This is a completely step by step guide for VMware SRM 5.0, will guide you go through the
deployment including vSphere 5.0 installation, Storage configuration, SRM installation, SRM
configuration and SRM recovery demo.
In this document will use FalconStor Network Storage Server Virtual Appliance (NSS VA) to
provide storage as the VMware SRM Datastore. FalconStor NSS VA is a VMware SRM
certified storage system; you can quickly deploy and configure your storage system for
VMware SRM with NSS VA.

Part 1: Install and Config VMware vSphere 5.
Section 1: Install vCenter Server 5. (On both sites)
Step 1: Insert VMware vSphere 5 DVD to start installation.
Auto run will pop up once DVD inserted.
Before you continue to install vCenter Server, your OS must be Windows x64, and must have
Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 and Windows Installer 4.5 installed.
Select vCenter Server from the list, and then click on Install button to launch the installation,
select your preferred language during the installation, and accept the SLA.

Step 2: Input your vCenter license key.
Step 3: Select Database for vCenter Server, will use SQL Server 2008 Express in this demo.
For other Database configuration, please refer to VMware support website.
Step 4: Select user account for vCenter services.

Step 5: Select the destination location to install.
Step 6: Configure Ports for vCenter Server.

Step 7: Select vCenter Server Web services JVM memory configuration, and then start to
install.
Installation wizard will start SQL Server 2008 Express installation first, and then start to install
vCenter Server.

Section 2: Install vSphere Client.
vCenter Server does not have GUI, you’d need to install vSphere Client to connect vCenter
Server, or you can use Web Browser to connect vCenter Web service. VSphere Client does not
need to install on same machine of vCenter Server, you can install it on other machines.
Step 1: Select vSphere Client from the list, and then click on Install button to start.
Before you continue to install vSphere Client, your OS must have Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 and
Microsoft VJ# 2.0 SE installed.
Select your preferred language during the installation, and accept the SLA.

Step 2: Select the folder in which to install vSphere Client, and then start to install vSphere
Client.

Section 3: Add ESX/ESXi servers to vCenter Server. (On both sites)
Step 1: Launch vSphere Client, input vCenter Server IP/Name and credential.
Step 2: Create Datacenter.
Datacenter is a logical group in VMware infrastructure; you need to assign ESX/ESXi servers to
Datacenter.
Right click on vCenter Server, and then select New Datacenter to create a Datacenter.

Step 3: Add ESX/ESXi servers to Datacenter.
Right click on Datacenter’s name, and select Add Host.
Input ESX/ESXi Hostname/IP and credential, and accept the Security Alert.

Step 4: Add ESX/ESXi host and assign license key.
You can assign license key during Add Host Wizard or add license key later in vSphere Client.

Step 5: Select a Datacenter as location, and then finish add a host.
Now ESX/ESXi servers added to vCenter.

Part 2: vSphere 5 iSCSI storage configuration.
Section 1: iSCSI storage networking. (On both sites)
Before you can connect to storage provided by iSCSI/NFS, you need to add VMkernel
networking to your ESX/ESXi hosts.
Step 1: Add VMkernel networking.
Select ESX/ESXi server that you want to connect to iSCSI storage, and then click on
Configuration tab, select Networking from the list, and then click Add Networking…
Select VMkernel because this network is use for iSCSI storage connection.

Step 2: Select uplink adapter(s).
It is better to use a separated NIC for iSCSI storage connection. In this case vmnic1 will be used
for iSCSI connection; vmnic0 is used for Virtual Machines and management console.
Input a network label.

Section 2: iSCSI Software Adapter. (On both sites)
vSphere 5.0 does not provide iSCSI Software Adapter by default, you must add it yourself.
Step 1: Add iSCSI Software Adapter.
Select Configuration tab on ESX/ESXi server, and then select Storage Adapters from the list,
click on Add…
Click OK to add iSCSI adapter.

Step 2: Add iSCSI target.
You need to connect to iSCSI Target via iSCSI Software Adapter, select iSCSI Software Adapter
from the list, vmhba33 is iSCSI Software Adapter in this case, and then click on Properties…
Click on Dynamic Discovery tab in iSCSI Initiator (vmhba33) Properties window, and then click
Add button to add iSCSI target.

Input your iSCSI storage server’s IP address and iSCSI listening port.
A rescan is need after iSCSI target is configured. But no storage will be found at this time,
because FalconStor NSS VA has not configured yet. This will discuss later.

Section 1: Deploy FalconStor NSS VA. (On both sites)
Step 1: Connect to vCenter Server or a ESX/ESXi Server via vSphere Client, select menu File,
and then Deploy OVF Template
Click Browse button to select FalconStor NSS Virtual Appliance template file, which name
FalconStor-NSSVA.ovf in this case.

Click Accept button to accept the SLA.
Input the Virtual Machine Display Name for NSS VA.

Select virtual disk schema for NSS VA, suggest select Thick Provision for better performance.
Select virtual networking mapping for NSS VA.

Step 2: Add virtual disk to NSS VA.
You need to add Virtual Disk to NSS VA as storage space before you configure NSS VA.
Right click select NSS VA virtual machine in vSphere Client, and then select Edit Setting, click
Add button to add devices.
Select Hard Disk in Add Hardware window.

Select Create a new virtual disk. You can use Raw Device Mappings if you want to assign RAW
LUN to NSS VA to get better performance.
Also use Thick Provision will get better performance.

Please note that add hard disk to Virtual Device Node 1:0, or use channels other than OS disks.
Repeat Step 2 to add one more Hard Disk to NSS VA to provide snapshot storage, please note
Virtual Device Node must changed, such as 1:1 for 2nd disk, 1:2 for 3rd disk etc.
In this case, added 2 Hard Disks to NSS VA:
Node 1:0 is 100GB for Datastore to ESX/ESXi
Node 1:1 is 50GB for snapshot

Section 2: Configure NSS VA networking. (On both sites)
Step 1: Power on NSS VA and start FalconStor Virtual Appliance Setup.
First you need to power on NSS VA via vSphere Client after added Hard Disks.
And login FalconStor NSS VA with username root, password IPStor101.
FalconStor Virtual Appliance Setup window will popup once logged in. or you can start with
command line vaconfig.
Step 2: Set new host name.
Select Host Name from main menu of FalconStor Virtual Appliance Setup, and then input new
host name.

Step 3: Set Time Zone.
Select Time Zone from main menu of FalconStor Virtual Appliance Setup,
Suggest system clock do not use UTC, select No in this step.
Select the time zone for your system, and then click OK to finish.

Step 4: Change password for root if you want to.

Select the NIC you want to setup.

Repeat Step 5 to configure for eth1. In this case, eth0 is for management, eth1 is for iSCSI
storage connection.
Step 6: Set Default Gateway.

Step 8: Finish setup.
Select Finish if you do not want to configure NTP Server, otherwise you can go on to configure
NTP Server.
Review summary and select Yes to apply changes.

Section 3: Install FalconStor Management Console.
You do not need to install FalconStor Management Console on both Protected Site and
Recovery Site; you can use one Management Console to manage multiple NSS VA servers.
Step 1: FalconStor Client Install Disk.
In your download package of FalconStor NSS VA, there is a file named FalconStor Client Install
Disc.iso, you can burn it to DVD or uncompress it to a folder.
And then insert the DVD to your system or run Launch.exe directly to start installation wizard,
click on Management button.
Click on Server Management Console button.

Step 1: Launch FalconStor Management Console.
After install completed, click on IPStor Console from Windows Start Menu.
Step 2: Add NSS VA hosts to FalconStor Management Console.
Right click Servers and select Add.
Input your NSS VA server name or IP address, and its credential.

New Device Detected window will popup once you added NSS VA, because there are 2 Hard
Disks has not configure yet. These 2 disks are added in Part 3 -> Section 1 -> Step 2 in this

Right click on server name of NSS VA, and then select License to manage your license.

Click Add button on License Information window, and then input your license key to Keycode
field.
Repeat Step 3 to add License for other NSS VA servers.

Section 5: Configure NSS VA storage for SRM and configure replication.
Once NSS VA on both Protected Site and Recovery Site are added to FalconStor Management
Console, you can manage them in a single view.
Step 1: Prepare Disk. (For all NSS VA servers)
When you login to NSS VA via FalconStor Management Console, it will automatic detect hard
disks that has not configured, and show you the wizard.
Or you can expand your NSS VA server in Management Console, right click on Physical
Resources and then select Prepare Disks to launch this wizard.
If you added Virtual Hard Disk after NSS VA powered on, you’d need to Rescan the disks.

Select Reserved for Virtual Device, and then click OK button.
Enter YES to confirm.
One disk reserved, repeat Step 1 to prepare 2nd disk.
Repeat Step 1 to Prepare Disks for other NSS VA servers. In this case is NSSVA-B.

Step 2: Create SAN Resource.
This action is performed on Protected Site (SiteA) only.
After closed Prepare Disk wizard, Create SAN Resource wizard comes up. Or you can start it
manually by right click on SAN Resources under Logical Resources in Management Console,
and then select New to start this wizard.
SAN Resource is the storage that you can provide to client to connect via iSCSI/FC; it is LUNs
for your client.
Select Virtual Device and click on Next button.
Select one disk for create SAN Resource, do not select both of them, other one need to reserve
as snapshot device.

Ignore Thin Provisioning Option here.
Accept default option unless you like to set the LUN size, default size is the whole disk.
Input SAN Resource Name here, SANDisk-SiteA in this case.

Click on Finish button to complete the SAN Resource creation.
FalconStor Management Console will ask you to assign SAN Clients to SAN Resource once SAN
Resource created, please select No to ignore it. We will do it later.

Step 3: Create SAN Clients. (For all NSS VA servers)
SAN Clients defines:
Who can connect to NSS VA storage? (Clients Initiator)
Which protocol will be used for connection? (iSCSI or Fibre Channel)
What resources can be accessed by clients after connected? (SAN Resources as LUN)
Click on Next button on Welcome window and then you will see Select Client Protocols. Will
use iSCSI here.
Select the Target IP you want to use for iSCSI storage connection. This IP is not for NSS VA
management.

Because added iSCSI target for ESX/ESXi servers in Part 2 –> Section 2 –> Step 2, you can see
the ESX/ESXi server’s Initiator here. Otherwise you need to go back Part 2 –> Section 2 –> Step
2 to add iSCSI target for ESX/ESXi servers.
Enter Client Name, select Linux as Client Type, and click Find button to get Client IP address.

Deselect Enable Persistent Reservation here.
SAN Client added for one of NSS VA server.
Repeat Step 3 to add SAN Client for other NSS VA servers. In this case is NSSVA-B.

Step 4: Assign SAN Resource to SAN Client. (Protected Site only)
Right click on the SAN Client you just created in Step 3, and then select Assign.
Click on Next button on Welcome window and then you will see Select virtual drives for LUNs
in the target.
Assign LUN ID here.

Step 5: Enable TimeMark for SAN Resource.
You must enable TimeMark for SAN Resource before enable replication.
FalconStor Management Console prompts you to create snapshot resource, click on OK
button to accept it.
Click on Next button on Welcome window and then you will see Select Physical Resource for
the Virtual Device. Disks has not configure as SAN Resource will show at here.

Accept the default snapshot resource size, or you can use whole disk.
Click Next button on Verify the Selected Physical Devices window, and accept the default
Storage Policy, click Next button to continue.
Select Always maintain write operations.

You can deselect Enable Snapshot Notification option here.
Click Finish button to complete snapshot device creation.
After Snapshot device created, Enable TimeMark/CDP Wizard comes up.

Do not select Enable Continuous Data Protection (CDP) here.
Enter Date/Time for Create an initial TimeMark on, please note that the time must not earlier
than the time your current Time. Suggest it is half an hour delay due to your current Time.
TimeMark is enabled now.

Step 6: Enable Replication.
Before install and configure SRM, you’d need to enable replication for SAN Resource at SiteA.
Select remote NSS VA server at Recovery Site (SiteB), in this case is NSSVA-B.

The remote NSS VA server’s management IP address.
Deselect Continuous Mode; instead it will use Delta Mode for replication.
Enter Start replication schedule time; suggest half an hour delay due to current time.

Select Enable Throughput Control if you want, deselect it will get better performance if you
have separated network for replication; also select transmit protocol at next step.
Suggest do not change other transmission option.

Here is list of available LUNs on remote NSS VA server; select one for replication destination,
LUN size must same or larger than source LUN.

To check your replication status here, and wait replication till it is completed. And then go on
to next step.

Step 7: Enable TimeMark for replicated LUN.
After replication completed, you’d need to enable TimeMark for replicated LUN.
Click on Next button on Welcome window and then you will see Continuous Data Protection
window, click Next to continue here.

Step 1: Connect to iSCSI LUN and format as VMFS Datastore.
Rescan iSCSI Software Adapter to show available LUNs.
