Only use the appliance in the correct position, with the cutting line near the ground, as shown in the illustrations. Never switch the appliance on in any other position. Switch on the appliance only when hands and feet are away from the cutting line. Avoid body contact with the cutting line while the appliance is running. Do not work on steep slopes. Be sure of your footing. Be aware that freshly cut grass is damp and slippery. Take care when trimming near borders and gravel paths or roads, as stones and soil may be moved by the cutting line. Do not put the appliance down until the cutting line has come to a complete standstill. Use only the appropriate type of Black & Decker cutting line. Never use metal cutting line or fishing line. After extending new cutting line, always return the appliance to its normal operating position before switching on. Take care to keep the mains cable away from the cutting line. Always be aware of the position of the cable. This tool includes the following features: 1. On/off paddle switch 2. Lock-off button 3. Cable restraint 4. Handle 5. Upper telescopic shaft 6. Lower shaft 7. Guard 8. Bump cap 9. Nylon line 10. Adjustment knob 11. Shaft Release button To switch the tool on, push the lock-off button (2) and the on/off paddle (1) simultaneously. When the tool is started, you can release the lock-off button. To switch the tool off, release the on/off paddle. Line Feeding Procedure (Fig. D) • • • • In order to feed a length of cutting line, strike the bump cap (8) on the lawn while the trimmer is running. This will automatically feed a new length of line and trim it to the correct length. A firm but gentle motion should be used to strike the bump cap. The unit should be angled slightly forward to prevent the guard from contacting the ground. This process may be repeated as often as necessary. If until fails to feed, unplug extension cord at trimmer and clean out the bump cap. For best performance, as the line wears, lengthen as indicated in Line Feeding Procedure. Hints for Optimum Use • • • • • • Tilt trimmer at a slight angle from the ground. Lower to grass or weeds you intend to cut. (If they are over 20cm (8") high, start cutting at top.) Slowly swing unit into and out of area being cut, holding the unit off the ground at desired cutting height. IMPORTANT: for the best cutting action against walls, fences and in high grass, move trimmer slowly so grass is cut WITH THE TIP of the high speed nylon line. • Avoid running trimmer with hub in contact with ground. • Trim only when grass and weeds are dry. • The life of your nylon line is dependent upon following the above usage hints, as well as what is being cut, and where the cutting is being done. e.g. line will wear faster when run against a foundation wall as compared to trimming around a tree. Some line breakage will occur from feeding unit too fast, from entanglement with foreign matter, from normal line fatigue, and from attempting to cut thick, stalky weeds in excess of unit's capability. Note: As the weather becomes cooler, the tendency for the nylon line to break becomes greater. Caution: Inspect area to be trimmed for any wire, cord, or string-like matter that could become entangled in the rotating line or spool. Be particularly careful to avoid any wire that might be bent outwardly into the path of the tool, such as barbs at the base of a chain link fence.
