This symbol for CLASS II (Double Insulation) indicates that the equipment has been designed with double insulation surrounding live parts. This product utilises a Class 1 laser to read discs. This DVD Player is equipped with safety switches to avoid exposure when the disc door is open and the safety interlocks are defeated. Invisible laser radiation is present when the DVD Player’s lid is open and the system’s interlock has failed or been defeated. It is very important that you avoid direct exposure to the laser beam at all times. Please do not attempt to defeat or bypass the safety switches. WARNING: T o reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this equipment to rain or moisture. WARNING: To prevent contact with high voltage components inside, do not attempt to open the equipment. WARNING: D o not repair the unit yourself. Only have it serviced by qualified personnel. Please read and observe all warnings and instructions in this manual and those marked on the unit. Retain this booklet for future reference. Location • Place the unit away from any heat sources, radiators or other products (including amplifiers) that produce heat. • Position the cord so no one is likely to walk on it, pinch it or place items on or against it. • Do not position the unit in an enclosed car, in places with high temperatures (40°C or higher) or high humidity (90% or higher), or exposed to direct sunlight. • Do not use the equipment in excessively dirty places. • Do not expose the unit to water or any other liquid to avoid contact with dangerous voltage points and parts that could result in short-circuit. Usage Conditions • This unit is designed and manufactured to assure personal safety. Improper use can result in electrical shock or other damage. • To avoid exposure to dangerous high voltage, do not remove the cabinet cover. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel only. • Openings on the cabinet are provided for ventilation and to protect the unit from overheating. To ensure proper operation, do not cover them. • Do not place heavy objects on top of the appliance or step on it. • Do not place foreign objects on the disc tray. • Keep your fingers off the disc tray as it closes to avoid injury or damage. • The top and rear panels of the unit may become warm after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction. • Not using the appliance for a long period of time may cause malfunction or poor performance. We recommend you turn on and use the unit occasionally. • Do not open or close the disc tray by force. Be sure the polarities are correct. There should be no large obstacles between the remote control and main unit. Important Notes • Some features of the player can only be performed by the remote control. • Some features described in this manual are related to the disc’s encoding. • Some features may not be available, if the disc encoding does not support the feature. • Some features contained in this DVD player are related to the DVD disc’s software. • Some features cannot be performed if the disc does not support the feature or requires special settings. • To check the features of a particular disc, check its cover or follow the disc’s onscreen menu instructions. 8 Instructions Starting up • • • • Connect the DVD Player to your TV (or amplifier, if desired) as illustrated on page 5. Switch on your TV set and select AV mode. Plug the DVD Player into an appropriate power point and switch on power to the outlet. Press the POWER button on the front of the unit or press the POWER button on the remote control of your DVD Player. All functions can be accessed/operated with the remote control buttons, some can also be accessed from the front panel of the DVD Player. The function of the remote control buttons is the same as the corresponding buttons on the front panel of the DVD Player. See the following pages for detailed information about these functions. 9 Instructions (Cont.) Playing a disc Once it has read the disc, the machine will start playing automatically. • If the disc is in DVD format, the machine will show the DVD menu or title menu. • If the disc is in VCD 2.0 format, the machine will active PBC playback control status. • If the disc is in CD format, the machine will start playing the CD in sequence. NOTE: I f the picture does not cover the entire screen or there is no colour display, press the N/P button and change the play mode (from NTSC to PAL). Basic playback controls • • • • • • • Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to play or pause the video/music. Press the PREV button to skip backward to the previous track/title/chapter. Press the NEXT button to skip forward to the next track/title/chapter. Press the REV button to fast reverse the disc 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x or back to normal playback speed. Press the FWD button to fast forward the disc 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x or back to normal playback speed. Press the STOP button ONCE to stop the disc playing; press the PLAY/PAUSE button to resume playback from the last played location. Press the STOP button TWICE to stop playback completely. Description of functions On-screen display (OSD) • In DVD disc playback mode: press the OSD button on the remote control to display elapsed time, chapter number, language, mode, subtitle mode, chapter time, title time. In VCD disc playback mode: press the OSD button on the remote control to display single elapsed time, single remaining time, display off and other information about the disc. 10 Instructions (Cont.) Play mode (N/P) Press the N/P button repeatedly to toggle between NTSC, PAL and AUTO play mode. Number buttons Press the relevant number buttons for playing favourite tracks/chapters according to their numbers in the menu. Subtitles Press the SUBTITLE button to display or change the subtitles when watching movies/recordings on multi-subtitle encoded discs. You can choose from the preinstalled subtitles on your DVD disc. (This function only works with multi-subtitle encoded discs.) For example, to select language 1 (English) from 8 options, press the SUBTITLE button and select “English”. If you do not want subtitles displayed, select “Subtitle off”. Angle Press the ANGLE button repeatedly to view the same image from different angles when watching athletic matches, concerts or theatrical programs on multi-angle encoded discs. (This function only works with multi-angle encoded discs.) Title Press the TITLE button to display the title menu when watching movies/recordings on multi-title encoded discs. (This function works only with multi-title encoded discs.) 11 Instructions (Cont.) Menu The MENU button will return you to the main DVD playback menu. (This function works only with multi-chapter encoded discs.) • When playing VCD 2.0 discs, press the RETURN button to return to the PBC playback menu. • When playing SVCD discs, press the MENU button to display the menu on screen. After loading the disc, the unit will enter PBC ON play mode automatically. • When playing VCD 1.1, CD-DA and MP3 format discs, press the MENU button and the PBC OFF notice will appear on the screen. In this mode, the menu will not display the screen; press the digit button to select the track directly. Number buttons Press the relevant number buttons to select picture or track directly. Direction buttons When playing discs, use the / / / UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT buttons to select your options in the disk title, disk menu or your device setup menu. Repeat • When playing DVD discs, press the REPEAT button and select from the following options: repeat title, repeat chapter, repeat all, off. • When playing VCD discs, press the REPEAT button and select from the following options: repeat track, repeat disc, repeat off. • When playing audio CDs, choose the particular song you want to be repeated, then press the REPEAT button and choose from the following options: repeat track, repeat disc, cancel off. 12 Instructions (Cont.) Repeat from A-B Press the A-B button ONCE to set the initial starting point (A) for repeat playback; press it a second time to set the end point (B). The unit will now repeat playback from your set points (A) to (B). Pressing the A-B button a third time will cancel the repeat playback setting. Zoom If you want to watch a particular action or still picture in close-up (up to 4 times maximum), press the ZOOM button repeatedly, up to 6 times, and choose the zoom level from the following options: 2x, 3x, 4x, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4. Press the button once more to return the screen to normal playback mode. Once you are in 2x, 3x or 4x zoom mode, you can move the focus on screen using the / / / buttons on the remote control. R/L When playing discs in SVCD, VCD or CD format, press the L/R button to select one of the following options: stereo, L-mono, R-mono, Mix-mono. Volume and Mute • Press the VOL+ button to increase the volume and the VOL- button to decrease the volume down to no volume output. • Press the MUTE button to switch the sound off; press it again to switch the sound back on. Program (PROG) In disc playback mode: press the PROG button to enter program status, then enter the track numbers desired, for example, 2, 4, 6 and 8. (If you enter a wrong number, you can press CLEAR to remove the numbers.) Use the arrow buttons to move the cursor to the Play icon button, then press PLAY/PAUSE to start playing. To exit programmed play, simply press PROG, clear selected items from right box and press PLAY/PAUSE button. To repeat the program press REPEAT button for track/chapter repeat, all tracks/chapters repeat or cancel the repeat function. Slow Press the SLOW button repeatedly to choose your level of slow motion from the following options: 1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x, 1/16x or 1/32x slower forward speed and back to normal speed. 13 Instructions (Cont.) Clear When using the programming or Go To function, press the CLEAR button to clear the input number. GOTO The GOTO button allows you to select title, chapters as well as time points when playing a DVD. • To select a title, press the GOTO button once, the GOTO menu setting will appear on your screen. Use the number buttons to enter the prefered title and press ENTER button to confirm. • To select a chapter, use the RIGHT arrow button to select chapter. Use the number buttons to enter the desired chapter number, then press ENTER button to confirm. To select any chapter higher than 2 digits, press the 10+ button to select the chapter number required. • To select a time point in your movie, press the RIGHT arrow button twice to select the time point, and use the number buttons to enter desired time to start playing, such as hour, minute and second. Then press ENTER button to confirm. Step Press this button in DVD playback mode to advance the movie frame by frame, without sound. Press the PLAY button to return to normal playback mode for sound and images. Setup options Setup options for your Language Setup, Display Setup, Audio Setup, Speaker Setup and Parental Setup can be accessed from the main setup menu. Available options for each are listed on the following pages. The general procedure for selecting setup options is as follows: • Press the SETUP button on the remote control to display the main menu. • Use the / UP/DOWN arrow buttons to move up or down in the menu and select an item. Then press the ENTER button to confirm your selection and enter the submenu. 14 Instructions (Cont.) • • • Use the / LEFT/RIGHT arrow buttons to move the pointer and the / UP/DOWN arrow buttons to select the desired option, then press the ENTER button to confirm your selection. Press the LEFT arrow button to return to the last menu. The setup options for this function are now set. To end the setup, press the SETUP button again. Language setup Under this menu you can select options for OSD Language, Subtitle, Audio, Menu and Version. OSD Language Select available on screen display language: English, French, German and Spanish . Subtitle Select available subtitle language: English, French, German, Thai, Spanish and Off. 15 Instructions (Cont.) Audio Select available audio language: English, French and German. Menu Select available menu language: English, French, German, Spanish and Off. Version The default version is view version. 16 Instructions (Cont.) Display setup Under this menu you can select options for Aspect Ratio, TV Type, Video Out, Angle Mark, Caption, Screen Saver and Last Memory. Aspect Ratio Select available aspect ratio: 16:9, 4:3 LB, 4:3 PS. NOTE: • Irrespective of what screen format you have selected, if your screen displays in 4:3 format, the picture will be shown in that format anyway. • For DVDs, the screen format is convertible. • If your screen display in 4:3 format, when a DVD with 16:9 display format is played back, the picture will be flattened. TV Screen/ Film Format 4:3 16:9 4/3 Normal Full View 16:9 Mailbox Wide Screen 17 Instructions (Cont.) TV Type Select available TV type: Auto, NTSC and PAL. Video Out The default video output setting is CVBS. Angle Mark Turn Angle Mark On or Off. 18 Instructions (Cont.) Caption Turn caption On or Off. Screen Saver Turn screen saver On or Off. Turning screen saver on can protect the screen if you pause your play for a long period of time. Last Memory Turn last memory On or Off. Turning last memory on, the DVD player will resume play from where you left off. 19 Instructions (Cont.) Audio Setup Under this menu you can select options for Channel Output, Dual Mono, LPCM Output and Dynamic. Channel Output Select available channel output option: LT/RT or Stereo. Dual Mono Select available dual mono option: Stereo, L-mono, R-mono and Mix-mono. 20 Instructions (Cont.) LPCM Output Select available LPCM output option: 48KHZ or 96KHZ. Dynamic Adjust preferred dynamic level by pressing the Speaker Setup / UP/DOWN arrow buttons. Select the sound equalizer effect from Off, 3D, Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classic. 21 Instructions (Cont.) Parental Setup Under this menu you can select options for Change (password), Rating Level and Default Reset. Change (password) You will need to enter the default password if you are using parental setup for the first time. The default password is 0000. Once you have entered the correct password, you can change the password by entering a new 4 digit password. And enter it again to save the new password. 22 Instructions (Cont.) Rating Level Use the / LEFT/RIGHT arrow buttons to set your desired DVD disc rating level. This option helps to set an appropriate rating to restrict viewing for children. The options available correspond to the film ratings on the disc. 23 Instructions (Cont.) There are 9 rating level: Off, Kid Safe, G, PG, PG-13, PG-R, R, NC-17, Adult. Off No retractions on all DVD discs. Kid Safe Safe for young children. G General Audiences PG Parental Guidance PG-13 Parental Guidance for children under age of 13 PG-R Parental Guidance Restricted R Restricted NC-17 No Children under age of 17 Adult For adult age over 18 Default Reset Reset settings to factory default. NOTE: Reset will erase all your previous settings. 24 Instructions (Cont.) USB Playback This DVD Player supports the following USB playback multimedia formats: AVI, XVID, MEPG4, DIVX, MP3 and JPEG. Insert your USB device firmly into the USB port at the right side of the panel. (a) If there is no disc in the disc tray, the player will automatically play the multimedia files from the USB device. (b) If the player is in disc playing mode, press the DVD/USB button to switch to USB mode. A message will appear on the screen and prompt you to select “Disc” or “USB” mode. Use the / UP/ DOWN arrow buttons to make your selection, then press ENTER to confirm. • When the player enters USB multimedia file playback mode, the play menu interface will be displayed on the screen. Press the arrow buttons to move the highlight to your selection, then press ENTER to confirm. • If the USB device contains MP3 as well as other multimedia files, the DVD Player will give priority to MP3 files. • For details about multimedia file playback, see the information on the previous page. NOTE: • When reading large MPEG files, the DVD Player may pause temporarily. • Using a USB device that is unsupported by this DVD Player may cause problems with normal playback. In such a case, switch off the power, take out the USB device and then reconnect the device and restart it. • This unit supports USB FAT, FAT32 single partition drives only. Other USB devices may not work. Always check the format before buying a USB device. 25 Instructions (Cont.) Audio CD Ripping In CD playback mode, press the COPY/DEL button on the remote control to display the CD ripping interface. Use the / / / UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT arrow buttons to move around on the screen and select the options. Then press the ENTER button to enter the option/submenu or confirm your choice. • In the menu you can select a different speed for disc ripping. • Select Yes to confirm and start your disc ripping. • Before the unit start to rip your disc, it will ask if you want to rename the files. You can select Select No to continue. • If you select Yes, you will be directed to another screen to enter new file names by using the / / / buttons on your remote control, and press enter to confirm each selection. 26 Instructions (Cont.) • • Do not unplug your USB drive while ripping disc. Disc ripping will be unsuccessful and files maybe damaged if you unplug USB drive while ripping. The ripping progress screen will automatically close once ripping has successfully completed. NOTE: • The audio disc must be in good condition, have no scratches or marks and should play smoothly. • The destination USB device must be compatible with the DVD Player and have enough space. 27 Care and Maintenance When Not in Use • Unplug the unit from the power outlet after use to avoid possible damage during electrical storms, or when the equipment will be unattended or unused for a long period of time. When the unit is not in use, be sure to remove the disc and turn it off. Maintenance • Unplug the unit from the power outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners on the unit. • This unit is transistorised and does not contain any parts you can repair yourself. Do not open it or attempt to repair it. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. • If the unit has been damaged, have it serviced or repaired by qualified personnel. • Upon completion of service or repair of the unit, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to ensure the unit is in proper operating condition. Condensation The unit may suffer from condensation in the following situations: • When you take the unit directly from a cold to a warm place, and vice versa. • When you use the unit in a room where you just turned on a heater, or where cold air from an air conditioner is directed on to the unit. • When you use the unit in hot and humid surrounds just after having moved it from an air conditioned room. • When the room is steamy or damp. • If condensation exists, the unit will not operate properly. Remove the disc, plug the power cord into the wall socket, turn on the unit and leave it for two to three hours. After that time, the unit will have warmed up and any moisture will have evaporated. Keeping the unit connected to the wall socket will keep moisture condensation problems to a minimum. 28 Care and Maintenance (Cont.) Disturbances When you place the unit near a TV, radio or VCR, the playback picture quality may deteriorate and the sound may be distorted. To avoid these problems, place the unit away from these appliances. Disc Protection • Do not touch the playback side of the disc. • Do not attach tape or paper to the disc. To clean off dust, slightly moisten a soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth. • Do not use any type of solvent, commercially available benzene or antistatic spray for vinyl LPs, as these may damage the discs. Storing Discs • Do not store discs in a place subject to or near heat sources. • Do not store discs in a place subject to moisture and dust, such as a bathroom or near a humidifier. • Store discs vertically in a case. Stacking discs or placing objects on discs outside their case may cause warping. 29 FAQs If you encounter any problems with your DVD Player, check the suggestions below to try and solve them. If none of the advice below helps with the problem, contact our after sales support line for advice. Under no circumstances try and open the unit yourself. It must only be checked and repaired by qualified personnel. There is no sound. • Ensure the DVD player is firmly connected to your TV or any other devices (e.g. amplifier). • Make sure the volume on your TV and the DVD player is set to an appropriate level and the sound is not muted. There is no picture. • Ensure your DVD player is firmly connected to your TV or any other devices (e.g. amplifier). • Ensure your TV is working properly. • Make sure the DVD Player is in the correct mode. Press the N/P button repeatedly until the correct video output setting is selected. • Ensure the disc is correctly loaded (with the label side facing upwards). • Make sure that the disc you are playing is undamaged and clean. The remote control does not work. • Make sure there are no obstacles between the player and the remote control. • Point the remote control to the remote control sensor on the player. • The batteries in the remote control unit may need replacing. There are problems with the picture. • Make sure the disc is clean and unscratched. • As the player is controlled by a microcomputer, when encountering a problem switch off the power first and then switch it back on again in a few seconds. This may solve your problem. The unit does not respond to any operation. • Strong signal or noise interference may have activated safe mode.
