Function
Air Dryers are used in compressed air brake systems to
remove water and contamination from the air supplied
by the air compressor. Water can be in liquid and/
or vapour form depending on the degree of cooling
which takes place between the compressor and the
air dryer. Contamination is normally engine lubricating
oil which has been ‘carried over’ from the compressor.
It is important to remove this oil before the air gets
to the desiccant in the air dryer cartridge otherwise it
will contaminate the desiccant and reduce the drying
performance of the air dryer.
Water in the compressed air is adsorbed by the
desiccant contained in the air dryer cartridge. This water
is then removed from the desiccant and expelled to
atmosphere by a ‘purge (regeneration) cycle’ when the
system reaches ‘cut-out’ pressure and the compressor goes ‘off-load’.
The air which performs the regeneration of the desiccant is clean dry air:
• either supplied by a purge reservoir (LA82.. Air Dryers - for more
information see PD-054-200, Document No. Y209855)
• or taken from the service brake reservoirs of the vehicle at the
end of each charging cycle (LA80.. Air Dryers described in this
document)

LA80.. Air Dryers perform the regeneration of the desiccant by
taking air back from the service brake reservoirs (through the

multi-circuit protection valve) for a preset time. This time is controlled by
a pneumatic ‘time switch’ integrated in the air dryer and the time of the
regeneration cycle is preset having been determined by the volume of

the brake and auxiliary circuits of the vehicle.
LA80.. Air Dryers have an integrated unloader valve to control the brake
system pressure by discharging air from the compressor to atmosphere

when the system ‘cut-out’ pressure is reached and then allowing the

system to be recharged once the system pressure falls to the ‘cut-in’
pressure. The difference between the ‘cut-out’ and ‘cut-in’ pressures is
called the ‘switching range’. In addition the unloader signals the ‘time switch’ at the ‘cut-out’ pressure to allow air
to flow back through the desiccant cartridge for the regeneration cycle. Some LA80.. Air Dryers have the facility
to signal the energy saving system in the air compressor at cut-out. The unloader valve is available in a range of
pressure settings to suit all vehicles. The air dryer also incorporates a system safety valve.
Each LA80.. Air Dryer is designed to match specific vehicle parameters involving both system pressures and
volumes.
LA80.. Air Dryers are available with an integrated, thermostatically controlled, 12 or 24 V heater to prevent the air
dryer freezing up in cold weather.
There are two types of desiccant cartridge available for the LA80.. Air Dryers, firstly the standard cartridge which will
perform satisfactorily in most conditions and secondly the oil separator cartridge (OSC) which has an advanced oil
separation feature ahead of the desiccant to prevent contamination and provide enhanced cartridge life, particularly
on vehicles with high compressor duty cycles or prone to high oil carry over.
Some LA80.. Air Dryers have an integral silencer and some have an exhaust silencer fitted.

Air Dryers
Installation
The LA80.. Air Dryer should be mounted on the chassis or on a suitable bracket using the three mounting studs or
threaded holes (dependent on variant). It is normal to mount the air dryer with the exhaust pointing downwards but
it can be rotated by up to 90 degrees in any direction providing that it is protected from water splash. If not, the limit
is 30 degrees from vertical with the time switch cover pointing upwards.
The connection from the air compressor must be of adequate size for the output of the compressor and should be
of sufficient length and heat dissipation to achieve a inlet temperature at the air dryer of less than 65 °C. The pipe
from the compressor should slope downwards to the air dryer so that any water which condenses in the pipe will run
down to the air dryer and be expelled to atmosphere.
A clearance of at least 20 mm must be allowed above the air dryer to permit removal of the cartridge.
It is strongly recommended that all new air dryer installations are inspected and approved by a Knorr-Bremse engineer.
Note - ensure that the exhaust and silencer are masked during any painting of the vehicle.
Servicing
Air Dryers should be checked regularly to ensure that the cut-out and cut-in pressures conform to the vehicle
specification. If not, the unloader valve should be serviced using the correct service kit.
The drop in pressure in the service reservoirs after cut-out should be checked to ensure correct operation of the time
switch. If this is incorrect the time switch should be serviced using the correct service kit.
The reservoirs in the brake system should be checked regularly to ensure that there is no water present in them. If
there is, the desiccant cartridge should be changed. If a standard cartridge is fitted to the air dryer and it requires
changing frequently this may be caused by contamination of the desiccant due to oil carry over from the compressor.
If this is the case an OSC cartridge should be fitted and the air compressor should be serviced or replaced.
