An Introduction to Media Converters and Network Extenders
In today’s rapidly expanding data network the need to drive higher speeds closer to the
user is an ongoing challenge. Economic and physical constraints further complicate the
hardware needs to meet desired performance.
This paper will briefly cover options and provide a straight forward system that will solve
these issues and meet your capital constraints. First we need to start with a brief
overview of media converter technology and how it is used.
What is a media converter?
A fiber media converter is a simple networking device that makes it possible to extend various
data networks beyond it physical distance limitations or connect two dissimilar media types such
as twisted pair with fiber optic cabling. Although they were introduced to the industry some time
ago they are an increasingly important device in interconnecting fiber optic cabling-based
systems with existing copper-based, structured cabling systems. They are also used in
metropolitan area network (MAN) access and data transport services to enterprise customers.
Where do we use them/why we need them?
Fiber media converters support many different data communication protocols including
Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1/J1, DS3/E3, as well as multiple cabling types
such as coax, twisted pair, multi-mode and single-mode fiber optics. Media converter types
range from small standalone devices and PC card converters to high port-density chassis
systems that offer many advanced features for network management.
On some devices, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) enables proactive
management of link status, monitoring chassis environmental statistics and sending traps to
network managers in the event of a fiber break or even link loss on the copper port.
Advantages of Media Converters and Extenders
Media converters are low cost robust devices that allow the network planners to expand
the reach of the network beyond typical twisted pair cable constraints. Easily add
additional buildings associated with the “main office” and expand existing optical or
copper transport networks. With 3-R capabilities long distances can be managed with
no impact on throughput.
Further, media converters are not complex devices requiring a new skill set to engineer,
install and manage. Existing skill set are with modest introductory training allow the
current IT/Engineering staff to quickly deploy the solution.

Media Converters, Extenders and Pluggable Optics
The wide variety of pluggable optics allow media converters to easily be installed in short, midrange and long haul applications connecting a mixture of devices. The flexibility of pluggable
optics allow the introduction of xWDM technology into the network thereby providing further
capacity expansion of the network. Long reach optics allow greater distances to be covered with
no throughput loss (up to 70 km built in or 160 km SFP’s).
Is the throughput or quality of data impacted?
No these devices do not negatively impact the quality of the data throughput. Most media
converters are 3R devices – re-amplify, re-shape, re-time the signal for strict compliance with
quality standards. These devices are not muxponders (aggregating multiple ports to one port)
these strictly convert disparate media types or re repeater devices.

Key Points:
Point to Point – excellent application for mid and long haul connections via fiber. Typical
application connecting two branch offices or facilities. Utilize the appropriate single slot chassis.
Point to Multi-Point – excellent for banks, medical offices, schools and government buildings.
Requires large chassis and appropriate single slot chassis’.
Copper/Fiber – well suited for in building networks, multi floor expansion, upgrading older
Ethernet networks. Extending range and improving network throughput are target scenarios.
Transport – in some cases carriers are looking for a low cost solution to extend services
between a single customers. End user is moving to a new location and fiber network requires
extension to maintain service continuity. Usage is generally limited to a customer’s network not
a full transport network

Demark – the NID can be utilized as a smart hand-off device allowing a clean point to transition
from the provider’s network to the internal network. A demark allows for clear point of
troubleshooting, traffic management and network maintenance.
Management – INTELLIPORT™ can be managed locally or remotely via SNMP protocol. Ideal
for complex or distributed networks.
These are examples of typical applications for a media converter system. There are other
incidences that a media converter may be a best in class technological solution to deploy.
