This manual explains the steps for unpacking, mounting and basic installation before using the MUTOH

Full-color inkjet printer VJ-1608 Hybrid.

This manual is intended for owners, installers, and users of this product.

1 Unpacking boxes

Procedures for unpacking boxes are explained.

This product is packaged separately, divided into the printer, stand, media-feed table L and media-feed table R.

CAUTION

Make sure to unpack this product with four persons or more.

While taking out the printer from the box, make sure to remove the vinyl sheet and hold the handles on the printer side.

If the printer is lifted with the vinyl sheet attached, there is a possibility that the printer might slip from your hands and be damaged.

2 Confirming bundled items

After unpacking, please confirm that the product has not damaged and no components are missing.

NOTE

If any items are damaged or missing, contact

MUTOH local dealer.

Unpack the printer box in accordance with the following steps.

1. Carry the box to where you will unpack it.

2. Remove the bands.

3. Open the box and take out the following components.

1.2 Unpacking the stand box and   media-feed table boxes

Unpack the stand box and media-feed box in accordance with the following steps.

1. Carry the box to where you will unpack it.

2. Open the box and take out the components.

3 Assembling

This section explains how to assemble the printer.

CAUTION

Four or more people are required to assemble this printer.

4. Fasten the connector bar to the left stand in the same way as in Step 3.

3.1 Assembling the stand

Follow the procedure below to assemble the stand.

1. Follow the procedure below to assemble the right stand.

a. Attach the right leg part to the right base part so that four screw holes in the base part are at the front.

b. Tighten two hexagon socket head cap screws using a hexagonal wrench.

2. Assemble the left stand in the same way as in Step 1.

6. Shake the stand to make sure that each part is firmly attached.

3.2 Attaching the stand

Follow the procedure below to attach the stand to the printer.

1. Turn the four adjusters as shown below to prevent the stand from moving.

3. Remove the two transfer stays and fasten the printer to the stand using eight butterfly screws.

4. Follow the procedure below to attach the waste fluid tank.

a. Place the waste fluid tank in the waste fluid tank holder.

b. Attach the waste fluid tube to the tank.

c. Insert the waste fluid sensor cable into the connector on the bottom of the printer.

3.3 Attaching the solenoid valve unit

Follow the procedure below to attach the solenoid valve unit on the printer.

1. Ataching the solenoid valve unit to the connection bar with the four solenoid valve unit fastening screws.

3. Fasten the connector bar to the right stand using two hexagon socket head cap screws.

Attach the connector bar with the tapped holes for solenoid valve unit fastening screws facing the rear as shown below.

3. Looking at the rear of the printer, attach the short air tube to the left side of the solenoid valve unit and the long air tube to the right side of the solenoid valve unit.

3.4 Detaching fastening materials

This printer has fastening materials in the place shown below.

Detach all protective materials in accordance with the following steps.

1. Remove all tapes from each cover.

2. Open the front cover, then remove a screw from the head unit fastening material (metal plate) and remove the material.

4 Installation

Procedures and environment for installing this product are explained.

4.1 Installation environment

Install this product to the appropriate place with reference to the following.

WARNING

Do not install the printer in the following places where there is a possibility that the printer may be damaged or might fall or be fallen by chance.

On a shaky stand

Slanting location

Places where vibration of other machines etc. is transmitted.

Do not stamp on the printer or do not place heavy things on top of it. The printer may be damaged or might fall or be fallen by chance.

Cover the printer with blanket and cloth like tablecloth and do not close the vent.

If the vent is closed, the printer could accumulate heat inside and may cause fire.

Do not install the printer in a location that has high humidity or is dusty.

It could lead to electric shock and fire.

For temperature and humidity, avoid locations such as the following. There is a possibility that the print quality will be affected.

Places that receive direct sunlight, increased illumination or direct air, for example from an air conditioner.

To keep the temperature and humidity constant, install this product in a location where the air condition is adjustable.

4.1.2 Installation space

Install on a level floor which meets the following condition.

It has enough strength to support the weight of the printer and the stand.

NOTE

For the weight of the printer and the stand, refer to the Operation Manual.

(1) When using the media-feed table

3. Set the spirit level on the right and left platens and adjust so that the printer stays flat.

4.2 Installation procedure

Install this product to the installation place in accordance with the list shown below.

4.2.1 Installing the printer main unit

Install this product to the installation place in accordance with the list shown below.

1. Carry the printer to the installation place.

2. Turn the following adjusters in the direction as shown below to prevent the printer from moving.

5 Connecting the power cable

This section explains how to connect the power cable.

WARNING

Make sure that the included power cable is used.

If other power cables are used, it may cause an electric shock or fire.

Do not use a damaged power cable.

It may cause an electric shock or fire.

6 Turning the power ON/OFF

This section explains how to turn ON/OFF the printer.

6.1 Turning the power ON

Follow the procedure below to turn ON the printer.

1. Press the [Power] key on the operation panel to turn ON the printer.

4. Clean the cleaning wiper unit.

5. Clean around the print head.

TIP

Press the [Cancel] key if cleaning the cleaning wiper unit and around the print head is not performed.

6. After cleaning is completed, press the [Enter] key on the operation panel.

Follow the steps below to connect the power cable.

1. Confirm that the printer is turned OFF.

NOTE

If the [Power] key is pressed, the printer is turned

ON.

Press the key again, and turn OFF the power.

2. Connect the power cables (x 2) to the AC inlets (x 2) on the right of the printer.

The Power lamp on the operation panel lights up in green.

The printer starts initial operation.

When the initial operation is complete, the printer enters normal status.

6.2 Turning the power OFF

Follow the procedure below to turn OFF the printer.

1. Verify the following regarding the operational condition of the printer.

Printing or other operations are not in progress.

The operation panel is in normal status.

2. Press the [Power] key on the operation panel to turn OFF the printer.

NOTE

If the operation panel is in the following status, the power is ON.

The [Power] key is pressed in.

The Power lamp lights up in green.

Press the key once again and turn OFF the power.

3. Correctly insert the power cable plug into the power socket.

NOTE

To use the two power cables plugged in the inlets, a total capacity of 18.5 A or over is required.

If the power source cannot supply the required capacity, plug the two power cables in the different power sources respectively.

"CR Mainte.: Start" is displayed on the operation panel.

3. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel.

The cleaning wiper returns to its original position.

The print head returns to its original position.

The printer starts the procedure to turn the power

OFF.

"Power Off" is displayed on the operation panel.

All the lamps on the operation panel and the LCD monitor are turned OFF.

The printer automatically turns the power OFF.

NOTE

If there is a problem during turning OFF operation, a message is displayed on the operation panel and the printer may stop operating.

If operation stops, refer to Operation Manual

"7 Troubleshooting" and deal with the problem.

After turning OFF the printer, wait for 10 seconds or longer to turn it ON again.

7 Installing the ink packs

This section explains how to install ink packs.

Follow the steps below to install ink packs.

1. Turn ON the product.

The product starts initial operation.

After the initial operation is complete, "Start Ink

Charge -> E" is displayed on the operation panel.

2. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel.

6. Insert the ink packs (K, C: 2 each) one-by-one into the ink pack slots (K, C: 2 locations each) on the left side of the rear of the printer.

NOTE

The Steps a to c for installing ink pack K (slot K1) is described below.

a. Pull out ink pack slot K1.

7 Following the same procedure as in step 6, insert the ink packs (M, Y: 2 each) into the ink pack slots (M, Y: 2 locations each) on the right side of the rear of the printer.

Ink packs are specified depending on the colors of the ink pack.

Match the mark on each slot with the color of the ink pack.

"During Washing" is displayed on the operation panel and the printer starts discharging the shipment fluid.

After discharging shipment fluid is complete,

"Wash retry? No" is displayed on the operation panel.

NOTE

When cleaning the print head again before ink filling, select "Yes" to press [+] key or [-] key on the operation panel. Then press [Enter] key and clean the print head.

3. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel.

"Insert InkCartridges" is displayed on the operation panel.

4. Remove the ink S/C cards and ink packs (8 each) from the bag.

5. Insert the ink S/C cards (8 count) one-by-one into the S/C card slots (8 locations).

Ink S/C cards are specified depending on the colors of the ink pack.

Match the mark on each slot with the color of the ink pack.

Insert the S/C card all the way to the end of the slot.

"Ink Refill **%" is displayed on the operation panel and ink replenishment starts.

The ink replenishment takes about 12 minutes.

Ink filling operation and pause operation are repeated during the ink replenishment.

When "100%" is displayed, the ink replenishment is complete.

NOTE

Do not perform the following operations during ink filling.

Do not turn the printer OFF.

Do not unplug the power cable.

Do not open the front cover.

Do not raise the media loading lever.

After the ink replenishment is complete, "SubTank

Refill **%" is displayed on the operation panel and Subtank Refill starts.

When "100%" is displayed, the Subtank refill is complete.

After the Subtank refill is complete, "Media End" is displayed on the operation panel.

NOTE

If the Nozzle check printing is performed immediately after the ink replenishment is complete, the following results may occur.

Printed line becomes blurred.

Printing partially.

In such cases, follow the Operation Manual "6.2.3

Head cleaning" and charge a small amount of ink.

Then, check the printing result.

If there is no improvement in the print result even after refilling a small amount of ink, leave the printer for one hour or more, and refill a small amount of ink again.

If there is still no improvement, contact MUTOH local dealer.

8 Checking printing conditions

Check the condition of the print head after the ink replenishment.

1. Turn ON the printer and load the roll media.

Operation Manual "3.4.3 Setting the roll media" through "3.4.4 Loading the roll media"

2. Confirm that the printer functions normally.

3. Press the [<] key on the operation panel for two seconds or more.

6. Head cleaning starts.

NOTE

If one time of head cleaning was not enough to remove blurred or missing parts in the check pattern, perform powerful cleaning.

If those problems above were not improved after a few times of head cleaning, refer to the Operation

Manual "7 Troubleshooting" and perform required procedures.

7. Perform nozzle check again and check the condition of the print head.

Nozzle check printing starts.

4. Check the sample print for blurred or missing parts in the check pattern.

5. If the nozzle check result indicates that there is a problem such as mentioned above in the check pattern, clean the head.

Press and hold the [Cleaning] key on the operation panel for two seconds or more.

"Cleaning **%" is displayed on the operation panel.
