d&b E-Series
The d&b System reality
As the name implies a d&b system is not just a loudspeaker.
Nor is it merely a sum of the components: loudspeakers, control
electronics, mechanical accessories and remote control. Right
from the outset the d&b audiotechnik approach was to build
integrated sound reinforcement systems that were more than the
sum of their parts. Each element is tightly specified, precisely
aligned and carefully integrated to achieve maximum possible
performance, along with neutral sound characteristics. At the same
time d&b offers integrated training, technical information, expert
service and support, as well as a knowledgeable distribution
network, so that the same optimal acoustic result is achieved by
every system anywhere, at any time.
d&b E-Series

The E-Series
The d&b audiotechnik E-Series comprises some of the smallest
loudspeakers within the product range. These are predominantly
used for speech and music reinforcement in theatres, conferences,
industrial presentations, broadcast studios and as surround sound,
delay and fill systems. Their highly compact and unobtrusive
design makes them visually discreet and yet with a combination
of accurate directivity control, extended bass response and
appropriate sound pressure levels, they are audibly impressive
for such small loudspeakers. Ingenious design incorporates all
the necessary fittings into small, lightweight enclosures, making
the E-Series incredibly quick and easy to handle. The E-Series
loudspeakers, together with the d&b amplifiers and the d&b
Remote network, delivers the d&b specific combination of a
neutral, intelligible sound character that is clear and transparent
even for the smallest systems at high sound pressure levels
providing the engineer with an efficient effortless tool and a
neutral platform.
The unique approach of d&b is based on a holistic view of the
interaction between loudspeakers, electronics, software and
mechanical accessories. To fully realize the deployment potential
of the E-Series, data resources are available for system design
use and the broad portfolio of mounting accessories is designed
to comply with the world's most stringent standards.
The complete E-Series is a range of five small to medium sized
point source loudspeakers of a multifaceted moulded construction
to achieve the maximum deployment versatility. They utilize direct
radiating low frequency elements with coaxially mounted high
frequency sections. A distinctive aspect of the coaxial design is
the accurate directivity control it provides, particularly in the critical
midrange that is so vital for voice reproduction, which is extremely
useful in distributed systems with larger distances to the audience.
The E-Series loudspeakers are complimented by three direct
radiating subwoofers, the largest of which offers an integrated
cardioid performance.
The E4 and E5 are the littlest loudspeakers in the E-Series which
are specifically suited for near field applications and have
coaxially mounted 4" and 5" LF drivers respectively and an HF
dome tweeter. They produce a wide symmetrical directivity up to
very high frequencies and consequently both the E4 and E5
deliver the same performance characteristic whether mounted
horizontally or vertically.
The E6, larger E8 and even larger E12/E12-D are high
performance multipurpose loudspeakers utilizing a patented
coaxial horn assembly that can be rotated without the need for
any special tools permitting changes to the dispersion angle
enabling deployment of these loudspeakers either vertically or
horizontally. Their distinctive cabinet design and extensive range
of accessories allow easy deployment in almost any situation,
including stage monitoring. The E6 and E8 employ a 6.5” and

8” coaxial driver respectively with an HF compression driver
mounted on the unique rotatable horn assembly. Compared to the
E4 and E5, the slightly larger E6 has a greater SPL to size ratio
yet still provides a very compact reinforcement solution that inspires
through its sound quality and is also perfectly compatible with
the larger E8 and E12. The E8’s sound pressure level capabilities
when coupled with a subwoofer can realize ambitious application
possibilities. The E12 shares the same physical, acoustical and
mechanical design as the smaller E8. The larger cabinet volume
and a 12” LF driver provide a warm and full low frequency
extension and higher power capabilities. All other aspects of the
loudspeaker are quite simply scaled, allowing exactly the same
broad range of application possibilities. The E12-D is a wider
dispersion version of the E12 loudspeaker.
The E12X-SUB and E15X-SUB are lightweight, low profile,
bass-reflex subwoofers utilizing 12” and 15” long excursion drivers
respectively. They can be operated in two modes, an active mode
with a dedicated amplifier configuration, or passively using the
internal crossover connected in parallel with either an E8
loudspeaker for the E12X-SUB or an E12 loudspeaker for the
E15X-SUB driven from a single amplifier channel. Both are ideal
for permanent or mobile use in small and medium sized venues
or where space is restricted.
The B4-SUB is a compact high performance cardioid subwoofer
utilizing two long excursion neodymium drivers in an integrated
cardioid setup: a 15” driver in bass-reflex design facing to
the front and a 12” driver in a two chamber bandpass design
radiating to the rear. This passive cardioid design can be operated
from a single amplifier channel.
All subwoofers employ d&b SenseDrive technology when driven
by the D12 amplifer.
The d&b D6 and D12 dual channel amplifiers realize the
complete system. They provide two different power ranges,
incorporate d&b loudspeaker specific configuration information,
including the E-Series loudspeakers and have analog and digital
signal inputs and links. These devices are specially designed and
manufactured by d&b utilizing Digital Signal Processing and
include switchable functions for precisely tailoring system response
for a wide variety of applications. A user definable 4-band
parametric equalizer and a delay capability is provided in every
amplifier channel to reduce the need for external processing
devices. The D12 amplifier additionally offers a 2-Way Active
mode and a MIX TOP/SUB output configuration, output
connector options as well as d&b SenseDrive.
The D6 and D12 amplifiers have d&b Remote network
interfaces enabling control and monitoring of a large number of
system functions and extensive system integration capabilities.
d&b Load monitoring and System check are also incorporated to
remotely monitor loudspeaker driver status.

The E4 is a lightweight 2-way passive loudspeaker using a
neodymium LF driver and a coaxially mounted wide dispersion
dome tweeter. The E4's coaxial design employs a 4” driver in a
highly compact sealed enclosure and offers a wide symmetrical
dispersion pattern in the horizontal and vertical plane while the
cabinet may be mounted in either attitude.
It can be used stand-alone or supplemented by different
subwoofers from the E-Series.
The enclosure is injection moulded with an impact resistant paint
finish. The front of the loudspeaker cabinet is protected by a
rigid metal grill and incorporated into the rear panel is an M10
threaded insert to accept the Ball joint adapter.

The E5 is a lightweight 2-way passive loudspeaker using a ferrite
LF driver and a coaxially mounted wide dispersion dome tweeter.
The E5's coaxial design employs a 5” driver in a compact
bass-reflex enclosure and offers a wide symmetrical dispersion
pattern in the horizontal and vertical plane while the cabinet may
be mounted in either attitude.
It can be used stand-alone or supplemented by different
subwoofers from the E-Series.

The E6 loudspeaker
E6 loudspeaker
The E6 is a high performance 2-way multipurpose loudspeaker
employing an integrated coaxial driver with a neodymium
magnet assembly. The 1" exit HF compression driver and constant
directivity horn are accommodated within the circumference of
the 6.5" LF driver. The horn with its 100° x 55° dispersion pattern
(h x v) can easily be rotated through 90° without the use of tools
to provide a 55° x 100° dispersion pattern.
The E6 can be used for speech and music applications as a
stand-alone full range system, or incorporated into larger
distributed sound reinforcement situations. It can be mounted on
loudspeaker stands or flown from overhead bars, while the
multifaceted shape of the enclosure allows use either in a vertical
or horizontal orientation as well as deployment as a stage monitor.
With the addition of an E12X-SUB or any other E-Series subwoofer,
the E6 can also reproduce high level music program.
The E6 cabinet has an impact resistant paint finish. The front is
protected by a magnetically attached rigid metal grill backed
by an acoustically transparent fabric. The grill can easily be
removed without tools to modify the horn orientation. The cabinet
incorporates a handle.

The E8 is a high performance 2-way multipurpose loudspeaker

The E12/E12-D loudspeakers
E12/E12-D loudspeakers
The E12 and E12-D are high performance 2-way multipurpose
loudspeakers employing an integrated coaxial driver with a
neodymium magnet assembly. The 1.3" exit HF compression driver
and constant directivity horn are accommodated within the
circumference of the 12" LF driver. The E12 has an 80° x 50°
dispersion pattern (h x v), while the E12-D has a wider 110° x 50°
pattern. The horns in both loudspeakers are easily rotatable
through 90° without the use of tools, providing 50° x 80° or
50° x 110° dispersion patterns.
The E12 and E12-D can be used for speech and music applications
as a stand-alone full range system, or incorporated into larger
distributed sound reinforcement situations. They can be mounted
on loudspeaker stands or flown from overhead bars, while the
multifaceted shape of the enclosure allows use either in a vertical
or horizontal orientation as well as deployment as a stage
monitor. With the addition of an E15X or B4 subwoofer, the E12
and E12-D loudspeakers can also easily reproduce high level
music program.
The E12 and E12-D cabinets are constructed from polyurethane

E12X subwoofer
The E12X-SUB is a compact, light weight, high performance
subwoofer for use with d&b E-Series loudspeakers. It employs a
long excursion 12“ neodymium driver in a bass-reflex enclosure.
The built in passive crossover network allows the E12X-SUB to be
connected in parallel to the E8 loudspeaker on the same amplifier
channel, greatly extending the low frequency headroom and
bandwidth of the systems. As an alternative it can be operated
actively, driven by its own amplifier channel without the need for
any changes to the cabinet. In active mode the E12X-SUB can be
used to supplement any of the E-Series cabinets.
The E12X-SUB cabinet is constructed from marine plywood and
has an impact resistant paint finish, a handle and an M20
threaded flange on the top to accept the d&b Loudspeaker stand
winder M20. The front of the loudspeaker cabinet is protected by
a rigid metal grill backed by an acoustically transparent foam.
Four rubber feet prevent cabinet movement and protect the bottom
panel against scratching. Correspondingly shaped recesses are
incorporated in the top panel of each cabinet to accept these
and to prevent cabinet movement when stacked.

The E15X-SUB is a compact, light weight, high performance

B4 subwoofer
The B4-SUB is an actively driven cardioid subwoofer powered
by a single amplifier channel. It houses two long excursion
neodymium drivers in an integrated cardioid setup: a 15“ driver
in a bass-reflex design facing to the front and a 12” driver in a
two chamber bandpass design radiating to the rear. The cardioid
dispersion pattern resulting from this approach avoids unwanted
energy behind the system that greatly reduces the reverberant
field at low frequencies and provides the greatest accuracy of
low frequency reproduction. The B4 subwoofer can only be used
in a ground stacked configuration.
The B4-SUB cabinet is constructed from marine plywood and has
an impact and weather resistant paint finish and a pair of handles.
An M20 threaded flange in the top panel accepts the d&b
Loudspeaker stand winder M20. The front of the loudspeaker
cabinet is protected by a rigid metal grill backed by an acoustically
transparent foam. Two runners extend from the rear to the front
panel of the cabinet protecting the bottom panel against scratching.
Two correspondingly shaped recesses are incorporated in the top
panel of each cabinet that accept these runners to prevent cabinet
movement when stacked.

The E4 and E5 cases
The E7460 Touring case is also supplied with four extra 'E4 foam
insert sets' each comprising two bottom inserts and one upright
divider. These insert sets enable each of the E5 compartments
to be transformed to accommodate two E4 loudspeakers. A set
can either be permanently fixed in place or used as and when
required. The photographs below show two examples of how the
case can be converted.

The Weather Resistant and Special Colour options
The E-Series cabinets are also available with a Weather Resistant
or Special Colour option. The B4-SUB cabinet is only available in
the Special Colour option. When one of these options is requested,
the E6, E8, E12 and E12-D loudspeakers are subsequently supplied
with metal plates where the handles and threaded flange would
have been and coloured if requested. Both options can be
combined.
Weather Resistant (WR) option
The WR option enables operation in changing ambient conditions;
however it is not intended to enable permanent, unprotected
operation of loudspeakers outdoors. An additional cover should
be positioned over any of these loudspeakers, when used outdoors.
The E-Series cabinets with the WR option are supplied with a
fixed input cable (type H-07-RN-F 2 x 2.5 mm2/AWG 13). The
E4 and E5 are weather protected and suitable for outdoor use
as standard.

Special Colour (SC) option
The SC option is available in all colours of the RAL colour table.
The acoustically transparent foam or fabric fitted behind the rigid
metal grill is also painted with the requested RAL colour. The SC
version is supplied with NL4 connectors.

The D6 and D12 amplifiers
The D6 and D12 are dual channel amplifiers developed and
manufactured by d&b utilizing Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to
incorporate loudspeaker specific configuration information and
functions. These are designed for use with d&b loudspeakers,
have both digital and analog signal inputs as well as link outputs,
remote control and monitoring capabilities and switch mode power
supplies. The level control incorporates a digital rotary encoder
enabling selection of all operating modes in conjunction with a
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).
Loudspeaker specific configurations for current d&b loudspeakers
and a linear mode are contained within them, the exception
being that the D6 does not include 2-Way Active, V-Series and
B2-SUB configurations.
The digital elements of the D6 and D12 are specified and
constructed to achieve the best possible audio performance while
maintaining a very low latency of 0.3 msec. The Digital Signal
Processing is used to provide the loudspeaker specific configurations,
sophisticated protection circuits modelling thermal and mechanical
driver behaviour, and switch functions.
User definable equalization and delay functions are incorporated
in each channel of the amplifiers and can be used for applications
such as front fills or under balcony delays without the need for
external processors. The signal delay capability allows delay
settings of up to 340 msec. (= 100 m /328 ft) to be applied
independently to each channel as can the 4-band parametric
equalizer, providing optional Boost /Cut or Notch filtering. A
signal generator offering pink noise or sine wave program is also
incorporated for test and alignment purposes. Every unit can be
given a unique Device Name to simplify identification and a
password protected LOCK function is also incorporated to prevent
unauthorized changes.
The D6 and D12 amplifiers also detect incoming Pilot signals at
its input (Input monitoring) and can use Load monitoring and
System check functions to determine the status of the loudspeaker
impedance. d&b System check is designed to verify that the
system performs within a predefined condition and can be used
to report the system condition after a show.
D6
d&b Load monitoring, on the other hand, enables automatic and
continuous impedance monitoring and along with Input monitoring
is designed for incorporation within applications specified to the
requirements stated in the International Standard IEC 60849
‘Sound Systems for Emergency Purposes’. Both can determine the
status of an LF or HF driver in systems with multiple elements,
even if these are crossed over passively.
The D6 utilizes a switch mode power supply with PFC suitable for
mains supply voltages 100 V/115 V/200 V/230 V, 50 - 60 Hz
whilst the D12 utilizes an autosensing switch mode power supply
for mains voltages 115/230 V, 50 - 60 Hz (optional 100/200 V).
Both power supplies have overvoltage protection and each
amplifier has a temperature and signal controlled fan to cool the
internal assemblies.
The 2 RU lightweight D6 is specifically designed to deliver medium
power into low impedance loads between 4 and 16 ohms. The
3 RU D12 is specifically designed to produce high power into
low impedance loads, typically those between 4 and 16 ohms.
Due to differences in impedance response against frequency, the
maximum number of cabinets driven by each D12 channel varies
depending on the loudspeaker type.
Apart from selectable output configurations for dual channel, Mix
TOP/SUB and 2-Way Active mode, the D12 also provides d&b
SenseDrive for use with the LF drivers in d&b active loudspeakers
and subwoofers.
Both amplifiers house an I/O panel containing: analog signal
inputs with link outputs for each channel, an AES/EBU digital
input with a link output and NL4 loudspeaker outputs. The D12
I/O panel additionally offers the options of EP5 or NL8
loudspeaker outputs. The two RJ 45 REMOTE sockets at the rear
of the D6 and the D12 amplifiers integrate them into the d&b
Remote network via CAN-Bus, enabling remote control and/or
monitoring.
A USB-B (D6) or a SUB-D9 (D12) SERVICE interface is provided
to enable future firmware updates containing new loudspeaker
configurations or additional functions to be loaded to the units.

The operation with D6 and D12 amplifiers
CUT mode
Set to CUT, the cabinet low frequency level is reduced and is
configured for use with d&b active subwoofers.
HFA mode
In HFA mode (High Frequency Attenuation), the HF response is
rolled off. The HFA provides a natural, balanced frequency
response when a unit is placed close to listeners in near field or
delay use. HFA begins gradually at 1 kHz, dropping by
approximately 3 dB at 10 kHz. This roll off mimics the decline in
frequency response experienced when listening to a system from
a distance in a typically reverberant room or auditorium.
CPL function
The CPL (Coupling) function compensates for coupling effects
between closely coupled cabinets by reducing the low and mid
frequency level. CPL begins gradually at 1 kHz, with maximum
attenuation below 250 Hz (200 Hz for E4 and E5), providing a
balanced frequency response when cabinets are used in arrays
of two or more. The CPL function can be set in dB attenuation
values between –9 and 0, or a positive CPL value which creates
an adjustable low frequency boost (0 to +5 dB).
Passive operation of E15X-SUB in parallel to
E12/E12-D
The E12-X or E12-DX configurations in the D6 and D12 dual
channel amplifiers should be selected when E12 or E12-D
loudspeakers are used in combination with E15X-SUB loudspeakers
in passive mode driven from one amplifier channel. Compared
to the standard E12 and E12-D configurations, the E12-X and
E12-DX configurations provide a dedicated correction for the
combined frequency response of the loudspeaker and subwoofer.
Selecting the E12-X or E12-DX configurations enables a combination
of one E12/E12-D and one E15X-SUB loudspeakers to be driven
by the respective channel.
d&b SenseDrive
The D12 incorporates d&b SenseDrive for accurate control of
LF drivers in d&b loudspeakers driven 2-Way Active or in d&b
subwoofers driven actively, resulting in an extremely precise bass
performance, even at high levels. SenseDrive is only available
using a D12 fitted with EP5 connectors and appropriate 5-wire
cabling. For further information please refer to the d&b TI 340
SenseDrive, which is available for download at www.dbaudio.com.
100 Hz mode
If the 100 Hz mode is selected, the upper operating frequency of
the system is reduced to 100 Hz. This setting allows the subwoofer
to supplement top cabinets in full range mode.
140 Hz mode
For acoustic adjustment the 140 Hz mode can be selected. When
the 140 Hz mode is selected, the upper operating frequency of
the system is raised to 140 Hz. This may be selected to supplement
E-Series loudspeakers operating in CUT mode, when the coupling
of the systems requires more energy in this frequency band.
Passive operation of E12X-SUB in parallel to E8
The E8-X configuration in the D6 and D12 dual channel amplifiers
should be selected when an E8 loudspeaker is used in combination
with E12X subwoofers in passive mode driven from one amplifier
channel. Compared to the standard E8 configuration, the E8-X
configuration provides a dedicated correction for the combined
frequency response of the loudspeaker and subwoofer. Selecting
the E8-X configuration enables a combination of up to three E8
and E12X-SUBs to be driven by the respective channel.

The d&b Remote network
d&b Remote network
The d&b Remote network enables central control and monitoring
of a complete d&b loudspeaker system from anywhere in the
network, be it from a PC in the control room, at the mix position,
or on a wireless tablet PC in the auditorium.
This central access to all functions, controls and detailed system
information unlocks the full potential of the d&b system approach.
Extensive monitoring and diagnostics enable detailed examination
of the system performance. Control can be undertaken on individual
loudspeakers, on multiple groups of loudspeakers or formed into
groups that address the complete system.
The flexibility and scalability of this approach, coupled with the
inclusion of several types of interfaces, allow the d&b Remote
network to be deployed to address the differing control and
monitoring requirements in a broad variety of mobile and
installed applications, regardless of their size.
In mobile applications, system engineers may use the remote
network to verify and tune the system. System check and device
diagnostics enable detailed monitoring as and when required,
before, during, or after a show.
In installation projects system integrators can configure the remote
network to offer access to different levels of control tailored to
the operational demands. For example, simplified functionality for
daily use and more complex functionality when multiple applications
are required within one installation. Input and Load monitoring
coupled with automatic error messages allow installation operators
to ensure the optimum performance at all times.
d&b Remote interfaces
Every d&b amplifier is fitted with a Remote interface for the
Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus. Each D6 and D12 has two
REMOTE connectors (RJ 45) to enable the CAN-Bus signal to
be daisy chained through them. A simple d&b Remote network
application consists of a computer running R1 Remote control
software, an R60 USB to CAN interface, CAT 5 shielded twisted
pair cable with shielded RJ 45 connectors and d&b D6 or D12
amplifiers.
Up to five R60 USB to CAN interfaces can be operated with one
computer running R1, while a maximum of 504 amplifiers can be
incorporated into one application. The maximum bus cable length
of a d&b Remote network is 600 metres, see the adjoining table
for cable length examples. The R70 Ethernet to CAN interface can
be used for applications over longer distances, in conjunction with
a fibre optic network for example.

The d&b Remote software
R1 Remote control software
R1 Remote control software is a graphical drag and drop user
interface enabling the construction of a screen based virtual
control surface for d&b systems, using the d&b Remote network.
All major features, functions and controls available on the front
panel of the D6 and D12 amplifiers may be remotely controlled
and/or monitored using R1. The architecture of R1 allows control
of each channel of the amplifier as a single entity and enables
the creation of groups of loudspeakers in as little, or as much
detail as required by the user. When grouped together, a button or
fader can control the overall system level, zone level, equalization
and delay, power ON /OFF, MUTE and loudspeaker function
switches such as CUT/HFA /HFC or CPL.
R1 has extensive facilities for storing and recalling system settings
allowing these to be repeated, as and when required. It is easy to
adjust R1 project files for use with a different set of equipment at
another location. Password protection is available to restrict
access.
R1 runs on PCs operating Microsoft Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/71.
A virtual machine enables R1 to run on the newer Intel2 Mac3 in
parallel to the Mac OS3 X, using the Windows driver for R60
USB to CAN interface.
For older, Power PC based Mac computers, Windows emulation
needs to be used, together with the R60 driver for Mac /PPC. For
R70 Ethernet to CAN, no driver is needed.

as templates and the TI 391 describing the effective use of R1
are available for download at www.dbaudio.com.
R10 Service software
R10 Service software enables the simultaneous firmware update
of multiple amplifiers from a central location. Using R10,
AmpPresets can be adjusted to the application requirements.

Integration with media control
For integration of d&b audiotechnik loudspeaker systems into
media control applications, the R70 Ethernet to CAN interface

EN 60849 voice alarm applications
For remote control of voice alarm applications Programmable
Logic Controllers (PLCs) can be integrated into the d&b Remote
network.
