• Place cuff on your left arm at the same level as your heart, about 1-2 centimeters above the elbow joint.

• Position the tube in the middle of your arm, in line with your middle finger.

• The cuff should be snug but comfortable.

• Seated – Place arm, palm-up, on flat surface. Feet flat on floor. Cuff level with heart.

Press START/STOP to turn the monitor on. After the display shows

“00”, blood pressure measurement will begin automatically. To turn off the monitor when measurement is complete, press START again or wait

1 minute for automatic shutoff.

GETTING STARTED

• Setting Date and Time

1. Make sure that the unit is powered off

2. Press and hold the SET button for 5 seconds until the year begins to flash, then release.

3. Press the MEM button repeatedly until the desired year is displayed.

4. Then press the SET button to set the correct month. The month value will begin to flash. Press the MEM button repeatedly until the correct day is displayed.

5. Press the SET button to now set the day. The day value will begin to flash. Repeatedly press the MEM button until the correct day has been selected.

6. Then press the SET button to set the time. The hour value will begin to flash. Press the MEM button repeatedly until the desired hour has been selected. Please note that time can only be set in Military time

(hours 0-24). For example, a time of 1:00 PM would be 13:00.

7. Press the SET button to change the minute value. The minute value will begin to flash. Repeatedly press the MEM button until the desired minute value has been selected.

8. Press the SET button to exit the date and time setting adjustment.

The cuff plugs in on the LEFT side of the machine. The port on the

RIGHT is for use with an A/C adapter (sold separately).

IMPORTANT!

You can stop the inflation or deflation of the cuff at any time by pressing the START button.

TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

1. The right size cuff should not feel too loose or tight. Place cuff on arm with the tubing lined up with your middle finger.

2. Secure the cuff snugly with hook

& loop closures, allowing room for no more than two fingers.

3. Sit quietly for five minutes before testing. Support the back and let feet rest on floor, keeping legs uncrossed.

4. Keep the arm and body still and avoid talking during the measurement process.

5. Keep the arm being tested at heart level and let the other arm relax in a comfortable position.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the force that blood exerts on the arteries. This force is constantly changing as the heart beats. When the heart contracts, blood pressure reaches its highest value. This is called systolic blood pressure. When the heart relaxes between beats, the value of blood pressure is lower.

This is called the diastolic blood pressure. The unit of measure for blood pressure is millimeter of mercury, abbreviated mmHg. For example, an individual’s blood pressure may be measured as 120 mmHg (systolic) and 80 mmHg (diastolic). This would be spoken as “120 over 80” and written as “120/80”.

Remember that blood pressure varies throughout the day. Food intake, smoking, the time of day, stress, level of exercise and many other factors can affect it.

What is High Blood Pressure?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition where an individual’s blood pressure remains high over a long period of time. Consult with your physician with any questions or concerns you may have about hypertension.

Why is it Important to Measure Your Blood Pressure at Home?

Having your blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office may cause you to become nervous, thus artificially raising your reading. Having the ability to take your blood pressure at home makes it easy to record a log of your daily readings. This will help you gain a greater understanding of your blood pressure reading and the factors that affect it. Be sure that you share your information with your physician.

Hints for Accurate Measurement

1. Relax and try to remain still for 5 to 10 minutes before a measurement.

2. Remove any clothing on the upper arm so that the cuff can be placed directly on the skin.

Constriction of the upper arm caused by rolling up a shirt sleeve may cause an inaccurate reading.

Avoid this condition by completely removing the garment.

3. Refrain from eating, smoking and drinking (especially alcoholic beverages) before a measurement.

These activities can affect your blood pressure.

4. Remember that blood pressure varies continuously throughout the day. Try to take your blood pressure at the same time each day.

5. Do not be concerned with the results of one measurement. Many measurements, recorded over an extended period of time, will provide a better indication of your blood pressure.

6. Relax for 5 to 10 minutes before remeasuring your blood pressure.

7. Because many factors can affect your blood pressure, daily fluctuations of 25 to 50 mmHg are common.

Please note: Some individuals with hypertension, diabetes, kidney disorders, arteriosclerosis or poor circulation may see a significant difference in blood pressure readings taken from the wrist as compared to readings from the upper arm. It is recommended that you consult with your physician concerning the use of this monitor.

CORRECT METHOD OF MEASUREMENT

To obtain the most accurate blood pressure measurement, please follow these important directions:

1. Be seated in a chair with back support.

2. Rest your left arm on a table so the cuff is at the same level as your heart.

3. Place both feet on the ground.

Important: The arm cuff must be at the same level as your heart or accurate measurement will not be possible. (Your heart is located slightly below your left armpit.)

PREPERATION BEFORE TAKING A MEASUREMENT

Battery Installation/Replacement

1. Slide the battery cover off in the direction of the arrow.

2. Install or replace the four alkaline “AA” batteries, noting the proper orientation of positive (+) and negative (-) terminals in the battery compartment.

3. Replace the battery cover.

4. If the Low Battery Symbol appears on the display, replace the batteries.

5. Remove the batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period of time.

How to Apply the Arm Cuff

1. Insert the end of the cuff through the D-Ring to make a loop.

(Make sure that the hook and loop closures stays outside when it is done.)

2. Wear the arm cuff with the hose downward. Pull the end of the cuff and secure it snugly with the hook and loop closures

3. Adjust the cuff so that the bottom edge is about 1 inch above the elbow on the inside of the arm. Make sure the colored area on the cuff covers the brachial artery.

4. Plug the air tube connector into the monitor.

TAKING A MEASUREMENT

Please read the previous section on proper placement of the cuff and arm position.

1. After the cuff has been properly placed on the left arm, please press Set button and select [ ] or [ ] on the upper left hand corner of the LCD screen, and then press the Start I Stop button.

2. After the display reads “00” the cuff will automatically inflate to an appropriate pressure.

After inflation, it will slowly deflate to take the measurement. When the heart mark “ ” appears a measurement is in process. The cuff will be quite snug for a short while, this is normal. Try to relax, refrain from talking and remain as still as possible during the measurement.

Note: If the device determined that the initial inflation pressure was insufficient, it will re-inflate to a higher pressure.

3. The device will completely deflate when the measurement is finished. The systolic and diastolic pressure and pulse rate will be displayed.

To end a measurement for any reason, just press the Start/Stop button to turn off the unit and release the cuff pressure. If during a measurement the power drops to an insufficient level, the device will end the measurement and display the low battery symbol. Please replace the batteries and repeat the measurement.

If the device cannot detect your pulse, it will end the measurement attempt. Please wait a few minutes, make sure that the cuff is positioned properly and try again. The device will automatically shut off 1 minute after a measurement is finished. You can also press Start | Stop button to shut the device off.

SETTING DATE AND TIME

The device displays time and date on the LCD. They can be set according to the following method:

1. Make sure the machine is powered OFF, then hold the SET button for 5 seconds until digits on the screen

start flashing.

2.

Press the SET button to switch between month, date, hour and minute.

3.

Press the MEM (Memory) button to advance the display selected by one digit at a time.

SETTING TALKING FEATURE

For the MDS4001LAT Talking Model, after the date and time settings are selected, the "SP" character will flash. Press the MEM (Memory) button to move from English, "SP 01", to Spanish, "SP 02", or to off, "SP OF".

MEMORY FUNCTION

Memory Input

When a valid measurement is made, the result (systolic, diastolic, pulse rate, date and time) will be stored in the memory automatically as soon as the device is turned off or when another measurement is initiated. The device can store up to 90 readings for each of 2 users, and also compute the average of the latest 3 readings. When more than 90 readings are stored, the oldest ones will be replaced.

Memory Recall

By pressing Memory button, AVG will be shown in the lower left hand corner. AVG means the average of all recorded readings. Press the Memory button again and 01 will appear in the lower right hand corner, which is your latest reading in the memory. When you press Memory again, 02 will display which is the previous reading. When you press the Memory button repeatedly, the records will be displayed sequentially.

If you want to change the measurement units, power off the device and then press the Start/Stop button for

10 seconds. Next press the "Memory" button and select mmHg or Kpa.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

- Keep the device away from high temperatures, high humidity and direct sunlight.

- Keep sharp objects away from the cuff and tubing.

- Do not press the Start/Stop button without the cuff around your arm to avoid excess pressure build up that may damage the cuff.

- Use the device at a sufficient distance from devices with strong electrical fields, such as television, microwave ovens, X-ray equipment, etc.

- Do not subject the device to strong impact or drop it on the floor.

- Do not disassemble or modify the device or the cuff.

- Remove the batteries when the device is to be stored for extended periods of time.

Note: Removing the batteries will erase all readings in memory.

Use only a soft dry cloth to clean the unit. Do not use solvents or other petroleum-based cleaners.

¿Qué es la presión arterial?

La presión arterial es la fuerza que ejerce la sangre sobre las arterias. Esta fuerza cambia constantemente mientras late el corazón. Cuando el corazón se contrae, la presión arterial alcanza su valor más alto. Esto se denomina presión arterial sistólica. Cuando el corazón se relaja entre los latidos, el valor de la presión arterial es menor.

Esto se denomina presión arterial diastólica. La unidad de medición de la presión arterial es el milímetro de mercurio, que se abrevia mmHg. Por ejemplo, la presión arterial de una persona se puede medir como

120 mmHg (sistólica) y 80 mmHg (diastólica). Se expresa “120 sobre 80” y se escribe “120/80”.

¿Por qué es importante medirse la presión arterial en el hogar?

Cuando se toma la presión arterial en el consultorio del médico puede ponerse nervioso, por lo tanto la lectura podría aumentar artificialmente. Tener la capacidad de tomarse la presión arterial en el hogar le facilita llevar un registro de las lecturas diarias. Esto lo ayudará a comprender mejor la lectura de la presión arterial y los factores que la afectan. Asegúrese de compartir su información con su médico.

Consejos para una medición exacta

1. Relájese e intente permanecer inmóvil durante 5 a 10 minutos antes de una medición.

2. Quite la ropa de la parte superior del brazo de manera que el manguito se pueda colocar directamente

sobre la piel.

La constricción de la parte superior del brazo causada al enrollar la manga de la camisa puede causar una

PREPARACIÓN ANTES DE TOMAR UNA MEDICIÓN

Instalación/sustitución de las pilas

1. Deslice la tapa de las pilas en la dirección de la flecha.

2. Instale o sustituya las cuatro pilas alcalinas “AA”,

observando la orientación adecuada de las terminales

positiva (+) y negativa (-) en el compartimiento de las pilas.

3. Vuelva a colocar la tapa de las pilas.

4. Si aparece el símbolo de batería baja en la pantalla,

sustituya las pilas.

5. Retire las pilas si el dispositivo no se utilizará durante un

período de tiempo prolongado.

Cómo colocar el manguito

1. Inserte el extremo del manguito a través del anillo en forma

de D para hacer un lazo. (Asegúrese de que los cierres de velcro

queden hacia afuera).

2. Coloque el manguito con la manguera hacia abajo. Tire del

extremo del manguito y ajústelo con los cierres de velcro.

3. Modifique la ubicación del manguito de modo que el borde

inferior se encuentre aproximadamente 2,5 cm (1 pulgada) por

encima del codo en la parte interna del brazo. Asegúrese de

que el área coloreada del manguito cubra la arteria braquial.

CÓMO TOMAR UNA MEDICIÓN

Lea la sección anterior sobre la colocación adecuada del manguito y la posición del brazo.

1. Una vez que el manguito se haya colocado correctamente en el brazo izquierdo, pulse el botón Set (Fijar) y seleccione

[ ] o [ ] en la esquina superior izquierda de la pantalla LCD, y luego pulse el botón Start (Iniciar) I Stop (Parar).

2. Después de que la pantalla muestre “00”, el manguito se inflará automáticamente a una presión adecuada.

Después de inflado, se desinflará lentamente para tomar la medición. Cuando aparece la marca de corazón

“ ”, está en proceso una medición. El manguito estará bastante ajustado durante un momento breve, esto

es normal. Intente relajarse, absténgase de hablar y permanezca lo más inmóvil posible durante la medición.

Nota: Si el dispositivo determina que la presión de inflado inicial era insuficiente, se volverá a inflar a una

presión más alta.

Para finalizar una medición por cualquier motivo, basta con pulsar el botón “Start/Stop” para apagar la unidad y liberar la presión del manguito. Si durante una medición la energía disminuye a un nivel insuficiente, el dispositivo finalizará la medición y mostrará el símbolo de batería baja. Sustituya las pilas y repita la medición.

Si el dispositivo no puede detectar el pulso, finalizará el intento de medición. Aguarde unos minutos, asegúrese de que el manguito esté colocado correctamente y vuelva a intentarlo. El dispositivo se apagará automáticamente 1 minuto después de terminada la medición. También puede pulsar el botón “Start | Stop” para apagar el dispositivo.

CONFIGURACIÓN DE FECHA Y HORA

El dispositivo muestra la hora y fecha en la pantalla LCD. Se pueden configurar de acuerdo con el siguiente método:

1. Asegúrese de que el equipo esté apagado, a continuación, mantenga presionado el botón “SET” (Configurar)

durante 5 segundos hasta que los dígitos de la pantalla comiencen a parpadear.

2. Pulse el botón “SET” para alternar entre mes, día, hora y minuto.

3. Presione el botón “MEM” (Memoria) para avanzar la pantalla seleccionada de un dígito por vez.

CONFIGURACIÓN DE MENSAJES DE VOZ

Para el Modelo con mensajes de voz MDS4001LAT, después de que se seleccionan los ajustes de fecha y hora, el carácter “SP” parpadeará. Pulse el botón “MEM” (Memoria) para pasar de inglés, “SP 01”, a español, “SP 02”, o para desactivar, “SP OF”.

FUNCIÓN DE MEMORIA

Entrada de memoria

Cuando se realiza una medición válida, el resultado (presión sistólica, presión diastólica, frecuencia de pulso, fecha y hora) se almacenará en la memoria automáticamente cuando se apague el dispositivo o cuando se inicie otra medición. El dispositivo puede almacenar hasta 90 lecturas para cada uno de los 2 usuarios y calcular el promedio de las últimas 3 lecturas. Cuando se almacenen más de 90 lecturas, se sustituirán las más antiguas.

Recuperación de la memoria

Al pulsar el botón “Memory”, se mostrará “AVG” en la esquina inferior izquierda. “AVG” significa el promedio de todas las lecturas registradas. Presione el botón “Memory” de nuevo y aparecerá “01” en la esquina inferior

derecha, que es su última lectura en la memoria. Al pulsar “Memory” de nuevo, aparecerá “02”, que es la lectura anterior. Al pulsar el botón “Memory” en varias ocasiones, los registros se visualizarán secuencialmente.

4. Absténgase de mover la mano y el cuerpo durante la medición.

Su presión arterial puede fluctuar considerablemente a lo largo del día; todos los siguientes factores pueden influir en la presión arterial: estado emocional, actividades/ejercicio diarios, tabaquismo, consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, alimentación, ingesta de determinados medicamentos.

MODO DE CALIBRACIÓN DEL SENSOR

El dispositivo de presión arterial solo debe ser calibrado por el fabricante.

Si desea cambiar las unidades de medición, apague el dispositivo y luego pulse el botón “Start/Stop” durante

10 segundos. A continuación, pulse el botón “Memory” y seleccione “mmHg” o “Kpa”.

CUIDADO Y MANTENIMIENTO

- Mantenga el dispositivo alejado de temperaturas elevadas, humedad alta y luz solar directa.

- Mantenga los objetos afilados lejos del manguito y del tubo.

- No presione el botón “Start/Stop” si no tiene el manguito puesto alrededor del brazo para evitar el exceso

de acumulación de presión que pueda dañar el manguito.

- Utilice el dispositivo a una distancia suficiente de los dispositivos con campos eléctricos fuertes, como el

televisor, los hornos de microondas, los equipos de rayos X, etc.

- No exponga el dispositivo a un impacto fuerte ni lo deje caer al suelo.

- No desarme ni modifique el dispositivo ni el manguito.

- Retire las pilas cuando el dispositivo se guarde durante períodos de tiempo prolongados.

Nota: Al retirar las pilas se borrarán todas las lecturas de la memoria.

Utilice solo un paño suave y seco para limpiar la unidad. No utilice solventes ni otros productos de limpieza a base de petróleo.

COLOCACIÓN DEL MANGUITO

• Coloque el manguito en su brazo izquierdo al mismo nivel que su corazón, aproximadamente 1 a

2 centímetros por encima de la articulación del codo.

• Coloque el tubo en el centro de su brazo, en línea con su dedo medio.

• El manguito debe quedar ajustado, pero cómodo.

“00”, se iniciará automáticamente la medición de la presión arterial. Para apagar el monitor tras finalizar la medición, pulse START (ARRANQUE) otra vez o espere 1 minuto para que se apague automáticamente.

INTRODUCCIÓN

El manguito se enchufa en el lado IZQUIERDO del aparato. El puerto a la DERECHA se usa con un adaptador de CA (se vende por separado).

CONSEJOS PARA TOMARSE LA PRESIÓN ARTERIAL

1. El manguito de tamaño correcto no debe sentirse demasiado suelto ni apretado. Coloque el manguito en el brazo con el tubo alineado con el dedo medio.

2. Fije firmemente el manguito con los cierres de velcro, dejando espacio para no más de dos dedos.

3. Siéntese tranquilo durante cinco minutos antes de la prueba. Apoye la espalda y pose los pies en el suelo, manteniendo las piernas sin cruzar.

4. Mantenga el brazo y el cuerpo quietos y evite hablar durante el proceso de medición.

5. Mantenga el brazo que someterá al examen a nivel del corazón y deje el otro brazo relajado en una posición cómoda.
