The Adaptec® Storage Accelerator (ASA) 7211 iSCSI storage adapter is
a PCI Host Bus Adapter (HBA) that enables servers and storage
systems to be used in iSCSI SANs using an Ethernet interconnect. The
adapter provides efficient, high-performance TCP/IP and iSCSI
protocol offload, with throughput up to 2 Gigabits/sec at full duplex.

This chapter is an important guide to the rest of the documentation
and provides a summary of the hardware and software installation
process. Additional chapters describe how to:

For details to help you monitor your connections, display statistics and
event logs, and add and delete targets, see the iConfig Utility User’s

Your computer must meet the following requirements:

Introduction
Using the Adaptec iSCSI Installation CD
The Adaptec iSCSI installation CD contains the device drivers,
iConfig utility, user documentation, and SNMP extensions for your
Adaptec iSCSI adapter.
You can directly access directories and files on the Adaptec iSCSI
installation CD. These include:
■
Documentation—Contains the Readme text files and PDF files.
See About the Documentation on page 1-6 for details.
■
Drivers—Provided for each supported operating system.
■
iConfig Utility—Provides separate Text User Interface (TUI)
iConfig utilities for each supported operating system.
With iConfig, you can view, change, or upgrade your
configuration. For example, you can monitor your connections,
display MIB statistics and event logs, and add and delete
targets.
See the iConfig Utility User’s Guide for details.

Adaptec SNMP Extension Agents—Provides Windows and
Red Hat Linux SNMP extension agents for simple network
management. For details, see the Readme text file in the folder
or directory for your operating system.

About the Documentation
The Adaptec iSCSI installation CD provides the following
documentation files:

readme.txt—The generic Readme text file in the top-level of the
CD file structure summarizes the contents of the installation
CD. For specific information, refer to the Readme files in the
lower folders (or directories). (The Linux Readme file is inside
the rpm file.) These files contain the latest information about the
Adaptec iSCSI adapter, important technical information about
device compatibility, operating system support, and drivers.
Visit www.adaptec.com for the latest updates.
Visit ask.adaptec.com for the latest troubleshooting tips for the
adapter, driver, or iConfig utility.

Describes how to install your Adaptec iSCSI adapter, install the

Introduction
Overview of the Installation Process
The following steps provide an overview of the process of
installing and configuring the ASA-7211 adapter:
1 Verify that your computer meets the requirements described in
System Requirements on page 1-4.
2 Gain familiarity with the contents of the Adaptec iSCSI
installation CD.
3 Install the Adaptec iSCSI adapter as described in Chapter 2.
4 Install the appropriate driver for your operating system as
described in Chapter 3.
5 Connect a Ethernet cable with the appropriate connector type
(either copper or fibre) and establish network connectivity
between your adapter and your targets.
6 Install the iConfig utility and use it to configure your network,
as described in Chapter 4, Configuring Your iSCSI System.

To install the adapter in a PCI slot in a computer:
1 Turn off the power to the computer and disconnect the power
cord.
2 Before handling the board, discharge any static electricity from
your body by touching a grounded metal object such as the
exposed metal parts on the back of your computer.
3 Remove the cover from the computer case. If necessary, refer to
the instructions in your computer documentation.
4 Locate an unused and unobstructed 64-bit or 32-bit PCI
expansion slot and remove the expansion slot cover. Save the
slot cover screw for use in the next step.

5 Insert the adapter in the PCI expansion slot. Press the board
firmly into the slot until it clicks into place. Replace the slot
cover screw.
Note: Some ASA-7211 adapters are manufactured with
jumpers “hanging,” but not installed, on jumper
connectors J4 and J5. Do not install these jumpers.
6 Close the computer cabinet and reattach the power cord.
Next, install the appropriate software driver for your operating
system. See Chapter 3, Installing the Initiator Mode Driver.

Now that you have installed the adapter in the computer, you are
ready to install the driver. When you are finished installing the
driver, proceed to Chapter 4, Configuring Your iSCSI System.

The following driver installation scenarios are described:

Installing the Driver in Windows 2000
To install the driver:
1 Install your Adaptec iSCSI adapter according to the instructions
in Chapter 2.
2 Start Windows and log in with administrative privileges.
The Windows Found New Hardware Wizard automatically
detects the new hardware.
The adapter is identified as a PCI Memory Controller. Later, it will
be identified as a SCSI and RAID controller in the Device Manager.
3 Click Next.
4 Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)
and then click Next.
5 On the Locate Driver Files window, select CD-ROM drives.
6 Insert the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD and then click Next.
7 On the Driver Files Search Results window, select Next and
follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
8 If the Digital Signature Not Found window displays, click Yes
to continue.
9 On the Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard window,
click Finish.
10 After the driver installation is finished, the Found New
Hardware Wizard window displays a second time, requesting
that you install the Adaptec ASAMGMT Processor Device.
Click Yes.

The driver has been installed. The system does not require
rebooting. To verify the driver installation, open the Device
Manager and view the driver, as shown below.

Updating the Driver in Windows 2000
To update the driver:
1 Open the Windows Device Manager.
2 Expand SCSI & RAID controllers.
3 Right-click the controller identified as an Adaptec Storage
Accelerator 7211 and choose Properties.
4 Select the Driver tab.
5 Click Update Driver and then click Next.
6 Click Display a list... and then click Next.
7 Click Have Disk.
8 Click Browse and browse to the Win2000 driver folder on the
CD.
9 Click Open and then click OK.

10 Choose the appropriate driver (7211C or 7211F) for your
adapter and click Next.
11 Click Next again.
12 If you see the Digital Signature Not Found window, click Yes to
continue.
13 Click Finish. No reboot is required.
The driver has been updated. To verify the driver installation, open
the Device Manager and view the driver, as shown on page 3-3.
Note: If you have multiple adapters in your computer, you
need to update each of them separately (including the
ASAMGMT Processor Device) to show the correct driver
version for each device.

To install the driver:
1 Install your Adaptec iSCSI adapter according to the instructions
in Chapter 2.
2 Start Windows and log in with administrative privileges.
3 Insert the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD.
4 Open the Windows Control Panel.
5 Double-click SCSI Adapters.
6 Click the Drivers tab.
7 Click Add.
8 Click Have Disk.
9 Click Browse and then browse to WinNT40 driver folder on the
installation CD.
10 Click Open.
11 Click OK.
12 Click Adaptec Storage Accelerator 7211 (NT 4.0).
13 Click OK and follow all Windows instructions. Windows will
prompt you to reboot your computer.
Updating the Driver in Windows NT 4.0
To update the driver, you must first remove the driver. To remove
the driver:
1 Open the Windows Control Panel.
2 Double-click SCSI Adapters.
3 Click the Drivers tab.
4 Choose the appropriate driver from the list box.
5 Click the controller identified as an Adaptec Storage Accelerator 7211.

6 Click Remove and follow all Windows instructions. Windows
will prompt you to reboot your computer.
7 After the system reboots, follow the instructions in Installing the
Driver in Windows NT 4.0 to install the latest driver.

Red Hat Linux
This section contains the following procedures for Version 7.2 with
kernel version 2.4.7-10 and Advanced Server (release 2.1AS) with
kernel version 2.4.9-e.3:

For additional Linux functionality, such as dynamically adding and
removing devices, refer to the Linux Readme file located on the CD
inside the RPM file.
Installing the Red Hat Module
To install the asa72xx module:
Note: Linux is case-sensitive; keep this in mind when entering
commands.
1 Login as root.
2 Verify that the correct Linux kernel and kernel source is
installed in the system before installing the module. See
Operating System Requirements on page 1-4.
3 To mount the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD, enter:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
4 To change to the cdrom directory, enter:
cd /mnt/cdrom/Drivers/Linux
5 To unpack the module package, enter:
rpm -Uhv asa72xx.rpm
6 To change to the /usr/src/asa72xx directory, enter:
cd /usr/src/asa72xx
7 To unmount the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD, enter:
umount /mnt/cdrom

8 To run the configure script, enter:
./configure
For Red Hat Linux 7.2, the following command works:
./configure --tree=/usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10
If the kernel source is not under /usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10, run the
configure script with the following option:
./configure --tree=<path to source tree>
9 To copy the module to /lib/modules/<kernel version> and start the
module automatically on reboot, enter:
make install
10 To start the module now, enter:
./S06asa72xx
The module installation is complete. You do not need to reboot the
computer.
Removing the Red Hat Module
To remove the asa72xx module:
1 Verify that no devices are being used by the adapter.
2 Unmount all volumes from the adapter.
3 If the asa72xx module is loaded, use rmmod or modprobe to
unload the module. Enter:
rmmod asa72xx
or enter:
modprobe -r asa72xx
4 To change to the /usr/src/asa72xx directory, enter:
cd /usr/src/asa72xx
5 To run the remove script, enter:
sh asa72xx_remove
6 To remove the RPM, enter:
cd ..
and then enter:
rpm -e asa72xx

7 To remove the asa72xx directory, enter:
rm -rfv asa72xx
The module is now removed from the system.
Enabling Multi-LUN Support in Linux
The default Linux kernel settings allow a maximum of 40 SCSI
devices. However, you must enable multiLUN support to see more
than one LUN, and when you do so, you can increase the
maximum number of devices to 110. To enable multi-LUN support:
1 To change to the linux source directory, enter:
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10
2 To configure the kernel:
a Enter make menuconfig
b Select SCSI Support and press Enter.
c Select Probe all LUNs on each SCSI device. Then, press Y.
(If selected, an asterisk (*) shows.)
d Optional—Select Maximum number of SCSI disks that can
be loaded as modules and increase the number from 40 to
the desired value, up to 110. Then, choose to load SCSI as a
module.
e Press Esc twice to exit menuconfig.
f
Select Yes when asked to save the kernel configuration
3 To make a new kernel, enter:
make dep
make bzImage
cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10/arch/i386/boot/bzImage
/boot/vmlinuz-ml
make modules
make modules_install
depmod -ae
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.7-10custom.img 2.4.7-10custom

4 To modify the boot-loader configuration, use the appropriate
procedure.
Note: When you type the text shown below, replace
<boot_device> with the relevant parameter.
■
If you use Grub as your bootloader, edit /etc/grub.conf and
add the following lines:
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.7-10custom) linux-ml
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinux-ml ro root=<boot_device>
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.7-10custom.img
■
If you use LILO as your bootloader, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add
the following lines:
image=/boot/vmlinux-ml
label=linux-ml
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.7-10custom.img
read-only
root=<boot_device>
5 Exit the editor, saving changes.
6 If you use LILO, enter /sbin/lilo -v
7 Select linux-ml to boot Linux using the newly configured kernel.

Now that you have installed your Adaptec iSCSI adapter and
driver, you need to establish Ethernet connectivity between your
adapter and your targets. Then, run iConfig and use it to configure
your iSCSI system.
iConfig has an easy-to-use Express Setup that prompts you for the
information your system needs to configure it for the first time.
Once your system is setup, you can use iConfig to view, change, or

Running iConfig on Windows
To start using iConfig to configure your system:
1 Insert the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD and copy the Windows
iconfig.exe file to your local hard drive.
2 From your local hard drive, double-click iConfig.exe.
3 At the login prompt, enter the default user ID, admin.
4 At the password prompt, enter the default password, adaptec.
The iConfig Express Setup is displayed.
Note: To change your password, see Changing Your iConfig
Password on page 4-5.
Now that you have started iConfig, proceed to Using Express Setup
to Configure Your iSCSI Adapter on page 4-4.

Running iConfig on Red Hat Linux
1 Login as root.
2 To mount the Adaptec iSCSI installation CD, enter:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
3 To change to the Linux directory on the CD, enter:
cd /mnt/cdrom/”Configuration Utilities”/Linux
4 To copy the utility to your local hard drive, enter:
cp -v iconfig /sbin
5 Enter iconfig
6 At the login prompt, enter the default user ID, admin
7 At the password prompt, enter the default password, adaptec
The iConfig Express Setup instructions are displayed.
Now that you have started iConfig, proceed to Using Express Setup
to Configure Your iSCSI Adapter on page 4-4.

Using Express Setup to Configure Your iSCSI Adapter
Now that you have started iConfig, you are ready to run iConfig
Express Setup to configure your adapter (initiator).
Note: In any menu, press Esc to get back to the previous menu.
When you run iConfig for the first time, you automatically enter
Express Setup, and you are prompted to enter the following
information for the initiator:
■
IP address
■
Subnet mask
■
Gateway address
■
iSCSI initiator name
Now that your initiator is configured, you can choose from these
options:
■
Allow iConfig to discover your targets automatically—iConfig
locates and configures targets and displays target information.
■
Enter target information manually—You are prompted to enter
the following information for each target:
■
Target DNS name or IP address
■
Port number
■
iSCSI target name
After you enter this information, save your settings. The Main
Menu is displayed as shown below.

Changing Your iConfig Password
The default user ID is admin. The default password is adaptec.
To change the default password:
1 From the Main Menu, select User Logout and Login Password.
For details, see the Main Menu illustration on page 4-4.
2 Select User Password Change.
3 To complete the change, follow the iConfig instructions.
