Control Modules • Table of Contents

Introduction

About this Manual

This manual documents four types of control modules:

Infrared Control Modules (IRCMs), Audio Control Modules

(ACMs), Relay Control Modules (RCMs), and basic Control

Modules (CMs). Unless otherwise specified, in this manual

Control Modules are referred to as “modules”, “IRCMs”,

“ACMs”, "RCMs", " CMs", and “control modules” when instructions apply to more than one model

About the Control Modules

Extron Control Modules are hardwired remote control keypads for use with Extron MediaLink Controllers, System 5 IP series switchers, or any Secondary Control Panel (SCP) model. The logic (RS-232, IR, etc.) for these keypads resides in the MLC or

System 5 IP units.

N

Setup and selected command learning must be done via

RS-232 or IP, and learned commands are stored in the

MLC or System 5 IP. For programming and operation, refer to the MediaLink Control Program or the relevant

System 5 IP, SCP, or MediaLink Controllers user’s manuals for details.

Each control module fits into a double space high or four space high opening (depending on the model) in an Extron

Architectural Adapter Plate, interface, or distribution amplifier.

IRCM control modules replicate source device front panel controls (such as on a VCR or DVD player) and uses infrared commands to control those devices. ACM models replicate some MediaLink Switcher front panel controls. RCM models toggle relays within a System 5 IP or MediaLink controller. CM-

19AC remotely controls audio conference systems.

Features

Color options

— The control modules come in black, white, or

RAL9010 for integration into a variety of environments.

System expandability

— Up to four control modules can be daisy-chained together in any combination and connected to an MLC to provide basic A/V source and room control from several locations.

Furniture and wall mountability

— The control modules can be mounted onto or in furniture or walls if they are installed in optional mounting plates (AAP 102, AAP 104) or in the MLC’s accessory faceplates.

Flexibility

— You choose what infrared commands or controls to associate with each button on a control module.

Installation and Operation

C

Installation and service must be performed by authorized personnel only. These products should be used with UL approved electrical boxes.

UL Requirements

•. These units are not to be connected to a centralized DC power source or used beyond their rated voltage range.

• These units must be installed in UL listed junction boxes.

N

The UL approved electrical wall box is not included with the control module; the installer is responsible for obtaining and installing the box.

• These units must be installed in accordance with the National

Electrical Code and with local electrical codes.

Installation Overview

For installation and set up, refer to the relevant diagrams and sections in your MLC, System 5 IP or SCP user's manual:

1

. Attach the control module to an AAP wall plate or an

Extron faceplate.

The same type and quantity of rear panel connectors and

DIP switches shown above can be found on all models of the control modules.

2

. Using the rear panel connectors ( a

), connect control modules together and to the MLC, System 5 IP or SCP unit (see Figure 2-2). Follow the wiring diagrams in the installation section of the user's manual of your MLC,

System 5 IP, or SCP unit.

N

Up to a total of four control module addresses in any combination of models can be daisy-chained together and connected.

N

After connecting the control modules, you must turn the power to the MLC 206 off, then on for the device to recognize the module quantity and types.

N

Extron recommends that you connect the cable’s drain wire to the ground pin at both ends to reduce EMI interference.

The diagrams included here are examples only. Your equipment may have different wiring requirements.

Refer to the specific wiring instructions provided by the manufacturer of the screen or power controller that you are using.

For screen controllers that require momentary closure between the up, down, and common terminals to stop the screen in its current position (e.g Da Lite and Draper), use the included diodes (1N4001 or equivalent) between the up and common

(1 & 3) and down and common (2 & 3) terminals for reverse bias protection.

Setting Up the Buttons

(IRCM, RCM, and CM Modules Only)

Before the control module can control a device such as a VCR or a DVD player, you must connect the module to an MLC or

System 5 IP, and then configure each button. Refer to the MLC,

System 5 IP, or Configuration software user’s manuals.

N

Once the MLC, or System 5 IP and control modules have been set up, pressing a button on the control module causes a command to be sent out, regardless of whether the display/projector’s power is on or off. Also, it is not possible to separately control two or more identical devices out of a single IR port.

Mounting the Control Module into an AAP Wall

Plate or Device Faceplate

The control module and any adapter plates must be attached to a device faceplate or AAP wall plate and cabled before it is installed in a wall or furniture. The installation screws are built into its front panel, so no additional screws are needed.

1.

Before attaching any cables, insert the module’s screws into the holes in the device’s faceplate or AAP wall plate.

Secure the control module to the faceplate/wall plate with the provided captive washers and #4-40 nuts.

2.

Follow the “Installation Overview” section of this chapter.
