This instruction bulletin contains minimum requirements for mounting 400 A
through 3000 A drawout SE circuit breakers in enclosures.
NOTE: This bulletin is intended for original equipment manufacturers. It is not intended for
field installations in existing facilities. Refer to bulletin 48040-495 for operating instructions.

The compartment size depends on the sensor (frame) size of the SE circuit breaker.
It is recommended that tests be conducted per UL 891 if any one or a combination
of the following conditions exist (Figure 1 lists minimum compartment sizes):

Four line labels (A80254-127-01) and two load labels (A80254-127-02) are included
in the SE cradle assembly. These labels must be affixed to the plastic bus supports
beside the appropriate terminals. See Figure 2 for location of the terminal labels.
TERMINAL MARKING
LABELS
NOTE: Because the line (supply) side terminals will remain energized with the circuit breaker
removed, it is important that the labels properly mark which terminals are line terminals.
When the SE circuit breaker is used as a main, feeder, or branch breaker, use two
line labels and two load labels, and discard the remaining two line labels.
On a multiple source tie system, either set of terminals may be line side terminals.
In this situation, use four line labels to indicate that either set of terminals may be
energized, and discard the load labels.
WARNING LABEL
One warning label (A80254-126-01) is included in the SE cradle assembly. Affix this
label to the front side of the front arc barrier as shown in Figure 2.
ARCING CLEARANCE
As illustrated in Figure 2, the rear arc barrier is mounted to an angle that is part of
the cradle assembly. Mount the top arc barrier to the rear arc barrier with four
angle brackets. Mount the front arc barrier to the top arc barrier with three angle
brackets. The top, rear, and front arc barriers must be made of 3/16 in. (4.76 mm)
thick insulating material with a UL 94V-0 flammability rating. These barriers
isolate arcing during an interruption. For minimum barrier dimensions and
locations, refer to Figure 2 and Detail A. For minimum distance from the center of
the cradle to both sides of the compartment (dimension “X”), see Figure 2.

ENCLOSURE
VENTILATION

SE enclosures up to 1600 A do not require ventilation. SE enclosures 2000 A require
154 in2 of ventilation on the front of the enclosure. Place half (77 in2) of the
ventilation at the top, and half at the bottom of the enclosure.
SE enclosures 2500 A through 3000 A require 308 in2 of ventilation. Place equal
amounts of ventilation (154 in2) at the top and bottom of the front and rear of the
enclosure.
Ventilation requirements are based on one SE circuit breaker per enclosure. If more
than one device is mounted in an enclosure, it is recommended that tests be
conducted per UL 891.
An SE drawout circuit breaker cover must have at least three 1/4-20 securing
screws on each side. See Figure 3.

WIRING HARNESS
The wiring harness is the same for all ampere ratings and is supplied with the
cradle assembly. The following are recommendations for mounting a 42 in.
(1067 mm) wiring harness in a 36 in. (914 mm) wide or wider enclosure. See
“Wiring Harness and Connector Detail” on page 5 for illustration.
1. The wiring harness assembly should be mounted to the SE cradle assembly in
four places (locations A, B, C, D).
2. Place spring nuts over the two remaining holes on the front right side of the
cradle assembly.
3. Mount the terminal strip mounting bracket to the cradle assembly with two
1/4-20 machine screws.
4. The wire bundle is mounted in three places with one wire tie and two cable
clamps, and two 10-24x7/16" machine screws.
5. Route wiring harness through connector mounting plate from the front until
plug contacts mounting plate. Rotate harness until number 1 pin is located at
the top right hand position.
6. Align plug tabs with connector plate cutouts and insert plug. Push the plug
down until it rests on the bottom of the mounting plate slot and locks in place.
7. Use the 8-32x1/2" machine screw and lock washer to retain the plug in the
mounting plate (see “Wiring Harness and Connector Detail” on page 5).
NOTE: Insert the retaining screw from the rear. The retaining screw should insert above the
plug connector flange. Inserting the retaining screw through any portion of the plug molding
will result in breakage (see “Wiring Harness and Connector Detail” on page 5). All mounting
hardware for the 42 in. (1067 mm) wiring harness is supplied with the cradle assembly.
If the wiring harness length is more than 42 in. (1067 mm) or the section width is
less than 36 in. (914 mm) an alternative mounting means for the terminal block is
required.

Circuit breakers must be bussed per the sensor (frame) size. All bus bars and lug
landings (bussing) must be supported by means other than the cradle assembly.
The cradle assembly is not designed to support the bussing. Excessive weight on
the cradle assembly will affect the connection between the breaker and the cradle
assembly.

Table 2 lists the minimum size of terminal extensions required for 2500 and 3000 A
circuit breaker sensor (frame) sizes. These terminal extensions must be 11 in.
(279 mm) in length. Place extensions on each side of cradle bus as shown in
Detail D. All other bussing connectors are to be sized per UL 891. Figure 8 shows
the possible configurations for the terminal extensions. Terminal extensions are not
required on 2000 A and below circuit breaker sensor (frame) sizes. Bussing may be
run straight back from the cradle terminals on these lower amperages. Bussing to
be sized per UL 891.

WIRE SIZE AND WIRE
BENDING
Circuit breakers 3000 A must use 90 °C insulated wire. Wire must be sized per
NEC® 75 °C Table 310-16. Circuit breakers 200 A through 2500 A may use 75 °C
insulated wire per NEC Table 310-16. Use UL 891 and NEC for wire bending
requirements. Adequate conduit entry area must be available.
LIFTING THE CRADLE
ASSEMBLY
Two large elongated holes are located on the upper rear of the cradle assembly side
plates for lifting. Use either hooks or a strap to lift the cradle assembly. If hooks are
used, a spreader bar must be used. If a strap is used, the strap must be positioned
to go through the lifting holes and over the top of the cradle bussing with a
spreader bar between the strap. See Figure 9 for both lifting methods. The
approximate weight of the cradle assembly is 225 lbs.
NOTE: Do not install the SE drawout circuit breaker into the cradle assembly until the cradle
assembly is installed in the enclosure, because the weight of the circuit breaker will affect the
balance of the cradle assembly while being lifted.
