Dominoes are played by TWO opposing teams of TWO players each.
The draw to find the player who will start is carried out by turning all dominoes face down
and shuffling them. Each player then draws one domino and the player with the highest
number of total spots is "ON SET', and he or she starts the first segment of play called a
HAND.
The draw of dominoes is then made by turning all dominoes face down, shuffling and then
each player draws FIVE dominoes for his hand.
The remaining dominoes form the BONEYARD. This boneyard is placed at the right side of
the player "on set' to later identify who this player was.
At any time during play when a player has no suitable domino in his hand, he will instead
pick up a domino from the boneyard, unless only one domino remains in the boneyard. The
player must then pass, as the last domino in the boneyard may not be picked up.
Each player in turn plays one domino starting with the player "on set".
The first domino played is called the SET, lead or down.
It may be either a SINGLE or a DOUBLE.
The play rotates clockwise.
If a player has a playable domino, he MUST play it or face a penalty.
If a DOUBLE is played, it must be aligned at right angles to the line of play (the long side
attached to the last domino) and the full spot count is included in the score. Play continues
by aligning the next domino to the other long side and the DOUBLE then no longer scores.
At no time may a DOUBLE be aligned lengthwise (to only score half its full face count), and
at no time may a DOUBLE placed at right angles be later realigned lengthwise.
The first DOUBLE domino played is a SPINNER. It is placed at right angles to the single
domino line and is scored at the full spot count. The next play on the SPINNER MUST be
on the long side i.e. continuing the domino line. When a new domino is played in this way,
the SPINNER is NO LONGER included in the score. Subsequently dominos may be played
to the short sides of the SPINNER only i.e. creating two additional pathways. The score for
these additional ends is then included in the overall score.
When one of the players succeeds in playing all the dominoes from his hand, the segment
of play is completed and he has DOMINOED.
At the end of this segment, the other players expose their remaining dominoes.
The player of the team who has dominoed or gone out counts up all of the spots on the
opposing TEAM'S dominoes, and receives one point for each multiple of 5 in the total plus
one point for a balance of 3 or 4. Thus a spot count of 18 scores 4 points. The dominoes in
the player's partner's hand is disregarded.
Scoring takes place during play as well as at the end of play, when all the open ends of
play have a spot total of 5 or a multiple of 5. The player who made the play to achieve this,
scores a point for each 5 or multiple of 5. If the total is not 5 or a multiple of 5 no score is
made. A double played as an open end must have all spots included in the count.
All scores must be claimed prior to the next play and running totals kept.
A BLOCKED hand results from an inability of ALL players to play or draw from the
boneyard. In this event, All players expose their dominoes and the TEAM with the lowest
combined total of spots receives the point value of the spots in the opposing team's hands.
If the combined count in both team's hands is the same, there is no score.
The player "on set” for the next segment or hand, is that player sitting on the left
(clockwise) of the previous player "on set". Play continues in this way until the winning
team scores a combined total of 250 points.
If further games are to be played as part of the competition, it must be by agreement by
BOTH teams BEFORE the start of the game. The losers of the first game set for the
second. Either partner may set but it must be decided prior to start of play.
