They provide full guidance to help you install your amplifier safely and correctly. Before installing the Stereo 200 check that the following items are included in the accessory box. • Power Cable • 2 MC-BUS cables • Ferrite clamp After removing these items, please retain the packaging. Install the amplifier in a well ventilated location away from sources of high temperature, dust or humidity. Never stand the amplifier under another unit or on any surface likely to hamper its cooling or ventilation. Speaker detection The Stereo 200 automatically measures the impedance of your speakers and adjusts its performance accordingly. The process takes a few seconds and only takes place on the first occasion that the amplifier is switched on after connection to the mains. NOTE: A faint noise may be heard through the speakers during optimisation. This is normal. Once the speakers have been measured, the results are stored until mains power is next disconnected. To ensure that this speaker optimisation runs correctly, follow these guidelines • Make all connections, including speakers, to the amplifier before connecting mains power. • Turn the system volume control to minimum when speaker optimisation is running. • If you change your speakers, disconnect the amplifier from mains power and re-connect it once the new speakers are connected. NOTE: The amplifier will not be damaged if you switch on before connecting the speakers, but performance may be compromised. 4 Cyrus Stereo 200 User Instructions Installation a b c a d e f SPEAKER SPEAKER RIGHT INPUT CHAIN WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED INPUT TRIGGER INPUT ATTENTION: CET APPAREIL DOIT ÊTRE BRANCHÉ À LA TERRE OUT h i IN g Key to the rear panel drawing 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. ight speaker output R Right channel balanced input Chain output Unbalanced RCA (phono) Input Left channel balanced input Left speaker output MC-BUS connections 12V trigger input IEC Power Inlet 5 LEFT INPUT MC-BUS MADE IN ENGLAND Cyrus Stereo 200 User Instructions Placement Important – read before making any audio connections When installing a Stereo 200 amplifier, choose a position where there is at least 3cm clearance from the sides and top of the amplifier to allow cooling air to circulate. Never stand the amplifier on a soft or carpeted surface or install the amplifier in an enclosed space or cabinet where cool air cannot enter. To avoid possible damage to your amplifier, it is essential to disconnect all system components from the mains supply before connecting or disconnecting audio interconnects. Connecting a Pre-Amplifier, Streamer or DAC NOTE: When connecting a streamer or DAC to a Stereo 200, ensure that it includes a volume control and use the ‘variable’ or ‘preamp’ output. Phono (RCA) d and Balanced input connectors b/e are available to link the Stereo 200 to a pre-amplifier, streamer or D/A converter etc. If your amplifier is a long distance from the pre-amplifier/ DAC, or beside a loudspeaker, then balanced XLR connections b/e may give improved performance. Connecting via phono (RCA) interconnects Connect a stereo phono interconnect from the output of the preamplifier to the left and right inputs d of the Stereo 200. Be sure to observe colour coding of the plugs to keep left and right channels correctly ordered. Connecting using Balanced XLR cables Connect a 3-pin XLR cable from the balanced outputs of the preamplifier to the left e and right b balanced inputs of the Stereo 200. 6 Cyrus Stereo 200 User Instructions Connecting Loudspeakers Connecting spade tags • Unscrew the knobs on the four speaker terminals a and f. • Fit each spade terminal under the knob of the correct terminal. • Tighten the knob securely. • Repeat these steps for the other terminals. • Check carefully that channel and cable polarities are correct. Connecting bare wire terminations • Unscrew the knobs on the four speaker terminals a and f. • If the cables are stranded, twist the cables before fitting them to the terminals. • Pass the cable ends through the cross-holes in the terminals. Check that there are no loose wire strands. • Tighten the knob securely. • Repeat these steps for the other terminals. • Check carefully that channel and cable polarities are correct. Connecting the cables to your speakers. • Refer to the speaker instructions for cable connection. Choice of speaker cables When choosing speaker cables, avoid litz-wound cables with a complex ‘plaited wire’ construction. These cables can be highly reactive and may degrade the sound of your amplifier. Always choose a cable of simple construction, manufactured from high quality materials and priced sensibly within the cabling budget of your system. If in doubt about the correct cable to choose, any Cyrus retailer will be able to advise. CAUTION: The speaker outlets are only suitable for connection directly to speakers. Never connect any switchbox or other device to the speaker outlets. Speaker cable polarity Speaker cables will always include polarising marks such as a rib or stripe to indicate the ‘+’ wire and red/black identifiers on the terminals. Ensure you connect the red terminal/ striped cable to the + terminals. Cable termination Speaker cables for use with the Stereo 200 may be terminated with spade tags or bare wire ends. Spade tags will give the best quality connection. Bare wire ends may be used, but very thin or highly stranded cables may be better with spade termination to protect the fragile cable end. This means that you can use the Stereo 200 in conjunction with any Cyrus amplifier for bi-amping, etc. without any set-up adjustments being required. Bi-Amplification If your pre-amplifier only has a single set of pre outputs, the Chain output c can be used to connect additional Cyrus power amplifiers to each channel for Bi/Tri-amping. Such a bi-amplified system provides the sonic benefits of totally separate power amplification for the bass and treble units of the loudspeakers. Note: To set up bi-amplification, the loudspeakers must have bi-wirable terminals to enable separate connection to the bass and treble units. In the bi-amplified system illustration below, a preamplifier is connected to two Stereo 200 amplifiers, one to drive the speaker bass (LF) units, and one to drive the treble (HF) units. Phono input connections are shown. Note: The Chain output is operational whether phono (RCA) or Balanced XLR input connection is made to the Stereo 200. Connecting MC-BUS An MC-BUS (Master Control) loop is established by connecting single phono cables from the MC-BUS output of one unit to the MC-BUS input of another in a daisy-chain. Complete the loop by returning the MC-BUS output of the final component to the MC-BUS input of the first (see example system connections below). With MC-BUS established you can control the power function of the system from the front panel or remote control of the main Cyrus amplifier. The Stereo 200 also includes a 12V trigger input for Home Cinema, multi-room and other non-Cyrus systems that use a 12V trigger signal to switch components to and from Standby. Connecting to a 12V trigger equipped system A 3.5mm jack cable will be required to set up 12V trigger operation. These are available in standard lengths or can be made up to a custom length. Once the cable is available, connect it between the 12V Trigger input h on the back of the Stereo 200 and a 12V trigger output on the Home Cinema receiver or other component that is controlling system power. Input indicator 4. Input selector key 11 Cyrus Stereo 200 User Instructions Power Control Input Indicator When power is first applied, the amplifier will initialise, then set to Standby. Power operation sequence It is always good practice to switch on the system control amplifier (preamplifier, streamer or DAC) first, then wait for a second before switching on the Stereo 200. This will avoid any unwanted switch-on noise from the loudspeakers. Follow the opposite sequence when switching off these components, switching off the Stereo 200, then waiting a second before switching off the control amplifier. NOTE: The above does not apply if MC-BUS is connected for automatic power control between Cyrus components. Power control from the front panel Press the STANDBY key a briefly to switch the amplifier between operational and standby modes. The Standby Indicator b will glow green when operational or red when set to Standby. First use When the amplifier is first switched on after connection to the mains, there will be a short delay while speaker performance is optimised. During this time the Standby Indicator will flash green. The indicator will stop flashing when optimisation is complete. NOTE: A faint noise may be heard through the speakers during optimisation. This is normal. Music sensing automatic power control Music sense power control can be enabled if required. To enable or disable Music sense, first set the amplifier to Standby, then press and hold the STANDBY key for two seconds. The Standby Indicator will flash red three times, then change colour to show the status of Music sense – orange when enabled or red when disabled. When Music sense is enabled, the amplifier will switch on automatically if a music signal is detected from the preamplifier, and set to Standby after 10 minutes of silence. The STANDBY key may also be used to switch the amplifier on if required, or to switch the amplifier back to Standby with Music sense enabled (Standby indicator will glow orange). A 12V trigger or any MC-BUS command cancels the Music sense function. The INPUT Indicator c will glow red when the output of the Stereo 200 is muted. This occurs for a few seconds following Standby operation or if a temporary overload condition arises. Selecting an Input The front panel INPUT key d selects RCA Phono or Balanced input connection. To change inputs, the amplifier must be switched on. Press and hold the INPUT key d until the INPUT indicator c changes colour as shown. INPUT Indicator colour Input selected Green Balanced Orange RCA Phono NOTE: The input setting will be retained when mains power is disconnected. NOTE: The music sense setting will be retained when mains power is disconnected. 12 Cyrus Stereo 200 User Instructions TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Your amplifier has a unique fault indication system to help you to diagnose problems. Fault condition messages will be displayed via the Standby indicator in the event of a system fault. If your Stereo 200 is not operating properly, disconnect the power and check all connections using the notes in this handbook. If problems persist, the checklist below may be helpful. If you are in doubt, consult your retailer. STANDBY indicator flashing red/green No sound from one or both speakers Check that the preamplifier and the Stereo 200 are switched on. Check that the correct amplifier input is selected. The standby lights should be green. The INPUT indicator will glow green for balanced input, orange for RCA/ phono. Check that the loudspeakers are connected. The connection at the terminals of the loudspeakers and the Stereo 200 should be checked. The amplifier has overheated. STANDBY indicator flashing orange/green The amplifier has been overloaded or the speaker connections have been short-circuited. NOTE: The Stereo 200 can detect a short-circuit whether music is playing or not. Distorted sound at very low volume The wrong input may be selected. The amplifier will mute then set to Standby. The error indication will clear when the amplifier cools. Press and hold the INPUT button to change the input. The input indicator will light orange for phono input or green for balanced input. Check that the speaker connections are correctly made with no possibility of a short-circuit. To return to normal operation, set the amplifier to Standby to clear the fault indication and switch back on. If the problem persists when playing music, the speaker impedance may be too low. Ensure that only speakers are connected to the speaker outputs. Switch boxes and other accessories are not suitable for connection. STANDBY indicator flashing red, green or red/orange The amplifier has detected an error. 13 Switch off the amplifier, disconnect it from the mains, wait 10 seconds and reconnect it. Check if the problem has cleared. If the fault indication persists, disconnect the amplifier and return it for service.
