Procedures to Clear Cache on Various Browser Programmes and Refresh Discussions Tool
On Tuesday morning 6 August 2013 an error occurred on some Discussions tool, especially in group
sites on myUnisa, that resulted in either a blank page displaying or an error message requesting “the
placement id and site id..”.
The error was resolved at about 11:00 on 6 August but the effect may persist until the internet
browser programme used to access the faulty Discussions tool is cleared of any cached information
and the Discussions tool page refreshed.
Below instructions for clearing cached information for the three main browsers used by students for
myUnisa access.
Procedure to clear cache on Internet Explorer browsers

Close all your internet browser windows except for one window.
In the one open browser window, Click on Tools
Click on Internet options
In “Browsing History” click "Delete" and then choose the "Delete cookies" and “Temporary
Internet files” options
Now click "Delete"
Close this one open browser window as well.
Login to myUnisa and access a Discussions tool.
Refresh the screen (F5 or right click + refresh) if you still see a blank screen.
Procedure to clear cache on Firefox browsers

Open your Firefox browser (on any website).
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options
Select the Advanced panel.
Click on the Network tab.
In the Cached Web Content section, click Clear Now.

Click OK to close the Options window
Close all open browser windows.
Login to myUnisa and access a Discussions tool.
Refresh the screen (F5 or right click + refresh) if you still see a blank screen.
Procedure to clear cache on Chrome browsers
1. Open your Chrome browser (on any website).

Click the Chrome menu
on the browser toolbar.
Select Tools.
Select Clear browsing data.
In the dialog box that appears, select the checkboxes for the types of information that you
want to remove. Select Delete cookies and Empty the cache
Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete. Select
beginning of time to delete everything.
Click Clear browsing data.
Close all open browser windows.
Login to myUnisa and access a Discussions tool.
Refresh the screen (F5 or right click + refresh) if you still see a blank screen.
