Recognition System that advances precision in
auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance
in diverse shooting situations. Live View mode
allows shooting while confirming the subject on
the large 3-in., approx. 920k-dot high-density

NIKON D90 FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS
Newly designed Nikon DX-format CMOS
image sensor with wide ISO sensitivity range
with low noise D90’s
12.3 effective megapixels provides outstanding
resolution, delivering images with extraordinarily
defined detail and expanded enlargement capacity.
The extremely wide sensitivity range of ISO 200
to 3200 delivers incredibly low-noise
characteristics throughout. Furthermore, sensitivity
can be increased to Hi 1 (ISO 6400 equivalent)

and decreased to Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent) to
expand shooting versatility. The camera also
employs the Image Sensor Cleaning function that
works to free image-degrading dust particles from
the sensor’s optical low-pass filter.
EXPEED for smooth tones, rich colors and
fine details
N i k o n ’ s
comprehensive
digital imageprocessing EXPEED
technology is
optimized for the
D90 to realize the
high-quality, high-speed image processing
capability. EXPEED also contributes to the
outstanding performance of other powerful
features such as Live View and the new Face
Detection System.
D-Movie: the world’s first* D-SLR movie mode
In a world first* for D-SLRs, the D90 offers a
movie function, allowing you to shoot 320 x 216
pixels, 640 x 424 pixels or HD720p (1,280 x 720
pixels) movies at the professional smoothness of
24 frames per second in motion JPEG format.
The D90’s sensor, which is much larger than the
sensor of a typical camcorder, ensures higher
image quality and exceptional low-noise, high
ISO sensitivity performance, even during movie
shooting. Capturing creative movie clips or the
drama of life’s moving moments is further
enhanced by the wide selection of incredibly
sharp NIKKOR interchangeable lenses that are
available, from fisheye to wide-angle to supertelephoto. And Micro NIKKOR lenses bring the
magic of extreme close-up imagery to movie
making.
*As of August 27, 2008, according to research conducted by
Nikon Corporation
Note: Autofocus and some other functions are not available
when recording movies.
Scene Recognition System integrated with
Face Detection System
The D90 precisely reads the color and brightness
information of each scene from the 420-pixel
RGB sensor, and applies this to auto focus, auto
exposure and auto white balance. The D90 also
recognizes human faces using the new Face
Detection System, data which is incorporated
during calculation, resulting in faces with
newfound definition and accuracy as well as
enabling face priority AF in Live View mode and
immediate zoom into people’s faces in playback
zoom.
Wide area AF offers a large AF area suitable for
handheld shooting, and Normal area AF provides
focus with pinpoint accuracy when using a tripod.
Easy-to-use Live View
mode
One press of the Live
View button activates
the D90’s Live View
mode, delivering a
bright, crisp image to
the 3-in., approx. 920kdot color LCD and allowing comfortable shooting
without looking through the viewfinder.
There are three contrast-detect AF modes that
let you focus on any point in the frame:
Face priority AF automatically detects up to five
faces and focuses on that calculated to be the
closest.
And when Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses
are in use, photographers will enjoy the benefit
of a VR-smoothed image, even in Live View mode.

mood of images. Six original setting options are
available — Standard, Neutral, Vivid,
Monochrome, Portrait and Landscape — for easy
customization of image preferences.
Active D-Lighting for smooth tone
reproduction in high-contrast lighting
The D90’s Active D-Lighting accurately restores
details in the shadows and highlighted areas,
which are often lost in high-contrast lighting
situations, by localizing tone control while
shooting. There are four levels, including the new
“Extra High.” Active D-Lighting can be used
manually or set to Auto mode. It is also possible
to bracket your pictures, allowing the capture of
one image with Active D-Lighting and one
without.
Versatile, practical 11-point AF system
Thanks to the Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module,
the D90’s 11-point AF system offers fast and
precise autofocus coverage across the frame with
the most sensitive AF sensor operating from the
center. In addition, the D90 features versatile
AF-area modes to handle most shooting situations:

The built-in 16-frame
superimposed grid
display can be activated to assist in the creation
of better-balanced compositions.
Advanced Scene Modes for superior image
quality
The D90 features Advanced Scene Modes: Portrait,
Landscape, Close-up, Sports and Night Portrait.
These modes not only adjust exposure and image
processing, but also judge the optimum Active
D-Lighting and Picture Control settings to obtain
the best results. The D90 also recognizes if VR
(Vibration Reduction) is on or off and minimizes
noise even in dimly lit scenes.
Extensive palette of in-camera Retouch
Menus
The D90’s designers incorporated a wide variety
of image editing functions, making it easy for
users to enhance images within the camera. The
D90 introduces several new retouch options:
Distortion Control adjusts lens aberration,
Straighten corrects inclination of the image, while
Fisheye produces optical effects similar to a fisheye

FEATURED PRODUCT - AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105MM f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to
announce the introduction of the AF-S DX NIKKOR
18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, a new DX-NIKKOR
zoom lens with built-in Silent Wave Motor and
Vibration Reduction. This compact and affordable
5.8x zoom NIKKOR lens offers remarkable
versatility and covers a broad focal range of
18 to 105mm. When mounted on any DX-format
Nikon digital SLR camera, the picture angle is
equivalent to that produced by a 27 to 157.5mm
focal length lens on a 35mm-format film camera
or Nikon FX-format camera.
An ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor (SWM) built
into the lens body ensures fast, quiet and accurate
autofocus operation and complements the
compact design for superb handling. Nikon's VR
(Vibration Reduction) function, specifically
engineered for each NIKKOR lens, gives
photographers the ability to shoot handheld at
shutter speeds up to three stops* slower than
would otherwise be possible, thereby minimizing
image blur caused by camera shake and delivering
dramatically sharper pictures, especially in
low-light conditions such as in interiors and at
twilight. The VR function also stabilizes the
camera’s viewfinder image, making composition
easier and more comfortable.
*As determined in Nikon performance tests
This new high-power zoom lens is the latest
addition to the DX-NIKKOR lens lineup, offering
photographers a convenient single-lens solution
to a broad range of photographic needs, ranging
from wide-angle landscapes and interiors to
portraiture and medium-range sports. Featuring
a newly designed optical system with an ED glass
element along with an advanced aspherical lens
*As determined by Nikon performance tests; shutter speed
that causes image blur varies according to each photographer’s
skill and shooting conditions.
Note:
DX-NIKKOR lenses are engineered and optimized for use on
Nikon DX-format and FX-format digital SLR cameras. When
mounted on an FX-format digital SLR, the camera’s DX-Crop
Mode is automatically engaged, altering the image capture
area accordingly. DX-NIKKOR lenses are not compatible with
35mm [135] or IX240 [APS] format film cameras.

and intuitive operation, this stylish new compact
camera introduces an entirely new touch screen
interface that places all controls at the fingertips.
And it does so in a delightful new way that makes
picture-taking and playback more fun and exciting.

control and a
variety of exciting playback options, all seamlessly
integrated into an innovative touch screen
interface. With a newly developed 3.5-inch LCD
WC-E76
monitor featuring a 16:9 widescreen display, the
only physical button to press is the shutter – and
even that isn’t needed when using handy features
such as the self-timer or new Smile Timer.
The optimized interface offers a choice of three
different HOME screens with large icons that
make fingertip selection of operating modes and
controls easy and accurate. Even the 5x zoom
can be controlled via icons on the touch screen.
Advanced features include the ability to lock
autofocus and exposure on a subject by simply
touching the corresponding location on the
screen. The camera then follows the subject’s

I was then building up my range of DX lenses
and I pondered whether to purchase this lens or
not. I also wondered whether I should invest in
a lens which will give distortion. I borrowed one
from my friend and tried it for a week. I told
myself, “Wow, wow, wow! I must get this lens.”
1
According to Wikipedia, the apparent effect of
the fisheye lens is that of an image being mapped
around a . use this type of distortion as a way
to map an infinitely wide object plane into a finite
image area, hence the 10.5mm fisheye lens can
provide more coverage than a normal super wide
angle 10mm lens. Hence, the word “fisheye” on
the lens make it a whole lot of difference.
Certainly, in very tight areas, the fisheye lens
helps to cover most of the scene, especially in
tight confined areas or small alleys. At the same
time, with a focal length of 10.5mm, one can
easily minimize camera shake since the minimum

FISHEYE
In this eleventh part of a series of
techniques, Steven Yee shall share
with you tips on using the Nikon
10.5mm fisheye lens. A travel
photographer and photography
instructor, Steven Yee conducts
the Nikon D40/D40X, D60,

Even though I possess the 12-24mm DX lenses,
the 10.5mm fisheye is a good complement as it
has a wider coverage than the 12mm. Oh yes,
just to clear the myth of focal length, there is a
difference between 10.5mm fisheye and a
superwide angle 10mm lens. Difference being,
for a normal super wide angle 10mm lens, it has
less angle coverage than the 10.5mm fisheye
lens. We also do not experience the barrel
distortion as seen in the 10.5mm fisheye lens.
“Lens distortion…
desirable or unwanted?
I love it though!”
]
When I first started photography with film in the
good old days, I did hear of this lens call the
16mm fisheye. In those days, this is a very
expensive lens which I can barely afford as a
student. I gave it a miss. Now into the digital era,
I continue to use the Nikon system and this lens
came into my sight again in the form of a more
affordable 10.5mm.
shutter speed to minimize camera shake is 1/10
of a second in this case. (The minimum shutter
speed to minimize camera shake is 1/focal length.)
This will mean that shooting with this lens in low
light conditions or even night photography
without a tripod is not impossible with the help
of a higher ISO.
Some tips:
• It is important to note the degree of distortion
when you tilt the camera upwards and
downwards.
• Usually, the central area of the frame has less
distortion, hence try to avoid placing your main
subjects outside the central area of the
viewfinder.
• This lens does not allow the use of a UV or
skylight filter to protect the lens, hence special
care is needed to avoid grease or thumb prints
on the lens. Do standby a lens pen or lens
tissue. But the wonderful angle which this lens
provides is worth the effort.
The fisheye lens is versatile. Used adequately, it
can even be used for shooting architecture,
landscape, portrait and daily scenes. With the
tips above in mind as well as the case studies
below, enjoy yourself in playing with the
distortion.

Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shall share with you on appreciating
perspective and applying it in photography. This is one of the techniques
which photographers use to emphasise distance and depth. Look out for it.

The 18mm focal length is often available in most of Nikon kit lenses. OTHER FOCAL LENGTHS
When the 12mm lens is used, it shows more coverage than the 18mm
focal length. The 10.5mm fisheye reveals more of the surrounding
amidst the lens barrel distortion, which can sometime make the picture
look different from an ordinary undistorted shot.
Do take note of the distortion
when you tilt the camera
upwards and downwards. At
eye level, barrel distortion is
seen in region off the centre of
the image. When the camera is
tilted upwards or downwards,
the horizon became distorted.
If used creatively, this sort of
distortion can sometimes lead
to some stunning shots.

Good use of the fisheye lens can also yield good effect
for architectural shots. The old stairways and the roof
looked appealing. While I enjoy the process of
controlling the distortion, I also have to take note of
maintaining the symmetry.

fast. The strokes were fierce and movement
unpredictable. I was actually about 3 metres away from

The extremely wide coverage exhibited
by the fisheye lens allows me to shoot
this picture while standing about 1
metre from the fountain in the front,
and yet able to cover so many
fountains in the background. I have to
be careful not to shoot my shoes as I
tiled the camera downwards. If I were
to use the 18mm lens, I would have
to shift myself much further away from
the fountain in front to get this
coverage.

made the curves more exaggerated.

I hardly see such a scene, bank security guards on horseback. Taken in Turpan, Xinjiang, China, the fisheye lens
provided a wide coverage of the scene and the distorted faces of the horses look amusing.

In the early days he shot everything. After winning
the Kodak Singapore Photo Competition in 1985,
he goes on to represent Singapore in the Hong
Kong Dragon Boat photo competition and
triumphantly won the overall grand prize. In 1986
he took plunge and became a freelance
photographer. He is later appointed the official
photographer for Miss Universe Pageant 1987.
And in both year 1987 & 1988, he received
acclamations from Singapore Tourism Board for
Best Photo in the Tourism Awards. His big break
in architectural photography came in 1988 when
he was invited by Lena Lim of Select Publishing
to illustrate the book Innovative Architecture of
Singapore.
In addition to his work with Singapore and
Malaysian based architects such as Mok Wei Wei,
Chan Soo Khian, Tang Guan Bee, Kerry Hill,
WOHA, Ernesto Bedmar, Wooi Lok Kuang, Tay
Kheng Soon, Lim Teng Ngiom, Tan Kok Hiang
and William Lim Siew Wai he has been
commissioned by several international architects
including Philip Johnson, Ken Yeang, Richard
Meier, Kenzo Tange, IM Pei, Gwathamy Seigal
and Moshe Safdie and has worked in China,
Indonesia (Bali), India, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia,
Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.
His portfolio includes resorts, hotels, airports,
MRT stations, schools, condominiums and houses.
These early experiences have all influenced the
way he looks at architecture. He identifies the
underlying structure and unlike some other
photographers who take half a day to set up and
light a single picture, using natural light, he
uncannily identifies the angles and captures the
immediacy of an object and the transmuting
effect of light on space. His most recent work
also makes sensuous connections with landscape
and topography. His studio work is carried out
in a renovated shop house in Koon Seng Road,
designed by Richard Ho Architects, which won
an SIA Award in 1996.
