Installation Instruction for Topo Switzerland V1.1

Introduction:

There is a two step installation required in order to be able to transfer the detailed maps of Topo

Switzerland to your GPS device:

1. Install and activate the software on our Windows PC (MapSource requires Windows 2000, XP or

Vista)

2. Request an unlock code for your particular GPS unit and add it to your MapSource installation

The first step makes sure that the software is installed on one computer only. You may transfer the installation to a different computer once and only once (the software includes a single computer license).

The second step makes sure that the maps can be transferred to one particular GPS device only.

Actually, you are entitled to request two unlock codes for two different GPS devices.

For a successful installation, you need:

1. Access to the Internet

2. The 10 digit Unit-ID of your GPS device

To get the Unit-ID, follow these instructions:

1. Turn on your GPS device

2. Press the MENU button twice

3. Navigate to “Setup” and press ENTER

4. Navigate to “System” and press ENTER

5. Press the MENU button

6. Navigate to “Software Version” and press ENTER

7. The unit will show the current software versions and the 10 digit Unit-ID

(do not confuse the Unit-ID with the 8 or 9 digit serial number which you usually find in the battery compartment and on the box of your GPS device)

8. Press ENTER to quit the dialog

The instructions above are given for a GPSMAP60CSx but are very similar for most GARMIN GPS devices.

After installing Topo Schweiz, we strongly recommend that you update your MapSource software to the latest release, see either www.garmin.com

or http://www.tramsoft.ch/gps/garmin_mapsource_en.html#Downloads for details. This will not update any maps, but the functions and features of the MapSource program itself.

You have now successfully installed the Swiss Topo maps on your computer and are ready to use it. If you start the program MapSource, you should see a map similar to the figure shown below

Note the product “Topo Schweiz” in the upper left corner.

IMPORTANT NOTE: E ven if you successfully installed and activated Topo Schweiz on your computer, you cannot yet transfer the maps to your GPS.

Therefore you must proceed with the unlock procedure for your GPS device as outlined below. The unlock code ties the maps to your particular GPS unit in order to prevent transferring the maps to multiple devices. You are entitled to request two unlock codes for two different GPS units per license.

2. Requesting and Entering the Unlock Code

1. Open your web browser and type the following address into the address bar: http://www.garmin.ch/de/registration_topo.php

This will take you to the following website:

Enter your 16 character customer code into the field indicated by the blue rectangle, then select the

product you are going to unlock in the box indicated by the green rectangle. Finally, click on “Check activation ” as indicated by the red rectangle to check the data provided.

2. If the data is correct, the following form will be displayed

- In the first row it will echo your 16 character customer code.

- In the second row, you must provide the 10 digit Unit-ID as explained at the very beginning of this document and as indicated by the top blue rectangle.

- In the third row, you must provide your name as indicated by the blue rectangle in the middle.

- In the fourth row you may provide your email address as indicated by the lower blue rectangle. We strongly recommend to do so because it will enable the system to send you the unlock code by email for future reference.

- You may also fill in the other fields.

When you’re done, click on “Registrierungsdaten eintragen und Unlock-Code anfordern” as indicated by the red rectangle. This will send your data to the registration system and generate a unique unlock code for your GPS unit.

3. The unlock code will be shown on the next page.

The unlock code is shown as indicated by the red rectangle above. Do not close this window.

You may request a second unlock code for another unit as indicated by the blue rectangle above.

However, you don’t have to request the code right now. You can always come back to this website and request a second unlock code later.

If you have provided an email address, you will also receive an email with the unlock code.

4. As the final step, you need to enter the unlock code into your MapSource installation. Start the program

MapSource.

Click on “Utilities” and then click on “Unlock Maps…

5. This will start the MapSource Unlock Wizard

Click on “Next>” as indicated by the red rectangle in the figure above to continue with the unlock process.

6. The Unlock Wizard will provide you with a number of choices.

Make sure “Yes, I have a 25-character unlock code” is selected and click on “Next>” as indicated by the red rectangle in the figure above to continue.

7. Next, the wizard will ask you how to get the unlock code.

Make sure “I have a 25-character Unlock code, I will type it in” is selected and click on “Next>” as indicated by the red rectangle in the figure above to continue.

8. Now you have to enter the unlock code.

The easiest way to enter the unlock code is to mark it with the mouse pointer either in the web browser if you have this window still open or in your email, then press CTRL-C to copy it. Now switch back to

MapSource, click into the field where you have to enter the unlock code as indicated by the blue rectangle in the figure above and press CTRL-V – this will paste the unlock code into that field.

Now click on “Next>” as indicated by the red rectangle in the figure above to continue.

9. This completes the unlock procedure.

Click on “Close” as indicated by the red rectangle in the figure above to close the Unlock Wizard.

Now you are ready to transfer the maps to your GPS device. Good luck !
