INTRODUCTION

The BB-210CE is a full-function, stereo Boombox for replay of

CD and MP3/WMA files stored on a CD-ROM, USB flash drive or SD card.

The 2-band radio receives FM stereo and AM bands, and the built-in cassette recorder will record from the source that is playing.

The BB-210CE may be powered from the AC mains or by batteries for portable use.

Carefully unpack the unit.

If any items are missing or damaged, contact your nearest

TESCO store for a replacement. Have your receipt ready when you call.

Retain the packaging. If you dispose of it, do so having regard to any recycling regulations in your area.

Retain the User Handbook. If you pass the unit on to a third party make sure you pass on the handbook.

LOCATION

Place the unit on dry stable surface away from heat and damp and where it is unlikely to fall or be knocked over.

FITTING BATTERIES

1. Unclip the two battery cover latches and remove the battery cover.

2. Fit two ‘C’/’UM2’ batteries into the lower battery compartment, observing polarity as shown.

3. Fit 4 x ‘C’/’UM2’ batteries into the upper battery compartment, observing polarity as shown.

BATTERY OPERATION

FITTING BATTERIES

Referring to the previous section, fit 6 x ‘C’/’UM2’ batteries into the battery compartment.

Remove the batteries if the unit will not be used for a long time to avoid the danger of leakage.

NOTE: Never mix old and new batteries or batteries of different types. Batteries should always be replaced as sets.

BATTERY DISPOSAL

Dispose of used batteries with regard to the recycling regulations in your area. Do NOT short circuit batteries or throw them into water, the general rubbish or in a fire.

Weak batteries can leak and damage the unit. Replace them in good time!

AC MAINS OPERATION

CONNECTING POWER

• Check that the mains voltage marked on the rating plate on the back panel is the same as the voltage in your area.

Plug the AC power cord into the AC inlet

Plug the mains plug into the wall socket and switch the mains power on.

POWER CONTROL/FUNCTION

The power control switch is combined with the function selector, located on the left side of the unit.

To turn the radio on:

• Slide the FUNCTION SELECTOR to the RADIO position.

To play CD/MP3/USB/SD:

• Slide the FUNCTION SELECTOR to the CD/MP3/USB/SD position.

To turn the cassette player on:

• Slide the FUNCTION SELECTOR to the TAPE/OFF position.

The power will switch on automatically when a cassette function key is pressed.

To turn the unit off:

• Slide the FUNCTION SELECTOR to the TAPE/OFF position.

Check that the cassette player is set to ‘STOP’.

4. Re-fit the battery cover.

LISTENING TO FM RADIO

To listen to FM radio:

Fully extend the telescopic aerial at the back of the unit.

Move the FUNCTION selector on the left side to select the RADIO position.

Move the BAND selector on the top panel to the FM ST.

(FM stereo) position.

Turn the TUNING control to select the station you want

(the FM frequency scale is the outer scale marked in

MHz).

• Fine adjust the tuning so that the station plays clearly.

If you can hear a lot of background noise when playing the station, the signal may be weak.

You may be able to improve the signal strength by adjusting the position of the telescopic aerial or moving the radio to a different position.

LISTENING TO AM RADIO

To listen to AM radio:

• Move the FUNCTION selector on the left side to select

• the RADIO position.

Move the BAND selector on the top panel to the AM position.

Turn the TUNING control to select the station you want

(the AM frequency scale is the inner scale marked in kHz).

• Fine adjust the tuning so that the station plays clearly.

You may be able to improve the clarity of the sound by rotating the radio until the sound is clearest.

ADJUSTING THE VOLUME

To increase the volume:

• Rotate the VOLUME control wheel on the left side towards the back of the unit.

To decrease the volume:

• Rotate the VOLUME control wheel on the left side towards the front of the unit.

NOTE:- It is not necessary to extend the telescopic aerial when listening to AM radio.

If this doesn’t help and the noise persists, switching to FM mono reception will reduce the background noise.

To switch to FM mono:

Move the BAND slide switch to the FM position.

NOTE:- FM mono will not give the spatial sound benefits of

FM stereo, but will always play with less background noise.

PLAYING A CD

SELECTING CD OPERATION

• Move the FUNCTION selector on the left side to select the CD/MP3/USB/SD position.

The display on the front panel will light.

LOADING/REMOVING A DISC

Before loading a disc for the first time:

• Lift the CD door to open the CD loading bay and remove any transit packing that may be fitted to protect the CD player in shipping.

Loading a CD:

Remove any USB or SD card media that is inserted.

Lift the CD door to open the CD loading bay.

Holding the disc by the edges, place the disc on the

• turntable in the centre of the CD loading bay with the label uppermost. Press the centre of the disc into place on the turntable with a click.

Gently close the CD door.

The unit will read the disc and briefly display the total number of tracks on the disc before commencing play automatically

Removing a disc:

Ensure that the disc is stopped.

Lift the CD door to open the CD loading bay.

Holding the disc by the edges, lift the disc off the turntable and place it back in the case.

• Gently close the CD door.

PLAYBACK CONTROL

Play/pause:

• Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to toggle between play and pause mode during playback.

Stopping playback:

• Press the STOP button during playback.

Playback will stop. The total number of tracks will be displayed.

Selecting tracks:

• Press the SKIP+ or SKIP- button briefly to select the next or previous track. Pressing SKIP- while playing a track will replay the current track.

The track number being played will be displayed.

Fast search:

• Press and hold the SKIP+ or SKIP- button to fast search forward or backward through a track.

The track will search at high speed.

Repeat/random play:

• During playback, press the MODE button repeatedly to cycle through the available modes shown below -

The mode selected will be shown on the display.

Selecting ‘Repeat 1’ will continuously repeat the current track.

Selecting ‘Repeat All’ will continuously repeat the entire disc.

Selecting ‘Random’ will play all tracks in a random sequence.

PLAYING MP3/WMA FROM A CD-ROM OR FLASH MEDIA

MP3/WMA MUSIC FILE COMPILATIONS

This unit will also play MP3/WMA music file compilations.

These are normally created on a computer and saved to a CD-

ROM, a USB Flash drive or SD Card.

File organisation:

The files on the CD-ROM or flash media may be organised in the following ways -

• All music tracks stored in the ‘root’ directory of the CD-

ROM/Flash Media. In this case, all tracks will be played in a numerical/alphabetical order.

• Music tracks saved as albums into separate folders on the

CD-ROM/Flash Media. In this case, each complete album will play in numerical/alphabetical order.

• A compilation may also have a combination of the above with some tracks stored in the ‘root’ directory and some stored in album ‘folders’. In this case, the tracks in the

‘root’ directory will play first, followed by the albums, played in sequence.

NOTE: MP3 and WMA files may be mixed within a compilation.

The player will switch automatically to play these as the format changes.

SELECTING MP3/WMA OPERATION

• Move the FUNCTION selector on the left side to select the CD/MP3/USB/SD position.

The display on the front panel will light.

LOADING A MP3/WMA COMPILATION CD-ROM

MP3/WMA compilation CD-ROMs are loaded and unloaded in the same way as CDs. Ensure that there is no Flash Media inserted and refer to the section ‘LOADING/REMOVING A DISC’ on the previous page.

LOADING FLASH MEDIA

Loading a USB drive or SD card containing MP3/WMA files:

• If a disc is loaded, remove it before loading the USB drive/

SD card. Ensure the CD door is closed.

Insert the USB drive or SD card into the correct slot on the top panel. Note that the slots are polarised.

The unit will read the flash media and the display will briefly show the total number of tracks on the media.

PLAYBACK CONTROL

Playback control is the same for all compilations, whether stored on a CD-ROM or Flash Media. Once a compilation is loaded, play will start automatically. The MP3 or WMA indicator on the display will indicate the type of music file being played.

Play/pause:

• Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to toggle between play and pause mode during playback.

Stopping playback:

• Press the STOP button during playback.

Playback will stop. The total number of tracks will be displayed.

Selecting tracks:

• Press the SKIP+ or SKIP- button briefly to select the next or previous track. Pressing SKIP- while playing a track will replay the current track.

The track number being played will be displayed.

Selecting albums:

• Press the ALBUM button to display the current album

• number.

Continue pressing the ALBUM button repeatedly to step through the albums in the compilation.

• NOTE: Album selection is only possible if the files on the media have been organised into albums.

Fast search:

• Press and hold the SKIP+ or SKIP- button to fast search forward or backward through a track.

The track will search at high speed.

Repeat/random play:

• During playback, press the MODE button repeatedly to cycle through the available modes shown below -

The mode selected will be shown on the display.

• ‘Repeat 1’ will continuously repeat the current track.

‘Repeat Album’ will repeat the album currently playing.

‘Repeat All’ will continuously repeat the compilation.

‘Random’ will play all tracks on the entire disc/flash media in a random sequence.

PROGRAM PLAY

You can store a program selection of up to 20 tracks from a CD or 99 tracks from an MP3/WMA compilation to play in your preferred sequence.

To set a program:

• Load a CD or MP3/WMA compilation and wait for it to read.

Play will begin automatically.

• Press the STOP button to stop playback (programming is

• only possible when stopped).

Press the MODE button.

The display will show the PROG symbol and P01 flashing (the position of this track in the program).

• If you are playing a MP3/WMA compilation of albums, you can optionally change the album number to program by pressing the ALBUM button repeatedly (skip this step if you are programming a CD).

• To save this track into the program sequence, press the

MODE button.

The display will show 02 flashing, indicating that you are now entering the second track in the program sequence.

• Repeat the previous two steps (three steps if you want to change album) until you have stored all the tracks in the program sequence.

Playing the program:

• Press the playing.

PLAY/PAUSE button to start the program

The PROG symbol will remain on and the program will begin to play.

Selecting tracks:

• You can navigate through the tracks stored in the program by pressing the SKIP+ or SKIP- button.

Clearing the program:

• Press the STOP button twice.

The PROG symbol will switch off.

• Select the track number you want to program by pressing the SKIP+ or SKIP- button.

PLAYING AND RECORDING CASSETTE TAPES

You can play cassette tapes in the cassette player. You can also record on cassettes from the CD or radio.

Three types of cassette tapes are generally available - Normal

(IEC I), Chrome (IEC II) and Metal (IEC IV). The cassette player will play all three types, but Normal cassettes are recommended for recordings.

Loading a cassette:

Press the STOP/EJ. key to open the cassette door.

Place a cassette tape into the loading door with the exposed tape facing upwards and the side you want to play facing towards you.

• Close the cassette loading door gently.

Removing a cassette:

• If a cassette is playing, press the STOP/EJ. key to stop playback.

Press the STOP/EJ. key to open the cassette door.

Lift the cassette out of the loading door.

Close the cassette loading door gently.

Playing a cassette:

Move the FUNCTION slide switch on the left side to select the TAPE/OFF position.

Load a cassette tape.

• Press the PLAY key.

The tape will begin to play. The player will switch off automatically when the tape has finished playing,

Pausing a cassette during play:

• Press the PAUSE key.

The key will latch down and playback will pause.

To re-start tape playback, press the PAUSE key again.

Fast forward and reverse:

Press the F.FWD or RWD key to move quickly forwards or backwards to a different position on the cassette tape.

Press the STOP/EJ. key to cancel fast forward or reverse.

NOTE:- The automatic shut off feature will not operate for fast forward or reverse functions. Always wait by the unit when using these functions and switch off manually if the end of the cassette is reached. The unit may be damaged if fast forward or reverse is left to run unattended.

Recording from the CD player, flash media or radio:

Using the record function, you can record a radio program or from CD/MP3/USB/SD onto a cassette tape.

• Select the function that you want to record from (CD/

MP3/USB/SD or radio).

• Load the cassette tape that you want to use for the recording.

• Press the PAUSE key

The key will lock down.

• Press the REC key.

The PLAY key will also lock down automatically.

The player is now paused, ready to record.

• If recording from a CD, start the CD playing. If recording

• from the radio, wait until the moment the program begins.

Press the PAUSE key to begin recording.

To pause a recording while it is in progress, press the

PAUSE key at any time.

When you have finished recording, press the STOP/EJ. key to cancel record mode.

Protecting a tape from accidental recording:

You can protect a cassette from accidental over-recording as follows -

• Hold the cassette with the side you want to protect facing you.

• Using a small screwdriver, break out the tab at the left of the cassette as shown.

• It will not now be possible to depress the recording button if an attempt is made to record on this side of the tape.

NOTE:- The recording function can be re-enabled if required by sticking adhesive tape over the slot in the tape.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Poor quality radio reception

The aerial signal may not be adequate. Try repositioning the telescopic aerial (FM band) or rotating the unit (AM band).

Skipping when playing a CD/CD-ROM

The CD playing surface may be dirty or marked with finger prints. Try cleaning the CD with a CD cleaner.

Music files from a computer will not play

The music files may not be a compatible format. Check that they are MP3 or WMA format.

The music files may be protected WMA files. If so, these will be skipped during play.

Poor quality sound when playing cassettes

The cassette tape head may be dirty. Use a tape head cleaning kit to clean the tape head.

The cassette RECORD key will not depress

The cassette may be a pre-recorded music cassette or another cassette with the record protection tab removed. Use a different cassette for the recording or use adhesive tape to defeat the record protection (see page 10).

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

CARE AND CLEANING

All care and cleaning operations should be carried out with the unit unplugged from the mains power.

The surface of the unit can be cleaned with a barely damp cloth and then dried carefully. Never use abrasives, abrasive cloths or chemical solvents .
