Safety at All Times Look For The Safety Alert Symbol Thoroughly read and understand the instructions given in this manual before operation. Refer to the “Safety Label” section, read all instructions noted on them. Do not allow anyone to operate this equipment who has not fully read and comprehended this manual and who has not been properly trained in the safe operation of the equipment. The SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL indicates there is a potential hazard to personal safety involved and extra safety precaution must be taken. When you see this symbol, be alert and carefully read the message that follows it. In addition to design and configuration of equipment, hazard control, and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance, and storage of equipment. ▲ Operator should be familiar with all functions of the unit. ▲ Operate implement from the driver’s seat only. ▲ Make sure all guards and shields are in place and secured before operating implement. ▲ Do not leave tractor or implement unattended with engine running. ▲ Dismounting from a moving tractor could cause serious injury or death. ▲ Do not allow anyone to stand between tractor and implement while backing up to implement. ▲ Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from power-driven parts. ▲ Wear snug fitting clothing to avoid entanglement with moving parts. ▲ Watch out for wires, trees, etc., when raising implement. Make sure all persons are clear of working area. ▲ Turning tractor too tight may cause implement to ride up on wheels. This could result in injury or equipment damage. ▲ Do not carry passengers on implement at any time. ! Be Aware of Signal Words A Signal word designates a degree or level of hazard seriousness. The signal words are: ! DANGER Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is limited to the most extreme situations, typically for machine components that, for functional purposes, cannot be guarded. ! WARNING Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury, and includes hazards that are exposed when guards are removed. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. ! CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. For Your Protection Shutdown and Storage ▲ Thoroughly read and understand the “Safety Label” section, read all instructions noted on them. ▲ Lower machine to ground, put tractor in park, turn off engine, and remove the key. ▲ Detach and store implements in an area where children normally do not play. Secure implement by using blocks and supports. RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 1 Table of Contents Important Safety Information These are common practices that may or may not be applicable to the products described in this manual. Use Safety Lights and Devices Transport Machinery Safely ▲ Slow moving tractors, selfpropelled equipment, and towed implements can create a hazard when driven on public roads. They are difficult to see, especially at night. ▲ Flashing warning lights and turn signals are recommended whenever driving on public roads. ▲ Comply with state and local laws. ▲ Maximum transport speed for implement is 20 mph. DO NOT EXCEED. Never travel at a speed which does not allow adequate control of steering and stopping. Some rough terrain require a slower speed. ▲ Sudden braking can cause a towed load to swerve and upset. Reduce speed if towed load is not equipped with brakes. Practice Safe Maintenance ▲ Allow implement to cool completely. ▲ Do not grease or oil implement while it is in operation. ▲ Inspect all parts. Make sure parts are in good condition & installed properly. ▲ Remove buildup of grease, oil or debris. ▲ Remove all tools and unused parts from implement before operation. ▲ Understand procedure before doing work. Use proper tools and equipment, refer to Operator’s Manual for additional information. ▲ Work in a clean dry area. ▲ Lower the implement to the ground, put tractor in park, turn off engine, and remove key before performing maintenance. 2 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M ▲ Use the following maximum speed - tow load weight ratios as a guideline: 20 mph when weight is less than or equal to the weight of tractor. 10 mph when weight is more than weight of tractor but less than double the weight of tractor. ▲ IMPORTANT: Do not tow a load that is more than double the weight of tractor. Operate Equipment Safely ▲ The operator must not use drugs or alcohol as they can change the alertness or coordination of that person while operating the equipment. The operator should, if he is taking over-the-counter drugs, seek medical advice on whether he can safely operate the equipment. ▲ Keep bystanders away. Start tractor with gearshift in park or neutral and park brakes set. Be aware hydraulics are live upon start-up and can move instantly. ▲ Dig Safe, Call 811. Always contact your local utility companies (electrical, telephone, gas, water, sewer, and others) before digging so that they may mark the location of any under ground services in the area. Be sure to ask how close you can work to the marks they positioned. ▲ Avoid contact with any over head utility lines or electrically charged conductors. 7/25/13 Table of Contents Important Safety Information These are common practices that may or may not be applicable to the products described in this manual. Prepare for Emergencies ▲ Be prepared if a fire starts. ▲ Keep a first aid kit and fire extinguisher handy. ▲ Keep emergency numbers for doctor, ambulance, hospital, and fire department near phone. Wear Protective Equipment Avoid High Pressure Fluids Hazard ▲ Wear protective clothing and equipment appropriate for the job. Avoid loose fitting clothing. ▲ Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing impairment or hearing loss. Wear suitable hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs. ▲ Operating equipment safely requires the full attention of the operator. Avoid wearing radio headphones while operating machinery. ▲ Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury. ▲ Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic lines or performing work on the system. ▲ Make sure all hydraulic fluid connections are tight and all hydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition before applying pressure to the system. ▲ Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for suspected leaks. ▲ Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems. ▲ DO NOT DELAY. If an accident occurs, see a doctor familiar with this type of injury immediately. Any fluid injected into the skin or eyes must be treated within a few hours or gangrene may result. Tire Safety Handle Chemicals Properly 911 Keep Riders Off Machinery ▲ Riders obstruct the operator’s view, they could be struck by foreign objects or thrown from the machine. ▲ Never allow children to operate equipment. 7/25/13 ▲ Tire changing can be dangerous and should be preformed by trained personnel using the correct tools and equipment. ▲ When inflating tires, use a clip-on chuck and extension hose long enough to allow you to stand to one side and NOT in front of or over the tire assembly. Use a safety cage if available. ▲ When removing and installing wheels, use wheel handling equipment adequate for the weight involved. ▲ Protective clothing should be worn. ▲ Handle all chemicals with care. ▲ Follow instructions on container label. ▲ Agricultural chemicals can be dangerous. Improper use can seriously injure persons, animals, plants, soil, and property. ▲ Inhaling smoke from any type of chemical fire is a serious health hazard. ▲ Store or dispose of unused chemicals as specified by the chemical manufacturer. They were designed to help you safely operate your implement. Read and follow their directions. 1. Keep all safety labels clean and legible. 2. Refer to this section for proper label placement. Replace all damaged or missing labels. Order new labels from your nearest Land Pride dealer. To find your nearest dealer, visit our dealer locator at www.landpride.com. 3. Some new equipment installed during repair requires safety labels to be affixed to the replaced component as 4. specified by Land Pride. When ordering new components make sure the correct safety labels are included in the request. Refer to this section for proper label placement. To install new labels: a. Clean the area the label is to be placed. b. Spray soapy water on the surface where the label is to be placed. c. Peel backing from label. Press firmly onto the surface. d. Pride dealer has trained personnel, repair parts, and equipment needed to service the implement. This Rotary Tiller has been designed with care and built by skilled workers using quality materials. Proper assembly, maintenance, and safe operating practices will help you get years of satisfactory use from this machine. Serial Number Application The RTA10 and RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers are designed and built by Land Pride to till the soil for seedbed and planting preparation. They are adapted for 540rpm PTO, three-point hitch Category 1 mounting and are Quick-Hitch adaptable. The RTA10 Series have a 17-25 horsepower tractor requirement, while the RTA15 has a 17-50 horsepower requirement. These Land Pride Rotary Tiller have uses and applications in landscaping, nurseries, gardens, and light commercial use. CAUTION To avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller, securely support tiller on safe supporting stands or blocks! This unit is shipped almost completely assembled. Carefully follow instructions for final assembly. Before attempting assembly check the following items. Having all the needed parts and equipment readily at hand will speed up your assembly task and will make the job as safe as possible. • Check for fasteners and pins that were shipped with • • the tiller. All hardware coming from the factory has been installed in the location where it will be used. If a part or fastener is temporarily removed for assembly reasons, remember where it goes. Keep the parts separated. Have a fork lift or loader along with chains and safety stands that are sized for the job ready for the assembly task. Have a minimum of 2 people at hand during assembly. Tractor Requirements Tractor horsepower should be within the range noted below. Tractors outside the horsepower range must not be used. WARNING Ballast weights may be required to maintain steering control. Refer to your tractor’s operator’s manual to determine proper ballast requirements. Torque Requirements Check to see that all nuts are tightened. Refer to “Torque Values Chart” on page 33 to determine the correct torque value when tightening hardware during assembly. Parking Stand Assembly Refer to Figure 1-1: ! CAUTION To avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller, stabilize unit with parking stand and support blocks! 1. Insert parking stand (#13) into parking stand holder on the end of the tiller frame. 2. Adjust parking stand to a height that will support the tiller level while resting on its skid shoes. 3. Secure parking stand with wire retaining pin (#14). Make sure wire retainer is hooked over the end of the retaining pin. 8 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 7/25/13 Table of Contents Section 1: Assembly & Set-Up Hitch, Driveline Guard & Rear Chain Refer to Figure 1-1 on page 9: 1. Install top 3-Point hitch plates (#6 & #7) to outside of gearbox mounting frame with 5/8" x 1 1/2" bolts (#3), 5/8" lockwashers (#4), and 5/8" nuts (#5). Do not tighten hardware at this time. 2. Install spacer (#9) between upper 3-Point hitch plates (#6 & #7) with 3/4" x 4" long bolt (#8), lock washer (#29), and hex nut (#30). 3. Securely tighten all bolts to the correct torque. 4. Install driveline guard (#10) on backside of 3-Point hitch plates with four 1/4" wing screws (#11). NOTE: Remove driveline guard to make accessing driveline connection at the gearbox easier. 5. Mount left-hand clevis (#15) over square tube as shown. Make certain the longer chamfered edge on the clevis is positioned on the bottom. 6. Locate u-bolt (#16) behind the square tube and insert through clevis (#15) holes as shown. 7. Secure with 1/2"-13 hex nylock nuts (#17). Do not tighten nuts at this time. 8. Insert lower hitch pin (#18) into clevis and secure with linch pin (#19). 9. Repeat step 5 through 8 for the right-hand clevis. 10. Position clevis 26 7/8" apart from inside of clevis plate to inside of clevis plate and center off gearbox input shaft. See “RTA10 Tiller Hitch Offset” or “RTA15 Tiller Hitch Sideshift” on page 18 when offsetting tiller to the right. 11. Tighten 1/2" nuts (#17) to the correct torque. 12. Install manual tube (#20) to hitch plate (#7) with two 1/4"-20 x 1 GR5 hex head cap screws (#21), SAE flat washers (#22), and hex nylock nut (#23). 13. Tighten 1/4" cap screws (#21) to the correct torque. 14. Insert u-bolt (#25) through chain (#24). 15. Install two 3/8" nuts (#26), two lock washers (#27), and two flat washers (#28) onto the u-bolt an equal distance from the end. 16. Insert u-bolt through deflector shield and secure with two 3/8" flat washers (#28), and hex nuts (#26). Tighten nuts to the correct torque. 17. Attach opposite end of chain to slot “A” shown in Figure 3-3 on page 19. 14163 Figure 1-1 7/25/13 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 9 Table of Contents Section 1: Assembly & Set-Up Tractor Hook-Up Refer to Figure 1-2: ! DANGER A Crushing Hazard exists when hooking-up equipment to a tractor. Do not allow anyone to stand between tractor and implement while backing-up to implement. Do not operate hydraulic 3-Point lift controls while someone is directly behind the tractor or near the implement. ! WARNING Lifting unit more than 14" above ground with PTO engaged or engaging PTO with unit higher than 14" above ground can break the driveline and could cause flying projectiles. ! CAUTION To avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller, stabilize unit with parking stand and support blocks! Refer to Figure 1-2: 1. Back tractor up to tiller until lower 3-Point lift arms are aligned with tiller hitch clevises. 2. Secure tractor’s 3-Point lower hitch arms to the lower hitch clevises using 7/8" diameter hitch pins. Secure hitch pins with linch pins. 3. Secure tractor’s top center link to tiller hitch plates using 3/4" diameter hitch pin (supplied by customer). 4. Place a level on the end plate and adjust tractor’s top center link to level tiller from front to back. 5. Place level on the square tube and adjust one of the two tractor’s lower 3-Point arms up or down to level tiller from left to right. IMPORTANT: To keep from bending the parking stand, always store stand upside down in its bracket right after hooking-up tiller to a tractor. 6. Raise tiller up and remove parking stand from its mounting tube. Turn parking stand upside down and reinsert it several inches through the top of the mounting tube. Secure parking stand using one of the upper three holes with existing wire retaining pin. 7. Raise tiller fully up with 3-Point lift. Measure the distance tines are off the ground. If distance exceeds 14", adjust tractor’s 3-Point lift height limiter until tines will not lift higher than 14 inches off the ground. 8. Continue with “Driveline Installation” on page 11. 22191 Tractor Hook-Up Figure 1-2 10 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 7/25/13 Table of Contents Section 1: Assembly & Set-Up Driveline Installation Implement End Refer to Figure 1-3, Figure 1-4 and Figure 1-5: The tiller driveline is coupled to the tractor and implement shafts with either push pin couplers, pull collar couplers or a combination of both, and with either a shear bolt or slip clutch on one end for protection from shock loads. Always engage PTO at low engine rpm to minimize start-up torque. Drivelines with friction slip clutches must go through a “run-in” operation prior to initial use and after long periods of inactivity. See “Driveline Protection” on page 21 for detailed instructions on maintaining the slip clutch. Remove gearbox shaft protector from end of gearbox shaft and slide slip clutch end of driveline over gearbox input shaft. Secure to gearbox with driveline yoke locking device. 4. Slide other end of driveline over tractor PTO shaft. Secure driveline with yoke locking device. 5. Move driveline yokes back and forth to ensure both ends are secured to the shafts. Reattach any yoke that is loose. NOTE: If driveline is too long to fit between tractor and tiller, skip to “Shorten Driveline” on this page. IMPORTANT: Two safety chains are supplied with the driveline. These chains must be attached to the driveline shields and to the rotary tiller and tractor to restrict the shields from rotating. 6. Attach safety chain on the outer driveline shield to the tractor frame to restrict outer shield from rotating. Re-latch safety chain to outer driveline shield. 7. Attach safety chain on the inner driveline shield to the tiller frame to restrict inner shield from rotating. Re-latch safety chain to inner driveline shield. Check Driveline Collapsible Length IMPORTANT: A driveline that is too long can bottom out causing structural damage to tractor and tiller. Always check driveline collapsed length during initial setup, when connecting to a different tractor, and when alternating between using a quick hitch and a standard 3-Point hitch. Make sure driveline is installed properly before checking driveline collapsed length (Refer to “Driveline Installation” on page 11). 2. With driveline level, measure 1" (“B” dimension) back from universal joint shield to end of outer driveline shield as shown in Figure 1-6. a. If measurement is less than 1", shorten driveline. b. Remove driveline and safety chains from tractor and gearbox. 5. Measure from end of inner shield to scribed mark (“X” dimension). Cut off inner shield at the mark. Cut same amount off the inner shaft (“X1” dimension). 6. Measure from end of outer shield to scribed mark (“Y” dimension). Cut off outer shield at the mark. WARNING Lifting unit more than 14" above ground with PTO engaged or engaging PTO with unit higher than 14" above ground can break the driveline and could cause flying projectiles. ! WARNING The driveline must not exceed an angle of 25 degrees up or down while operating. Exceeding this angle with driveline rotating can break the driveline and cause flying projectiles. 3. With PTO off, raise implement fully up and make the following checks below. The action of the tines being forced down into the ground can cause the tractor to roll-over resulting in serious injury or death. Consult your tractor’s manual for acceptable inclines the tractor is capable of traveling across. ! WARNING Always make certain driveline yokes are secured to the tractor PTO shaft and gearbox input shaft before engaging PTO. A loose driveline can slips off the end of a connected shaft while rotating and cause serious bodily injury or death. ! WARNING Do not allow anyone to operate this Rotary Tiller who has not been properly trained in its safe operation or anyone who is under the age of 16. ! Follow all directions on the safety labels. IMPORTANT: Do not alter tiller in a way which will adversely affect its performance or reliability or use the tiller for a purpose for which it was not designed. IMPORTANT: To keep parking stand from becoming bent while tilling soil, always store it upside down in its mount right after hitching tiller to a tractor. Transporting ! CAUTION When traveling on public roads whether at night or during the day, use accessory lights and devices for adequate warning to operators of other vehicles. Comply with all federal, state, and local laws. IMPORTANT: Always disengage PTO before raising tiller to transport position. 1. When raising tiller to transport position, be sure that the driveline does not contact tractor or tiller. Adjust the tractor’s 3-Point hitch lift height so that the tiller tines are not lifted more than 14 inches off the ground to prevent damage to the driveline. 2. Remove wire retaining pin from parking stand and parking stand from support tube. Reinsert parking stand several inches upsidedown into support tube and secure with wire retaining pin using one of the three holes in the parking stand. Make certain wire retainer is caught over end of pin. 3. Be sure to reduce tractor ground speed when turning, and leave enough clearance so the tiller does not contact obstacles such as buildings, trees, or fences. 4. Select a safe ground travel speed when transporting from one area to another. When traveling on roadways, transport in such a way that faster moving vehicles may pass you safely. 5. When traveling over rough or hilly terrain, shift tractor to a lower gear. Do not over speed PTO or machine breakage may result. Some tractors are equipped with multispeed PTO ranges. Be certain your tractor’s PTO is set for the tiller’s rated PTO speed. See Specifications & Capacities for rated PTO speed. 7/25/13 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 15 Table of Contents Section 2: Operating Parking General Operating Notes The following steps should be done when preparing to store the tiller or unhitch it from the tractor. Before beginning to till the following inspection should be performed: IMPORTANT: It is important to adjust the skid shoes down as shown in Figure 2-1 to stabilize the tiller when parked. Always follow “Skid Shoe Adjustment” steps on page 20 when repositioning the skid shoes. Refer to Figure 2-1: 1. Reposition left-hand skid shoe (#3) by: a. Loosening bolt (#1) and removing bolt (#2). b. Pivot skid shoe down and replace bolt (#2) in the top hole as shown. c. Tighten bolts (#1 & #2) to the correct torque. 2. Check that all plugs have been replaced properly in the gearbox and chaincase. 3. Be sure all tiller tines, bolts, and nuts are tight. 4. Be certain all guards, shields, and dirt deflectors are in place and secure. 5. Grease driveline shaft and all other grease fittings. Refer to “Lubrication” on page 25. 6. Clear area to be tilled of rocks, branches, and other foreign objects. 7. Tall grass and weeds should be mowed before tilling. 8. Do not engage PTO at full throttle. Once engaged, increase throttle to 540 PTO speed. Tiller tines will cut better at 540 PTO speed than at reduced throttle. 9. Tilling should not be done in wet conditions as soil will stick to tines. 10. At first begin tilling at a slow forward speed and shift up as ground conditions warrant. 11. Operated tiller with deck level to the ground. 12. Tiller should be operated with the tiller deck level to the ground. 13. Tiller tines will cut better when operating the tractor at full 540 rpm PTO speed than at reduced throttle. 14. After tilling the first 50 feet, stop and check to see that the tiller is adjusted properly. 15. Do not make turns or attempt to back up while tiller is in the ground. See important note below. WARNING Place support blocks under tiller as needed to prevent unit from tipping over onto a child and/or an adult. A tiller that tips over can result in injury or death. IMPORTANT: Turning or backing up with rotary tines in the ground will damage the tiller. 16. Do not engage PTO with machine in the fully raised or lowered position. 17. Periodically check for foreign objects wrapped around the rotor shaft and remove them after disengaging PTO, turning off tractor engine, and removing ignition key. 7. Check tiller for stability by physically applying pressure at the hitch plates to see if it will tip forward or backwards. If the tiller moves in either direction, then block under the tiller as needed to prevent that movement. 8. See “Storage” on page 24 for additional information on long term storage of your tiller. 16 RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 7/25/13 Table of Contents Section 2: Operating General Operating Instructions Before using your Land Pride RTA10 or RTA15 Series Rotary Tiller, you should have completely read the Operator’s Manual, properly attached the tiller to the tractor, cut the driveline to proper length, run-in the clutch, and gone through the Operating Checklist. If you have missed any of these steps, please complete them before proceeding. Now that you have properly prepared yourself and your tiller, it’s time to do some tilling. Carefully drive the tractor to the site where you intend to till. You should have already cleaned this site of any large limbs, rocks, trash, metal, or other debris. Best results will be achieved if you have mounted your tiller offset to the right far enough to cover the tread of your right tractor wheel. Line the tractor up just to the right of center on your tillage plot. You will be working from the center out and always turning to the right to line up for your next pass. Lower the tiller half way to the ground and reduce your tractor engine speed to about one quarter throttle. Engage the PTO and gradually increase the engine speed until you reach full PTO speed of 540 rpm. Lower tiller to the ground and simultaneously commence forward travel of approximately 2 mph. Do not make turns or attempt to back up while tiller is in the ground. See important note below. IMPORTANT: Turning or backing up with rotary tines in the ground will damage the tiller. Travel about 50 ft. and then stop to check your results. When stopping, remember to lift the tiller out of the ground, stop the tractor, reduce engine speed, disengage the PTO, set the park brake, shut off the tractor, and remove the keys. If you are tilling too shallow or too deep, adjust the skid shoes accordingly. If the soil texture is too coarse, lower the leveling door and reduce your ground speed. If the soil texture is too fine, you will need to raise your leveling door and increase your ground speed. For any other problem conditions that may arise, you will want to refer to the Troubleshooting section on page 31. When you are done tilling for the day, make sure you use proper tractor shut down procedures before you get off of the tractor. If you are detaching your tiller, make sure you park it on a dry and level surface leaving it clean and ready for the next use. When you put your tiller up for the season, make sure you refer to the Storage Directions on page 24. With a little practice and a few adjustments, you will soon be achieving the results you want with your Land Pride Rotary Tiller. CAUTION Do exceed offsetting the RTA10 Series tiller 7" left or right of the gearbox input shaft. Exceeding 7" can break the driveline, tractor PTO and tiller gearbox. ! CAUTION After offsetting, check to see that the driveline clears all shields on the tiller, tractor, and tiller hitch. If not, decrease offset until clearance is obtained. Except for RTA1042, the tillers can be shifted a maximum offset of 7" left or right of the gearbox input shaft by moving the hitch clevises (#1) 7" to the right or left. The RTA1042 is built to be offset 26" to the right when the hitch clevis are set an equal distance away from the gearbox input shaft. The unit can be shifted a maximum of 7" to the left by moving the hitch clevis 7" to the right. For best tillage results, adjust tiller offset to the right by moving the hitch clevis to the left far enough to cover the tractor’s right rear wheel tread marks. 1. Loosen hex nuts (#2) until clevises (#1) can be moved on the front tube. 2. Slide lower hitch clevises (#1) an equal amount left or right up to 7" while holding the 26 7/8" distance between clevises. 3. Retighten hex nuts (#2) to the correct torque value. ! CAUTION After sideshifting check to see that the PTO shaft clears all shields on the tiller, tractor, and the tiller hitch. If not, decrease sideshift until clearance is obtained. 1. Loosen the two u-bolts (#2) which hold the top hitch/gearbox frame (#1) to the front tube. 2. Loosen the two bolts (#3) which hold the top hitch/gearbox frame (#1) to the rear of the tiller. 3. Loosen the two u-bolts (#4) which hold the lower hitch clevises (#5) to the front tube. 4. Slide the top hitch/gearbox assembly to the desired location. 5. Re-center the lower hitch clevises with respect to the gearbox. NOTE: For maximum offset, the left lower hitch clevis can be located on the left-hand side of the left end plate. Retighten all bolts and nuts referring to the Torque Values Chart in the “Appendix” section on page 32. Be certain both skid shoes are adjusted the same. 1. Raise tiller off the ground. Place a support under the tiller (not under the skid shoes) and lower the tiller onto the support. Make certain the tiller is secure resting on the support before working on or around the tiller. 2. Always place tractor in park, set tractor brakes, shut tractor engine off, and remove switch key before dismounting the tractor. 3. Loosen pivot bolt (#1) at the shoe’s front. 4. With careful inspection and routine maintenance, you can avoid costly downtime and repair. Tiller drive components are protected from shock loads with either a two plate friction clutch or a shear bolt. Shear bolt protection is discussed on page 23. The parts on your Rotary Tiller have been specially designed and should only be replaced with genuine Land Pride parts. Do not alter the tiller in a way which will adversely affect its performance. Friction clutches should be “run-in” prior to initial operation and after long periods of inactivity to remove any oxidation that may have accumulated on the friction surfaces. Repeat “run-in” instructions at the beginning of each season and when moisture and/or condensation seizes the inner friction plates. Check all bolts and pins after using the unit for several hours and on a regular basis thereafter to ensure they are tight and secured. Replace worn, damaged, or illegible safety labels by obtaining new labels from your Land Pride dealer. ! CAUTION For safety reasons, each maintenance operation must be performed with tractor PTO disengaged, tiller lowered completely to the ground or onto support blocks, tractor engine shut off, and ignition key removed. Tine Replacement Refer to Figure 4-1: Refer to Figure 4-2 below and Figure 4-3 on page 23 to determine which friction clutch your tiller has. Follow run-In, disassembly, and assembly instructions for your specific clutch. Clutches With 4 Adjusting Nuts Clutch Run-In Refer to Figure 4-2 (View - A): 1. Using a pencil or other marker, scribe a line across the exposed edges of the clutch plates and friction disks. 2. Tighten all 4 nuts uniformly until spring load is low enough that the clutch slips freely with PTO engaged. ! WARNING Worn tines may be very sharp! 23696 IMPORTANT: When ordering, be sure to order genuine Land Pride replacement tines only and to order both right and left-hand tines. Always install tines with cutting edge facing direction of rotation. IMPORTANT: Remove and install one tine at a time to ensure they are oriented correctly when installed. 1. Remove the 2 hex head cap screws and fasteners from the tine being replaced and then remove tine. 2. Attach new tine to the mounting flange making certain it is positioned so that the cutting edge crosses over the mounting flange and leads in rotation as shown in Figure 4-1. 3. Replace removed cap screws and nuts. Tighten nuts to the proper torque. 4. Start tractor and engage PTO for 2-3 seconds to permit slippage of clutch surfaces. Disengage PTO, then re-engage a second time for 2-3 seconds. Disengage PTO, shut off tractor, and remove key. Wait for all components to stop before dismounting from tractor. 4. Inspect clutch and ensure that the scribed markings made on the clutch plates have changed position. Slippage has not occurred if any two marks on the friction disk and plate are still aligned. A clutch that has not slipped must be disassembled to separate the friction disk plates. See “Clutch Disassembly & Assembly” on page 22. Refer to Figure 4-2 (View - B): 5. Turn all 4 nuts fully back if no two marks on the friction disk and plate are still aligned. Clutch is ready for use. 6. The clutch should be checked during first hour of tilling and periodically each week. An additional set of scribe marks can be added to check for slippage. RTA10 & RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers 311-252M 21 Table of Contents Section 4: Maintenance & Lubrication Clutch Disassembly & Assembly 2-Plate Assembly If clutch run-in procedure indicates that one or more of the friction disks did not slip, then the clutch must be disassembled to separate the friction disks. IMPORTANT: Before proceeding, secure clutch firmly in a clamping device to prevent injury. Step 1 Place hub and friction disks into the housing. 2-Plate Disassembly Step 1 Remove snap ring. Step 2 Compress Belleville Springs to the pressure plate by tightening the four hex nuts and then placing the assembly into the clutch housing. Step 2 Remove backup ring, lock collar, compression spring, bottom backup ring, and balls. Step 3 Step 3 Bend retaining lugs inward over the Belleville Spring edges to secure the spring before backing the four hex nuts off. Tighten the four hex nuts uniformly until the clutch pack and hub are loose. Step 4 With lugs bent in, loosen the four hex nuts completely to the end of the threaded studs. Step 4 Bend all four retaining lugs out on edge of clutch housing. Step 5 Insert greased balls. Step 5 Remove thrust plate with Belleville Springs and lug rings to access friction disks and hub for inspection or service. Step 6 Install bottom backup ring, compression spring, lock collar, and top backup ring. Step 6 Step 7 Inspect friction disks and hub. Bearing (#9) 21302 Clutch Assembly Figure 4-4 Shearbolt Protection Avoid shear bolt breakage by making sure the tiller is out of the ground before engaging PTO and by engaging PTO slowly at low engine rpm. Increase engine speed to 540 RPM only after tines are rotating. IMPORTANT: Replace shear bolts with original Land Pride equipment from your Land Pride Dealer. See table below for correct shear bolt and nut part numbers. Torque shear bolt nuts to 7-9 ft- lbs. Shear Bolt and Lock Nut Part Numbers IMPORTANT: Check position of lip on stop flange. (UP or DOWN). Replace stop flange with lip UP if one spring (#6) is included and DOWN if two springs (#6) are included. 4. Inspect all components and replace to their original position. This will help ensure that the tiller is ready for field use the next time you hook-up to it. ! DANGER Always disconnect main driveline from tractor PTO and secure tiller in the up position with solid supports before servicing underside of tiller. PTO can be engaged if tractor is started resulting in damage to tiller, bodily injury, or death. 1. Clean off any dirt and grease that may have accumulated on the Rotary Tiller. Scrape off compacted dirt and then wash surfaces thoroughly with a garden hose. 2. Check the tines for wear and replace if necessary. See Tine Replacement earlier in this section. 3. Inspect the tiller for loose, damaged or worn parts and adjust or replace if needed. 4. Lubricate as noted in “Lubrication” on page 25. 5. Drain and refill gearbox and chaincase oil. Be sure to replace all oil plugs. • Drain oil in gearbox by removing the bottom drain plug or right-hand cap. • Drain oil in chaincase by removing the bottom plug and tipping tiller backwards. 6. Replace all damaged or missing decals. 7. Store tiller on a level surface in a clean, dry place. Inside storage will reduce maintenance and make for a longer tiller life. 8. Follow all parking instructions on page 16 when disconnecting tractor from tiller. 9. Repaint parts where paint is worn or scratched to prevent rust. Ask your dealer for Land Pride Aerosol touch-up paint. They are also available in touch-up bottles with brush, quarts, and gallon sizes by adding TU, QT, or GL to the end of the Aerosol part number. This Warranty does not apply to any part or product which in Land Pride’s judgment shall have been misused or damaged by accident or lack of normal maintenance or care, or which has been repaired or altered in a way which adversely affects its performance or reliability, or which has been used for a purpose for which the product is not designed. Misuse also specifically includes failure to properly maintain oil levels, grease points, and driveline shafts. Claims under this Warranty must be made to the dealer which originally sold the product and all warranty adjustments must be made through such dealer. Land Pride reserves the right to make changes in materials or design of the product at any time without notice. This Warranty shall not be interpreted to render Land Pride liable for damages of any kind, direct, consequential, or contingent to property. Furthermore, Land Pride shall not be liable for damages resulting from any cause beyond its reasonable control. This Warranty does not extend to loss of crops, any expense or loss for labor, supplies, rental machinery or for any other reason.
