INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for
GM EXTERNAL HEI
ADAPTER HARNESS
Part Number 6000-8876
CAUTION: READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE STARTING INSTALLATION
INTRODUCTION
5. Connect the HI-6 battery, ground, cylinder select, and
stage limit and retard (if used) wires as explained in the
HI-6 installation instructions. Tape up the magnetic trigger harness and green tach wire. Make sure the leads
in the magnetic trigger harness cannot short to each
other.
GM External HEI Adapter Harness part number 60008876 facilitates installation of Crane HI-6 and HI-6S ignition systems in late model GM vehicles with dual plug
external HEI coils. The adapter plugs directly into the GM
wire harness and ignition coil and allows hookup of the HI6 or HI-6S without having to cut and splice wires.
HI-6S INSTALLATION
WARNING: Do not perform any work or
disconnect any part of the ignition
system without first disconnecting the
battery ground cable.
1. Refer to Figure 2. Locate the GM coil and unplug the
two GM plugs from the coil.
2. Install the adapter plug with orange and black wires
into the coil. Note that the adapter plug is keyed and
can only be installed in the orientation shown.
3. Connect the two adapter plugs with red and white
wires to the GM wire harness plugs that were removed
in step 1. The plugs are keyed to prevent improper mating.
WARNING: Do not come into contact
with the coil primary wires or the secondary plug wires while the engine is
running. Do not connect a timing light or
other test equipment to any coil terminal
while the engine is running. Never
crank the engine with the coil high
voltage terminal disconnected.
4. Connect the HI-6S wires to the adapter harness as
shown. Use ¼” male and female quick disconnects.
Note that a “Y” jumper as shown in Figure 2 is supplied
to facilitate the hookup.
5. Connect the HI-6S ground, cylinder select, stage limit,
and retard wires as explained in the HI-6S installation
instructions.
CRANE LX OR PS SERIES COIL
INSTALLATION
HI-6 INSTALLATION
1. Refer to Figure 1. Locate the GM coil and unplug the
two GM plugs from the coil.
When installing a Crane LX or PS series ignition coil
with the 6000-8876 adapter harness, cut the orange and
black wires as close as possible to the coil connector on
the adapter harness. Strip each wire approximately ¼”
from the end and install the connector supplied with the
coil. Note that the orange wire goes to COIL+ and the
black wire goes to COIL-.
4. Connect the HI-6 wires to the adapter harness as
shown. Use ¼” male and female quick disconnects.
