Carbon Monoxide Alarm Guide
This CO detector guide has been produced to help Operatives identify the status of an alarm to ensure the correct action is taken when called to a potential CO activation. Relevant information has been extracted from the user manuals to help assist with the identification of the operating mode of CO detectors that you may encounter so you can establish the correct action to take.
If you encounter an alarm that is not included within this guide then you can check the availability of the instructions with the end user. Where an alarm is sounding and you cannot identify the mode then always take the safest course of action by making the situation safe and advising the consumer to have the appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered installer.
All CO detectors manufactured for the UK market have to meet the requirements of BS EN 50291. This standard sets the minimum requirements for the design and manufacturer of CO detector . More recent detectors have enhanced functionality, such as LCD displays that provide a greater level of information to the homeowner.
Placement Of CO detectors
Correct location of the CO detector is an important to ensure the CO detector is operating in an effective zone and helps to eliminate false activations.
The recommendation for the placement of a CO detector is:
in every room that contains a fuel burning appliance,
at least 300 mm from any wall (for ceiling mounted alarms)
at least 150 mm from the ceiling, above the height of any door or window (for wall mounted alarms)
between 1 and 3 m (measured horizontally) from the potential source of CO
CO Detectors must not be placed in the following:
in an enclosed space,
where it can be obstructed,
directly above a sink,
next to a door, window, extractor fan, air vent or similar ventilation opening,
where the temperature may drop below –5 ºC or exceed 40 ºC.
Where a premises has multiple fuel burning appliances in different rooms, the standard recommends that if there are restrictions in placing an alarm in each room that the priority should be given to putting a detector in rooms containing flueless or open-flued appliances.
CO Detectors are designed to sound a continual audible alarm when the following criteria is met:
CO Concentration Without Alarm Before
30 PPM
50 PPM
100 PPM
300 PPM
120 mins
60 mins
10 mins
-
With Alarm Before
-
90 mins
40 mins
3 mins
Where a detector activates when the above criteria is met then the alarm must continue to sound until the CO PPM readings drop below 50 PPM. When the CO reading drops below this threshold then the alarm should stop alerting within 10 minutes. The CO detection functionality on an alarm is still operating even when the detector is indicating low battery.
Many new detectors contain an LCD display, which indicates the highest PPM reading obtained. This value is displayed even when the alarm stops activating, however it is important to note that the display can be reset therefore removing any information on activation.
Dual Mode CO detectors
It is becoming more common to encounter alarms that have a dual mode, typically these are combined with smoke alarms in a single unit. In some cases they may also contain other functions, such as panic alerts for elderly customers.
Even when you encountered a combined unit the CO element of the alarm must operate independently of any other mode and this must comply with the mimum requirements set out in the CO alarm standard.
