.
A single step switch is provided for BIOS debugging and verification.
The LPC Debug Card is packaged with the following contents:

5.2 Assembly and Operation
To connect the LPC POST Debug Board to the COM Express Type 6 module, follow the
procedure below.
Connect the LPC flat cable to CN1 on the LPC POST Debug Board and CN1 on the LPC
Transfer Board as shown. Be sure to align Pin 1 of the cable connector to Pin 1 of the
board connectors.

Place the LPC Transfer Board over the COM Express Type 6 module so that CN2
(bottom side, male) aligns with the LPC debug connector on the module (female) as
shown. Be sure to align Pin 1 of the male and female connectors

When the system is powered up, the LPC POST data LEDs will display the BIOS status as
shown.
SW1: Single Step Switch
To enable "Single Step Mode", press the SW1: Single Step Switch at any time after boot
up. Press SW1 again to advance BIOS by one step.
