How to Check Out eBooks and eAudiobooks on Your Kindle Fire using the Overdrive App
*Instructions may vary slightly depending on your specific device.
Getting Started
You will need a valid library card and access to the Amazon Appstore.
Installing the OverDrive Media Console App
1. Before you check out your first eBook or eAudiobook, you will need to install the free OverDrive Media Console
App onto your Kindle Fire.
2. Tap Shop on your Kindle Fire and in the search box type Overdrive Media Console.
3. Once you find it, tap Buy Now from Amazon Appstore, then Download.
4. Once the App has finished installing, open the OverDrive Media Console App.
5. For eBooks, you will need to authorize the app with an Adobe ID.
Getting an Adobe ID

Tap the App Settings icon.
If you have an Adobe ID, skip to Step 8.
To get an ID, tap the Get a Free Adobe ID button. This will open Adobe’s website.
Enter all required fields on the Create Adobe ID page.
Remember the email and password you used for your Adobe ID, you will need it again.
When finished, tap Create at the bottom of the page.
Return to the Overdrive Media Console app.
Enter the email address for your Adobe ID and your Adobe account Password.
Tap Authorize.
Getting to the St. Charles City-County Library Overdrive Collection

Tap the Get Books icon or the Menu icon, then Get Books.
Tap Add Library.
Type in your zip code, and then tap Search.
Choose any St. Charles City-County Library location.
Tap the star next to that location’s name, to save the St. Charles City-County Library to your “Get Books” list.
Tap St. Charles City-County Library.
The mobile version of the St. Charles City-County Library Overdrive page is displayed.
Signing into Your OverDrive Account
1. Before you can check out an eBook or eAudiobook, you must sign into your library website’s OverDrive account.
To do this, tap the Account icon on our Overdrive mobile site.
2. The Remote Access Login page will display.
3. Enter your Library card number and last name into the corresponding fields.
4. Tap the LogIn button.
5. Your Bookshelf will display.
6. Set your default lending periods under Settings in your account. For eBooks and eAudiobooks, you may select 7
or 14 days.
7. Tap the Menu icon to browse the library’s eBook collection.

Checking Out Kindle eBooks
NOTE: eBooks show an open Book symbol on the cover. eAudiobooks show a headphones symbol. Black symbols
means the book is available. Grey symbols mean the book is checked out.
1. When you find a book of interest tap on the Book Cover.
2. A page will display with information on the book you selected.
3. Tap the Borrow button; this will automatically check out the book to you for the lending period previously
selected.
4. If the Place a Hold button is displayed, all available copies are checked out. Tap Place a Hold to be notified via
email when the book becomes available.
5. Once the title is checked out, you will be automatically directed to your bookshelf. If you have checked out the
incorrect title or format, you may use the Return Title button only before you download.
6. Tap the Download button for the title you would like to download. If multiple formats are available, a drop
down menu will appear allowing you to choose the Kindle format. Check the Kindle Book box, then tap Confirm
& download.
7. You will be taken to an Amazon.com page. You will need to be sign into your Amazon account, if you are not
already. Tap the Get Library Book button. If you more than one device is associated with your Kindle account,
check the Deliver to: drop down menu to make sure you send the book to your desired device.
8. When finished downloading, tap the Home icon on your Kindle Fire, and the book will appear.
9. Tap the title to open the book.
10. That’s it! Your library books are now ready. And don’t worry about overdue fees. Your library books will
automatically expire at the end of the lending period you selected (7-14 days).
Checking Out EPUB format eBooks or MP3 eAudiobooks on your Kindle Fire
NOTE: eBooks show an open Book symbol on the cover. eAudiobooks show a headphones symbol. Black symbols
means the book is available. Grey symbols mean the book is checked out.

Returning a Kindle Book Early
1. Sign into your Amazon.com account, and choose the Manage Your Kindle option from the Account drop down
menu.
2. Your Kindle Library will be displayed. Tap the Actions button next the book title. Choose the Return this Book
option. To remove the title from your device completely, you must tap the book cover on your Kindle, and
select Remove from Carousel.

Returning EPUB eBooks or MP3 eAudiobooks Early
1. In Bookshelf view, tap the plus sign to the right of the title.
2. Tap Return/Delete.
3. If you are sure you want to return the title, tap Return then Delete.
eBook Tips
When reading the book, tap the middle of the page to bring up additional options:
1. Tap the Menu icon to return or delete the title and to navigate back to your Bookshelf.
2. Tap the Navigation icon to navigate between chapters.
3. Tap the Settings icon to change Reader settings.
