Introduction

E5

Thanks for choosing Athesi solution. E5 is an Extra Rugged IP68 Mobile Computer equipped with Honeywell high performance 1D/2D Imager (Barcode scanner). Designed for field service workforce, E5 can work under tough environment and heavy duty of usage. No matter it is used outdoor or indoor, the always-on wireless connectivity enables seamless communication to headquarter networks.

E5 is a smartphone based on Android 6.0 operating system. Customization is made to address specific needs of end-users as well as system administrators. For example, E5 has a unique

Athesi feature called Kiosk Mode (User/Admin mode). User mode is an environment for endusers and is configured by administrators. Under user mode, end-users have no rights on changing the system settings and installing/un-installing Apps. This important feature significantly reduces ongoing support cost and minimizesApplication downtime due to incorrect system settings and unauthorized Apps.

Power on/off,Reboot

Press and hold the power button (2 seconds) to turn on the unit. System will vibrate once and display splash screen.

This will load the Android system.

In case of very low battery, system will only vibrate once without displaying splash screen. Try charging the unit for few mins and retry power it on.

Product info and S/N (serial number) is displayed on the splash screen.

Boot up / splash screen

Under Android system, press and hold power button to display power off and reboot options.

This is also one of the handy way to toggle Airplane mode.

User Mode is a Athesi’s unique feature designed to lockdown the system environment and prohibit end-users from changing key settings. For details, please refer to

Chapter 5:Kiosk Mode (User/Admin Mode).

Force Power off

User may “force power off” the unit. Simply press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

However, frequent use of “force power off” may corrupt system/App files. It is used as a last resort to power down the device for a rare case that system is not responding to power button.

It works as if battery was unloaded and the power was suddenly down.

1.5

Wake up and Sleep

User Manual

E5 Mobile Computer

Wake up

Wake up refers to an action that userpresses the power button to wake up the system as well as to turn on the screen. When user has no activity on the screen, system will fire timeout and turn off the screen automatically. However, screen off is NOT necessarily equal to system sleep.

Sleep

Fromthe system point of view of Android, the term “sleep” refers to a maximum power saving state that all Apps and most hardware components are in sleeping status. Most of the time when user is not using the unit, system should be in sleeping mode or else battery power will be drained quickly. Only certain events, e.g. pressing power button, receiving message/call &etc., will wake up the system.

Therefore, when the screen is off, it CANNOT tell if system is running or sleeping. This makes administrator very difficult to troubleshoot battery runtime issue. This is due to a fact that

Android allows Apps to prevent system from sleeping but screening off for maximum aliveness of running processes.

Unique Sleep LED

To address this common problem, Athesi has a unique “Sleep LED” telling if the system is sleeping or not when the screen is off. Simply check and see if there is BLUE LED. If yes, it is sleeping, or else some background Apps are running.

When the screen is just off,it is quite common to take some time to go into sleeping because some system/user Apps may still need have unfinished tasks that prevents sleeping. Thus,

BLUE LED will not be seen immediately.

“Sleep LED” is configurable. For details, please refer to Chapter 2.6 Display and Sleep LED.

1.6

Charging&Battery Safety

Charging

To charge the unit, simply insert the power adaptor’s USB cable to the unit’s microUSB port or place the unit onto the charging cradle.

Battery Low

When battery level is low, it can be classified as “low” or “very low". In case of battery low,

RED LED will be seen to notify user charging is needed. When the level is very low and is close to 1%, system will trigger auto shutdown of the system. This prevents system from corrupting the files in case of sudden power down.

Battery Safety

It is well known that charging is the main source of heat generation. This is especially noticeable when battery is low and it is being charged. Excessive heat will introduce different kind of risks and damage battery as well. Being an industrial grade rugged unit, E5 is specially designed to meet this battery safety challenge:dynamic charging and double monitoring.

P.9

www.athesi.com

Over temperature alert

User Manual

E5 Mobile Computer

Dynamic Charging and Double Monitoring

First, the charging is dynamic based on temperature.

When battery is being charged, temperature is monitoredthroughout the whole process. If there is over temperature, charging will be STOPPED and ON HOLD .

Warning message will be alerted. It takes places unattended even though the unit is still in connection to power adaptor or charging cradle.

Thus, if the user is not aware of the situation timely, system will stop charging on behalf. Charging will NOT be resumed until temperature is dropped to a lower level.

Second, battery has its own temperature monitoring circuity independent of dynamic charging mechanism.

When it reaches the maximum threshold, battery will cut the power itself. It was like unloading the battery and cut the power immediately. This serves as the last resort to protect unit from over temperature.

These design and mechanism is very important to enable a safe use of unit under high temperature that may be caused by different and unpredictable environmental conditions.

Status Bar, Quick Settings & Notification Bar

Status and Notification Bar

Android status bar is the most used user interface. It is where frequently used functions and key notification messages are seen.

When the status bar is pulled down, there is an area called notification bar. This is the placesystem/Apps can post their notification messages that need user’s attention. At the bottom, there is a clear notification button to clearall stacked messages. If user taps on a message, it will open up the associated App to view the details, e.g. tap on an email alert to view the mail content.

To pull down status bar more, Quick settings is seen. The screen is tiles of frequently used functions as shortcut icons. First, there is a setting icon located near the top right of the screen.

Quick settings screen is very intuitive to use. For example, user can adjust screen brightness, toggle usage of Wi-Fi /

Bluetooth / Airplane mode / Screen rotation / flashlight /

Data connection (WWAN: 3G/4G) / Location / Audio profiles, very easily.

All Apps Button

Home screen has an “All Apps” button to access installed Apps.

Shortcut Icons

On left and right side of the “All Apps” button, they are shortcut icons, e.g. Phone/Contact, SMS message, browser and camera. Shortcuts can be re-positioned and deleted.

To move it, simply drag-and-drop to free space on the home screen. Similarly, Apps found on “All Apps” screen can be added to the home screen as shortcut icons.

Multiple pages

Home screen can be extended to multiple pages. When shortcuts are created beyond the right boundary of the screen, new page is added.

Wallpaper / Widgets / Moving Page

Under home screen, when user presses menu button (left side of home button), it opens wallpaper and widgets settings. When there are multiple pages of home screen, user can re-position the page by drag-and-move gesture.

It is important to note that User Mode restricts end-users to see the first home page only. All other pages are hidden.

For details, please refer to Chapter 5: Kiosk Mode

(User/Admin Mode). Thus, administrators should setup icons on the first page only for end-users. All other administrative icons should be setup on the other pages.

External microSD Card

User Manual

E5 Mobile Computer

Location: Notification bar / Settings > USB & Storage

Setup External SD Card

When a microSD card is inserted to the unit, system will prompt user to setup the card. There are two options:

 Use as portable storage

 Use as internal storage

It is highly recommended to select option that uses SD card as a portable storage. The reason is very simple. If there is removal or failure in the SD card, it will cause unpredictable file corruption or App issues if “Use as internal storage” option is selected.

External SD Card permission

Since Android changed the SD card write permission from

Android 4.4/5, user Apps are no longer granted permission writing to the external SD card storage, except to their own private folders. Only system Apps, e.g. File Manager, have full rights to maintain the files on the SD card.

App private owned folder on the SD card

If a user App has the write permission to the external SD card, it is only applicable to its own private folder. For example, Synology DSCloud has private folder like

/sdcard1/Android/data/com.synology.dscloud.

However, such private folder is NOT permanent. When the

App is uninstalled, the folder is deleted altogether.

Administrator should pay extra attention to this behavior.

It implies App’s data has the lifetime as the App itself.

Pay attention on SD card size > 32GB

For microSD card with size larger than common 32GBG, e.g. 64GB and 128GB, users should pay attention to a compatibility issue between Android and Windows.

If larger SD card is inserted to Windows, Windows will prompt user to format the disk in exFAT format, which is a file format not supported by Android.

Therefore, larger SD card should be inserted to Android and format as portable storage first. This will format into

FAT32 standard, which is one supported by Windows. Note that FAT32 has a limit of 4GB filesize.

Display and Sleep LED

User Manual

E5 Mobile Computer

Location: Settings > Display

Sleep (Screen off timeout)

Sleep options refer to the screen off timeout value when there is no user activity on the screen. However, sleep here doesn’t mean “system sleep”. It is just a meaning of turning screen off. To distinguish between system sleep and screen off, please refer to detail explanation in Chapter

1.5 Wake and Sleep.

Sleep Notification LED

By default, blue LED will be seen if screen is off while system is sleeping. If there is no LED while screen is off, it means system is still running because of unfinished background jobs. This sleep LED is very useful in helping administrators to troubleshoot battery runtime issue that may be caused by problematic Apps.

Disable Sleep Mode

By default, “Disable sleep mode” option is off. It means system will naturally goes to sleep for maximum power saving. When this option is enabled, system will keep running even the screen is off.

This is a Athesi’s unique that provides flexibility for administrators when a specific App needs maximum response on network data or processing runtime. Using this option will inevitably increase the power consumption.

Also, BLUE LED (Sleep LED) will NOT be seen when screen is off.

Home key turns screen on

This is standard behavior that both power and home button can be used to wake up the system/screen.

To change such behavior, administrator mayuncheckthe option “Home key turns screen on”.

Static IP Addressing

In corporate network environment, it is very common network devices are assigned with static IP address. This helps troubleshoot network issue by IP addresses. Static

IP setup typically needs parameters:

 Static IP address

 Netmask

 Default gateway

 DNS servers

Save networks

Wi-Fi networks configured by users will be remembered by the system, called “Saved networks”. It is saved in the sense that SSID, password & other IP settings are remembered. When system scans and finds the matched

SSIDs in the “Saved networks”, it will try connect the network using the saved settings.

“Saved networks” can be listed in settings > Wi-Fi, (menu button) Saved networks. Alternatively, scanned SSIDs with status “Saved” are also “Saved networks”. If system decide to connect one of these savednetworks, the one successfully connected will have status changed to

Lockdown Wi-Fi settings

Wi-Fi settings is one of the most important system settings that must be locked and protected by administrator.

Otherwise, end-users may accidentally add public / unauthorized networks, or even delete/modify the existing network parameters. Improper Wi-Fi settings not only causes App connectivity issue, it also introduces security issue that the units may send/receive data via wrong networks.

To address this common issue, Athesi has a unique feature which is able to lockdown the Wi-Fi settings and prevent end-users from modifying it. For details, please refer to

Chapter 5: Kiosk Mode (User/Admin Mode)

User Manual

E5 Mobile Computer

5.1

Introduction

E5mobile computerhas a Athesi’s unique feature called Kiosk Mode (User/Admin Mode). It is in fact two distinct modes of operation, one for administrator and the other for end-users.

Admin mode is designed for administrators who has full rights on the system settings and application installation and un-installation. This is an environment typically used for initial setup and ongoing maintenance.

User mode, as its name implies, is an environment used by end-users and configured by administrators.

The importance of user mode is to lockdown key system settings and avoid changes of system environment by end-users or intruders, whether accidentally or intentionally. User Mode reduces App downtime, significantly slashes the support costs due to different kinds of mistakes, enables a hassle-free deployment experience and increase overall customer satisfaction. In turns, the total cost of ownership (TCO) can be remarkably reduced.

Once user mode is enabled, the mobile computer works pretty like a kiosk than a personal smartphone device. It is because settings are prohibited and applications are restricted.

Purpose / Typical use

** This hardens the system configuration.

** This prohibits installation of unauthorized

Apps. Un-installation is NOT allowed either.

** End-users prohibits direct data copying and modifications.

Administrator defines App shortcuts for endusers on the first page. Other pages are not seen by end-users.

Administrator may hide the status bar and configure the unit like a kiosk. Even though status bar can be shown by different settings, end-users are NOT allowed to pull down the user interface. Thus, settings, quick settings screens are unreachable by end-users

Administrator may deploy an auto-start App and disable home button. Without home button, App is always on top of the screen and will not be escaped by home button.

Administrator may disable back button. In that case, the App user interface has graphical back button to emulate back function. Controlling of back button has similar effect like home button.

It prevents escape of App screen when endusers press back button.

It is common that App allows access to its own settings by menu button. Administrator may disable menu button to avoid end-users from changing the settings.

When USB access is disabled, connection to PC only performs charging but no data transfer.

Administrator should disable USB access to increase security of the unit.

Administrator may disable the camera hardware and makes all camera App fail to use.

Forgot Admin mode PIN

If administrators forgot the admin mode PIN, there is no way to switching back to admin mode if the device is currently running user mode.

It is by design and is the purpose of user mode that only authorized persons are allowed to return the operating environment to admin mode. To recover this situation, the last resort is to perform a clean reset by Recovery mode.

For details, please refer to Chapter 2.11 Clean Reset

(Restore to factory default)

This mechanism help erases all local storage, including important customer data, corporate settings and any other sensitive information, as well as installed Apps, that should be protected by user mode. Thus, if E5 is lost and there is

NO way to break into it except format it, clean resetting it.

8.1

Installing APKs

Security setting: Install apps from unknown sources

Installing App: Google Play vs APKs

Google Play is a software repository that enables single point of software download and auto-update of Apps. Most end-users use Google Play for software installation.

For industrial use, administrator may prefer NOT to use

Google Play but to use offline App installation by APK files because auto-update sometimes may break the software compatibility or user interfaces. Also, Google play needs registration of google account, which is timely and costly, when it comes to administrating a few hundreds of Android devices.

APK File

APK file is an Android App package file format which can be used to distribute Apps offline. It is typical that

Administrator copy the APK files to the Android devices and install locally, without Google Play and Google account registration.

Security: Install App from unknown sources

It users are going to install Apps via offline APK files, it is less secured than installing via Google Play. In that case, user has to allow system to install App from unknown sources at settings > security >unknown sources.

Installer App

Once APK files are transferred to the unit, typically via FTP server wirelessly, administrator can run Installer App to speed up APK installation offline.

When Installer App starts, it scans from phone internal and external storage (i.e. microSD card) and displays a list of offline APK files.

Simply select the desired APK file and press “Install

Selected Apps”, it will install the APK one-by-one.
