There was but few changes reported yesterday in
the merchandise market. There is a good demand
forChina Rice, and some grades were marked np.
Sales daring the week have been large, and there is
a good demand for export account. Several thousand bags China MixedRice have been purchased for
fhipment by the omgoing steamer to Central and
Sonth America. Stocks ofChina Nut are heavy, and
prices slightlylower. None of the Balmon canneries
are yet at work, as the run of Fish in the Sacramento
River ie cot yet sufficiently large to justify beginning operations. One local pack sold ahead at $1 15
per dozen. Is said to bave been resold at an advance
of 2He per doz. Canneries on the Columbia Blrer
bave not yet commenced operations, owing to a
strike of the fishermen. The market is wellsupplied
withother kiud* of Fisu, received in lar^e quantities from the East dariug the low freight period.
J. W. Harrison in his werkly review of the Coal and
Iron market 6ays : The arrivals of Coal this week
have been from Great Britain aud Australia, 2,689
tons; from the const collieries, 17,10(1 tons. There
are no special changes to note this week, and but few
sales ere Ieing made from $nt han4s. still the list of
foreign cargoes t*ing loaded and entered outward
for this port is being daily augmented, which insures
a continuance of lo .-priced fuel for manufacturing
and domestic purposes durfDg ISBS. The outlook for
Coal being piacpd on the free list in the coming revision ofthe tariff i4uot very encouraging; its pasfe&ge would be a marked incentive to local manufacturers, and indirectly a bnu^fit to our farming interests, as the greater freight received by Coal
carriers
inwards would enable them to transport our cereals
outward at a low figure. The abrogation of the duty
would have that teudorcy. The number of vessels
loading and toload at Australian ports is nnprecedently large ;the very lightnrrivals from there for
the past two months have almost cleaned np the local
stock. Ironis participating in the general statnationof b -siness. The facilities we have for melting
Iron are fully four times pr^ater than the quantity
consumed, cad when cont.-acts are open to competition, the lnnrgin of profit to the successful bidder
is
very light.

The old steamer Dakota received ballast yesterday
and willdischarge the coal ballast which has been in
her for two years. She is being stripped of nggitig.boats, etc., which can be need on other vessels,
and her hullwill be sold and turned into a sailingvessel of some description.
The Victoria Standard of May Ist says: Captain
Carroll while in Seattle purchased the little hull of a
steamer recently built by Antone Edstrom. The
Captain willtake this hull to Alaska on the first trip
of the Ancon. He has a boiler and engine there
which he willplace in the craft, when sho willbecome a very nsef al little boat for those Northern
waters.
The mail contract for carrying the mails from
Port Townsend to Sltka, via Loring, Wrangel,
Jonean and Killisnoo for fosr years, from and after
July let, ISS6, has been let to the Pacific Const
Steamship Company at $9,000 per annum. The
department declines
to order a semi-monthly
service.
Maritime Law. The following is & recent decision concerning Salvage— Vessel Without Navigator
—Salvor Baying His Own LifeinAct of Salving.
Hoffschlld et al. vs. the BrigantineF. I.Merryman,
&C.—U. S. District Court, Eastern District of New
York.
While the brigaiitine Merryman was on a voyage
from feat hurst to Boston, her captain and mates
died, leaving the crew alone on board, nsne of
whom were capable of navigating the vessel. While
being sailed by the cook and steward on a general
course given them by the captain before he died,
she fellinwith the bark Scalla, which was in a
sinking condition and without boats. Both vessels,
hoisted signals of distress. The captain and crew
of the Scalla then abandoned their vessel and went
on board of the Herryman, which the captain of
the Scalla took charge of and brought safely to port.
Libels were thereafter filed against the Merryman
by the captain and crew of the Scalla for salvage.
The Merryman with her cargo was worth fifty
thousand dollars. Held, that as the Merryman was
in want of a navigator, the service rendered her by
thß captain of the Scalla was a salvage service, and
his claim was not defeated by the fact that insalving the Merryman he was probably saving his own
life;$1,000 should, therefore, be allowed him as
salvage; but the services rendered the Merryman
by the crew of the Scalla were not salvage services,
and their libels should, therefore, be dismissed.
