Policy Strollers, Carts (grocery) and Large Items on
Transit Buses

Baby Strollers and Carts
Customers wishing to bring strollers, carts and large items on board transit buses
should recognize their personal responsibility to safety. In an effort to assist our
riders in maintaining the safety of their children, other customers and our
Operators, the following guidelines have been developed;
The Stroller and Cart guideline will permit customers to board Brandon Transit
buses based on several criteria. Summarized below are areas of consideration
when developing guidelines, please refer to each section for complete details.
• Stroller / Cart Size – Strollers, carts of acceptable size, that do not pose
safety concerns while on the bus will be permitted, when deemed safe to
do so.
• Bus Capacity – Strollers and carts will be permitted entry on Brandon
Transit buses provided they do not impede the safety of other passengers
or the Operator.
• Bus Type – Due to the variation in Transit Equipment, sizes and
accessibility guidelines have been developed for each bus type in terms of
o Seating Location
o Bus Entry / Exit
Stroller / Cart Size
Strollers and Carts of acceptable size, that do not pose safety concerns while on
the bus will be permitted when deemed safe to do so. Customers must be able
to board and exit buses in a safe and efficient manner. As a general rule, the
following guidelines will be followed;
• Small Sling Type Strollers will be permitted UNFOLDED within Transit
Buses
• Small / Compact Foldable Carts (Grocery/Laundry) will be permitted
UNFOLDED within Transit Buses 16” or less Width x 14” or less Front to
Back Depth

Large Umbrella Strollers will be permitted FOLDED within Transit Buses
Large Foldable Carts (Grocery/Laundry) will be permitted FOLDED within
Transit Buses. 16” or Greater Width x 12” or Greater Front to Back Depth

Please Note
• Transit Operators may at any time request that ALL carts or strollers be
folded
o If bus is at or near capacity, ie: Customers standing
o In case where transporting groceries and stroller/cart alone and
where items being transported are greater than the rider can safely
transport alone
• Strollers and Carts should be folded prior to bus arrival
• All Folded Strollers and carts must be stored safely out of the aisle in
between, or under transit seating.
• Those requiring assistance should ensure they travel with an attendant or
companion who may assist them with carrying items on and off Transit
Buses.
• Please be courteous of requests to Brandon Transit Operators and
Customers
Bus Capacity
During busier times, where overcrowding exists, Transit Operators may have to
refuse customers with unfolded strollers. These occurrences will generally occur
at peak operating, but may occur other than listed;

Bus Type
Brandon Transit has three bus types in its daily scheduled service operation.
Each bus offers different levels of accessibility, and preferred seating locations.
When planning to access Brandon Transit with a stroller or cart, we recommend
the following;
• Check the Brandon Transit website for listing of routes to determine the
bus type you may encounter, although subject to change.
• Plan your travel whenever possible around peak operating requirements
to reduce the risk of needing to fold your stroller or cart
• Watch for postings on entry to the bus indicating preferred seating for
those with strollers
Bus Type – 25’ High Floor (Eldorado)
Preferred Seating (pictured below right) on the Eldorado Buses is designated as
the first forward facing seat, directly behind the perimeter seating. This seating is
reserved as follows;
1. Seniors with carts/walking aids
2. Parents with strollers
When riding the Eldorado bus with a permitted unfolded stroller or cart;
• Proceed to first forward facing seat (as shown above right), if seat is in
use by another customer that is does not have a stroller or cart with
them, with courtesy ask that they may allow you this space
• Pull yellow handle on perimeter seating and lift (as shown above right)
• Seat in first forward facing seat with stroller in front of you, both hands on
the stroller
• Ensure wheel locks/brakes are in place and child straps are secure

Place other items to the side, out of the aisle – Your primary concern is
with securement of the stroller ahead of you
Pull buzzer, or request another rider to do in advance of stop when
wishing to exit
Bus Type – 40’ High Floor
Preferred Seating (pictured below) on the 40’ Buses is designated as the first
forward facing seat, directly behind the perimeter seating, if available, or
alternatively the middle rear seat. This seating is reserved as follows;
1. Seniors with carts
2. Parents with strollers
When riding a 40’ High Floor bus with a permitted unfolded stroller or cart;
• Proceed to one of the preferred seating locations as indicated above
• Sit in a forward facing seat with stroller in front of you, both hands on the
stroller
• Ensure wheel locks/brakes are in place and child straps are secure
• Place other items to the side, out of the aisle – YOUR primary concern is
with securement of the stroller ahead of you
• Pull buzzer, or request another rider to do so in advance of stop when
wishing to exit

Entering and Exiting High Floor Buses
When boarding or exiting a High Floor Bus (25’ or 40’), please proceed as
follows;
Alone
Companion
1. When alone – With the stroller facing away from the bus entry, sercure the
stroller from the rear, and slowly proceed back up one stair at a time.
2. With Companion – With the stroller facing away from the bus entry, one
person sercuring the rear and one person securing the front of the stroller,
slowly proceed back up one stair at a time.
Note – For the safety of your child, ensure your child is seated properly
and all safety straps are secured and in place
Bus Type – 40’ Low Floor
Preferred Seating (pictured below) on the 40’ Buses is designated as the first
forward facing seat, directly behind the perimeter seating, if available, or
alternatively the middle rear seat. This seating is reserved as follows;
1. Wheel Chairs / Persons with Disabilities
2. Seniors with Carts
3. Parents with Strollers

• Proceed to the the preferred seating locations as indicated above (Wheel
Chair designated space
• Sit forward facing seat with stroller in front of you, both hands on the
stroller
• Ensure wheel locks/brakes are in place and child straps are secure
• Place other items to the side, out of the aisle – YOUR primary concern is
with securement of the stroller ahead of you
• Pull buzzer, or request another rider to do so in advance of stop when
wishing to exit
Entering and Exiting Low Floor Buses
When boarding or exiting a Low Floor Bus, please proceed as follows;
1. When alone – With the stroller facing away from the bus entry, sercure the
stroller from the rear, and slowly proceed back up one stair at a time.
