IMPORTANT Before using the pressure cooker for the first time, add cooking oil to the gasket, the inner edge of the lid and the top edge of the pot. This procedure should be done only once to make better use of the product. A 3. F 8 TIEMPO DE COCCIÓN SUGERIDO PARA LAS HABICHUELAS Habichuelas Tiempo de cocción Negras De 3 a 5 minutos Coloradas De 4 a 6 minutos Pintas De 5 a 7 minutos Tipo lima De 3 a 5 minutos Guisantes De 3 a 4 minutos Frijoles De 7 a 9 minutos Garbanzos De 10 a 12 minutos COMO RETIRAR LOS ALIMENTOS Abra la tapa 1. Cuando termine de cocinar, apague la hornilla. 2. Use handles or knobs. ❍ Close supervision is necessary when the pressure cooker is used near children. ❍ Do not place the pressure cooker in a heated oven. ❍ Extreme caution must be used when moving a pressure cooker containing hot liquids. ❍ Do not use pressure cooker for other than intended use. ❍ This appliance cooks under pressure. Improper use may result in scalding injury. Make certain unit is properly closed before operating. See page 20. ❍ Do not fill the unit over ²/³ full. When cooking foods that expand during cooking such as rice or dried vegetables, do not fill the unit over ½ full. Over filling may cause a risk of clogging the vent pipe and developing excess pressure. See "Food Preparation Instructions” on page 21. ❍ Be aware that certain foods, such as applesauce, cranberries, pearl barley, oatmeal or other cereals, split peas, noodles, macaroni, rhubarb, or spaghetti can foam, froth, and sputter, and clog the pressure release device (steam vent). These foods should not be cooked in a pressure cooker. ❍ Always check the pressure release devices for clogging before use. ❍ Do not open the pressure cooker until the unit has cooled and all internal pressure has been released. If the handles are difficult to push apart, this indicates that the cooker is still pressurized – do not force it open. Any pressure in the cooker can be hazardous. See page 20. ❍ Do not use this pressure cooker for pressure frying with oil. ❍ When the normal operating pressure is reached, turn the heat down so all the liquid, which creates the steam, does not evaporate. ❍ This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. ❍ Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. This product is for household use only. 16 Product may vary slightly from what is illustrated. GETTING FAMILIAR WITH YOUR UNIT 1. PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE AND EXHAUST PIPE Work together to keep pressure steady. When pressure builds up, regulator valve pushes upward and steam starts escaping from exhaust pipe keeping internal temperature and pressure at a constant level. 2. STAY-COOL HANDLES Lid handle and locking latch work in conjunction with pot handle to open and close your pressure cooker. As pressure builds up the locking pin rises and stays up, keeping the lid locked. Grip handle serves as extra support when handling the unit. 17 3. MANUAL RELEASE VALVE Allows quick release of steam without having to transfer the unit to the sink. 4. SAFETY VALVE (FUSE) Prevents excessive pressure buildup. 5. SEALING RING Seals internal steam under the lid to retain moisture. TIPS TO HELP YOU ENJOY YOUR NEW PRESSURE COOKER This is not your mother’s Pressure Cooker! • Never fill the pressure cooker more than ²/³ full; overfilling may cause the valves to clog. • Always use a kitchen timer; exact timing is very important. • Wash your pressure cooker well in warm soapy water after each use. Make sure the valves area is free of debris and rub the sealing ring with mineral oil after each use. • All foods cooked in the pressure cooker require liquid to build the steam that cooks the food. • Flavors are intensified in the pressure cooker; be careful not to over flavor foods. Fresh herbs are better added just before serving. • Because vegetables cook quickly in the pressure cooker, it is better to add them after the meat has cooked until almost tender. • When cooking any foods that include tomatoes, remove from the pressure cooker as soon as they are fully cooked to avoid the foods having a metallic flavor. • Brown meats in oil or butter to add flavor to the cooking liquids. • Because the pressure cooker intensifies flavors, strong oils such as peanut and extra virgin oil should be used sparingly. • Hand washing is recommended for all parts of the pressure cooker. • Do not store the pressure cooker closed; remove the lid to allow air flow. • The pressure cooker cannot be opened unless all pressure has been released and the red pin is fully down. 18 USEFUL COOKING TERMS 1. Lock the lid in place Using the visual guides, line up the lid and handle and note the locking mechanism will click into place. If the lid is not correctly in place, steam will not build in the pressure cooker. 2. Cook over high heat To bring the pressure up as quickly as possible, set the burner on high. 3. Cook for 10 minutes at high pressure Timing begins once the cooker has reached full pressure. 4. Adjust the heat to maintain pressure When high pressure is reached, turn on the kitchen timer and reduce the heat on the burner to low or medium-low to maintain the pressure. 5. Quickly release pressure There are 2 ways to release pressure quickly: • Using a long pointed instrument, such as a skewer, lift ring on release valve and hold until all pressure is released and hissing noise ends. • Place pressure cooker in sink and run cold water over lid taking care to avoid water running into vent. 6. Allow pressure to drop naturally Remove pressure cooker from heat and allow to stand until all pressure is released (about 10 to 20 minutes). This is a gentler way to remove pressure; remember food will continue to cook several minutes using this method. How to Use GETTING STARTED 1. Wash your pressure cooker as instructed in care and cleaning. 2. Make sure the valves are free of any food to avoid an unsafe condition. 3. Remove the pressure regulator valve and check the exhaust pipe for any obstructions. If you notice any, clean it and replace pressure regulator valve. 4. Check the exhaust pipe to make sure it is clean. To clean it, see CLEANING section on page 23. 5. To sauté vegetables or to brown meats, add oil or butter. 6. Apply a thin coat of cooking oil to the area of the pot rim that comes in contact with the lid rubber gasket. This makes it easier to open and close the lid. 19 ADDING INGREDIENTS Place food and the necessary amount of water or other liquid according to your recipe. Important: • Make sure the quantities of food and water/liquid do not exceed the maximum cooking capacity. • Never use your pressure cooker without water. LOCKING THE LID 1. Grasp the lid handle and place the lid over the pot. 2. Align the arrow on the lid with the arrow on the pot handle (A). A 3. Turn the lid handle clockwise while keeping the pot handle stationary (B). B C 4. Keep turning the lid until both handles come together. You hear the handle latch click, locking the lid securely into place (C). Tip: Before you start cooking, practice positioning the lid and locking it into place a few times until you develop confidence. COOKING 1. Make sure the pressure regulator valve is in place (D). 2. Place the pressure cooker on the stove and set stove temperature to High. As pressure builds up, steam is released through the exhaust pipe. The pressure regulator D valve starts hissing quietly then consistently louder. At this point, lower the stove temperature to a simmer. Caution: Do not try to remove the pressure regulator valve during the cooking 3. Right after you lower the temperature, is when you begin to time your cooking. When cooking beans, follow SUGGESTED COOKING TIME on page 21. Note: An occasional hissing sound ensures the proper pressure is being maintained. 20 RELEASING STEAM Your pressure cooker offers three ways to release steam. • Rapid release Carefully carry the pressure cooker to the sink and place under the water tap, making sure that the water falls onto the sides of the lid and not onto the pressure regulator valve (E). E • Manual release valve Allows steam to escape without transferring the unit to the sink. 1. Lift the manual release valve by inserting a pointed metal instrument through the ring, such as a metal skewer (F). Caution: Be careful as the unit is very hot. Wait until the pot has cooled down. 2. Lift the ring until all the steam is completely released. F The lid will easily open. Important: The steam must be completely released; otherwise, you cannot unlock the lid. • Slow release Remove the cooker off the burner and allow it to stand until the cooker cools, releasing all the pressure. Tip: Before removing the lid, check that red locking pin is fully down. SUGGESTED COOKING TIME FOR BEANS BEAN COOKING TIME Navy 3 to 5 minutes Red 4 to 6 minutes Pinto 5 to 7 minutes Lima 3 to 5 minutes Black Eyed Peas 3 to 4 minutes Kidney 7 to 9 minutes Chickpeas 10 to 12 minutes 21 REMOVING FOOD Unlocking the Lid 1. When finished cooking, turn off the heat. 2. Do not remove the pressure regulator valve until you are sure that the pressure is released completely. Refer to RELEASING STEAM section, page 21. 3. Unlock the lid: a. Place your thumb on the thumb rest of the locking latch and push latch forward (G). G b. While holding the latch forward, turn the lid counterclockwise until the arrows on the lid aligns with the arrow on the pot (H). c. Gently, lift the lid to open. H Important: Never use force to open the lid and never open when there is pressure. Tip: If you cannot open the lid, check the locking pin on the handle latch to make sure it is fully down. If not, you must wait until all the steam is released. Care and Cleaning This product contains no user serviceable parts. Refer service to qualified service personnel. CLEANING Important: Make sure the unit has cooled completely before cleaning. Inside Surface 1. Clean the inside of the pot with a small amount of water immediately after removing the food. 2. Rub with a steel pad and detergent to remove spots or food that is stuck. Outside Surface 1. Do not leave the cooker soaking as well as placing it in the dishwasher as it may harm the finish of your cooker. 2. You can clean the bottom of the cooker with a steel pad, water and detergent. Lid • Always remove the sealing ring and the pressure regulator valve. Wash the lid, the sealing ring and pressure regulator valve by hand. 22 To clean the exhaust pipe: 1. Invert the lid and remove the pressure cap by turning it counterclockwise (J). J K 2. Insert a thin metal instrument, such as a cake tester through the hole to clear any clogs (K). Rinse under water. 3. When finished cleaning exhaust pipe, dry area thoroughly, insert pressure caps and turn clockwise until securely in place. Clean the manual release valve and safety valve (fuse) area thoroughly with warm soapy water. Sealing Ring Wash the sealing ring after every use. 1. Remove the sealing ring and wash with sudsy water. 2. Rinse, dry and rub mineral oil all over the ring surface. This extra step will prolong the life of the sealing ring. Note: After a long period of use, the sealing ring might become hard or shrink its diameter size. If this is the case, replace with a new one.
