WHAT’S NEW ON VOLT
Chevrolet leveraged its EV leadership
and Volt owners’ real-world
experiences to define today’s Volt
NEW FOR 2017:
• Available Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control can be added to Premier
models that also have the Driver Confidence II Package (late availability
on Adaptive Cruise Control)
• OnStar Guidance Plan1 with 6-month trial subscription
• Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ compatibility2 is the simple and
smart way to integrate your smartphone with your MyLink system
(late availability on Android Auto)
• Energy Usage Score on a new data screen indicates how efficiently
drivers use their EV range
• Federal Tier 3 emissions (replaces Tier 2)
Customer input helped us refine and reengineer the
Volt for 2016 and ’17. Here’s how today’s Volt delivers more:
• MORE RANGE: Up to EPA-estimated 53 EV miles3, up from 38 miles in the
first-generation Volt
• MORE EFFICIENCY: EPA-estimated 106 MPGe (combined), up from 98 MPGe (MPGe is the
energy equivalent to a gallon of gas)
• MORE CONFIDENCE: New propulsion system features more balanced operation regardless
of whether Volt is in electric or extended-range mode
• MORE VALUE: Gas engine uses regular unleaded — no longer requires premium
• MORE SPACE: Greater rear leg room and knee room with capability to carry up to
5 passengers (previously 4)
• MORE FEATURES: Regen on Demand steering wheel paddle, Location-Based Charging,
10 air bags4 and available active safety technology
• LESS NOISE: Customers wanted less of one thing — noise. System improvements led to
quieter steady-state engine operation, contributing to a noticeable reduction in cabin noise
1 Visit onstar.com for coverage map, details and system limitations. OnStar acts as a link to existing emergency service providers. 2 Late model year availability for Android Auto. Vehicle user interfaces are products of Apple and Google and their terms and privacy statements
apply. Requires compatible smartphone and data plan rates apply. 3 Based on EPA-estimated 42 MPG combined (gas) and 106 MPGe (electric). Actual range varies with conditions. 4 Always use safety belts and child restraints. Children are safer when properly secured in a
rear seat in the appropriate child restraint. See the Owner’s Manual for more information.

PRODUCT — BATTERY
• The 2017 Volt battery will hold more energy and
deliver 20 percent more energy by volume than
the first-generation car
• Battery capacity increased with a higher volume pack
(154 liters) than first-gen Volt
• Power density also improved from first-gen battery,
releasing more kilowatt hours for every liter
• This lithium-ion battery is lighter and has fewer cells
inside the pack (from 288 in first-gen to 192 cells in
today’s Volt)
• With improved chemistry and packaging, the secondgeneration Volt generates more usable energy (18.4
kilowatt hours) to enable an increase in range
18.4
• 5 percent reduction in mass, or about 20 lbs., compared
to the first-gen Volt
• Regen on Demand™ returns energy to the battery when
the driver pulls the paddle on the steering wheel. The
vehicle’s kinetic energy is captured and sent back to
the battery, while slowing down the vehicle. Drivers
need to apply the brakes to complete the stop.
KILOWATT HOURS
NORTH AMERICAN MADE
• About 70 percent of components in the Volt are
made in the United States and Canada in the first
year of production
VOLT BENEFIT: Lithium-ion batteries provide excellent power output, more consistent
performance over time and excellent ability to hold their charge versus nickel-metal
hydride (NiHM) batteries. NiMH batteries are also used in the plug-in market

RESOURCES — KEY TERMS
Blended electric motors — The Voltec Propulsion System in 2016 and 2017 models
uses two electric motors that often work simultaneously, or blend, to produce power.
Using a microprocessor to instantly calculate the most efficient way to deliver power,
the blended motors are one technique engineers used to extend the electric
mileage range.
Drive modes — Every Volt has four drive modes: Normal, Mountain, Sport and Hold.
Owners will drive in Normal for most situations. Mountain reserves battery energy
for very steep uphill roads. Sport gives the accelerator pedal quicker response. Hold
allows owners to run in extended-range mode during highway driving and hold their
battery charge for city driving where it’s more efficient.
Location-Based Charging — The 2017 Volt establishes a “home” charging station by
using its GPS locator. The advantages to this system are owners can program their
home charging schedules once, usually based on the lowest off-peak electricity rates
(depending on their location), and their Volt will know when it’s home and those charge
settings apply. When Volt is away from home, it reverts to “charge immediately” mode
so that owners can plug in at a public station to refresh the battery.
MPGe — Miles per gallon equivalent. Because we can’t measure fuel economy when
Volt operates in pure electric mode, we estimate an equivalent efficiency rating that
equates to driving on a gallon of gas.
Electric vehicle (EV) range — The estimated average distance in miles an owner can
drive in pure electric miles on a single full battery charge.
Range extender — We may use this term to refer to the 1.5L 4-cylinder gas engine in
the Volt because the benefit is in the name: It allows Volt drivers to keep going — and
extend their mileage range — after the battery charge is depleted.
Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) — An EREV has a battery and electric drive
unit to move the vehicle, but it also has a backup gas engine to seamlessly activate
when the battery runs out of charge. The gas engine primarily powers a generator
to create the power needed for the electric drive system to keep operating. An EREV
allows owners to use their Volt as an everyday vehicle and not worry about when the
electric charge runs out.
Regenerative brakes — When the car decelerates, Volt captures the kinetic energy
that normally would be dissipated as waste heat. The system sends that captured
energy back to the battery. The regenerative process has the added benefit of
slowing the car down, which helps preserve brake life. Volt’s brakes are blended,
meaning the regenerative process happens first, and then the conventional friction
brakes are blended in to complete the stop.
Kilowatt hours (kWh) — A unit of energy equivalent to one kilowatt expended over
an hour. Volt’s battery has an 18.4-kWh capacity, meaning the battery has enough
stored energy equivalent to provide 18.4 kW over one hour (an improvement over the
first-gen Volt battery capacity of 17.1 kWh).
Regen on Demand™ — Returns energy to the battery when the driver pulls the paddle
on the steering wheel. The vehicle’s kinetic energy is captured and sent back to the
battery, while slowing down the vehicle. Regen on Demand allows drivers to conduct
“one-pedal-driving,” meaning in certain kinds of traffic, they can slow the vehicle
with the manual paddle and not tap the brake pedal.

THE NEXT-GEN VOLT CUSTOMER
2016 CHEVROLET VOLT
In 2009, “early adopters” comprised the majority of the
electric vehicle market. Five years later, customers are
more astute about the benefits of electric vehicles, and the
segment has a much broader owner base with many more
competitive vehicles.
The all-new 2016 Volt represents a merger of
technological innovation, novel design and a crucial
catalyst: the perspectives of current Volt owners who
have driven more than 700 million all-electric miles
and counting.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT VOLT BUYERS
Engineers and designers applied real-world knowledge
and direct customer feedback to refine the nextgeneration Volt from front to rear — developing a sportier,
more intuitive, fun-to-drive, exceptionally efficient and
totally unique Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV).
·
They shop the vehicle, not the brand — they’re coming
from a variety of segments and brands and just care more
about getting the right vehicle
·
They’re adding to their HH fleet — in fact, many owners
have a second Volt in the garage
·
56 percent are conquest sales, including many firsttimers to Chevrolet and GM, according to sales data
·
·
They’re young, affluent and passionate about technology
They research heavily online — trusted sources matter, but
word of mouth and online videos/blogs/forums are critical
Available in base and uplevel trims, the sporty yet
efficient 2016 Volt reflects a legacy of technological
achievement. Production is scheduled to begin the 3rd
quarter of 2015 for distribution on a key-market basis.
