DESCRIPTION
This Red Lion sump pump back-up system is designed as a back-up to
your primary sump pump during temporary power outages, or in case
your primary pump fails due to a blown fuse, defective float switch, debris
clogging the pump, etc.
SAFETY GUIDLINES
Do not use to pump flammable or explosive fluids such as gasoline, fuel oil,
kerosene, etc. Do not use in explosive atmospheres. Pump should only be
used with liquids compatible with pump component materials.
Do not handle pump with wet hands or when standing on a wet or damp
surface, or in water.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, be certain that the DC control unit is
connected to an outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
Do not use the same 115V outlet for the primary pump and DC control unit.
Do not use an extension cord.
In any installations where property damage and/or personal injury might
result from an inoperative or leaking pump due to long term power outages,
discharge line blockage, or any other reason, a backup system(s) and/or
alarm should be used.
The battery required to operate this unit contains acid and proper
precautions must be taken when handling. To prevent accidental shorting
across battery terminals, strap cover securely on battery box. Do not leave
battery uncovered.
Always make sure the control unit is unplugged prior to making connections
or disconnections to the battery. A spark near the battery may cause battery
explosion.
OPERATION
NOTE: The battery required for operation of this kit is not included. This kit
requires a good quality 12 volt battery to gain maximum pumping time during
a power outage. A deep cycle, 12 volt, 105 amp-hour marine battery or larger
is recommended. A battery of this size will provide approximately 7 hours of
operation in an installation with 8’ of head pressure. Maximum battery size
that can fit in the supplied battery case is 8” height X 7-1/2“ width X 12-1/2”
length.
The DC control unit is equipped with a 980 mA amp automatic charger for
maintaining the battery in a ready state, and recharging depends upon the
power drain during the AC power interruption. A completely drained battery
may required up to 150 hours for full recharge.
CHARGING A 12V BATTERY:
After connection to A.C. power and battery, the charger starts its 5-Stage
Charging Process, as described, in the following order:
STAGE ONE: PRE-QUALIFICATION TEST (BatteryTesting)
Yellow L.E.D. Flashes for normally 45 seconds. If Reverse Battery
Connections, wrong battery connected (24v battery etc), or batteries with
shorted cells are found, further testing stops and the Red L.E.D.
will flash - refer to Section 9.
STAGE TWO: BULK-CHARGE CHARGING
Yellow L.E.D. illuminates continuously indicating that the charger is
charging the battery at the full rated amps output. This stage ends
when the battery voltage reaches 14.4Vdc.
STAGE THREE: EQUALIZATION-CHARGE CHARGING
Yellow L.E.D. illuminates continuously and regulates battery voltage
to approximately 14.4Vdc till battery reaches full charge.
STAGE FOUR: FLOAT / MAINTENANCE
Green L.E.D. illuminates continuously. Charging is complete. The
charger maintains the battery at full charge by regulating the battery’s
voltage to approximately 13.2Vdc.
STAGE FIVE: RECYCLED CHARGE
This stage is an extension of Stage 4 and monitors the battery. If a load
(lamp or radio, etc) is applied to thebattery, OR if a minimum of 28 days
elapses, the charger resets itself, automatically, and begins a new charge
cycle, starting from Stage One.
WARNING: The backup pump relies on a sufficiently charged battery to
operate the pump. The charger is designed to charge the battery and
maintain charge level when the backup pump is not in use. If battery
voltage drops below 10 volts, backup pump must be disconnected from
circuit for charger to recharge battery.
During charging or while maintaining battery, periodically
(at least daily) check on your charging system (just as you would with any
electrical appliance). Adverse A.C. Line Power surges, dips, and/or other
conditions, may affect the charger and require your attention.
The battery and battery connections need to be checked every three
months. Handle batteries carefully to avoid contact with acid.
The back-up pump is designed for handling clear water. Do not use it in septic
tanks to pump effluent or in sewage pits to pump sewage.
Do not allow the pump to run dry (without liquid). Heat build up caused by
friction will damage the pump parts when run dry.
This unit is permanently lubricated. Oiling is not required.
Do not install or store the pump where it will be exposed to the weather or
to temperatures below freezing.

INSTALLATION
1. Installation and checking of electrical circuits and hardware should be
performed by a qualified, licensed electrician.
2. It is recommended that the sump be at least 18” in diameter to accommodate primary and back-up pump.
3. The back-up pump installation is shown in Figure 1. This is the preferred method in which the back-up pump discharge is tied to the
primary pump discharge.
4. Fill sump until primary pump starts and mark the “on” level of the primary pump on the discharge pipe. Disconnect the power to the primary
pump. Mark the discharge pipe at 4-3/4“ and 6-3/8” above the “on” level
for the primary pump.
1
5. Cut discharge pipe at 4-3/4“ and 6-3/8” markings to make room for tee
installation. 1-1/2“ x 1-1/2” x 1” slip fit tee is supplied with the unit. Install
tee on the discharge pipe using PVC cleaner and solvent (not included
in kit) on socket joints.
13.The back-up pump operation can be checked by manually lifting the
float switch. Lower the float switch immediately after the pump starts.
This will turn the pump off. Do not run the pump dry for long periods.
This may cause overheating and damage pump seals. When the pump
starts, the alarm will sound. The reset switch will turn the alarm off.
6.Assemble check valve on the back-up pump with the flow direction
arrow pointing away from the pump. Full-Flow wording on check valve
body to be on the top side. Tighten clamps on the pump end.
14. For float testing set audible alarm switch to enable then run water into
the sump until the back-up pump is activated. The alarm will sound. To
disable alarm, set switch to the disable position. Reset alarm switch to
enable position once trial testing has been completed.
7. Install pump/check valve assembly in tee and tighten clamps.
8. Install pump mounting bracket between pump and discharge pipe using
ty-raps (Figure 1).
15. Close battery box and secure cover with the safety closure strap.
16.Restore power to the primary pump. The pump should come on and
lower the water level in the sump back to the normal operating level and
shut off. Both primary and backup systems are now ready to use.
9. FLOAT INSTALLATION: Install float switch assembly on the discharge
pipe using the provided hose clamp. Insert hose clamp through slots
in mounting bracket. See Figure 2. in the enclosed Remote Vertical
Mechanical Switch Instructions. Position hose clamp around discharge
pipe approximately where shown and tighten securely. Figure 1.
SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
10. JUNCTION BOX INSTALLATION: Install junction box on the battery
case using two screws, lock washers, and nuts, provided. Complete
this step prior to installing battery.
ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE POWER SUPPLY AND PRIMARY
PUMP FROM THEIR POWER SOURCE BEFORE HANDLING THE
COMPONENTS OF YOUR BACK-UP PUMP OR PRIMARY PUMP.
FOLLOW ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS PROVIDED BY
THE BATTERY MANUFACTURER.
11.Place control unit 3 to 4 feet above the sump. Locate the battery as
far away from the control unit as the wires will permit. Never place the
control unit directly above the battery. Gases from the battery will corrode and damage control unit.
1. Check system every three months. Operate backup system as described
in the operation section of the manual and make sure that the system is
functioning properly.
12. Lead wire connection of pump, float, charger and battery to the junction
box. Connect pump lead wires as shown to the pump connection with
brown lead to positive (+) and the black lead to negative (-). Connect
black and white lead wires from the float to the float switch connection.
Note: Wire color is not important for this step. Connect charger lead
wires as shown to the charger connection with lead to positive (+) and
black lead to negative (-). Connect battery leads to battery with red lead
to positive (+) and black lead to negative (-) then at the junction box
connect red lead to positive (+) and the black lead to negative (-) Plug
the charger into 115V Outlet.
2. Check battery every three months as follows:
a) Unplug charger unit.
b) Check electrolyte level in battery and refill with distilled water
when necessary per battery manufacturers instructions.
c) Check battery terminals for tightness and corrosion.
Clean and tighten as needed.
d) Plug in charger unit.
