By: Chris Boone
This Applications Note is designed to assist the user with downloading new software into
the PhD Lite by IrDA. The ability to Flash Upload a PhD Lite depends greatly on the
OTP (One Time Programmable) version installed in the instrument. The OTP can not be
upgraded in the field.
How to determine the OTP version in your PhD Lite
1. Turn the PhD Lite on. In the latest versions of the PhD Lite, Software and OTP
versions are given as the first two screens during the instrument startup sequence.
biosystems
OTP V.1.10
biosystems
PhD Lite V.3.21
If the OTP version is not given, but the software version is given as version 1.37 or
greater, proceed to step 2A. If the software version is less than 1.37, proceed to step
2B.
2A.For instruments with Instrument Software version 1.37 or greater, enter the View
Menu from the Main Menu. (See the PhD Lite Reference Manual for further
instructions). From the View Menu, select Version. Once the software version is
shown, press the right arrow key to access the OTP information.

OTP V.1.10
If the OTP version is given as “255.255”or “NA” then the OTP version is 1.08 or
less.
2B.If the flash version is given as less than 1.37, the OTP version can not be established
without disassembling the PhD Lite. Call Biosystems for further details.
Instructions by OTP version
All OTP Versions up to and including 1.07
The Flash Upload Utilities Program must be installed on a PC with one of the following
operating systems: Windows 95, 98, 98se. It may take a few attempts to successfully
flash the instrument.
If the PC is equipped with Fast IR (infrared) it is necessary to limit the connection speed
to 115,200 bps (115.2 kps). See notes below for instructions on changing infrared
connection speeds. If the speed is set higher than 115,200 bps, the instrument will come
in range but the connection will timeout (after approx. 30 seconds) and the Flash Upload
Utilities program will display an ‘Error 10060 in function SupportsLPT / Connection
Timeout’.

OTP versions up to and including version 1.07 are not compatible with Flash Upload
Utilities program installed on PCs running Windows NT 4.0, 2000 or XP.
If the Flash Upload Utilities program cannot be installed on a PC running Windows 95,
98, or 98se (Second Edition) the instrument will have to be returned to Biosystems to be
flashed. Call Biosystems Instrument Service Department if you have questions.
