Product guide | HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521 series
Quickly create, capture, and
deliver documents
Maintain peak performance with fast print speeds. Scan both sides of a page in one pass, and easily turn
paper documents into digital files. Help save paper with two-sided printing, and use the 50-sheet automatic
document feeder to heighten productivity. Plus, this smart MFP can multi-task—you can receive a fax while
the device is busy printing.
Boost productivity with quick print speeds
Need documents fast? With 256 MB of memory and an 800 MHz processor, this MFP delivers black and
white prints at speeds up to 40 ppm (A4)3 and first page out speeds as fast as 8 seconds from ready for
printing or 9 seconds for copying (letter). 15
Keep moving with expandable, versatile paper handling
Help meet the needs of your high volume imaging and printing environment and handle large jobs
efficiently.
·
This MFP has a standard paper capacity up to 600 sheets, expandable with one optional 500-sheet
paper and heavy media tray to reach a capacity up to 1,100 sheets. With the option to load paper in
volume or use each tray for a different paper type, you won’t need to reload paper as frequently.
·
The multipurpose tray supports heavy custom media up to 199 g/m2. This includes HP Cover Paper,
offering the utmost in versatility. All trays are adjustable to provide exceptional flexibility.
·
Expand your media options with support for a wide variety of media types, including envelopes, labels,
transparencies, and card stock. Print on a broad range of media sizes, including A4, letter, legal,
executive, and more.
·
Automatic two-sided printing helps reduce the cost of wasted paper and virtually doubles the MFPs’
input capacity.
·
An optional rolling printer cabinet is available for free standing installations. This sturdy cabinet lets you
place the MFP right where you need it, while adding storage for extra paper and supplies.
Unattended, uninterrupted copying and scanning
You can copy, scan, or fax up to 50 legal-sized originals from the automatic document feeder (ADF)—
there’s no need for you to handle every page. Scan or copy two-sided pages fast, in just one pass, with the
ADF’s dual-head scanner. The 216 x 297 mm flatbed scanner lets you easily copy and scan odd sizes,
delicate documents, and bound material.
Easily create copies
The device may be used as a standalone, walk-up copier—you do not need to be connected to the network
or a computer to make copies. You can adjust all copy settings at the control panel, including contrast and
lightness/darkness of reproduction, reduction or enlargement from 25 to 400 percent, and copy
optimization, which automatically detects the document type and adjusts settings for the best results.
There’s even a setting for easily copying two-sided ID cards. Choose ID Copy from the control panel to
capture both sides of a double-sided identification card and print them on one side of a single page for
reporting and filing.

Scan documents directly to network folders or email
Streamline your workflow with direct digital sending. It’s quick and easy to capture paper documents and
send them directly to email, network folders, or to the cloud. Set-up wizards help you configure your MFP’s
digital sending features. These scan features help you:
·
Save time and resources—without these features, you’d need to scan a document to your PC, then
send it as an attachment via email from your computer or move it to a network folder. And since there’s
nothing to print, these features cut down on paper and toner usage.
·
Save space and help increase security—no need to keep hard copies of sensitive documents. You
don’t have to worry about lost paper or using up valuable space in a filing cabinet.
·
Get instant access—have an instant digital copy of what you scan, from invoices to checks, estimates
to contracts. Provide immediate access to scanned documents for others on your network, if you
choose.
Scan using other software
This MFP works with Windows®-based programs that support TWAIN-compliant or WIA-compliant scanning
devices and with Macintosh-based programs that support ICA-compliant scanning devices. Using one of
these software programs, you can gain access to the scanning feature and scan an image directly into the
open program.
Enjoy peace of mind with legendary HP reliability
With a monthly duty cycle of up to 75,000 pages,7 the MFP is built to keep intervention rates low so you can
stay productive.
Prior to its introduction, a new HP LaserJet device undergoes rigorous HP testing to provide consistent,
high-quality output. Tests are performed with a large sample of devices through each step of the design
process, to be certain that the device measures up to HP standards. The result is a solid, reliable product
that produces consistent, excellent output quality over the life of the device and its supplies.
The MFP comes with a standard one-year, limited warranty (onsite). Additional warranty and service
extension options are available.
Relax with support services from HP
What if you could rest assured that your entire imaging and printing network was producing high quality
results—reliably, consistently, and without interruption? What if you could do this without breaking your
budget? And what if you could count on one of the most trusted names in information technology for
ongoing support? Now you can.
HP Care Pack services are designed with all of these needs in mind. HP Care Pack services provide an easy to
buy, easy to use portfolio of packaged services that expand and enhance the warranty coverage on your
device—at a price you can afford. In some cases, the cost of a 3 year Next Day Onsite Care Pack service can
be less than the cost of a single out of warranty repair. We deliver proven expertise to provide you with
everything from supplemental service to a virtual IT staff. For more details on service and maintenance
offerings, see “Ordering information” on page 16.

Increase efficiency with an
easy-to-manage MFP
Work smarter with this colour touchscreen control panel
The bright 8.89 cm colour graphic touchscreen will transform the way you use your multifunction device.
You can complete many common tasks without ever touching your computer.
Save time with business apps
The MFP gives you quick access to handy apps right from the touchscreen control panel. These are special
applications available exclusively to HP web-enabled printing devices. Business apps connect your device to
the Internet in an altogether new and seamless way.2 Choose from a growing library of apps that make
printing faster, simpler, and more useful than ever. Access your documents and print them in one touch
from the touchscreen colour display.
Select apps to:
·
Keep commonly used business forms—
invoices, contracts, receipts, and more—at
your fingertips. Print them when you need
them without a computer.
·
Quickly access and print web content.
·
Store documents and images on the web. Use
convenient apps to easily scan spreadsheets,
newspapers, images, and more to your
GoogleTM Drive or Box.net account to be
viewed, shared, or printed anytime, all without
logging on to your computer.
Walk up and print using the easy-access USB port
The control panel includes an easy-access USB port to print files directly from your thumb drive. Access
saved documents or photos and print them quickly. You can also scan files directly to the USB drive without
a computer.
Deliver reliable, consistently outstanding results
HP LaserJet all-in-one toner cartridges are a crucial component of the printing system. The toner cartridge,
toner, and imaging drum are integrated into one supply, which means that you refresh the imaging system
every time you insert a new cartridge.
When it’s time to replace the cartridge, choose the optional high-capacity Original HP LaserJet black toner
cartridge. With a high-capacity cartridge, you can print more pages for less and replace supplies less often.9
HP Smart Printing technology is activated every time you install an Original HP toner cartridge. The
HP cartridge, MFP, and software are designed to work together to enable easy, high-quality laser printing,
and allow you to monitor your current supplies, order new supplies online, and print successfully.
The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521 series features a front door that offers a single point of access to replace
HP printing supplies and clear paper jams. Clearly labelled parts, easy-to-understand instructions, and
cartridge status information from the control panel or HP device management tools make supplies
management and troubleshooting easy for all users.

Manage devices remotely
Proactively manage your MFP and help save valuable time with convenient device management tools.
HP Device Toolbox for Windows and HP Utility for Mac OS X provide easy access to the product’s
HP Embedded Web Server. Here you can view device and network status and adjust settings from your
computer, instead of from the MFP control panel.
The MFP is also supported by HP’s fleet management tool, HP Web Jetadmin, for remote monitoring. The
HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) provides a versatile single-driver solution for nearly every HP device in your
managed printing environment—including the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521 series. The UPD now supports
end-to-end encrypted printing, so you can help keep sensitive information private. For more information, or
to download these free tools, visit hp.com/go/wja or hp.com/go/upd.
Fleet-level protection
Use optional HP Imaging and Printing Security Center (HP IPSC), the policy-based solution that helps you
increase security, strengthen compliance, and reduce risk across your imaging and printing fleet. 16
·
Stream line the process to securely deploy and monitor devices by applying a single security policy
across the fleet.
·
Easily achieve baseline security with the HP Best Practices Base Policy—no security expertise required.
·
Actively maintain and verify compliance with your defined security policies by using HP IPSC automated
monitoring and risk-based reporting.

Stay connected
Share the MFP easily
Designed to be easy to share with a small workteam, the MFP offers embedded wired networking
capabilities that allow you to connect directly to a Gigabit Ethernet 100/1000Base-TX network. The M521dw
model also includes 802.11b/g/n networking, so you can connect the MFP directly to a wireless (Wi-Fi)
network.5 Wireless networking allows work teams with a wireless router and a notebook or desktop
computer with a wireless card or adapter to print via Wi-Fi—there’s no need for a cable between the
computer and the MFP. The benefits that are unique to built-in wireless networking include:
·
Increased mobility—Place the MFP anywhere in your wireless network environment.
·
Reduced cable clutter—Keep your office environment tidy and organized with fewer cables.
·
Simpler relocation—Fewer cables make it easier to move equipment from one location to another.
There’s no need to install expensive LAN cabling.
Print from virtually anywhere
With HP ePrint mobile printing, there’s no need to wait to print on the go.12 Simply send the prints you want
to your MFP using a smartphone, notebook, or other mobile device. 17 Larger documents, presentations, and
PDF files can be difficult to read on small, handheld device screens, but now you can easily print these
documents from your mobile device to read or take with you.
This MFP is also Google Cloud Print ready, with no need for print drivers or additional software. Simply
register with your HP ePrint email address on Google’s HP registration page
(google.com/cloudprint/learn/setup-hp.html).
Print from a variety of mobile devices on the go:
10
·
Download the HP ePrint app from your provider and you’re ready to print. Use your mobile device to
locate the web-connected printer or MFP closest to you. Then simply print your documents and pick
them up.
·
Attach your document to an email message. Forward that message to a web-connected printer or MFP
from your email-capable device and collect your printed document.
·
Use Apple® AirPrintTM to easily print wirelessly from your iPad®, iPhone® or iPod touch®. 18

Help improve your energy costs
and save resources
It has never been more important to save energy and resources. HP technologies can help. HP’s largest
impact on the environment is through its products. The environmental performance of products is largely
determined at the design stage. HP’s Design for the Environment initiative is driving improvements at every
stage in the product lifecycle—helping reduce the amount of energy, paper, packaging, and materials used
at HP and by our customers.
Conserve energy
With its intelligent design, this MFP can help you meet your environmental goals, without sacrificing
performance:
·
ENERGY STAR® certified product—HP printing and imaging equipment marked with the ENERGY
STAR® logo is qualified to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® specifications for
imaging equipment. Additional ENERGY STAR® information is listed at: hp.com/go/energystar.
·
HP Auto-On/Auto-Off Technology—Stay productive and conserve resources with intelligence that can
turn your MFP on when you need it and off when you don’t.14
·
Instant-on Technology and Instant-on Copy—HP LaserJet products with Instant-on Technology use
an innovative, quick-heating fuser system that warms rapidly and cools quickly. The MFP’s scanner
requires no warm-up time.14
·
HP EcoSMART Console—Accessed through the MFP’s embedded web server, HP EcoSMART Console
lets you easily control sleep and power down modes to create a customized energy experience that’s
just right for you and your business.
Reduce cartridge waste and save paper
Get up to 50% paper savings by using automatic two-sided printing. In managed print environments,
HP Web Jetadmin can help cut the cost of paper consumption by setting automatic two-sided printing as the
default for individual devices or entire fleets (for two-sided printing capable devices).10
Print web content responsibly with HP Smart Print
Finally, stop getting extra pages you don’t want when printing from the web. HP Smart Print, a free
download, works with Microsoft® Internet Explorer®, Mozilla Firefox®, and Google Chrome™ browsers to
help you organize web content before you print. By avoiding printing clipped pages or lines of useless text,
excess pages are typically reduced by as much as 25% when printing from the Internet. 19 To download, go
to hp.com/go/smartprint.
Reduce your impact—recycle HP cartridges
Toner cartridge recycling is easy and free with the HP Planet Partners program, available in more than 50
countries, territories, and regions around the world.1 All Original HP toner cartridges returned to HP through
Planet Partners are recycled to recover raw materials. HP never refills, resells, or sends HP print cartridges
to a landfill.
